EA has shown off some footage of FIFA 18 running on the Nintendo Switch at Gamescom 2017.
The popular football title marks a return of sorts for the series on Nintendo systems, but the gulf in power between the Switch and other home systems has led some to ponder just how good it can possibly look.
During the demonstration, it is stressed yet again that the engine is a totally custom creation for Switch. As expected, it appears to fall between the last-gen versions and the current PS4 and Xbox One editions in terms of visuals.

That actually looks acceptable!
What footage?
@Geeks4Life I see it now
I'm sold.
Looks good.
Had this on pre-order since announced.
That... actually doesn't look half bad.
Game looks incredible... They did a stand up job with this.
Honestly feels like I'm watching footage from Xbox One. Coulda fooled me.
Neat.
I'd still rather a new inazuma eleven game, but this is good too.
Looks really good and will be a lot of fun on the Switch. Looking forward to it, they did a great job with what we've seen.
Looks good enough to me for a low cost first entry. The in game doesn't look too far from the PS4 version. The close up cut scenes fall down massively but who cares
Custom engine looks great! This will be so much fun for some quick local matches on work breaks!
Great job EA. This is going to print money!
Day one
EA came through, I just got a little more confidence in them.
Some people need to eat the humble pie
Looks great! Thanks for the share.
I'm getting a switch and Fifa for our staff recreation room, it'll be a fun way to chill out for the whole team.
This might be the first fifa game I'm going to buy since fifa 99.
They done great. Well done EA
Day 1 for me
My brother will buy his son a Nintendo Switch for Christmas because of this. He got a PS4 because, as much as he loved FIFA 13 on Wii U, he was sad he was stuck with it while his friends got the latest FIFA.
Actually looks pretty solid. Good job EA.
Looks like FIFA 13 for Wii U
Hmm it does look good. Even when the cutscene comes out Im like naww. But hey the game does seem fun. Not too far from ps4 or xbox from the video. Ill buy this in the first week I guess.
Bring. It. On.
I've no interest personally but it's pretty clear they put some decent resource into this, looks pretty good!
Can it be played with a single Joy-con? If not then that's a massive misstep regarding local multiplayer
Looks like FIFA 16 on the PS4 (a.k.a. pre-Frostbite FIFA) which is good enough for a game that is played from a bird's eye perspective. I'm not into FIFA, but if I was, I'd buy this version over the other console versions.
@PlayedNSlayed
Yes it can.
Impressive. Looks like EA have actually put some effort in. A clear step up from the PS3/360 versions (and of course the Wii U and Vita versions as a result) and, in the zoomed-out view I always use, it really looks the part.
@PlayedNSlayed I believe they mentioned that you can.
@westman98
That's good to hear. Could have been obsolete to encourage local play with someone if they themselves don't have a Switch
Honestly im not much of a sports fan some sports game if fun and done well but i think there is too much concern on graphics these days and not as much solid gameplay controls and most important fun factor the replay factor. Im just glad they are making games for the switch and would like to see all the sports so all sports fan can enjoy there favorite sports game at home and on the go.
Gameplay looks good, close ups are terrible with some framerate issues but this doesn't appear to be the case during the core gameplay.
I'll pick this one up. I was worried it was going to be another case of Fifa 13 but if it means EA will actually try to get more of their games on Switch, i'll do my part as long as there has been some effort put into the game.
I'm getting it for PC and Switch. PC for online playing against mates and my brother, Switch whilst I'm out and also in bed. I can see EA treating the Switch the same as PS Vita though, each new version will be the same as the previous year but with the current kits, teams and leagues.
It looks good, but they still could have got it running on the current engine. On PC you could use a toaster and still get 60fps, it's not a game that pushes hardware at all. My GTX 980 can max it at 4K with room to spare at 60fps, no current game could get performance like that at 4K with a 980. I'm still looking forward to it, but the reasons EA gave are lame.
@PlayedNSlayed There's not enough buttons to play it using a single joy con, but if they have like someone said here I have no idea how it'll work.
Played it today at Gamescom. Looked at felt really great in TV mode. I was not entirely sold on handheld mode. It was fluid as in TV mode but the players were rather small when playing like that.
@JaxonH lol...
Doesn't look great, doesn't look terrible. Not much better than FIFA 13 on Wii U and that was a lazy effort. The animations are very wooden but the resolution looks nice. That looks higher than Wii U.
Of course they'd stress "that the engine is a totally custom creation for Switch". They know how they're perceived by Nintendo fans.
I think this will sell well, looks great and I've already pre-ordered. If it sells well then Fifa 19 might have full parity with other consoles
@Roam85
Inazuma eleven developers just teased the game for Switch. I've only ever tried one of them shortly. I would love to get one for Switch.
As for FIFA. I'll be getting it for sure although I don't have a clue how people say it looks good. I thought it looked a bit weird, but acceptable.
Looks legit.
I'll pass ..Looks like garbage!..EA you fail again
The animation is stiff and wooden, but I gotta give EA credit on trying to make it look as good as possible on Switch (aside from the noticeable resolution boost)
@kobashi100 I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that. I definitely agree with you that they should, but unfortunately, I don't see it happening. Sadly, some comments after yours are already a testament to that.
Negative Nancy's will be negative Nancy's, regardless of facts or reality. They're just in their own little cynical bubble, not willing to accept logic or reason, instead concocting and spewing forth their nauseating bile and cantankerous, misinformed view of things...
Looks pretty decent to me. Animations in close up are a bit wooden, but other than that, this actually looks like they put in the effort for once. It may not be right up there with the Xbox One/PS4 versions, but it certainly seems like a better effort than the last generation one, including the Wii U version.
If EA keeps this up, and also starts publishing more of these indie games like the upcoming Fe on the Switch, we may just have to give them the benefit of the doubt again concerning their support of Nintendo platforms...
@MonkiPlays Exactly how I feel. That new story mode on the go would be so awesome.
@ThanosReXXX
These comments are really funny.
It clearly looks better than the last couple of PS3/360 versions that weren't 'Legacy Editions''. They in turn looked clearly better than the Wii U version, which was a port of FIFA 12. The difference is obvious.
If we could have somehow predicted what would happen on these comments beforehand, we would have said "this may get negative comparisons to what people expect from the PC/PS4/XB1 versions graphically but nobody, surely, will compare it to the Wii U version. However, if any two posters will walk into that trap, it will be....."
@electrolite77 Indeed...
Those who expects switch to be on par graphics wise with ps4 or xb1 will definitly be disappointed with any games released for switch. You can never have a 1:1 ratio to dedicated home based console/machine. Let be real here lol your buying switch for the wrong reason. Switch is a hybrid console so you can have a decent home experience but it will never have to full experience (graphics wise). Its like buying a hybrid car saves petrol but you cant expect it to run gtr evo and save petrol.
The graphics look like a PS3 game. So our first glimpse of a game at what the switch is capable of graphics wise, yikes! But I'll still purchase NBA 2k18 for the switch.
Wow... it actually looks good. I'll get it.
@PlayedNSlayed yes, FIFA 18 can be played with single joy-con. But will have some button remap since will miss the triggers on half joy-con mode.
@electrolite77 You can set your watch by them.
Looks like a PS3 game graphically, imo. Impressive as a handheld, not so impressive as a home console. I won't be getting it either way as I don't like football.
why is the video in 720p?
It looks better than I expected.
However fanb sunglasses will make it look even better than the PS4 version for some.
These forums always point out the members who you can't take seriously... on both sides of the coin.
My first FIFA was on Vita and ended up getting an XBOX One in order to play the latest version online. Having a portable version is very tempting and it looks like EA did a good job of bringing FIFA to the Switch. Looks like I'll be getting two versions of FIFA 18.
This looks really great. Been a looooooooooong time since I got a FIFA game, but I think I'll pick this up, if only to support this kind of quality third party effort.
So by "custom" they mean built on the Wii U version?
@Hotfusion
"However fanb sunglasses will make it look even better than the PS4 version for some"
(Looks around for such posts)
(Fails to find any)
FIFA is legimately one of the motivations for me getting a Switch (along with Zelda and Splatoon). I'm beyond excited for this.
As a football fan I would most probably have bought it anyway, but the fact that it has FUT makes it a must buy. I see that they list FUT squad building challenges, but I really hope it will include the FUT squad battles, where you can play others FUT teams on varying difficulties offline as long as you have been connected to get updates. Would be a very nice way to enjoy FUT on the go!
