Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game who are keen to get their hands on the new Sun & Moon Ultra Prism expansion will have the chance to take part in pre-release tournaments, it has been revealed.
The pre-release schedule begins tomorrow (26th January) and you can find out where your nearest event is by visiting the official site.
Ultra Prism is the fifth expansion to the Sun & Moon Trading Card Game and the first to be focused on Ultra Sun & Moon, the 3DS update of the original Sun & Moon game. The expansion contains 173 cards - including 10 new Pokémon-GX and 6 new Prism Star cards. The latter are more powerful Basic Pokémon, Supporter cards, and Energy cards that a player can only have one copy of in each deck.

The card game is one aspect of Pokémon I just never got into. I play the games like an addict, and I even dabbled in the anime when I was younger, but the card game just never appealed to me. Does anyone actually even play anymore? I think it’s more of just a collector’s thing now, isn’t it?
OK, I've got to ask: who on earth still wastes money on TCG?
@thesilverbrick If people didn't play, they wouldn't keep making cards.
It actually started last week and many Europe prereleases were cancelled because someone stole the prerelease kits:

@thesilverbrick I played the TCG when I was younger and had/have the TCG Game Boy adaptation on 3DS virtual console, but everyone I know who still buys Pokémon cards collects them. I mostly stopped playing it because nobody else would play with me.
@Kalmaro I see what you're saying, but that's not necessarily true. Just look at amiibo. I love the things, but they mostly sit there and look nice. Although you're probably right, seeing as how the Pokémon World Championships have a TCG part to them.
@MH4 People still buying those amiibo though.
@Kalmaro My point was that most people buy them to collect them, and not to play with them.
If people buy a lot of something, companies will make more for them to buy, even if they don't use it as intended (such as strictly collecting amiibo/Pokémon cards instead of playing with them).
@MH4 and my point was that as long as something is profitable, a company has no real reason to stop doing something. Trading cards still make money regardless of if people use them or whatever, so it's no wonder they are still being made.
Same goes for Amiibo.
@Kalmaro Ah, gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.
Pokemon TCG actually has a bigger competitive scene than the Video Games.
@MH4 No prob!
@thesilverbrick
Nooooo. It's still a big deal. You need a lot of $$$ to stay competitive or even play casually tbh.
I have a complete collection of the HG&SS set and just stick to playing that one.
I play the card game with my daughter. It's not my favorite game, but it's not terrible. We're not serious about it, mostly we just play with theme decks, but we buy boosters from time to time. I might pick up a few of these.
My 6 year old son is now all into it. Great fun!
I always have been a Magic fan in the past.
We are going to one of the pre-release events tomorrow. My son is all excited. ^^
@InterSciFi The TCG is still hugely popular dude. Tens of thousands of regular players around the world at the tournament level alone.
Also does anyone know if the TCG online game has ever added the ability to buy digital packs?
My daughter is in to it a little bit. I was a little too old when the original cards were released so I had to learn the game alongside her. I agree that it is an expensive game to invest in - luckily she only plays at the house so it doesn't matter that she doesn't have a competitive deck. None of the premier events are anywhere near my house. I refuse to Drive an hour to go to any of these events.
@Kalmaro Obviously people still buy the cards. They wouldn’t sell them anymore if that weren’t the case. But that’s not what I asked. I asked if anyone still actively plays the card game. I know a few kids who collect the cards obsessively but most of them have never even attempted to use them in an actual game.
@thesilverbrick My answer to that is still a resounding YES.
The Pokémon TCG is brilliant imo and I'd love to get into it properly, but it costs so much to get enough cards for a decent deck.
@thesilverbrick
I started off playing the card game with my kid a few years ago. Now I also play it with other 30 year old men....
@thesilverbrick A lot of people play the game, both kids and adults. It's a pretty big scene. I'm sure there are more people who just collect the cards, but it's still one of the most played CCGs in the world. You can find people playing it at any board game shop every weekend.
@Dogorilla there are some budget decks out there that aren't too bad. I don't use Tapu Lele GX. I may not have the most competitive deck but I take down some big decks a lot of the time. I don't spend more than $50 on each deck
Rowlet!
I'm currently in the process of building a deck themed around twitch plays pokemon.
