We think the Joy-Con controllers are a big weapon for the Nintendo Switch, and could be a pleasant surprise to plenty of people once they're in hand - we even dedicated a feature to making that point recently. Nintendo has also been keen to highlight the various capabilities of the controllers, and their flexibility in helping the Switch be playable anywhere and at any time.
Now the ultimate promotional weapon has been deployed - an infographic. We know you love them, so below is Nintendo UK's effort on this front:
It does a nice job of showcasing the little controllers, also emphasizing that you'd have to play to an unhealthy degree (or forget to use a charger) to run out of battery life.
Let us know whether you think this infographic does a good job of showing off what these controllers can do.

Transformers wants their slogan back!
I suppose the Joy-cons do transform the Switch from a home console into a handheld gaming device.
I'll call my Switch Optimus. It's even the right colours, red and blue..
It's a bit meh! Not terrible, just not particularly attention grabbing
@KiWiiU_Freek You win!!!!*
*There is no prize
Still no VC news?
Wiggle Waggling ice ice cube baby
Hang on, future updates may include video sharing? I thought that was officially confirmed during the conference? Oh well, Nintendo mixing messages again.
Also that two fingered hand, could come across as being rather rude.
It's fine. It gives out information. Though most of us here already know this.
@ThomasBW84
No need for a prize.
I have an info graphic!
This really should've released right after the latest reveal since everyone was looking up info on what the joy-cons can do and their battery capacity.
A 20-hour charge is more than fine for me.
Anytime, anywhere with anyone I can give you joy!
@FragRed they got the two fingers the "Peace" way round
I just heard the switch song on the radio in the netherlands.
Joy-Con Boyz!
They've used the plural both with and without the 's'. Are we supposed to say two Joy-Con or two Joy-Cons?
🎶I got the Joy, Joy, Joy-Con down in my heart! Down in my heart to stay! And I'm so happy! So very happy! I've got the Switch Joy-Con in my heart...!🎶
But, for real, I'm eager to take this Switch for a spin.
I wish I'd ordered the coloured versions instead of grey
it lacks the important info about the triggers, whether they are more than 1 bit resolution. i heard in a podcast somewhere that even the individual joycons have pressure sensitive shoulder buttons. that either means they are activated via pressure, not pressing, or measure just how much pressure is exerted on them for degree of actuation.
@Jamotello They are digital shoulder buttons.
2.5-6.5 hours for Switch console in portable mode, full charge takes 3 hours
20 hours for joy-con controllers, charging takes 3.5 hours
40 hours for pro controller, charging takes 6 hours
Got it? Thanks for not making things confusing Nintendo.
@FragRed During the presentation Nintendo stated that video sharing will come in a future update. It's not Nintendo sending out mixed messages but yourself getting your wires crossed. 😁
@FragRed
Nope. They said in the presentation that it allows screen grabs that can be shared on social sites and that video capturing will be possible in a later update.
@Kiz3000 Pretty sure he's saying that it's mixed messaging because it was announced as a definite eventual feature, but this describes it as something that "may" happen in the future. They're being unclear as to whether it's definitely going to happen, or is just something they're considering.
22 days! woooooot!
Why aren't there black versions???
Nintendo continuing to miss the point; the point that the masses largely are indifferent to all of this stuff. People just want to play games, man. Two sticks, some buttons and they're good to go.
GAMES, Nintendo. GAMES.
Like this one, which isn't coming to Switch either: http://www.polygon.com/2017/2/8/14548208/project-cars-2-trailer-ps4-xbox-one-pc
I was so excited during the Switch presentation, I had thought the IR was on top and the Joy Con were, essentially, the Wiimote and Nunchuk reborn. I had expected Wii games to come to the VC, and I was ready to buy my whole Wii collection over again just so I could play on my sleek new Joy Con. I can't believe it took me this long to notice the IR is on the bottom😭
I understand the shoulder buttons are "in the way" but still. My excitement level just plummeted. Third parties aren't going to waste their time with IR on the bottom, especially when it's only on the right and not on both. What a missed opportunity.
@gatorboi352
So I guess all those sold out pre orders is just made up news?
@gatorboi352 "the point that the masses largely are indifferent to all of this stuff." Actually "the masses" are largely indifferent to video games in general. This hobby of being a gamer is very niche when you look at the percentages of who is a gamer and who isn't.
@gatorboi352 Why would a Switch player play Project Cars when you can have Mario Kart and F-zero clones? Definitely not the right demographic.
@George4518 , yeah, we are a lot (myself included for sure) that have been waiting for theses informations for a long time.
Time to unveil the VC system including transfer process, transfer types, first VC games availables, hopefully Gamecube support news (and why not Sega Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast, at least for a later date)
Speaking of musical references:
"Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night,
it's only right
To think about the Switch you love
and hold it tight
So happy togetheeeer."
March 3rd is not coming fast enough!
Seems like the capture button will be similar to the PS4 share button, I do hope we get video sharing in the future.
It doesn't look comfortable at all removing those 2 left and right controller.......
@Alucard83 Everyone who has used one seems pretty pleased with how they feel. Maybe you'll be surprised.
@Marios-love-child you're in luck amazon just restocked on the colour edition.
@Panopticon yeah, I wish some more thought went into that. I don't see how any games that used the Wiimote as a pointer could migrate over. No sensor bar, just motion sensors. Some games could be overhauled and remastered for dual-stick control, but I'm not expecting a lot of that.
That really is a lot of function specific hardware and batteries included at $300.
@BlueKnight07 I was thinking the Switch itself would be the sensor bar, similar to how the Wii U Gamepad had one. And when the Switch is docked the top pokes out which is where it could have been.
@BigWhoady something tells me if the Joy Cons didn't have all this added tech in them, the people interested in a Switch would still be interested in a Switch. Oh, and enjoying the lower cost of the hardware as well.
Let's see how many games actually employ any of this tech in the first place, shall we?
@FragRed ya on the announcement they said that the share button will do both picture and vid sharing. but the vid sharing wont come till later.
@Kosmo "Why would a Switch player play Project Cars when you can have Mario Kart and F-zero clones?"
LOL you know, amazingly, there are plenty of folks around this site that truly believe this sentiment. That's the scary part.
@dparmar005
Trouble is I've ordered via Shop to because I was able to pay it on Finance rather than having to Shell out £279 all in one hit
I could have probably got the coloured version from Smyths but would have had to pay in full rather than over 24 months
Nintendo picked the wrong robot, Switch isn't a Transformer, though the portable-home transformation is a big part of it, but it's really more like Voltron. you don't call each little robot Voltron, only the combined might of the 5 robots gives you the power that is Voltron. Though I suppose for a Joycon infographic this isn't bad, but if they do a "Switch" infographic they need Voltron.
Black lion is the tablet, red and green lion's are the Joycon, blue lion is the dock, yellow lion is the Grip.
"They can release a console in two months without even showing the concept" They said "Nintendo needs a least 6 month to show the concept, other wise it will fail" They said.
@KiWiiU_Freek For what it's worth, Nvidia does have a GPU switching solution for laptops they call Optimus.
@rjejr Tyrannosaurus!
Gotta love these Ninfographics!
@imgrowinglegs oh ok. i really hope so
I'm reluctant to buy any additional Joy-Cons as they're A) too expensive and B) Nintendo are likely to release (Mario) themed Joy-Con sooner or later, and I don't want Lady Wallet in hysterics when that inevitably happens (and what if they release themed grips as well?!).
So the IR sensor can identify rock, paper, scissors. Big deal. Can it tell lizard and Spock?
Joy-cons really are awfully designed. After 3DS/Vita I swore id NEVER buy another console WITHOUT a full suite of industry standard (for almost 20 years!!) buttons!! 3DS lacked a 2nd analogue (SERIOUSLY!!!???) and Vita's lack of L2/R2 has completely ruined PS4 remote play! Really dont fancy playing Fifa/FPS games in Switch's desktop mode with 1 analogue and no L2/R2! You'll need 2 Joy-con circle pad pros for a decent desktop mode experience!! Wish they'd just ditched the 3D Rumble/distance sensor gimmicky crap and gave us 2 decent, traditional Joy-con controllers!
You know...we have less than a month to go, and ive yet to see a JoyCon infographic saying if:
-Sticks are clickable
-Shoulder buttons are analog / pressure sensitive
The latter will make their plans of releasing GC VC titles rather...interesting....
Many 1st party titles will not function properly without analog shoulder buttons.
Also, im still baffled no one over at Nintendo thought about releasing an extra JoyCon with a proper D-Pad. The button solution, again, will make playing VC titles tricky.
Speaking of which: Didn't Reggie say something about news regarding people who loaded up their Wii / WiiU with VC titles ?
Again, less than a full month to go and still nothing.
@Einherjar
Less than a month and we don't even know if Virtual Console will be up and running at launch, let alone what games, how much etc.
@electrolite77 It wasn't on 3DS, it wasn't on WiiU so im kinda taking it for granted that it will take a month or two on Switch....sigh
But i'd really like to know if they try to charge people AGAIN for the same stuff.
THAT would be a major d*ck move...
It's funny that some people don't seem to understand the concept of an infographic and act like their "analysis" of them is worthwhile. Infographics provide product information to people who don't know about a good or service. TBH, like the many "X game not coming to Switch" (which you never post about 3DS, btw), this is probably not relevant to us. Luckily, I'm saving most of my clicks for other sites that don't post as much troll bait and for non-troll bait articles.
No, this article isn't troll bait, but it's attracted its share of users that post things which are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. And no, it's not all good news for Nintendo (to think so about anything is ridiculous), but to rationalize posting a game is not coming to one system when you don't do it for the other by saying you're giving all Nintendo-related news doesn't mean you're right for posting something negative for the sake of complaining.
@gatorboi352
That's a waste of time. I don't get paid to analyze current video game trends. Instead I buy the console that has all my favorite games coming out for it and then I go home and play them. That's really all there is to it. Like I've said before, playing video games is a hobby, nothing more. One that costs me money, not makes me money.
@BigWhoady you do realize that Nintendo once had ALL the games on its console, right? Like, they've regressed, generation after generation ever since the N64 era.
Once upon a time you could go to the store, buy 1 console, and have all the games you'd ever wish to play on it. And it was Nintendo's console.
Good job! The other "problem" I have with the Joy-Con is the ZL/ZR triggers are NOT analog.
i neant the only problem.
@gatorboi352 "Once upon a time you could go to the store, buy 1 console, and have all the games you'd ever wish to play on it. And it was Nintendo's console."
That's interesting cause right now I can go the store, buy 1 console, and have all the games I every wish to play on it. And it's a nintendo console. Go figure.
@Einherjar
There was another article on here recently with a video tour of the Switch. It said the analogue sticks on the joy cons were clickable.
"Once upon a time you could go to the store, buy 1 console, and have all the games you'd ever wish to play on it."
Are you from a parallel dimension or something? I grew up in the 80's and have been playing everything I could get my hands on; I had the NES, but it didn't have Sonic or Bonk, or Keith Courage, or Altered Beast, or Monster Boy, etc. Then I had the Atari 7800 and a 2600 as well back then, but I couldn't play Super Mario Bros. I got a PS3 with a ton of games, but nothing much I really liked, so I got a Wii as well. Unless you're completely ignorant of the whole gaming scene, you can't ever be satisfied, as there's always going to be some shiny new thing for another console.
It shows the basics in a simple way.
I guess that was the point of this infographic.
Why are people so eager to fight on comments' section?
Before is before, now is now. I have my fair share of Nintendo Nostalgia from back then, but the gaming scene has changed since (evolved/devolved, suit yourself).
There will always be exclusives. Nintendo may be missing some of the possible games for whatever reason, but sometimes I see whiny Sony/MS fans complaining they can't get Mario/Zelda/Smash on their shiny powerful HD consoles.
@PLATINUM7 That's one less worry at least.
Still baffled by the shoulder buttons though. Think of it what you want, but the Steam controller demonstrated, that you can indeed have analog shoulder buttons without much travel distance. Heck, they even have a click, which would be perfect for GC VC games.
I have no idea how Nintendo plans to work around that, other than mapping different travel distances all over the controller...
@BigWhoady good for you. You're a part of the minority.
@gatorboi352
That's one way of looking at it. Another is I simply don't let society dictate what I should and shouldn't like. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's for everybody. You'd do well to heed those words.
@Einherjar
I'm starting to worry you're right on both counts. My pre-order may hang on them.
@BigWhoady i'm just stating facts. the number of ppl that find solace in Nintendo only gaming has plummeted off a cliff the last 10 years. you're one of the few still holding out on non-nintendo consoles. good for you.
@dereq
I'm sure you don't speak for everybody
@electrolite77 Which is why i haven't pre-ordered the thing, but merely reserved a unit for a day at out local electronics market.
With the current knowledge, it looks eerily similar to the 3DS launch. If you don't count BotW (which i, and many others, could play without spending an extra 300+ bucks), there are no noteworthy games. And like the 3DS, there is no pack-in.
On top of that, we have no idea about the state of the VC. Heck, i could be held over by my VC library alone. I'd probably be fanboying about the novelty of "look, now its a handheld, now its a console" until MK8DX releases.
But at the moment, we don't even have that.
A quick notice of "You can transfer all of your licenses for free (heck, i would even be fine with a small, one time fee...), systems X are compatible from the get go, systems Y will be compatible later. To test the GC waters, game Z will be available on launch day" and the incentive to get the bloody thing would be several times bigger.
As much as the actual reveal trailer and game show real rekindled my interest, the following radio silence (AGAIN !) got rid of it pretty quickly.
So yeah, 3 weeks to go, and my launch day purchase really depends on a last minute announcement.
can the joycons measure my penis?
@gatorboi352 "you're one of the few still holding out on non-nintendo consoles. good for you."
Nice assumption, but wrong again. I have plenty of access to non-nintendo consoles and I've played quite a few games on them. My brother has an xbone, and my cousins have both a ps3 and ps4 so I'm not just refusing to believe other consoles exist. I've played the games and they just don't do anything for me. But I guess I should be like you and just follow the crowd, right? You know, the whole "everybody else is doing it" mentality?
