Some days it's worth firing up the Switch eShop to see what's coming soon. Newly added to the European eShop is Drool's Thumper, which is described as being a 'rhythm violence' game. It's coming on 18th May for £15.99 / €19.99 in Europe. U.S. release date and price to be confirmed.
In this classic rhythm-action you play as a space beetle who has to brave the hellish void and confront a maniacal giant head from the future. We actually played this a full 18 months ago when it was being demoed at EGX in the UK, it's intense.
We have to say we like the psychedelic visuals and the Brian Gibson soundtrack of noise-rock band Lightning Bolt. Will this be on your must-buy list when it pops up in a few weeks time?

Looks utterly awful!
What was that?
This game is so addictive! Recently played on a friends PC and held off getting it for PS4, hoping for a Switch version! Happy days!

One of the best games I played on PS4 last year. Found out about it by accident and was intrigued, ended up absolutely loving it. I highly recommend it if you play an instrument (or want to), and/or you like awesome dark hardcore rhythm games.
Gonna be double dipping and supporting this Switch release on launch day. I bet HD rumble will be amazing on it.
@SaKo I guess you need to play it to understand it but that video didn't do it any favours.
@SaKo
Granted it has been given a good scoring, however this video does not do it any justice. Just looks like its a game created to send people into seizures! I can honestly say its not for me.
Wasn't this released on PS4 recently and it was really well received?
Needs to be 60fps.
I've had my eye on this for a while. Hope the visuals match up with other versions because I'd love to have this on the Switch.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE @auty1987
The quality should be forced up on that YouTube video rather than start with low fidelity as the visuals are utterly crushed with compression.
Anyhow, it's a well-regarded game as many have pointed out, and the VR version has gotten attention as well.
Psychedelic rhythm runners I guess aren't for everyone, anyway. lol.
could have used a better video tho
This reviewed well on PS4 but I never got round to it (I bought Rez Infinite). If the Switch version is up to scratch that'll be another buy for me.
A bit too headache inducing for me, it seems. I agree they probably should have gone for a better trailer.
@aaronsullivan Completely agreed on the negative effect of YouTube video compression. But there are better videos out there, that besides looking better, also give a better idea of the games' mechanics.

(WARNING: Review from Jack Septic Eye, Irish YouTuber. Lots of F-Bombs... Still good to get a grip on what this game is all about, though)
But rhythm runners definitely aren't for everyone, like you also said.
Personally, I kinda like the "psychedelic and chrome" visuals. They remind me of Heavy Metal magazine and the covers of eighties and early nineties rock albums.
Loved the demo on PSVR. Headphones and switch on big screen or handheld will be great too I'd say.
I've heard about this game. I think it got pretty good reviews and a lot of people really liked it. Although I don't think this trailer did it much justice.
@Eric258 It certainly doesn't do it any justice indeed. If you're interested and want to get a better impression, you might want to watch those videos I posted in my previous comment.
Never bought the PS4 version so I may get this one instead. Whenever it comes to this side of the pond of course.
Oh wow, that was giving me a headache. Too many colors at once
Heard that this game might be Tumbleseed levels of hard
@Kalmaro Reminds me a bit of Jeff Minter's work...I'd love a new Tempest (or TxK) game for the Switch. For that matter, pretty much anything Jeff would put on the Switch would be worth looking at.
Was a great PSVR near launch title.
@ThanosReXXX Okay thanks. I'll watch it tomorrow tho. I think my brain might explode if I see any more crazy (but awesome) visuals XD
Brilliant game. Played on PS4 but will be tempted by a mobile version.
Not sure about the 'rhythm violence' moniker though. There is a sense of dread that is invoked by the art and music direction but I would not describe it as violent.
It's basically Bit Trip Runner crossed with the visuals of Lawn Mower Man.
@Malcrash No where near tumbleseed difficulty wall. Early stages are pretty lenient unless your going for A or S grades.
Looks decent, though I would prefer a Rez game. Still considering this one.
This game is phenomenal. Almost got the Platinum trophy on PS4. I think I'd be happy to double dip.
This game is really good. I played in VR and it's one of the best games in virtual reality to date.
I'll be buying this for sure, no question
This is still a better trailer than the new one:

It really conveys the feeling of speed, the atmosphere of the game and the feeling of traveling through space.
Or being spaced out...
1080p60 docked, 720p60 in handheld apparently.

It's OK if your on a acid trip
@JibberX
It is. 1080p/60fps docked. 720p/60fps handheld/tabletop.
I really wanna give this a go in my Oculus Rift. But now that I've bought the Rift and a new PC to run the thing, I have no money to actually buy any games like this. All I can try is whatever demos and freebies are out there, which admitedly is actually quite a few.
@auty1987 The reviews say otherwise:
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/thumper
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/thumper
And it's supposed to be even better in actual VR.
@Gaeus yeah seen the PR, there was a worrying choice of phrase
"Handheld mode runs in 720p and 60 frames-per-second
TV mode supports 1080p and 60 frames-per-second"
Handheld "runs" and TV mode "supports" like there is going to be an option between 1080p or 60fps?
We'll find out on the 18th!
@impurekind
I have already acknowledge the game has good reviews. However my personal opinion stands!
I'll get as soon as it comes over here to US
After playing this on PSVR, I am not playing it any other way.
It's a very challenging rhythm game, one of those games that get you into a trance zen-like mindset. On PS4 Pro it runs at 4k resolution and 120fps.
@auty1987 I'm sure it does.
@JibberX Interesting observation. It's a sad thing that we still have to worry about games like this potentially not running at full 1080p and 60fps on Nintendo's newest and most powerful home console ever.
@impurekind well I don't think its entirely fair to blame the hardware, this kind of situation comes about from using middleware, in this case Unreal, and hoping that the vendors of that sharpen up their tools to make it run faster.
There must be a cap on what talented programmers can do with middleware without just making their own engine.
Take a look at something like FAST RMX which is a ground up bespoke engine, and the non-difficulties they have in porting with the resultant res and fps.
@JibberX Possibly, but still . . . I mean, imagine if we were told this game wasn't going to run in 1080p at 60fps on the likes of Xbox One or PS4. People would be outraged, and kinda rightfully so imo; it's not like this is The Witcher 3 or something like that. But, to be clear, I don't blame the developers so much as a blame Nintendo for making a brand new home console in 2017 that struggles to run even this game at 1080p and 60fps in TV mode. If this game struggles to run at 1080p and 60fps on the likes of Xbox One and PS4 too then I'll blame the developer, but right now, assuming there's even a bit of truth in that observation about the specific wording of course, then I lay the responsibility and blame firmly at Nintendo's feet.
@impurekind I'm a 60fps at any res kinda guy.
If the game is a good game, and it's appropriate to run at 60fps and it does, great.
The amount of pixels it runs at is secondary for me, and with all this dynamic res engines happening now, it takes a team of pixel pixies at Digital Foundry to tell us how outraged we should or shouldn't be.
The fact the switch is to the metal, and its less than 3 months old and we are getting a certain level or parity from dedicated lumpy consoles of a completely different architecture is impressive.
Once developers get to understand the hardware and the middleware vendors the same, I'm sure the desire to have 720p on portable and 1080p on TV as standard will happen. Normally these consoles peak tech wise within 2 years.
Should be a fun ride.
@JibberX I'm the same when it comes to resolution vs frame rate; I'll happily go for 720p at 60fps rather than 1080p at 30fps, because I rarely notice much of a difference at the higher resolution anyway, but the improved frame rate is definitely always welcome. But, my point is going beyond just what I like personally, so it's still disappointing to see the system potentially struggling to run a game like Thumper at 1080p and 60fps in docked mode--if the guy's observation turns out to be accurate.
