Following the announcement of the third and final Sega 3D Classics package in Japan, Sega has been drip-feeding details of the new games included in the collection. First up was Turbo OutRun, quickly followed by the sublime 16-bit shooter Thunder Force III. At the start of this week it was confirmed that Japanese magazine Famitsu would reveal the last two titles on Thursday, but the information has appeared online early.
The final two games in Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 3: Final Stage are Columns and Alien Syndrome. The former was positioned as Sega's answer to Tetris, and saw release on the Mega Drive / Genesis, Master System and Game Gear, as well as receiving an arcade release and numerous sequels over the years.
Alien Syndrome began life as a 1987 coin-op before being ported to several different consoles, including the Master System and NES. In 2007 a sequel was released on the Wii and PSP.
Here's the complete list of games featured in the package:
New
- Turbo Outrun
- Thunder Force III
- Alien Syndrome
- Columns
Previously released on eShop
The game hits Japanese retail on December 22nd. There's no word on a western release at present, but given that we've just had Sega 3D Classics Collection, there's a good chance it could make the jump.

I find it so jarring that there is no Sonic 3 or Streets of Rage 3 within the classic collection. Plus, is Alien Syndrome really first party to Sega?
Alien Syndrome is cool but I was hoping so much for AB Cop
@AlphaJaguar Yep, it was a first party Sega game. The 2007 version was coded by someone else and published by Sega, but the original was first-party.
Nice. I find the music in Columns to be really nostalgic. Are these games going to be available seperately or only as part of the collection?
Still very disappointed that there's no Sonic 3 & Knuckles... or Golden Axe.
Damn. Columns, seriously? Does it really need 3D? I'd have preferred Streets of Rage 3.
Still no love for Golden Axe.
Certainly an interesting mix of games.
Thunderforce IV would have been awesome.
Definitely getting this from PlayAsia soon as it's out.
Shame there was no Golden Axe or The Super Shinobi, or Streets of Rage 3 with the Bare Knuckle 3 version, or...
But hey, Clotho on the go with Columns.
I hope they'll continue making individual 3D Genesis games, and maybe sell the collection-exclusive games separately some time in the future.
hm didn't they say that the fans chose one of the games? how can that not be sonic 3?
I am really disappointed in Sega for not giving Shining Force I & II the 3d treatment as they would have taken advantage of the 3d effect in battle. Those would have been the only 3d Sega classic games I would have bought.
This just gets better and better
Sonic The Hedgehog CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles will be SEGA's swan song on 3DS.
Calling it now. They're saving the best for last, with "last" as in "their final 3DS game".
(Bonus points for the possibility of getting Christian Whitehead back on board, once Sonic Mania will be complete.)
How the NES got a more faithful port of Alien Syndrome (as in, it actually resembled the arcade game) than Sega's own console is surprising (even more shocking when supposedly the same developer worked on both ports).
This is a great pack of games, but for Fukkoku Archives 4: The Resurrection I'll take...
Bare Knuckle III
Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Golden Axe
Thunder Force IV
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Personally, I'm a bit disappointed not to have
Golden Axe and Bare Knuckle 3. That said, I think this whole 3D Classics experiment shows that people want the games, and I think Sega should keep making them available on future consoles/handhelds, 3D or no 3D.
Uhh, Columns and Alien Syndrome? Why would they leave these for the last? Just to troll people?
is Alien Sydrome going to be the actual classic arcade version of one of the ports like altered beast got which was horrible btw? man I'm sooooooo excited that one of them is ASyndrome!! The game is balls to the wall hard!! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!
Columns...****ing Columns, out of anything else they could possibly do? That's very much a huge letdown...
@KingMike NintenDoes what Master System don't!
Not the games I would have in mind for a (supposedly final) games bundle....
Wow... can't wait to play a completely 2D puzzle game in 3D.
So long, 3D Gain Ground and 3D ESWAT. 'Twas nice dreamin' of ye. Everything else is wonderful, though, especially that wistful Columns Lathesis (though Columns III, while not as iconic, might have been a better choice in terms of gameplay).
@KingMike The NES version came out later, so I think that Sega was generally still cutting their teeth on home ports in '86-'87, at least (cf. MS' mapless Fantasy Zones).
Really weird that Golden Axe or Sonic 3 didn't get to be selected by M2 to work on.
Golden Axe especially is a crime that it wasn't selected. It is one of the best arcade games of it's era. Excellent music and wonderful graphics.
Not really sure how 3D would improve Columns but hey, I'll take it... if it ever leaves Japan, that is.
Columns is a fantastic game, but I'm not sure how you would do it in 3D. I pray for a release in the US for Turbo Outrun alone, physical, digital, who cares.
I hope Streets of Rage 3 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles come at some point, and especially the uncensored Bare Knuckle 3.
I was hoping so much we would get Shining in the Darkness 3d. Would look so awesome
Holy crap, I think the woman's breastplate actually looks pretty decent here... just as much or more armor than the guy. Interesting how classic Sega games had a habit of being equal opportunity in that regard, Golden Axe included...
But yeah, I echo the sentiment of being sad for no 3D Shining Force I & II.
Ahhh jeez... I already own Sonic 2 and Gunstar Heroes, but this is SUPER tempting for both of those games. Also the others I don't own. But having to re-buy games I already bought seems kind of lame.
