Anniversary: It's Been 10 Years Since Super Mario Galaxy Landed On The Wii

I enjoyed Galaxy, it was an amazing game and the sequel was even better. I can't comment on Odyssey.

I prefer Odyssey but both are great. Wouldn’t be opposed to a Galaxy Collection on Switch or even Galaxy 3. I’m also itching to return to Isle Delfino with F.L.U.D.D.

I love Both of them.
But still... i adore Odyssey better than Galaxy.
If Galaxy Remastered on Switch in 1080p, 60 fps, OMG..... !!

Galaxy is probably my favorite game ever. Would love to see SMG 3, or an HD release of the first two games, on Switch. But Odyssey is pretty fantastic also.

But all of them are incredible.

In art direction Odyssey wins in it's uniqueness of the look of EVERYTHING. The music in Galaxy is great but in Odyssey it's much more "ownable", meaning you can't as easily transpose Odyssey's score onto other games or movies and have it still work /is more distinct and memorable. Odyssey wins in general tone and mood for me too (the cute is way better balanced here with the weird and the unsettling and the dark and the et).. But as for gameplay, the most important bit obviously, the main game's post main story content will decide that for me. Just "beat" the main story last night and overall it didn't satisfy my platforming itch. As it stands right now, I think my top 5 Mario games would be: Mario 3, Galaxy 1/2, Odyssey, Yoshi's Island and 3D World.

Galaxy's camera killed me so I'm on team Odyssey all the way.

@Anti-Matter playing Galaxy 2 on my Wii just today, just for old times sake. Via a good set-up - I'm running component to a Samsung 19 LCD TV with Game Mode selected - it looks/runs as good today as I remember at launch. A decent set-up can be the difference between poor and premium.

The great thing about it is why chooses? I've still my Wii, WiiU and Switch, so if I'm in the mood for Galaxy 1 or 2, SM3DW or Odyssey, it's game on. Odyssey is my fave as it stands today, but ask me tomorrow, things change. I think each has it's merits, each are both innovative and inspired. Solo I'm playing Galaxy or Odyssey, multiplayer SM3DW owns it. All 4 games 10 out of 10.

Super Mario Galaxy has better music, an amazing atmosphere, a surprisingly good story, and the best ending in the series.

Odyssey has a ton of post-game content, an innovative central gameplay mechanic, and amazingly fun exploration-based gameplay.

I need to fully complete both games again before I can say which I prefer more.

I think because Odyssey is new and the game everyone's playing it would easily out vote Galaxy. If you could play both for the first time back to back, that would probably completely change the poll.

Galaxy 2 is still my favourite of the three at the moment. Odyssey is getting close, however, the more I get through it.

I really need to replay the Galaxy titles to make an informed decision. I remember them being some of my favorite games of all time but it’s somehow been over 6 years since I’ve played them.

Personally I thought Galaxy was great but one of the weaker 3D entries ahead of only 3D World. The planet's were always too small and restrictive when compared with Mario 64 and Sunshine. I would put Odyssey up there with Mario 64 as the greatest ever 3D platformers and in my top 5 games of all time

I like Odyssey way more. To be honest, I don't really find linear Mario games that fun. I didn't even bother finishing Galaxy 2.

From a purely visual standpoint I prefer Galaxy, it feels more like a Mario game to me. A lot of Odysseys levels are too "realistic" for my taste.

That said I will still say Galaxy is the better game. The stars feel much more rewarding to find. In Odyssey you can sneeze and find 2 or more power moons. They're are just too many of them to have them all be interesting to obtain, hence I prefer the stars of Galaxy.

I’ll never forget the first time I played Galaxy. The soundtrack blew me away.

I loved Galaxy of course but I didn't like the menu hub type thing they had. Also loved 3D World just as much if not more. Not played Odyssey yet but the parallels drawn to it with sandbox Mario 64 style worlds makes me think I'll prefer it to Galaxy...

Galaxy 1+2 are two of the best games I’ve ever played. Sm3dw was great but just didn’t blow me away like those did. Odysessy is great so far but I’m only 10 hours in, I don’t feel right voting since I’ve 100% both smg games (1) 3x and (2) 2x. But I know I’ll be 100% atleast 1x. Ask again in like 2 months...

The Galaxy games were excellent in their own right, but I definitely prefer the freedom in Odyssey to Galaxy’s linear approach to stars.

They’re both great games in their own right but Odyssey has the edge by virtue of being a proper sandbox whereas Galaxy is just a linear platformer with sandbox progression.

Haven't played Odyssey yet, but Mario Galaxy was my "game of the generation," so it's going to be hard to topple.

I played both Galaxy games, completing them both multiple times and while I certainly enjoyed them there was undeniably something missing, I had always yearned for a return to 64's style of gameplay so you can imagine how excited I was when Odyssey was made to replicate that, but with modern bells and whistles. It is better than those two mianly because it feels like a proper adventure, something most recent Mario games have lacked.

Super Mario Galaxy was an absolute joy, I fell in love with that game right from the first Galaxy. I traded Super Paper Mario against it at the time. Everything about it made me smile, and I was so happy when they announced Galaxy 2. I remember it being dismissed, by some, as just more of the same... but that was music to my ears!

Definitely in the minority, especially on this site, but I wasn't a fan of Galaxy. It was a good game that was fun at times, but I thought Galaxy 1 and 2 were the weakest of the 3D console Mario games. It didn't have the exploratory nature of Sunshine or 64, which I wasn't a fan of. It also didn't have the amazing creativity and tight linearity that 3D World had. It's in an awkward middle between linearity and open-world in which it tries to do a bit of both and messes up in both. I also thought the gravity shtick was good at first but got annoying when almost every level was based off of it. Again, 3D World did a better job introducing new concepts and making each level unique IMHO.

Galaxy 1 and 2 also had issues due to the Wii itself. Incredibly annoying waggle, a terrible camera with no second stick camera control, annoying pointer controls due to the Wii's sensor bar, etc. All in all I'd definitely rank Galaxy 1 and 2 lower than the others, although an HD re-release with normal controllers and no motion/pointer controls would help improve my opinion.

I'd rank the 3D Mario console games as: Odyssey (haven't played it yet but I expect it to be here) > Sunshine > 3D World > 64 > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I still insist you should play 3D World to the end, it might solve your issues with the game's difficulty considering it gets much tougher in World 9.

Speaking of difficulty, I found Galaxy to be a disappointingly easy game, which Galaxy 2 fixed.

I'm gonna have to say Galaxy. I think the music, atmosphere and gameplay we're better (also helps that I love space). Plus, Galaxy had a subtle story going on underneath that I think really added to it. It's one reason I don't like Galaxy 2 as much. Well that and the fact Galaxy 2 somewhat strangely acted like the first game never happened. Being a direct sequel, I'd expect some form of continuity, but it is Mario we're talking about. Plus I didn't feel Galaxy 2 did anything new or interesting. I felt like I was retreading all the same ground. Galaxy > Odyssey > Galaxy 2 for me. I would like to replay the Galaxy games at some point, and at the very least Galaxy 2 has the same fun gameplay even if it did feel like a retread to me.

Galaxy was perfect. One of the best games ever. It made so much fun flying between different gravitational zones. Odyssey has nothing on it, gameplay wise.

@Ryu_Niiyama Gotta agree with you, camera was terrible. Though part of that was the Wii's fault and how it didn't include a 2nd analog stick for camera control in its default control scheme.

I just couldn’t understand 3d games before Galaxy. It may be my favourite game, it is magical.

I’m really enjoying Odyssey but it doesn’t hold the same wonder for me, yet. Although New Donk City certainly does.

I haven't played enough of Odyssey yet to make a decision. I think my all time favorite would be between Galaxy 2 and 3D World.

Odyssey is a true platform-adventure game. Lots of exploration in big open level. Like 3d platformers used to be, when 3d games arrived back in the 90's.

Odyssey continues this good old genre from Mario 64 and Sunshine. I just love these type of platform-adventures from back then.

The Galaxy games somehow tried to re-invent 3d Mario as a more pure platform experience, with not so much emphasis on "adventure". Nintendo went back to Mario's 2d roots, when it came to game structure and smaller, more linear level.

I really loved what Nintendo did back then, and Galaxy is one of my absolute favorite games. But I think I like the adventure Mario better, so my vote goes to Odyssey.

Odyssey is fun and all, but I think the Galaxy games and Mario 64 are all better games.

Odyssey suffers from it's massive size, many of the worlds and missions just feel samey and generic to me, and the game hands out Power Moons at such frequent pace that they barely even feel like a reward. Also disappointingly enough I think the soundtrack is overall very meh, which was bit of a shocker for me considering how great the Galaxy and 3D World soundtracks were.

Both Galaxy games were awesome- would love to see Galaxy 3!! Odyssey is great but that wow factor was not as great as back then!

Both were great. Though I liked the Galaxy series more.

Galaxy is a classic. Between its anniversary and Odyssey's release, I've been reminded again of why I love Mario so much. I can't really choose, both are great for different reasons. Altough I have more nostalgia for Galaxy, for obvious reasons. Also, something that I do know I like better is Galaxy's soundtrack. It's phenomenal. They went all-out with the music on both Galaxy games.

Super Mario Galaxy was the pinnacle of the 3D Mario games, but I still hold them in high regard like Odyssey (although I like Galaxy 2 more)

I struggled with going back and forth between using the pointer controls and the button controls in the Galaxy games. I have no such issues with Odyssey.

Whilst I loved Odyssey Galaxy still ranks as my top Mario game alongside its sequel. It had a grand, epic sensation accompanied by a spectacular music score.

You mean worse! It was just a Galaxy level-pack. With no hub-world (sadly that also seems the case with Odyssey). It did have cool ideas though, and a higher difficulty thanks to the green stars.

As an overall game I prefer Sunshine (I know it’s not the topic of debate) but I prefer Odyssey over Galaxy. Mainly due to the exploration. With so many moons it pays to spin the camera off a ledge or round a corner to see what’s lurkin’

@justin233 I think a Sunshine HD on Switch is likely to happen. Probably next year. Then they will release NSMB Switch in 2019. Or maybe the reverse will occur, but they will make sure you have plenty of Mario to play on your Switch.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Gotta agree with you there. 3D World is definitely a fun game, but the 3D Land formula that worked so well on 3DS definitely didn't work when transposed onto Wii U. It just felt so limited, especially when compared to the majesty that was the Galaxy series.
Galaxy, on the other hand, is basically the perfect game IMHO. Beautiful music, amazing gameplay, great atmosphere, perfect difficulty balance...I could go on and on!

im only on Luncheon and have 207 moons under my belt but i must im torn between galaxy and odyssey...Galaxy1 is my favorite and so far Odyssey is remarkable and im having a blast but im not convinced i prefer it to Galaxy1...maybe that will change as i progress but Galaxy1 felt like a true sequel to Mario64 no offense to sunshine

Odyssey is brilliant. Tough to say if it's better than Galaxy, but both games are nearly perfect anyway.

I wish the Mario Galaxy's gravity-oriented platforming was in Mario Odyssey in some form, but based on what I've played thus far, it doesn't appear to be in it .

I haven't played enough of Oddesy just yet to make a fully educated comment but from what bits I have played so far, the signs are looking good for Galaxy's crown to be stolen. As I say early days yet though.

I played it all day on Friday when it released but for one reason or another haven't had much chance to play since, hate it when life just gets in the way.

For what it's worth I believe Galaxy was an absolute master piece and will take some serious beating, although when playing it today it is starting to looking a little rough around the edges in comparison to the newer HD games.

It is all about the game play though so graphics aren't the deciding factor

Super Mario 64 and Sunshine are my favourite ones. The Galaxy games have great ideas but the small planets and camera are a pain.

It's almost impossible for me to even contemplate this question. I love Galaxy so much and have played it dozens of times. I consider it a genuine masterpiece. Odyssey is just as good, but in a different way. It doesn't blow me away like Galaxy did, but there's a level of fun that comes from its open-play nature that Galaxy didn't have. If some of Odyssey's worlds were just slightly larger, I'd feel more compelled to put it ahead of Galaxy, but as it is I feel like they're just a little too small for how few of them there are. So they're basically tied, is what I'm saying.

@shadow-wolf It also panned out too widely and quickly for me, often causing disorientation when performing any precision jumps. Although just like you said that was really due to how Nintendo had to tie the camera and the control scheme.

This is a pretty tough decision. Both games are amazing and I loved both of them quite a lot. Though in the end I think I'm going to have to give the edge to Odyssey, if only for a certain aspect that I don't want to spoil for people, but folks who know me probably know why.

Super Mario 64 and Sunshine had a lot of imaginative situations. Sunshine was a bit hardcore regarding the blue coins but a sequel with ideas from both games would be the perfect Mario 3D game. Remember the owl, kicking the plank..., the balance between freedom and challenges in those classics?

I haven't played Odyssey yet, so I can't really comment on which is better. What I CAN say is that the first Super Mario Galaxy is my favorite 3D Mario game! Galaxy 2 did improve and add a few new things, but I still prefer the original.

I never got into Mario Galaxy. It was fun but going upside down confused me, do I push the stick up or down? I enjoyed Odyssey and beat it already, now I’m finding a lack of motivation to gather all the power moons. Honestly I wanted to be playing Stardew Valley this weekend but forced myself to beat Mario Odyssey. I did enjoy the ending of Odyssey and it was worth it.

Any chance of being on virtual console whenever that’s ready. Tremendous Mario fan, but never played either galaxy game. I know , sad.....

Galaxy was amazing for it's time (and still has one of the best stories in any Mario game) but Odyssey is a game changer...much like Mario 64.

Like many other here, I think Galaxy is the best Mario game ever. For all the nostalgia of SM64, Galaxy remains unbelievably cool. Plus, the gravity mechanic ties in with **every** aspect of the game, tying the game together amazingly well.

Didn't have a chance to play Galaxy 2 until recently, and I was amazed at how something that could be easily described as "just some more Galaxy levels" doesn't drop the bar one bit, at times surpassing the original with its wild imagination and never-ending surprises.

I don't own a Switch yet, so can't comment. But I believe you, NL, that it's good.

I have watched LIVE from my game shop once for almost 1 hour when there was a customer tried her game (Mario Odyssey), i saw with my own eyes a 900p and 60fps game on big 43' TV last 31 Oct 2017 after i got Mario Odyssey for my own (Too bad, I still can't play right now)

Also, i have ever watched some gameplay from Youtube and i didn't watch all ( Only the Beginning parts) to avoid Spoilers.

I could tell Mario Odyssey much like Sunshine + 64 in HD. Very Great, despite i have never been played Mario 64 before.

I still have Mario galaxy and Mario galaxy 2 on my Wii u digital pile of shame.

I must be in the minority that likes 3D Land more than 3D World. I didn't like the cat power up and the whole game was way too easy. Even in world 9. Land felt much more like a Mario experience. 3D World should have been a Mii game or something. Maybe alot of Nintendo characters or something. Kinda like a Smash bros. but a platformer instead of a fighter.

Don't have Odyssey yet. To be honest I enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy more on my second playthrough more than the first, as I found it hard to get used to Mario's run speed being much slower than in Sunshine.

Galaxy games are INFINITELY better because you can play as Luigi. That simple.

@Anti-Matter You really should play Super Mario 64 (not the DS version), I was hoping that a remaster would happen but who knows when at this point. A Sunshine remaster with clues about blue coins should be done as well.

I had to check the Galaxy box, although is not completely fair. I haven't finished Odyssey and I am falling in love with it.

Hard to believe a decade has already passed. I remember first playing Mario Galaxy like it was yesterday.

When it comes to 3D Mario games, Odyssey and the two Galaxy games are pretty tough to beat. 3D Land was pretty great, too. Never really got into 64 or 3D World.

Odyssey is my favorite 3D Mario game, I'm far enough in it now that I'm confident in saying that, but Galaxy is still an amazing game. Remember going to the store to pick it up on launch like it was yesterday, it was easily my most anticipated game of 2007 (just like SMO was my most anticipated for this year) and it lived up to the hype in every way. I appreciate some of Odyssey's call backs to Galaxy, a lot is definitely owed to that game. I think of the SMG series I liked 2 more but being a sequel the impact wasn't the same as when the original hit. I missed the openness provided by SM 64 but it was made up for in spades with the variety and creativity that went into all the different planets and there were some great boss fights.

We have Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros, both for the Wii. We have Super Mario 3D land for 3DS, and now we have Super Mario Odyssey for the Switch.
The music of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is so lovely, that it remains with us. It was played by my son, who is now a teen, and he bought the Odyssey. If someone says they are similar then we need to accept their point, but we still play each of them.

Definitely had more fun playing Galaxy initially. I wonder if Galaxy 2 is splitting the vote here. I rank galaxy 1 higher since it was more original and I liked the hub world and story better. Galaxy 2 was great but it was like outtakes and bonus levels leftover that didn't make it in the first game.

I am not in love with Odyssey so far the way I was with Galaxy. Maybe that will change as I get more in to the game as I have stayed pretty spoiler free so far. The camera is a big issue for me. I don't think I have ever had to manipulate a camera so much in a Mario game before as I do in Odyssey.

Galaxy is my personal favorite 3D Mario game. It took me totally by surprise even though I lived through the N64 era and saw the advances made by Mario 64.

I'd love to see an HD remaster of Galaxy, Nintendo.

@Octane I thought it ranges from 900p to 1080p while docked. Especially in places like crazy cap store. Not 100% sure tho

@BlueOcean That's probably what it should have been called. It's just such a bland game compared to the other 3D Mario games. It's like an entry level 3D Mario for 5 year olds to start with.

Im a bit over the motion controls of odyessy. Especially when playing handheld and not being able to do certainly moves without nearly throwing your switch across the room. They were also the worst part of galaxy except for the IR pointing.
I appreciate nintendo is trying to extend the range of gaming input but it's just always cumbersome. (with the exception wii sports bowling).

P.s I do love odyessy I just wish it was fully supported in handheld mode. They could've mapped buttons not being used to some of the motion controls triggers ie the dpad

@Mikemario Yes, motion controls are an awful idea in Mario games. Nintendo is always forcing people to use them even though most people don't like them. At least, they should make them optional.

I own a Wii u. Bought the Wii version. Put it in and although I'm not a graphics I don't know how anyone can say it even looks decent. I grew up with a 64 but bad 3d is just terrible. It's much easier playing snes or even nes games in my mind. I know this is a nintendo thread but I bought a 360 as soon as I knew nintendo was going SD. I'm loving their HD stuff though. And if it never comes to HD sure it may be my loss. But I won't know any different. I can't be the only one who ditched nintendo during their Wii days only to come back when things went HD. You'd think there would be a huge market to exploit. I'm fully willing to throw my money at them.

@astonkiller it's not that great actually. It has its signs of scuffs on the edges. The box protector just makes it look new.

I'm little over the motion controls in odyessy. I do love it but in handheld mode it is a little jarring to have a number of moves unavailable especially considering from nintendos own data that handheld is the preferred mode for many people. It reduces it's portability. Map the lost moves to the DPAD nintendo !

I tried the split joy cons but pad is the way for me and feels fitting fir this game

While Odyssey has done the impossible, knocking Zelda out of my GOTY, I think I’ll have to give it time before I can make my decision. I might have to replay Galaxy after I’m finished with Odyssey. Mario 64 is my favourite, but I think nostalgia may be influencing me.

@GoatWrench13 I don't think it is just nostaglia. That first 3d mario on the 64 was genuinely a new dimension in platforming.

@1UP_MARIO there are a number of hat moves you can't do in handheld mode. Or am i missing something? The up toss or the upward hat bounce for e.g.

The controls on this game is great like 64. Good for Beginners and great for skilled players. The places you can reach. Amazing.

I like Odyssey a lot more than Galaxy, but my favorite Mario game of all time is still Super Mario 3D World, followed very closely by Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.

Not counting the New Super Mario and handheld games, my list would go like this:

I can't choose one over the other, especially since I think it's too soon for me to say it (Even though I've beaten both). Galaxy is one of my all-time favorite games, and Odyssey has been fantastic so far, even though it still hasn't completely blown me away like BOTW did earlier this year. Overall, both games are absolutely fantastic and I can't choose between them. I'd put 3D World behind both, but it's still a fun game as well. Haven't finished any of the other 3D Marios (I want to get back to Galaxy 2 at some point, never played Sunshine since I was late to the GameCube and now all its games are expensive, and I know I might end up getting an angry mob after me for this one, but I don't think 64 has aged well at all, and that's coming from someone playing the remake).

Well I actually think SMB 3 on nes is the best Mario game hands down. You can keep your 3d in my opinion.

I loved Galaxy but definitely Odyssey a bit more. It is a joy to play.

Between the 3D Mario titles, I'd say that Oddysey is the most ambitious... but perhaps to a fault. Over 900 moons collected at the pace they are is just crazy, compared to 120 or so stars/shines, with each one being more carefully planned and placed. Galaxy is better paced, has an overall more fantastic sweeping soundtrack, the presentation felt more consistent to the Super Mario series' particular logic historically, and the controls really were just fine. (Funny how the passage of time brings increasingly negative reactions to how Galaxy played as soon as the new kid on the block appears...)

It's always been a difficult balance for having collectathons in 3D platformers, and I think beyond Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie with their 900 notes and 100 jiggies, most haven't gotten it right when there's that many. However, the pace at which notes were collected (not to mention their two-fold purpose- tracking % of level exploration and opening up levels) felt more natural than the rate Moons in Oddysey are collected. It's weird to have such an abundant collectible be given the special treatment each time you find one...

Other than that, I guess it's kind of odd for a mainline 3D Mario title to majorly feature his not oft talked of abusive nature. (Seen in Donkey Kong 3, the ending of Wario Land 1, the Mario&Luigi series, and Mario Power Tennis during the ceremony when Luigi gets the solo trophy.) How does Mario know whether Cappy doesn't feel pain and suffering whenever they're thrown as a weapon, just because they're a poltergeist? Whatever the case, Mario certainly doesn't ask.

Speaking of which, the switch from having dissatisfied diseased clinging to their haunt that can be captured and (potentially) given happiness by displaying the best side of their personalities in Luigi's Mansion, to sentient ethereal beings who are citizens of their own land, and can be coerced or forced into slavery as tools of the living, is a subtly evil turn for the modern Mario franchise... (Granted, Mario committing mass genocide of brickified Toads in the original Super Mario Bros. is probably still the worst of the worst.)

I could go on, but the point is that Galaxy just plain made me feel happy, while Oddysey makes me feel... Odd things I didn't think I could feel about a Mario game.

Galaxy has to be one of my favorite Mario games of all time, but so far Odyssey has left me awake at 5am every time I play it at night. It's such a fun and amazing game. Might even replace Galaxy.

Galaxy and it's no contest. Galaxy 2 beats both too.

Galaxy 2 is my all time favorite Mario game, but I do think it depends on which Galaxy game you played first, which probably has an influence on your preference. I can't comment on Odyssey, but the Galaxy games, especially 2, are pure 3D platforming perfection.

Definitely enjoying the two-player game play in Odyssey a lot more than what was in Galaxy.

Tried Galaxy for 10min, it was boring. Haven't played Odyssey yet.

Impossible question both are amazing in there own way and I have yet to finish Oddessy but Oddessy might have an edge its just that fun and that creative.

I'd say Odyssey is better, really missed the openness and exploration from 64 and sunshine (although I was never a fan of how you used fludd in that game).

I liked how you kind of had to search through the levels in Galaxy 2 to find the green starts but having a fixed camera basically everywhere made it feel a lot more linear compared to the older games.
