Nintendo X NVIDIA.jpg

One of ongoing debates prior to the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch was the company that would ultimately supply the GPU; reports pointing to NVIDIA were countered with suggestions AMD would get the nod, especially as the latter has had a lockdown on consoles for a decent period of time. With the Switch, ultimately, Nintendo has opted for a bespoke variation of NVIDIA's Tegra technology, which is currently at the centre of reports around the system's capabilities.

In any case, those surprised by NVIDIA securing the contract are likely focused on home consoles, but the company's been enjoying dramatic growth in recent times. This is laid bare in the graph below, and it's this extraordinary growth that's led to the company being named the Yahoo Finance Company of the Year.

Yahoo's article is an interesting read, and it's quite interesting to note that the Switch is a small enough part of NVIDIA's broader business; it doesn't even get a specific mention in that article. NVIDIA is at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, for example, driving the technology behind services from Google, Amazon and Netflix among others. It's made major strides in computing and technology in cars, all the while continuing to increase its revenues from the high-end PC gaming space. Nintendo and the Switch agreement are, of course, contributors to the company's ongoing gaming revenues.

It'll be interesting to see how the NVIDIA and Nintendo relationship progresses; in early November company President and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang described the Switch as an "incredible game console", also sharing his belief that it's a "relationship that will likely last two decades".

We're getting close to the Switch making its mark, in any case - 2017 could be a hugely exciting year.

With thanks to @bobmrik for the heads up.
