Though SEGA's success in the console industry was relatively rocky after its 16-bit days, the Genesis was certainly nothing to be sniffed at in its heyday. The console played host to dozens of classic titles, many of which have received excellent 3D remakes on the 3DS over the past few years.
For those of you that missed some of these remakes, now's an excellent time to see what the fuss is about, as Sega is currently putting on a 3D Classics sale on the North American 3DS eShop. All the discounted games are available for $3, which is half of what they usually go for; the lineup is as follows:

- 3D Out Run
- 3D Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
- 3D Space Harrier
- 3D Streets of Rage

When does it start?
M2 is the best but i already have all their games that i want. a price drop wont sway me on the few i didnt pick up already.
I already have Shinobi 3, Gunstar heroes and Streets of Rage 2, but I still need Super Hang on and After Burner 2.
Need more 3D sega classics (castlevania bloodlines comes to mind) I still say Nintendo should do something along the same lines for SNES so I can play them on 3ds.
3D Altered Beast is absent from the list... likely because they know people will still pay full price for the greatest game in history #POWERUP
@Mode7 hah. got that right! i hear M2 is hard at work on a 3d remake of ET that should come out any day now.
@Mode7 actually it's on the 3D classics collection. All of those games have been omitted from this sale.
I could go ahead and get the first SOR game and Space Harrier. I already pick up the rest of those games a while back on this list. Not Ecco the Dolphin though, I never really got into that series.
@faint Makes sense... I already owned the two games from that collection that I was interested in when it came out (Altered Beast and Galaxy Force II), so I kind of ignored it.
I'm considering Out Run with this sale, although I do already have Super Hang On...

Don't get Streets of Rage 2 on 3ds. The PC version single-handedly rendered any other version obsolete.

@Rocossa You could say the same thing about the mobile version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by Christian Whitehead, but the 3DS version still has its merits.

already got them all from sales, that means only one thing....I need to get around to playing them!

Now THAT is frikin' brilliant pricing for these often great games and doubly brilliant 3D Classics versions of them. And even the standard $6 that they go for normally craps in the face of Nintendo's bloated pricing for its own Virtual Console titles that, in terms of the effort put into the versions, totally and utterly pale in comparison to Sega's efforts here.
If I had the means, I'd lap these titles up at that price.
Out Run is my third most played 3DS game. Buy it!
Why haven't they put the Golden Axe series on eShop? Or the three Columns games that were on Genesis?
@Kirk one of the Best comments ive read in a while and i always see your comments your CLEARLY not a fanboy like most are which like me is the only way to be and have perspective i AGREE 1000% with your comment and also will add Nintendo are LAZY,GREEDY and disrespectful towards there VC & FANBASE overall what a joke most of there shoddy emulators are they put out now i mean just look at how poor the N64 is every game has a noticeable dark tint over the screen its now famous in the gaming community how bad it is shocking and if thats the love they show their catalogue you best believe thats the level of love they'll show their Fanbase.

I've already gotten all of these. I was actually hoping the collection would go on sale so I could get the couple exclusives in that.
But for anyone who doesn't have these games... GET THEM! These are still my go-to games when I'm demonstrating the 3DS' stereoscopic capabilities.
Oh and they're hella fun, too.
Finally getting Gunstar Heroes... I have already bought Shinobi and Outrun (and Sonic 1 & 2).
Wish they go forward with Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles (and ability to combine them and Sonic 2!)

If you break it down, the Sega 3D Classics Collection cost about $3 a game so it makes sense to run a sale that prices the games left off of the cart down to $3 too.
My son already has Streets of Rage 2 but I may pick it up so I can play too. I wouldn't mind getting Shinobi, Outrun, or Ecco.
I have Gunstars on VC already so I don't think I need that again.
Already have Streets of Rage 1 and 2, Super Hang-On and Out Run. Maybe I'll get Shinobi and Space Harrier next.

A total steal getting g these at 2.99 I only needed one more which was Echo the Dolphin. I have actuLly never played It. Sega Rules the Classic 3d games!

Outrun 3D is a must have.
Just bought Gunstar Heroes and Space Harrier. These are my first Sega 3D classics and I must say M2 did an amazing job. Nintendo should be ashamed to be outdone on their own hardware when it comes to retro games. Contra 3, super metroid, Axelay even super ghouls and ghosts would've been great if given the same treatment.
M2 and Sega have given a second life to some great games. Now do Ranger X and thunder force 4/Lightening force!(I know not Sega but still)
All this criticism about Nintendo's treatment of their retro games. We don't really know what's going on behind Nintendo's closed doors. They probably have all hands on deck working on Breath of the Wild and other NX projects. Having a department retcon and improve their retro games is not a priority for them nor should it be. Sega on the other hand, they don't seem to be having much going on there for the last little while. Once a major videogame superpower, the company has really fallen on hard times, releasing middling Sonic games, more-of-the-same Yakuza games and unpopular new IPs such as Rodea. I can't think of any runaway hits from Sega in a long time. I'm sure one of its core strategies is to improve and re-release past hits... no innovation, just trying to milk their past glories.
