When we reviewed LEGO Dimensions last year we enjoyed various aspects of it, with the NFC technology used in clever ways and some stand-out levels winning our favour. However, it's also a game - or 'platform' - that's particularly aggressive in its upselling, locking a lot of extra content and even areas within the core campaign behind diverse ranges of toys and packs that can be purchased separately. Just likes its rivals in the toys-to-life space it's very keen to get top dollar out of players.

Not all of the figures and level packs seem like particularly good value, but perhaps the Midway Level Pack is a stronger offering. Along with the usual unlockable character, vehicle and dedicated level content, there's also an area where you can access and play a whole load of retro arcade games, including some memorable examples. A press release excerpt is below.

The Midway Arcade Level Pack comes with a buildable Gamer Kid minifigure and G-6155 Spy Hunter vehicle and Arcade Machine – all playable in the game, and unlocks more than 20 classic arcade games from Midway Arcade as an exclusive level. These classic games include Seven Twenty, Badlands, Blasteroids, Championship Sprint, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, KLAX, Joust, Joust 2, Marble Madness, Paperboy, Rampage, Road Blasters, Robron, Spyhunter, SuperSprint, Timber, Toobin, Cyberball, Vindicators and Xybots.

Considering the fact you can find the pack at a decent price online (under $20 if you shop around) it may be one of the better value add-ons out there. The core campaign hit a high point in a stage dedicated to retro gaming, so it seems to be an area close to the hearts of the development team.

If buying all of the extras is your thing, meanwhile, the DC Comics Superman and DC Comics Aquaman and Ghostbusters Stay Puft Fun Packs are also out now.
