Fighting game crossover Pokkén Tournament is officially becoming part of the Pokémon Championship Series, it has been confirmed today.

The Wii U brawler will be added to the roster for the 2016 event, with the crowning of the Pokkén Tournament World Champions taking place at the Pokémon World Championships in August.

Early Access Competitions being coming to select GameStop locations throughout the United States on Saturday, February 27th. Regional winners will then progress to the finals being held at the Nintendo store in New York on March 17th, with the final two winners gaining access to 2016 Pokémon US National Championships - held from July 1th to 3rd in Ohio - to battle for the chance to appear at the 2016 Pokémon World Championships.

If you're interested, then make sure you're at one of the following GameStop stores on February 27th from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time. Registration will begin at each regional location starting at 10 a.m. local time.

The Early Access Competitions will be split into two age brackets: players born in 2001 or later and players born in 2000 or earlier. The winner of each age bracket will be given detailed training by a professional fighting game player, and the winner from each city and age bracket will be flown to the Nintendo NY store (along with a guest) on March 17th for the Early Access finals.

The winners of these finals will each bag a Wii U system, copy of Pokkén Tournament and a travel to the 2016 Pokémon US National Championships in Ohio. Success there will assure them a place at 2016 Pokémon World Championships.
