The incredible demand for the Nintendo Switch has enabled it to jump to the top of the NPD sales charts over the past few months but hardware shortages - driven by a lack of components - have cost the system top spot in May.

According to the latest NPD figures, the PlayStation 4 was the biggest selling console in North America during the month of May, but the Switch's success continues to drive the market. Hardware spend grew 7 percent compared to May 2016 to $147 million, with Switch largely responsible for that boost.

Nintendo games also performed well in the software charts, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild both selling briskly enough to remain in the top 5. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia on the 3DS also made the top 10; it's worth noting that digital sales for all three games were not factored into these results.
