Ubisoft caused a huge stir at the end of its E3 2017 press conference by unveiling Beyond Good & Evil 2, with a visibly emotional Michel Ancel coming on stage to talk about the game.
What we got, primarily, was a glitzy cinematic trailer.
We were told it's set before the original game in 'System 3', before the birth of Jade. It's a distant solar system, where corporations create hybrids to enslave and colonise the stars; the crew you see are fighting for freedom. Ancel promised a "seamless online playground" with a huge galaxy to explore.
No platforms were given as the game is clearly in its early stages. It was once rumoured for Switch, but naturally there are concerns that such an ambitious game would struggle to run on the system. That said, the newly announced Starlink: Battle for Atlas is also notable in scope and is coming to Switch. Some are speculating it'll feature in the Nintendo Spotlight, based upon a previous source that was correct:
It could be a bit of a wait for this one (or not, if Laura Kate Dale is right), but no doubt there are a lot of gamers excited by this news.

If it doesn't Michel Ancel won't be the only one crying...
Great trailer. Now just comfirm it Ubi!
Serious mixed feelings on this for me.
IGN are tagging it to Switch, PS4, XB1, and PC. Wonder if they know for sure?
I'm wondering if they didn't announce platforms or timed exclusivity for Switch or whatever, because perhaps Nintendo will make the announcement in the direct tomorrow?
Long shot though
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAYN08YoaV8 - for those the video isn't working for
Now LKD claims Nintendo are going to discuss it in their Spotlight tomorrow, formally announcing their exclusivity then.
I doubt that.
@MrGawain Probably just covering all bases for now
The art style makes me hold onto the smallest glimmer of hope that we may see it!! Would love to play it on the go but if not, that's why I have a PS4
I see no reason to believe it would be on the Switch.
I doubt it will make it to PS4 or Xbox One either, more like PS5 and Xbox Eleven, it's been 9 NINE years since the original BG&E2 trailer.
http://kotaku.com/5011404/ubisoft-officially-announces-beyond-good--evil-2/
Ubisoft officially won E3 because of this. I am incredibly hyped right now
I just hope Ubi realizes how many Nintendo fans were clamoring for a sequel. This won't be very profitable in the first place, so it wouldn't make sense to ignore a sizable portion of the fan base.
Personally tried the first one twice on Cube and Xbox and couldn't get into it.
Really pleased though for the many people who've been waiting a long time for this.
@MrGawain If you click the link for Switch it specifically says they don't know if it will be on Switch or not.
I'd be shocked if it hits Switch.
Shout out to NL though for linking to the GCN original.
After that trailer I'll be amazed if there's a Switch version.
I don't know if it'll release on Switch, but I'm certain they won't release this trailer, let PS4 and Xbox One owners talking about it, only to let one or both of them down.
Oh yeah, it's a Switch exclusive cause Laura Kate Dale said so. Of course! Can't wait for Nintendo to (not) talk about it tomorrow!
lets hope we get this one as payback for letting them have MARIO.
hope it does come still we got 3 switch games reveal so far so pretty descent.
Highly doubt this comes to the Switch with those graphics on that reveal.
They want the community to "help developing the game" so I doubt we see it before 2019.
Hopefully the leakers are as right about this as Rabbids x Mario. Not convinced though, either that it'll be on Switch, that the trailer looked all that great, or that it'll be out before 2020.
This was their best showing for sure. I reaaaaally want this to be on Switch (even a multiplat port, doesn't need to be exclusive) but I have a feeling it won't be. Then again, it is somewhat strange they haven't announced platforms yet which they wouldn't be reluctant to do if it was on PS4/X1.
Either way, I'm covered. I own every console and miss nothing... but my preference will always be Switch.
That was a SURPRISING amount of language for a game that is a sequel to a 7+ rated adventure game lol. I hope they done go all mature on this one, I absolutely adored the first game.
The site is live now!!
People this in not a game, is just the answer to the ratchet and clank movie of last year.
Just a big wall of black smoke.
I would love for this to be on Switch as a one year exclusive, but I just don't see Ubi turning their noses up and the Sony and Microsoft fan base.
Either way I just want the game on Switch as this would consist of the AAA 3rd party titles I was hoping for.
I was hoping to see gameplay but this trailer was still awesome.
None of the links on the site seem to work. I can't register with the space monkey program...
On release platform it's just blank, so no new announcements on the site
@Dakt along with Mario NX and Splatoon Deluxe at launch...
Cinematic trailer sure, but it looks too good to come to switch..
Since it's a pure CGI trailer and no actual gameplay has been shown, it could (in theory) come to Switch.
Since when did beyond good and evil feature that sort of language? Really trying hard to impress the 'hardcore' crowd eh?
This was literally the only game they showed that didn't have a platform listing. There is clearly something at play here. Guess we'll see tomorrow.
The trailer put me in tears.
Going by all the other games not coming to switch, and they all push the graphics I very much doubt this will be on the switch.
Never played the original...
.... SO here's hoping for a virtual console release!
Cool trailer but until we've seen actual gameplay, I'm taking this with a VERY large grain of salt. We've had close to a decade of teases and trailers with nothing actually coming together. While I truly hope this comes (to all systems including Switch), I'm also very cautious about getting hyped for a new prequel/sequel to a 14 year old cult classic. Let's hope this actually happens.
Also, the language was a bit out of place and definitely felt like they were trying a bit too hard for the "hardcore". I've play the original through once a year since launch and this trailer has a really different tone.
I waited 15 years... for gratuitous f-bombs and cleavage!?!? I mean, why aim for the lowest common denominator with Ancel's passion project? That kind of stuff was absent from the first game. BG&E2, you were supposed to be different.
Really disappointing. Would have bought a Switch for this.
That trailer was a CGI trailer. The actual game will not look that good.
BTW PlayStation UK just tweeted out the game's unveiling. There will not be any Switch exclusitivity, if BGE2 even comes to the Switch at all.
Shared online universe. This isn't the sequel people wanted.
BGE HD edition only released on Xbox and Playstation. So Im afraid that you should not get your hopes up.
@Jayvir far cry 5 didn't get platforms announced either. No chance they coming to switch though.
Hell I not confident steep is coming anymore. Seen nothing of that game
Yup, looking forward to it. They're spending a big budget on this, and that's a good thing. I hope they give the devs the time they need to finish this game.
Now it seems possible to register on the site!
@kobashi100 You can decide. It will be both single player and Online CO-OP.
@Jeronan BGE HD was released on PS3 and 360. Ubisoft couldn't release a HD version on Wii. Wii wasn't HD remember. Game would have looked no better then the GC version
It seems to be early in development.
From the site:
"Through the Space Monkey Program, we are inviting passionate and engaged members of the community to participate in the development of Beyond Good and Evil 2.
Join all the Space Monkeys on the dev team – and around the world – to crash-test, discuss and inspire everything from character design, to cultural influences, to the flight controls on our massive star-faring vessels… We want you by our side at the earliest stages of development and throughout production to take part in the adventure!"
@Jeronan all I saying that shared online universe stuff doesn't fill me with confidence. Just don't think it will be the game people asked for.
And people denied Kate's claims. Lol, she turned out to be right.
Really mixed feelings on this. I'm personally afraid that it will fail to capture the charm of the original, which was dark and edgy while also having a family-friendly, cartoony appeal.
I'm willing to give Ubisoft a chance but my honest overall first impression is that of disappointment. Still, I'm interested to see what comes next.
The trailer was awesome and I'm very excited for the game!
It just feels like it's too big and high tech for the Switch. I hope I'm wrong and the Switch version will be excellent.
@kobashi100 They could have easily released it as a WiiU launch title, but they never bothered.
And 720p is still considered HD. 1080p is called full HD.
But seeing the 18+ rating and foul language. Nintendo doesn't like that too much. Should be a hint too.
That's why we don't see Southpark on the Switch either.
@kobashi100 The difference is that even press releases and fact sheets released say it's a PC, PS4, and Xbox One title. Beyond Good & Evil 2 says nothing of the sort. Don't recall any mention of Steep on the Switch ever.
@Buizel My feelings exacly.
Ubisoft had a great conference!
@Jayvir ubisoft announced steep for switch months ago. For some reason they haven't showed a single screenshot of it since.
If it not announced tomorrow then this game has been cancelled
This game will not make onto switch for the simple reason that it is highly violent and contains crazy amounts of swearing... Sigh
@TreonsRealm When the developers were speaking after the trailer was shown you could see ingame scenes in the background, looked great
@Jeronan The Wii wasn't a HD console, there is no argument to be had. Nintendo didn't even release component cables for the system iirc, they were all 3rd party and they don't make a big difference. An HD remaster on the Wii didn't make sense and the Wii U has a different architecture so it wouldn't be an easy port job so could have easily been seen as a poor investment.
For the record, Michel Ancel appeared on Live at E3. He was asked about the Switch, and he didn't say anything about BG&E2.
Might not mean anything, but it happened.
@samuzamu @Buizel Seconded. It was almost as if they tried to make it edgy by consulting the marketing department's checklist.
What was with the insane amount of swearing?
I watched their show and couldn't help but think this is Ubisoft, how many times have they dazzled people with demos at E3 only to strip everything back for the final product?
Some nice CGI on show though.
@alasdair91 Nintendo published Devils Third, that doesn't matter.
When i hear the description i'm concerned that it's not coming to the Switch given the scope of the game with the online aspects and expansive world but the video trailer doesn't mean anything in regards to that. I didn't see gameplay but even then you need to take that with a grain of salt, they could easily show it running on a high powered PC and not at console quality (Ubisoft has done that in the past). However the lack of platform announcments certainly makes me raise an eyebrow and think that it could easily be so Nintendo, or maybe even Sony, can announce it as an (timed) exclusive. The rumours linked to the Switch exclusivity have all so far come to fruition so I think it certainly could be the case. It's going to be an interesting 24 hours, that's for sure. Who knows maybe BGE2 gameplay and exclusivity announcment is the big treehouse surprise.
BG&E2 being Switch exclusive for a year makes sense, or at least it's a move I'd expect from Ubisoft... Scratch that, I'm actually impressed they haven't decided to delay the Switch version to bring it to other consoles first yet. Guess the backlash from Rayman Legends taught them something.
@buildz did you doubt MARIO Rabbids?
I believe the game is still very early in development, so maybe they can't say which platforms it will be on.
On their site they want input about world design, controls, characters, and claim they want thier fans involved "at the earliest stages of development".
I think we've got quite some time until the wait is over, whichever platform(s) it ends up on.
Something that might be encouraging is that both the new IP and the Rabbids cross over game run on Ubi's own Snowdrop engine.
The same that The Division got built on so there's some hope if BG&E2 is made with this that a version on the switch, albeit with scaled down visuals maybe, could be made with little man power and cost to make it viable
I don't think it is for switch...Looks too ambitious for a switch title. But I like to be a negative Nancy....
Never played the first game, but got it on PC when Ubisoft were offering it for free a while back... will definitely need to play it asap if this is coming to Switch... it looks amazing.
hey how come the trailers are not working "in my country"
It would be great to have this on the Switch (It looks amazing!), but I won't hold my breath.
As someone who played and loved the first one, the coarse language kinda threw me off guard. Anyone else feel the same?
it looks like crap. I actually hope this doesn't come to the switch.
@starman292
I'm afraid they already went there. Gratuitous cleavage, a dozen or so f-bombs... I mean that is lowest common denominator stuff and just lazy script writing. 15 years and all they came up with was boobs and "these mf's better f'in not mess with me. f yeah!"
very disappointed.
Well, so much for charm.
@PlayedNSlayed
agreed. very disappointing. felt nothing like the poetic beauty of the original game. felt more like any other run of the mill ubisoft junk. why would Ancel do this to his passion project? ubisoft thinks swearing sells. just look at the guy that dropped the f-bomb in the conference and then smiled as he waited for applause. why? for being unprofessional? for discovering a bad word his mom doesn't want him to say? i mean come on, BG&E was art. This? this is disappointing.
Lol, I don't give a... shiitake mushroom, about the harsh language. They can do whatever they...sofa king please. All of y'all getting unnerved by the grimey stuff are a bunch of... puss in bootsies.
@PlywoodStick for me it's just that there is already so much of that out there. you don't mind it, I do, whatever. but BG&E was so carefully crafted and this just feels like a lazy marketing ploy. "what do kids like these days? boobs and swears? cool. let's make the sequel have lots of those." people can get that if they want it without putting it into BG&E2.
Even moreso, it just is a really different note from the original game so even people who don't mind that stuff feel like they wanted more of that beauty from the first game and instead it's been replaced. jmho.
Well not trying to hate or anything but if it's online only i don't care anyways...
On the other hand im super excited for Starlink it looked awesome
@speedracer216 Beauty? BG&E wasn't beautiful, it was sublime. A whirlwind of terror, despair, and of course, propaganda! (cue bar song) Every flower is fragile and easily crushed. Jade just happened to be the one that had thorns. The empire stepped on the wrong flower... Which bloomed into a revolution!
Not so keen about the seamless always on line thing. Really put out that everything they showed seems to be this always online junk. Not sure how it fits with switch as a portable machine.
Also, "we would like you to join our space monkey program" is a phrase i was not expecting to hear at a ubisoft show, but in hindsight, should have....
The rumor that this game would be a Switch exclusive has been going on for a year. We can finally say for sure that it will be "excluding Switch". Sorry but the Switch can never EVER deliver graphics like we saw in the trailer. Even if the trailer is only CG.
I really doubt this will be on Switch, period. However, it would be hilarious if it were.
Generally speaking, the trailer was all right, but the overuse of F-bombs was a bit off-putting in my opinion.
I can't believe people are saying a reason for it not to be on a Nintendo console is because of excess swearing. Have they never played House of the dead overkill, that had or did have the record for the most swearing in any video game. The reason i think it wont be on switch is Graphics, A common theme in E3 so far is the big third parties skipping the Switch with most of there big games.
" Laura Kate DaleVerified account @LaurakBuzz 2h2 hours ago
When Ubi ended I was confident of BGE2 Switch timed exclusivity. 3 hours later I'm convinced I'm wrong. Holding my breathe.
"
Really not that hyped about it. I'd rather have no trailer than a cinematic one that may or may not be representative of the final product. Could've saved your money, Ubi, and focus on the production of the actual game!
Also, that monkey's swearing up a storm worse than I have in forever. I like the use of f-bombs in media but this, this is just overkill, mate. Ruins all the impact.
Wow swearing, so mature and edgy. It should definitely sell well now. Especially to thirteen year olds.
I have a feeling this is timed exclusive. Nintendo tweet at the same time this was been reveal to remind us about the spotlight. Ubisoft didn't announce platforms while they did for all other games. This game runs on Snow Drop which is supported by Switch. Nintendo is giving Ubi Mario to use on Rabbids so you would think they ask for something on return.
It's also funny that the proper new monster hunter isn't coming to switch. PS4, xbox and pc
@MrGawain IGN are usually right on the money....
@Menchi187 It's a spin-off, like MH Stories. Switch is getting MHXX and MH 5 will likely arrive too...
I dunno... that game looked TOO GOOD to be running on Switch. I know that moje was cgi but still. Just sayin...
Nice, but the voice acting felt off. I don't mind swearing if it's delivered in the right context, but that seemed excessive for the sake of it and ruined an otherwise good trailer.
@ThomasBW84 A language warning would have been appreciated. My 4-year-old niece was enjoying the "greedy piggy" and "funny monkey" until I had to quickly switch it off. I don't wish to grumble too much but I thought this was a family friendly site. Thanks.
I'll very surprised if the Switch gets a mention with anything Ubisoft showed, other than the mario+rabbids thing obviously. Depends how long ago development started on BG&E2 and how/if it can be optimised for the Switch. Not holding my breath really.Shame as it seems like Switch only gamers will be feeding on scraps again with western third party publishers
Looks way too fancy to be on Switch.
Rated E for everyone?
Awful! The cursing, blood, awful music, this is not the Beyond good and evil I remember. Online playground, so yet again a online multiplayer-centric game. And still no gameplay.....aw come on!!
This looks much better than the first BG&E. Count me in this time (if it's coming to Switch that is).
Feeling a bit mixed about the whole swearing hiphop thing going on, but at least we get to see new stories in the BG&E Universe, finally! This is the best E3 reveal to me, I don't think Nintendo will bring anything better besides the desirable Mario Odyssey gameplay!
