Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is an excellent game that is slowly getting extra content through a season pass. As a festive treat, however, Ubisoft is rolling out a free update (on 8th December) that'll add a Versus Mode.
Played locally, each player will choose three characters and pick between pre-set loadouts, ensuring things stay balanced, and there are optional items to shake things up further. The announcement video is below.
It also tweaks the rules a little to ensure that one team can't simply wipe out the other too quickly (you're limited to 'action tickets' - our chums at Eurogamer went hands on and show it off in the video below.
It seems like a really nice addition and will give players another way - aside from co-op - to share the game with buddies.
Will you try this out?

I need to get back to this game and finish it. I totally dropped it and forgot about it when I started Fire Emblem Warriors, which in turn was dropped for Mario Odyssey.
Still need to pick this up someday. Free content is always welcome.
blinks Because I really need more multiplayer options on the Switch right now. Well, it's about time I'll be able to wipe the floor with my roommate in a strategy game at least, gonna put this to good use.
Insert obligatory whining about Ubisoft country blocking their videos
Hmmm, more of a co-op person myself but free is nice.
This is the best update ever. Should've been there day one but I can see this giving new life to the game.
Free you say?
Always nice to see a company add stuff to a game for free even though there is a paid season pass.
The fact that we haven't picked this up yet, and honestly it's a ways down the list, shows just how many games Switch has gotten in it's first 9 months.
Quite a nice surprise. We have just about 100% the game but will be happy to jump back in and play some PvP. This game is one of the best of the year and hope it gets the recognition it deserves in terms of awards.
Does the update remove Ubisoft from existence?
Wow !
Nice !
But it still more Additional characters.
Let's add with Wario & Waluigi (there are Bwahrio & Bwahluigi as well), Princess Daisy & Bwahisy , Rosalina & Bwohsalina, Miis, Donkey & Diddy Kong, etc.
Great game. Close to 100%.
This will make it even better. Haven't played since oddysse but will definitely play again.
Rabbid Luigi number 1
Local only? Pass.
No online play?... we are 2 steps away from 2018 and they making local co-op only. LOL!
This will be a welcome addition when my son finally gets the game for Christmas.
Versus mode is always good in games like these......still wish SteamWorld Heist had it as an option
I haven't experienced such a fantastic collection of Nintendo games in such a short period of time since the launch of the SNES.
I'll be all over this when the update is available.
@XenoShaun @Agramonte It will at least save you the hassle of the Nintendo' online service and bring you closer to your local Switch players. Streetpass maybe?
The game is obviously selling really well for them to do this.I noticed it re-entered the download charts this past week. Black Friday sales will have helped a lot.
Yes! Yes! Yes! This is what I needed to get more use out of this game! The co-op mode was fun but having to unlock hard made everything too easy.
It's a free update and some people will still find a way to complain. Online would be nice, but its free. For families and such, this will be a great addition.
OMYGOODNESS MEGA HYPE!!
A perfect game just got better.
This is the best game on Switch, IMO (even though I love SMO, BotW, MK8D, Splatoon 2, etc)
@Spoony_Tech Why should there? There is more than enough content in the game. It's a good way to pick it up again for people who already finished it. Plus, it's free.
Will take any excuse to play more Mario + Rabbids
Online play would be amazing! I wish I had a real-life gaming buddy or two like I did when I was younger.
@rjejr I loved this game. I hope you give it a try.
@okeribok All my friends have the same work schedule/family responsibilities I do. And my cousins are spread over 3 US States and Madrid.
My co-op play consist of a few hrs at night when we all see who is online. If we finally find time to get together in the same room, we do not really play videogames.
This is good for my Brother who plays with my little nephew at home - but Games should really have both options at this point.
@okeribok I don't have local friends due to personal problems, but just find it quite weird as this type of thing wouldn't fly on any of the other consoles.
Not saying it is inherently an issue, but wish online would start becoming a normal thing. Not something we have to pray to the seven Gods and hope it could be considered.
@thesilverbrick same thing happened to me. I can't manage life and these games
@thesilverbrick Stop dropping games and finish what you started.
@Agramonte People are chastising Switch games for "local multi only", meanwhile all other platforms don't even recognize local multi as a thing and everything is online only which is frustrating when you want to play locally.
Awesome! I love this game.
If this mode makes it online, that would be incredible!
Sweet. Any additional opportunities to boot-stomp my 8 year old are welcomed. Lock n load, son.
@NEStalgia Which is also a ridiculous expectation on their part. I can understand certain games maybe not having local (mainly the cpu intensive ones) but mostly it is stupid to cut off that demographic of users.
We shouldn't just be stuck with one extreme or the other.
@XenoShaun Yep. Heck, even if it's CPU intensive, why not let me just play locally with two Playstations/XBoxes/PCs(like PCs supported for decades before magically stopping.) A base PS4/X1 is cheaper than a Switch, and PCs deal with LAN by default. It wouldn't be crazy to support LAN play with two of them.
1996: Diablo, Warcraft II, enter an IP address or host name for other player to connect to. Didn't matter if it was 3 continents over or on the same hub (remember when we used hubs instead of switches?) if it could resolve, it worked. Flash forward, and we suddenly can't see the local network. Or, rather, only Nintendo seems to be able to and 3rd parties including Ubisoft/Nintendo cooperatives can't.
@NEStalgia Nop - people complain about both when they get cut. Either way it is frustrating.
I need a new game plus mode. Thats all that will bring me back
That's actually really cool. Too bad it's local only, though.
Always happy for more local multiplayer options. I’d never even try this online. Co-Op has been fun and this should be interesting. Very cool that it is free too.
Why only local? I've got no use for that.
If they'd add online multiplayer, I might actually buy that game again.
@Agramonte Local co-op is a fantastic feature that other platforms ignore. Online co-op is not an essential feature to every game.
@Cosats Online play is a fantastic feature that Nintendo ignores. Local co-op is not an essential feature to every game.
See how that works? also, Having online play on SRPG is older than dirt.
@TheWorkingDead I hope so too. We'll see what Switch has in 2018, whenever Nintnedo feels so inclined as to tell us.
@sketchturner I agree too, this has been one of my favourites! I really wish I had friends who love video gaming like I do!
Never thought I would hear such a thing from Ubisoft! A free content update? Nintendo must have pushed them to it, or Ubisoft is looking to make a new deal of some sort with them.
Loved the game. One of the best on the Switch still.
Nice update! Maybe online coop and versus are coming soon, but (here's the caveat)...they won't be free.
