It's been clear over recent days that Pokémon Sun and Moon have been a significant success, shifting millions of copies and even setting a Nintendo record in the UK. Nintendo of Europe has now confirmed that it's the biggest ever Nintendo game launch in the region.
NoE has said the following in a press release:
Pokémon fans and newcomers alike have been adventuring in the wonderful world of Alola in record numbers, with first week sales of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon totalling over 1.5 million units. That figure includes more than 368,000 units sold in the UK in the first week.
Those are big numbers, and it'll be interesting to see how that momentum continues. The competitive scene could also take the chance to grow further, too - Nintendo is actively promoting The Pokémon European International Championships, which takes place at ExCeL London in London, England, from December 9–11, 2016. It's another impressive landmark for Sun and Moon; it seems the new generation has started off on the right foot.

Is Europe the 'smallest' market for Pokémon? I guess the numbers are even bigger in the US and Japan.

this is incredible. in a month the game will probably have sold 5 million worldwide!
I'm happy of the success. I'm just concerned that this would be The Pokemon Company's justification for late Pokemon game releases!
It's mad that Japan alone in its first week sold more copies than all of Europe combined.

@westman98 Huge yes, but not by what gets people talking out here for brands. It's a FIFA and CoD dominated country, and I'm at least happy there's been some market break in Pokémon, even more so it's Nintendo.
Let's see - announce a game early in the year, say Feb or March, announce a release date right before the holidays later in the year, promote the game all year long, put out a demo even, actually release the game when you said you are going to, and the game sells well, and yet people are surprised.
It's called - do the opposite of what Nitneod normally does, get the opposite results. I know Ninteod had a hand in this, but considering how much they suck at marketing everything else, I'll go out on a limb and say Gamefreak and TPC are mostly responsible for the year long blitzkrieg of this games marketing.
If Nintendo was entirely responsible for this game they would have only shipped 27,000 copies to all of Europe.

I should point out on tuesday when it launched I was running the midnight launch for Basingstoke. We had at least 20-30 people come in.
On a Tuesday night. Late. In the evening. When our public transport is terrible.
That enough should state how much of a big deal this news is. Basingstoke is now looking to have a Switch frontline launch with me and my group at the frontlines running the show
The fact it's beaten anything Nintendo released during their peak and the DS/Wii years is pretty amazing really.Pokemon Go has probably played a big part in that.Super Mario Run may well do the same for Mario Switch and possibly the Mario Maker port,especially if they get the Android version out in time for the Switch release.
Good to see the UK remembered Nintendo exists.
Hopefully these people start buying other 3DS games too to help sales over there.

Pokemon on Switch + Gorgeous HD rendering + Full Dynamic camera angle (Not fixed camera angle) + More than 700 Pokemons + Very huge Open World + Mini games + More complex character custom (Like The Sims 3) + All Pokemon abilities (No more forgeting some abilities) + Own house with furniture customization and arrangement (Like The Sims 3 and ACNL) + Customable User Interface (Pattern, Shape, Color, Theme, etc) + More usable things (Can interact with certain objects) + Boxing Gym (Return of the Gym) + Pokken fighting style = BLAST !!!
This bodes really well for the Switch if the rumors are true that it will get a mainline Pokémon game.
The games are are a breath of fresh air. They made needed changes to the formula instead of letting it grow stale. It's great to see this reflected in the sales figures.
@Anti-Matter Well someone's going to be disappointed, especially with the Pokken fighting style idea. That's never happen in a main-series game.
The US is breaking records too for Sun/Moon. Look Nintendo and take note, this is what happens when a mobile game is released and goes insanely popular. No way in hell would Sun/Moon have been this successful if it wasn't for Pokemon GO.
I'm pretty sure they don't mean biggest Nintendo launch over all when they say "record numbers", but perhaps biggest Pokémon-launch over all or biggest Pokémon-launch since RBY, or why not biggest Nintendo 3DS-game launch overall? Surely games like Wii Sports and Super Mario World had a better launch than selling less than 1.5 million copies the first week.
