It's no surprise to hear that the Switch is already close to overtaking the lifetime sales of the Wii U, even if it's a statistic that'll always be harsh on the last-gen system. Nintendo's hybrid console is hot stuff right now and that's especially the case in Japan, where the latest Media Create charts show its dominance in this vital shopping season.
Let's start with software, however - Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 has arrived on 3DS and taken the number one spot. In second place is Super Mario Odyssey, which has now passed one million retail sales in the Media Create figures. There are multiple evergreen Switch and 3DS games to be found elsewhere in the top 20, with Bokujou Monogatari: Futari no Mura+ being the only other new release on Nintendo hardware down in 12 place. The results below have lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters 2: Treasure Legend Banbaraya – Sword / Magnmum (Level-5, 12/16/17) – 208,540 (New)
- [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo, 10/27/17) – 133,180 (1,082,650)

- [3DS] Bokujou Monogatari: Futari no Mura+ (Marvelous, 12/14/17) – 15,612 (New)

- [NSW] Sumikko Gurashi: Sumikko Park he Youkoso (Nippon Columbia, 12/07/17) – 10,072 (92,586)
Hardware sales were up mostly across the board, with only the PS4 Pro dropping following a spike from a previous Monster Hunter: Worlds system. The headline is the Switch, however, which sold a whopping 221,210 units last week, a hefty increase on figures that were already impressive. The New 2DS LL and New 3DS LL (XL) are back up to third and fourth place overall, too. That Switch number, we should add, surpasses the sales of all other systems combined.
- Switch – 221,210 (164,908)
- PlayStation 4 – 45,161 (40,524)
- New 2DS LL – 31,653 (27,074)
- New 3DS LL – 19,115 (15,059)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 17,804 (45,163)
- PlayStation Vita – 9,049 (8,483)
- 2DS – 4,324 (3,192)
- Xbox One – 2,175 (406)
- New 3DS – 421 (248)
- Xbox One X – 132 (75)
- Wii U – 75 (70)
- PlayStation 3 – 44 (48)
Another fantastic week for Nintendo's new system in Japan and a sign that momentum is picking up as the year ends. Nintendo will undoubtedly be heading into 2018 with a lot of confidence.

Holy schnikes! Switch is on fire!
I almost pulled the trigger on buying a Switch but talked myself out of it with Monster Hunter World around the corner on the PS4. Looks like Nintendo will get by without my support.
Great news! Kinda sucks for Xenoblade 2 though. Pretty underrated game. Having a blast with it!
More than everything else combined again! Vita seems to be getting a like love too.
Saying more than everything combined is kind of an understatement... It's almost double everything else combined
Madness !!
Keep Kicking PS4 butt, Nintendo Switch !
Btw...
I didn't realize if there was a Remake of Tale of Two Towns.
I bet for English version it will be called Story of Seasons : Tale of Two Towns
That's a massive jump for Xbox One. Not even the the 4K version, just the base model.
Not a surprise since mobile/portable gaming is huge in Japan.
@iLikeUrAttitude It is a surprise, even if mobile/portable gaming is huge in Japan.
nintendo couldve had these sales since launch if they could even remotely have kept up w demand in japan. its been in stock everywhere else in the world for the last few months, but japan is just now getting reasonable stock?
baffling, but i wonder if nintendo trusts their brand in japan so much that they felt they could afford to wait on the homeland while they kept the rest of the world stocked up, happy and having good pr and brand recognition
As expected, Mario hit the million and Splatoon 2 the million and half before the end of the year.
BRAVO!!!
....Did that lady buy two of em? I thought she was in the other photo that NL uses when the switch sells like gangbusters.
Rofl, that Pro boost because of the MH World edition surely lasted nothing
If I was PlayStation, I'd be starting to worry!
Incredible numbers. Wow.
It is the UK in reverse. Lol
Seems like everything got a pre-Christmas boost. Even Xbox One and Vita.
Switch is out of control though.
Question, does these all account for digital sales? I looked it up and apparently it didn't, but still I'm curious.
Wii U sales up by 7% - the comeback is on, you little beauty!
@Agramonte I don’t think the UK has ever been a Nintendo stronghold. A lot of people see it as a kids brand sadly. Love my switch. Best purchase I’ve made this year(bought in May)
I'm most likely missing something, but Yo-kai Watch seems to have incredible support in Japan to launch as #1 at this time of the year.
And fantastic news for Nintendo and gamers alike. Big sales numbers will bring more developer support. Great games keep landing on the system, and there are still more to come. And this is just the first year for the Switch.
I say the Switch will pass Wii U sales number before the end of the year if it keeps going like this.
Well I thought it would be a stretch to reach 200k sales in one week but there they go beating that figure by 10%! Hopefully this week is just as strong. I'm not sure if Japan is as crazy with deals and sales the week after the holidays but here in Canada that week is our version of the U.S.'s Black Friday.
The Switch looks poised to sell over 750k in Japan alone for the month of December. Do these weekly figures start on the previous Monday and end on the Sunday?
Apparently try predictions for this week coming are approaching 300K as this is the biggest shopping week in Japan every year. I have no doubt though that if Nintendo keep up their supply to Japan they could be hitting 100K every week for at least the first 6 months of 2018 if Demand still hasn't been met and I'd wager that all Consoles sold this week again were the full shipment to Japan.
I feel like if they had released Xenoblade in the fall it would have been huge.
@Mr_Pepperami unfortunately the UK is a country of dominating FIFA and CoD. I’m too disappointed that people here are closed for the great Nintendo games.
So it's sold around 3 million in Japan in less than a year, while the PS4 has only sold around 5.5 after almost 4 years.
Quite the bitter pill to swallow for all the PlayStation fans who love Japanese games and assumed Japanese people equally loved PlayStation as much as they did...
I made the prediction a month or two ago that the Switch would sell 3.5 to 4.0 million units by the end of the year in Japan. Looks like the Switch will fall at the lower end of my prediction (3.5 million).
The Switch is still supply constrained in Japan for the most part. This week is the first week the Switch has been somewhat readily available on Amazon. It only took 9+ months and the Christmas holiday lol.
@gcunit That absolutely needs one last Talking Point article from Thomas. 3 years ago we could have only DREAMED of a 7% increase in WiiU sales!
@Mr_Pepperami Yeah, every market has their thing. Most of my friends in Spain see Nintendo as the system for their kids. I mean, It is the only System with a 1st party dedicated Parental control App for iPhone. So Nintendo feeds into it.
I was going to get my Nephew a PS4 for Christmas - but my sister-in-law said no. I have a Switch for him instead - so that mentality exist in the States also.
Not really mine (got it in March). My Ryzen5 wins that honor (replaces a POS i3 6100)
@yuwarite Japan has loved Nintendo (3DS) more than Playstation for the past 6 years. Nothing new there.
Wow, incredible I love it! Happy days are here again
😃
The number definitely shows that Ninty and Switch can't be top but some people still thinks Nintendoom will happen.
@sinalefa It looks like a bunch of the Switch titles have gotten sizable boosts during this holiday period (even Zelda which normally isn't as popular as the other regions).
i'm glad that nintendo finally got their stock together
Switchzilla continues to stomp all over Japan. Mothra (Sony) cannot be happy about this .
Almost a quarter million units moved in 1 week with no discounts... that's nuts!
@JaxonH Wii U too! 5 more people bought one.
Nintendo is selling almost 1M Switch units per month on Japan, thats freaking CRAZY! So happy!
When Pokemon and Animal Crossing comes out it will be the end of all.
@Jimmy_G_Buckets buy it! Do it!
So Monolith Soft cater to anime waifu craziness and still is selling abysmally poor on Japan. I hope that teach them that good games surpass fetiches.
I love Xeno franchise and love Xeno 2 but those fake titties of Pyra and the constant cut to her tits like hey did u saw how hot she is, makes me want to sell the game from time to time. I think is just ridiculous!
Splatoon is a beast in Japan. 1.5million sold. And Zelda slowly creeping up, could possibly hit 1million by the end of its run.
Monster hunter world will be the big changer for ps4.
Nintendo and Capcom better have worked out a plan!
So good to see this, and thinking about the past with slow news, sad news and everything failing and falling.
The world turns, let's hope that Nintendo and us keep rolling and turning too!
@Ernest_The_Crab
This week's sales numbers of those evergreen put other new releases to shame. I hope Zelda keeps increasing.
@NEStalgia It's just funny how certain Japanophile PlayStation fanboys brag about Japanese games, yet Japan doesn't share their same brand loyalty to Sony. It's like a sharp kick in the nuts to everything they socially identify with, lol.
@yuwarite
The PS1, PS2, and PSP have each sold over 20 million units in Japan. Don't let PS3 and PS4's sales make you believe that Japan "doesn't share their same brand loyalty to Sony", because at one point, Sony dominated the Japanese gaming industry.
Sony simply dropped the ball with PS3 and decided to focus almost solely on the west with the PS4.
@westman98 Certainly, but regardless, Sony has been out of Japan's good graces for a long time. The people that equate Playstation with Japanese preferences are a decade+ behind the times. Japan has been Nintendo Land IRL for some time. (+ mobile even moreso of course.)
@NEStalgia
The disastrous PSP to PS Vita transition (20 million => 6 million) basically ended Sony's relevance in Japan.
Even with the failure of the Wii U, the 3DS maintained great success and only trails the original DS and Gameboy family in sales in Japan. It doesn't seem like the Switch will be able to match the 3DS in Japan, but it is certainly following in its footsteps.
This is crazy.
@westman98 indeed! Hard to say if switch will match or outpace it yet. It's premium priced without a budget model yet, and no Pokemon yet. And atop that it's still supply constrained rather than demand constrained, so we've yet to see where demand really ends compared to 3ds which never really suffered shortages.
That's just incredible, especially considering no new Switch game came out.
Some Japanese 3rd parties really need to quit beating around the bush and just get on board with the Switch. At this rate, the Switch is gonna surpass the PS4's Japanese LT sales in its first 18 months(probably even less.)
@NEStalgia
Agreed. There is certainly a lot of upside for the Switch. While I won't say that the Switch will outperform the 3DS in Japan right now, the potential is certainly there.
But even if the Switch can't match the 3DS in Japan, better western sales and software support will easily make up the difference.
@NEStalgia, if the switch continue to get good games, and the 3ds is winding down, I have no doubt that switch will surpass 3ds sales in Japan.
@yuwarite Hard time understanding your post. People who picked a PS4 over a X1 because they loved playing Japanese games have been doing just that for the past 4 years. That has not changed now that the Switch is out - I still need a PS4 to play my Japanese games in 2018.
Oh My. 😁😁😁 Switch is killing the competition.
You are winner hahaha!! You are winner hahaha!!
The end of the year party at Nintendo this year is probably gonna be mind blowing. I hope they have paramedics on standby to deal with the alcohol poisoning from all the celebratory sake and champagne.
They fully deserve to party. I'd say the Switch has blown away all expectations at this point. Even loyal Nintendo fan that I am, I never imagined it doing so well.
@Lord really doubt so since ps4 dun support crossplay.... maybe most will get the PC version ?_?
@readyletsgo
70 mil worldwide sales of PS4, I think Sony is doing ok.
Congrats to Xbox for making it into 4 digits
Can we not use the same pic over and over again plzzzz..... and their teeth... need serious cares.
@kokjopan lol, I hear ya! I know people can't help it, but I hate manky teeth.
This is just insane. I was six weeks in Tokyo this autumn and I saw zero Switches on the shop shelfs. Always sold out everywhere.
Only online retailers were selling with horrible overpriced price tags and the only physical consoles I saw were in used game shops. Even in those the prices were insane. 50000 yen for a used Switch.
From where are these +200k consoles coming from!?!
I do like arms still being picked up. Very good game, that one
When is the last time, maybe outside launch that any console topped 200k in a week? What is the all time record for Japan?
I was shopping in Australia last night, I had picked up a switch a couple of weeks back - and my brother in-law was looking for one.
The JB hi-fi I was at was sold out - and we looked at the stock units in the computer for all stores. 3/20 stores had stock left, maybe 20 units in all.
So it's very close to sold out now in Australia - full price, no discounts.
