We've been extensively covering the likes of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap over the past few weeks, and it won't be long now until the game is live on the eShop. The charming platformer will be a reimagining of the Master System classic, featuring an eye catching new hand-drawn art style, while also paying homage to the original. It seems as though it'll be quite the treat and fortunately, it's just been announced that the game is good to go.
Lizard Cube recently posted on Twitter to let fans know that Wonder boy has officially gone gold on all announced platforms, so now the countdown begins until launch on April 18th. We'll be sure to share our thoughts on how it stacks up compared to the original in a review.
What do you think? Will you be picking this up for Switch? Did you play through the original? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I'm really looking forward to this one.. just too many Eshop titles I want yet people will complain still at the lack of games.. 🤔
Day 1. Obviously.
Definitely a day one purchase. I have been eyeing this one for quite a while. I have a backlog of games I want already but this is one I will not put on the back burner.
Day 1 purchase for me to. My brother has this on the GameGear. This will be my first play through so I'll be switching between 8-bit and HD regularly for graphics and soundtrack.
YES! I'm so excited! Launch day purchase for me. Glad it's on the Switch.
I played the original but unless this is 4K 60fps and supports both online and local multiplayer with at least 40 people it's a no go. Oh and I want a guarantee that it won't bend or scratch my switch. And if they think I'm paying more than £3 for this "old" Game they've got another thing coming. On an unrelated note I'm in training to become a troll, how am I doing? P.S. Nintendoomed!
Loved it on master system and think the new art director is fantastic. Downloading the minute it goes live.
I thought it already went gold since the release date's been on the eshop for a few days now.
Haven't played the original but I've been seriously considering getting this on release as it loos really good.
@BigBadJohn 😂😂 made my day with this one. Your right on the money just keep on trolling lol.
@BigBadJohn
You make some fantastic points. Wouldn't pay more than $1.99 for this trash.
Can't believe I've missed all the extensive coverage. This is the first I've heard of this game. It looks great.
Not day 1 but still interested and positive that ill buy it one day. To many day 1 purchases in the last time for me that werent worth their money.
On a serious note, what is the price? £20?
Looking forward to this one. Never played the original and not a big fan of platform games. But I thought, I got to get this one since it's so interesting. So less than two weeks, I am going to have some fun with a new game.
I'm liking that games such as this are getting press and popular interest.
I feel like the era of the dude-bro shooter being the dominant force in gaming are coming to a close. Sure, we'll always have those Call of Duty/Assassin's Creed games for H4RdC0R3 kids who aint' got time for that baby imaginative stuff.
@BigBadJohn - You did well, but you forgot one crucial thing: You have to find a way to make some issue personally Nintendo's fault and sarcastically call them out for it.
@Lord £17.99 buddy!
Yeah 18th can't come soon enough game looks good
@Action51 Sorry my bad. So much much to learn. Nintendos quality control department have obviously taken a vacation since the switch launched. They just keep the conveyor belt of trash rolling out dud after dud. I'm going to trade my Switch in for something useful like an incinerator to put all the crappy Switch games into!
It looks good, I feel it will obtain a 7 in reviews.
Yooka-Laylee has been mistreated by some of the press, I saw a 5.5 and even a 3. That's not fair criticism, such a game can't take less than 6, just can't. Reviewers must understand how a childish game appeal to children before beginning this job.
Can't take off audience in the final vote.
As for Wonderboy I plan eventually to buy it down the road, for my children too. Though Mario Kart is priority for now, and I'm still evaluating Arms.
Down the road we will see.
@BigBadJohn Sorry but you have a way to go until you reach @Yasume levels.
On topic: game looks great. Don't think I'll buy it for awhile though. I have Zelda and FAST to keep me busy. The next eshop game I plan to but is Pocket Rumble. After that we'll see.
It is much too expensive for what it is though. It costs nearly $30 in Australia. That's the same price as a 3DS Selects game at retail. If Nintendo can sell AAA games on a 1GB cartridge for $30, I'm sure other publishers can sell their low budget games at retail at a similar price point (though I'd understand if it needs to be priced a little higher).
You'd think that publishers would want to seize shelf space at this point in the Switch's lifespan (while they still can) considering the barren selection of games that are currently available at retail.
@BigBadJohn
You need to tie the whole thing into Brexit then you are good to go. 😀
But is the game actually good? Or is it just nostalgia-good?
I also read it will come to PC as well, but a bit later. PC version is the one I will go for
Is this eshop only or will it get a physical release?
I wish this came out today instead of so close to Mario Kart
@BigBadJohn that's PRETTY Good... But it'll take something special to top @Yasume's comment about people accepting the Switch's failure in yesterday's article regarding the Weekly Japanese hardware & software charts.
It's a shame it's £2 more on the switch than xbox and playstation in the UK only. The European and US prices are the same. Still, day 1 purchase for me. I own this wonderful game on Master System and twice on Game Gear and I've been eagerly tracking the development of this remake. Seems like a whole lot of love has gone into its creation.
Day 1 purchase for me just not sure what format yet, what I do know is that I'll be spending as much time with the original graphics as the updated ones
Definitely want but on the fence on day 1. Will read some reviews and check the price first.
Am liking most of what I'm seeing though.
"We've been extensively covering the likes of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap"
"the likes of"? No, you've been covering Wonder Boy.
Day 1 on Switch. Purchasing the PS4 and Xbox versions will follow down the road. Classics belong on every console and I buy all the classics made for all of them!!
Now....if only there was going to be a retail version!! Hmmm
@FantasiaWHT not sure about how "extensively" they've covered it either, lol
Yes day 1. Please do ys and phantasy star next.
Also... Final fantasy 1-6 anthology squaresoft on a single cart!
I might be a bit thick but what does 'gone gold' mean?
@JohnG Basically means the game has been approved and has a release date.
Woah! That's kinda short notice, but I'm game!
@RadioShadow @JohnG
Even more specifically, it means that they are not altering content or code anymore. The final release candidate has been compiled, to throw some jargon your way. The game is 100% finished, and the the "gold master" is ready to send to distributors.
@BigBadJohn - What?
You haven't already sold or traded in your Switch to buy [X-system] because of a particular game that wasn't coming or because of some other baffling arbitrary reason?
You're welcome for the suggestion...
@BigBadJohn You also forgot, "Plus, I'm pretty sure Nintendo slept with my wife. So... I'll only buy it if there's free DLC..."
Include that and your journey to the dark side will be complete!
So any word on physical release?
Super excited for this
I will be getting this for the Nintendo Switch! Gotta support as many multi-platform games on that console as possible to encourage more!!! Plus, it's just a super convenient console to play on anywhere!
Looking forward to this one since it was announced. Never played the original but I have good memories of Wonder Boy V. Can't wait to get this one on Switch.
Looks fantastic.
The nostalgic cry pulls me in! Yes to the purchase!
still undecided if I should get it on PS4 or Switch. On PS4 it has a 4 EUR pre-order discount, but I'd rather play it on Switch hmmm
This is a real shame the UK price is £17.99 for Switch owners yet PS4/XB owners can pick it up for £15.99. (£12.79 for PS+ Members). This is no way to encourage sales for a brand new system as it looks like Switch owners are just being ripped off in the UK. Snake Pass - a recent release - is £15.99 across all stores. I cannot think of any reason why the UK price for this digital game should be higher than other digital stores! Somebody being greedy somewhere......
This looks really good. ...Gotta finish Zelda first though. Zelda is the gatekeeper.
Grew up on this game so yes, but I swear this is the last digital title I'm buying!
