Nintendo's latest quarterly financial reports are due early next week (at the time of writing), so there's anticipation to see what information Nintendo will share in order to appease its shareholders. As fans already know, 2016 is a big year for the company, and anticipation is building for more details on smart device games and, of course, the NX platform.
There are a lot of rumours pinging around, meaning we have to tread carefully, but a typically reliable source has now made some interesting claims. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based consultancy company Kantan Games, has often provided plenty of interesting data and analysis of the Japanese market; now he's revealed NX details for which he's very happy to back his source.
In short, he's stated the belief that a Super Smash Bros. title is planned to launch with NX, and that Bandai Namco is working on 'several' NX projects.
To be clear, Dr. Serkan Toto isn't your average poster on a forum with an 'uncle that works at Nintendo', but a serious and likely relevant source. He's also stated he doesn't know whether Smash Bros. will be a new numbered entry, a port, or something else entirely.
Breaking this down a little, we suspect any Smash Bros. release on NX would be a 'complete edition', as opposed to a new game; that's only an opinion, of course. It would make sense for an enhanced version of the current-gen title with all DLC to be an early enticement to those eyeing up the NX hardware. As for Bandai Namco, it assisted heavily in the development of the Wii U and 3DS entries and has emerged as a strong partner for Nintendo in recent years.
So, what do you think of this rumour, and would you be happy if it proves to be accurate? Let us know.

All I want is good games. This rumor... is palpable at least. Roll on, e3.
Pfft. With how Sakarai whines and goes on like he's about to die with every game he takes on, I seriously doubt Smash Bros will come within the first three years of the console's lifespan.
Seems a little too soon for the next Smash Bros? They're still DLCing the current, plus it would have had to have been in development for years before now. I'm highly doubtful they were working on another Smash game alongside the two they already had on Wii U/3DS. Unless it's just going to be a port of this current game of some kind, in which case that's quite disappointing.
And, as long as Bandai Namco are working on a Tales title for any Nintendo system, I'm all in. Been far too long since we had one.
I'd like to imagine this NX Smash Bros will be the Wii U version combined with elements of the 3DS version, with all the DLC included. That way Sakurai and Nintendo can take a break from Smash for another few years.
namco making games sounds normal and to be expected to me,a new smash sounds a lttle weird to me,its to early,if nx is coming in 16 anyway
if true, this would get me to be an early adopter of the NX.
I don't think it'll be a new game it'll be the Wii U version it's only been out for about a year anyway! It'll be enhanced with the dlc otherwise people won't think it's worth the purchase, however, I think it'll have extra features such as a story mode but that's just my guess anyway and with me Bandai Namco is a given! They're making pokken tournament for Wii U despite the fact it is almost at the end if it's life! I know it's an arcade port but we all know porting isn't easy on the Wii U !
Well duh. There will be a lot of 'ports' and 'remakes' in the first year of NX. Handheld and home console.
Melee HD confirmed
As others have said, it will likely be a port of the WiiU version. And furthermore, it will probably be the best way to promote the NX's online capabilities. Expect them to do the same with Mario Kart and Splatoon, and likely the new Zelda.
There's absolutely no reason for a new smash bros. The latest version is perfect. I could definitely see a definitive edition coming out though. All they could really do is add more stages character and features.
So Super Smash Bros for NX?!?!
If they've any sense they're looking at what worked for the ps4 and Xbox One in the first 12-18 months and looking to mirror that, as that was the period which hurt the Wii U the most. The trick was a simple one; flesh out the release schedule with remakes/complete editions of decent titles, until you've got a steady wave of next gen titles. People say they hated it, but quite simply it worked.
Games at launch? That's a bold strategy.
All I need is the Wii U version, some 3DS stages and the Ice Climbers to call this good. I can't imagine it being a lazy port, so hopefully it's good!
A complete Smash port with DLC included is a great quick NX launch title.
I like that this rumor comes from someone who has a track record of being legit. If true, I think any presence of Smash Bros, whether it be a Wii U upgraded port or a new game, would be extremely welcome as a launch title.
A smash bros NX sounds like a remaster instead of a new game. It's too soon.
Gamers on many sites are already unhappy with this rumor because they don't want the console to become a haven for ports and remasters.
Many are saying this rumor, shows that Nintendo won't launch the NX with any original titles.
Even the Nexus of Hardcore Gaming is riled up over this rumor.
I suspect it will be smash with all DLC included. There's no way they would port it without it. There would be no reason for old adopters to buy it up. Glad I haven't bought any DLC though if this is true. I'm REALLY hoping for Pikmin 4 to be a launch title.
An enhanced port of the Wii U version is most likely. Add in Smash Run, all DLC (characters, stages and costumes), the Ice Climbers, a few brand new stages, local tourney mode, and enhanced online features like voice chat during battles.
After the last ~last~ Smash related video I have the theory that they will continue supporting Wii U/3DS version with new DLC on NX... Yet, that's just my theory.
(2019: I was right)
Almost certainly a port, but a port of which version, Wii U or 3DS or a new combination of both?
While a complete edition with all DLC included makes sense I find it very hard to believe Nintendo would give away $60 of DLC with a $60 game. It might even be closer to $100 worth of DLC with Cloud and Bayonetta.
One good thing, whether NX is portable w/TV out or a home console w/ a portable Game pad or 2 systems, 1 for home and one portable, they should all play the same game and we should only have to pay for DLC once at one price.
Fun. Fun. Fun.
Maybe they can call it Nintendo Unlimited Fun, it's good NUF for all your gaming neends. And it's fun spelled backwards. You can't spell fun without NUF. It would be like bad 80s marketing all over again.
I could honestly see something like a "Game of the Year" Edition happening. Take Smash WiiU as a basis, put some fan-favorite 3DS stages in, maybe throw in some more fan-requested stages (cough Saffron City cough) alongside all of the DLC thus far and you'd have a pretty sweet deal, I'd say.
That'd be so boring. Another Smash game so soon, there'd be no reason for me to delve into it so fast. If their plan is for Smash NX then their plan is obviously to keep up with XB1 & PS4 where all they do is remake the same game and have 200 ports from 2 gens ago. Cool we caught up.
@Yorumi
That's both Nintendo's fault and the buying public's fault.
They kept screwing Metroid, F-Zero, Starfox, and the like, that only their biggest franchises were worth buying.
Flipside, the buying public chose to go with simpler, lower-cost games.
Flopside, Nintendo didn't simplify their games while making solid stories, promote their brands well, and adapt to mobile. MK9 has got to cut features, because MK8 was overly complicated. And Smash is trying too hard to be competitive AND fun, mutually exclusive things.
Unless Sakurai has written his own cheque, found a cure for carpal tunnel and increased his work output by 200 per cent, this is not going to be a new entry in the series. More likely it's a port of the Wii U version with all DLC included, similar to how publishers treated 'remasters' Xbone/PS4 from previous generations.
Meh. Not interested in a Smash 4 port unless it has substantial add-ons.
@grumblebuzzz Not really. Sakurai put his health at risk for smash 4, he had an injured hand for a good amount of time so it's pretty disrespectful to say that he was whining. You go work on the biggest crossover franchise where you can never please anyone and then say he's whining.
@GoldenGamer88 I could also see them adding in characters that wouldn't work across Wii U and 3DS that people wanted back, like the Ice Climbers and such, to further justify repackaging it again and get even those with all DLC on Wii U and 3DS back on board for a newer version.
It would make sense to put an enhanced complete edition as pre-installed software. Low development costs, a big name for those who skipped the Wii U and no doubt lots of juicy new extras for the faithful
I think it's most likely not going to be a new entry (if it is that'd be a poor decision), but something more along the lines of a collector's edition (containing all four Smash games in one set), or Smash 4 with all DLC unlocked with the inclusion of the 3DS version's exclusive levels and features.
Just so long as we get one great, new launch title designed for the NX hardware. Not a decent game designed for the hardware (Nintendo Land), or a great game ported from another platform (Twilight Princess Wii), but a game that people look at and say, "Oh my goodness, I need an NX for that!"
@Yorumi Your post to me highlighted a bigger problem with Wii U, only 10 million sold. Wii sold 100 milion. PS4 has sold 35 million in 2 years. PS3 sold 80 million, so did Xbox 360. If they could sell a decent amount of NX, say 10 million a year, in just 2 years NX would have double the install base of WiiU, that's 10 milion NX owners who never owned a Wii U and therefore SSB for Wii U. That's 10 million potential customers.
The problem almost every one on here makes is that we all own Wii U and all the games we want, but there are so many more people who never owned a Wii U, and probably never will at this point, or SSBU, the port would be for them. Sony pretty much has come out and said the Uncharted Trilogy was for Xbox 360 owners who bought a PS4, not PS3 owners.
NX needs to attract way more than just Wii U owners, it needs to attract millions upon millions of non-Wii U owners, and the way you do that is with great games at launch. SSB NX is for them, Pikmin 4 will be for us. Zelda U and Zelda NX will be for all of us.
I could see a remastered Smash 'game of the year' port with a couple new features, but I doubt they'll do a new game so soon.
Besides, there are other titles I rather have for the NX's launch library.
@Snivy102 please no
@HyperSonicEXE "And Smash is trying too hard to be competitive AND fun, mutually exclusive things."
Is this a joke? Or are you just bitter that some people play Smash differently than you?
With me being grumpy on so many NL articles, let me show you my reaction to this one.
With the exception of smash bros and Melee, SSB games are few and far apart. I highly doubt they've been working on this under the radar. It'll more likely be a port, and if NX is the hybrid it seems to be, it may even be both 3DS and WiiU versions (all stages, all trophies, both smash run and smash tour). Could be a few extra additions too but I doubt it.
Well this could mean that it'll be a complete edition of SSB WiiU/3DS with all characters and stages. Hopefully it makes use of the NX and we could get a return for Adventure Mode or at least the Ice Climbers.
I always felt it was kind of a waste to not re-use the amazing character models in the SSB games. Would love to see spin-offs in the hack-n-slash or sports genres.
What has this guy leaked before?
For me there are only two logical things
1. This is a port of probably the Wii U version with all the content.
2. This is a new game, which would mean the NX won't be as close as we think it is, and that most likely Sakurai would not be (completely) involved. The possibility of him leaving is always there and someone else has to carry the torch.
We will see, but colour me not interested if this is just a port. And @rjejr is right, so many people disregarded Wii U that this is a second chance for them.
Looks like a special edition of Smash for Wii U that might include all the characters. Also hopefully namco is making a Tales of game for the NX. This also makes me wonder if NX will be backwards compatible to begin with.
@rjejr I'd be fine with a deluxe edition of Smash U with DLC included and enhanced graphics as an NX launch title. You make a good point about people having missed out on the first go-around. I also don't mind Nintendo devoting the time and resources to it, as the amount required is miniscule compared to developing a new game.
@rjejr
You're assuming Nintendo's software is what people want.
People who buy Xbox, Playstation and Steam will not buy a Nintendo system because it has Nintendo games instead of "hardcore"/real games.
You need these people in order to get 3rd party support and good press.
Only the non "hardcore"/real gamers are willing to buy Nintendo games.
@FX29
PS4 proved that people don't like BC in their systems.
Though it is safe to assume Nintendo's next handheld will be BC, because all Nintendo handhelds have been BC with their predecessors and ARM chips are cheap to buy.
Not surprised, with a business man like Kimishima in power you'd kind of expect Nintendo to follow more of the Sony/Microsoft trends. The big ones for PS4/XB1 are remastering lots of 1-2 year old games from last gen during the launch window and paid subscription fee for online multiplayer.
@rjejr No way all those mii costumes and crap should be actually valued at what Nintendo prices them at.
Too soon for a new game. Probably a port. It honestly makes FAR more sense to port than Zelda does.
So I just wasted so much on Smash DLC over the lifespan of Smash4, now they're going to probably make a port of it with potentially all the DLC for $60? Great......
@TruenoGT
Not to mention that would make the GBA Virtual Console as portable as it should always have been.
@Grumblevolcano
He maybe a business man, but he doesn't have full power as CEO.
He has joint leadership and the employees have a say in how the company is ran.
Nintendo has their own culture, which he is following.
Though Nintendo most certainly will get hell for "rehashing" games at NX launch by the media and gamers.
@Xenocity
As far as my memory allows me to recall the BC offered by Sony caused Microsoft to snark "We won't charge you for games you already own", so yeah...
At this point there's been soo much speculation that I'm confused about what has been actually announced and what remains as merely rumour! Wasn't there a positive (as in real) announcement of a game in development for NX a while ago? It was going to on on other systems too, but I can't remember what it was.
Ports are okay if as @rjejr says, the install base is expected to be much larger, drawing in new players. In that context it makes sense, though brand new games would be nice. Can we not have both and both Nintendo and third party? Did we ever get confirmation of the rumoured Paper Mario?
I really hope that NX release info is amazing enough to be positively received when they finally get round to issuing some kind of statement. The disappointment otherwise will turn the interweb into a system killer before it's even anywhere near launch. Not sure leaving so much time for speculation is a good thing.
@Xenocity "Though Nintendo most certainly will get hell for "rehashing" games at NX launch by the media and gamers." No they won't if Sony can do it with those remasters and go scott free Nintendo can do it as well. But either way if this is true this port isn't for Nintendo fans it's for the people who never bought a Wiiu or even play Smash 4.
Seems like quite a reach, but I figure a complete edition of Smash 4 is on its way in some form or another. I would've expected it at the end of this year for Wii U, but perhaps it'll launch on the NX.
@rjejr I do not own a Wii u
@TruenoGT
All fine and dandy as long as the NX is indeed a home/handheld hybrid. Otherwise it'll just be another home console stealing all the other retro handhelds from the 3DS Virtual Console.
@Yorumi Yeah that's why i said if Sony can do with the Last of us remastered Nintendo can do it as well. Cause that Last of us remastered sold pretty damn well and it was a very smart move. If Nintendo does it with Smash well it will turn out great for them and the NX(whatever it's called)
This rumor....if true....points me in the direction of a handheld some what on par with a XB1 and will release in 2016 and this SSB will be a port of the Wii U version slightly upgraded and including the DLC. By the time the home console NX version arrives in 2017 they will have a patch to play SSB with enhanced specs on the new home NX and it will be a cohesive nx family that plays all the same games, works together to offer you Wii U and DS like experiences and offers everything that is currently in the eShop for Wii U on both the handheld and home console. Since it will be one family any game you own on 1 will work with the other and as an added bonus anyone with a Wii U can link their old gamepad to the NX so you can play all Wii U games even if you don't buy the NX handheld......also I'm probably full of crap
As long as I don't have to buy it all again I don't really mind. Hopefully with the introduction of the new Nintendo account system in march, a simple look at my digital content will allow me to access all my Wii U based smash goodness on my shiny new NX! Sigh!!!....
Sounds like a smart move to me.
NX is leading with a last gen port/remaster?
I guess this really will be Nintendo's true next gen system.
Highly unlikely, seeing how long development times have been on smash games. They not only had to work on completely new and untested hardware but also jugle this project with the ongoing Smash 4 expansions.
It all depends on the NX launch window of course. If that thing is 2-3 years off, then maybe. It would make a hell of a launch title though.
What COULD work (which will not sit well with consumers though) is a Splatoon approach. Meaning the game gets released with its bare minimum content and gets frequent additions once they are finished and tested.
This will also continue the "hype train" started with the Dojo back then with Brawl. Im rather skeptical but i hope for the best.
I want a main Pokemon Game with NX
Oh God, I really hope is a port of Smash 4 (Wii U & 3DS).
That being said, if Bandai Namco is working on making other games, I want them to bring back the Baten Kaitos Gamecube series for the NX. I never played these games, but somehow, it interests me.
@Wouwter This statement. Lol.
@Yorumi Not really a huge Mario fan and I am extremely happy with my Wii U. Not thrilled with the mismanagement of the eShop/Virtual Console portions of the system, but that isn't a knock on the system as it is on NoA (and Nintendo's DRM policies in general). The only real complaint (if it is one) is that Nintendo focused too much on platformers, but that is somewhat akin to arguing that Sega focused too much on arcade conversions for the Dreamcast. Nintendo is going to focus on what they do best, just as Sega did in their time.
I'll just play devil's advocate and say that I'm very unsure of these news, no matter the source.
As per usual, I'll wait for something more official.
If true,It will probably be the Wii U version with all the DLC is my guess..
Considering the rumour circulating everywhere around the internet the past 12 hours (well everywhere except Nintod Life as far as I can tell) that NX is a handheld, at least in 2016, then the most logical port would be of the 3DS version.
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=ihs+nintendo+nx+handheld
Just wanted to point that out as most people have written it's likely a port of the Wii U version of SSB. Though I suppose it could be a port of the Wii U version on the handheld, that would be different, though 8 players on a handheld screen seems a bit problematic, even on the larger XL screen. .
Didn't want to link to a competitors site, but I doubt NL is in much competition w/ the NASDAQ. And news from the DOW Jones Business News seems more credible than a website from somebody's basement.
http://www.nasdaq.com/article/new-nintendo-handheld-device-seen-likely-this-year-20160128-00463
February should be when we get the first NX details, much like how Sony unveiled the PS4 in February, 2013. And likewise, it needs a press conference with a countdown much like what Sony did.
The reason PS4 did so well in the first year was all about hype and momentum. And I think the initial reveal at the start of the year, followed up by consumer friendly messaging really persuaded people to buy a PS4.
Uhh wasn't it obvious NX would get a complete edition?
Doubt a new game of the rumor pans out, but like stated a "Complete Edition". Which would suck for anyone who dumped money on the DLC but such is life.
Such a launch title would make the NX have a strong opening. Add in at least one good new game (Pikmin 4?) and we might have a winner. Though Smash does nothing for me; the last Smash I liked was the original and as a fighter of any merit I find it lacking. Hoping to see how this turns out.
Just wanna put this out there, if smash does get ported there might be more doc characters considering they got ice climbers working on Wii U there's no reason for the NX not to have them as the NX isn't the 3ds's partner like the Wii U is therefore not keeping the verison plus it would be the "definitive edition" so more characters would be a real seller for fans!
I'm 99% certain it will be a port of the Wii U version. There's no way they've had time to develop a new one, regardless of the fact that it'd be plain stupid to start anew on a game that came out recently (and isn't done until Feb. with DLC).
It probably will be a version with all DLC, which would be great since it's already over $60 for the DLC anyway. I imagine more modes will be added or an improved map maker, which I would buyou immediately.
A port of smash Wii u would make sense. That game carries full functionality for the vast majority of the current amiibo roster. That guarantees their relevance and continuance onto NX from launch day.
I would however hope/expect that it would an "ultimate" edition that had ALL released DLC.
I do however sincerely doubt this is the only title Nintendo has in development for NX. They have something like 10 software development teams, not to mention that Retro Studios had released nothing for close to 3 years.
Having 3-4 first party launch titles would be amazing 2-3 more likely. If one of these is a full smash, that's a smart move.
A strong launch virtual console with some good surprises would also be a winning move. (GameCube!!!!! And finally confirmation of why Nintendo renewed ownership of the Eternal Darkness IP)
Not changing the game at all, but making it compatible against Wii u
@Xenocity You, sir need to stop bashing Nintendo fans. I'm a hardcore gamer who's owned many non-Nintendo consoles over the years and yet my Nintendo consoles see more action than my non-Nintendo one's for one very important reason...
Most games on other consoles have become far too dark with extreme violence and "realistic representation of war" over the past two console generations. Considering the precarious state the world is in right now, the last thing I want is to be reminded of real-world dangers. I just want to have fun playing my games!
@Yorumi At the very least, the WiiU achieved it's goal of making games much more social. Not the same way online games do, but simplementation things like seeing miiverse posts about the level you just played and being able to relate to them. People asking you to play their levels in SMM. It never truly feels like you're playing alone.
@Yorumi One thing I think could bring decent numbers back to Nintendo hardware is a competitively priced portable w/ TV out. Not sure why, but it's something I'm fixated on. (Well besides dates, everybody knows I'm fixated on dates.)
There are many games on 3DS I haven't played b/c of the small screen - Kid Icarus, Lugi's Masnion 2, Link Between Worlds, MH4. And there are obviously many people, who for whatever reason - stupid name, limited internal storage, high price, basically the same games on Wii U as Wii, just in HD - haven't purchased a Wii U yet but there are probably games they want to play on it. Make 1 $250 system that plays ALL of Nitnod's games both on tv or on the go - Monster Hunter, Mario 2D and 3D, Pokemon, Pokemon clone Yoakia Watch, SSB, MK - i think that system sells, and sells well. Even if it isn't backwards compatible w/ either 3DS or Wii U, they can still port stuff, that would work.
I also think it could work as a $200 portable that needs a $200 home console for TV HD and 5.1 sound, but then they better bring the games.
If anything, it would be a port of the Wii U/3DS games with the dlc. However, I'm not falling for this rumor just yet. Yeah, I know it's supposed to be from a reliable source, but remember last year when reliable sources said that Shovel Knight and Inklings would be in Smash? Yeah...
in early 2014, namco posted a job recruitment thing for a supposed smash game for release in 2015. when pokken tournament came out, i assumed that's what it really was. this might just be a continuation of the name designation of pokken as smash.
the 'final smash edition' of smash we can already assume is coming, but if the nx can play both wii u and 3ds games then it won't need porting unless they want it to be devoid of the same clunkiness of playing wii games on the u.
At most this would be a port of Smash 4 or Melee considering it takes a few years to make one. The team who worked on Smash 4 has been pretty busy with making DLC and balancing for the past year so I doubt they were working on a new Smash already if Nintendo's next console releases within the next 2 years.
@Neko_Ichigofan
I'm not bashing anyone
NPD and EEDAR sales data openly shows that "hardcore"/real gamers don't buy Nintendo systems and handhelds.
They also rarely buy PC games.
The same data shows those gamers won't normally playNintendo games or any colorful/E rated games.
The data also shows those gamers buy most of the 3rd party releases.
Lastly the sales data shows families, "casuals", women, nerds and others are the primary buyers of Nintendo products since the SNES.
The sales data goes back to the SNES in the West.
My 3DS gets the vast majority of my gaming time.
Wii U is the only console I own.
I own a few Steam and PC games too.
I've owned every Nintendo system to date.
But what we buy doesn't change how the industry works and what "hardcore"/real gamers buy.
@rjejr Thought you may be interested in some DLC price stats. I posted this in 2 Smash forum threads.
Given the rumour of the NX port, I figured I'd show some calculations for the DLC only for Wii U (in £):
All stages and characters: £16.16 (Fighter Bundle #1) + £7.16 (Pirate Ship, Dream Land 64, Hyrule Castle 64, Peach's Castle 64) + £2.29 (Super Mario Maker) + £10.78 (Cloud & Midgar, Bayonetta & Umbra Clock Tower) + £4.49 (Corrin) = £40.88 (assuming there's no unannounced stages or characters)
All DLC (stages, characters, Mii costumes): £9.11 (Collection #1) + £19.88 (Collection #2) + £9.10 (Collection #3) + £8.91 (Collection #4) + £6.77 (Collection #5) + £14.02 (Collection #6) = £67.79 (assuming there's no unannounced content)
Note that Fighter Bundle #1 contains Mewtwo, Roy, Lucas, Ryu and the stage Suzaku Castle. Also the bundles do not have any discount over buying everything separately.
Please no flames! I like and own each of the systems but it's frustrating with Nintendo always working in a new gimmick / feature, that usually becomes a problem with devs.
Opinion alert:
We are in process of beign screwed by Nintendo, again...
N64: cart instead of a CD
GameCube: finally used optical storage, but alas, small disks with not enough room.
Wii: no horse power under the hood, very pleabean online...
Wii U: much better but still gymped online system and sub xboxone & ps4 specs... Saddled with the gamepad cost.
I have a feeling Nintendo will make big mistakes again. They will call it "innovation"
With all that extra processing power, think of all the new Fire Emblem characters we could get!
Big names familiar to long-time Nintendo fans like Rhajat, Severa, Owain (magic sword fighter), Kanna, Billy, Bally, Belly, Boaty, Ryoma, Carin, Jim, Elise, Anna, Gurei...
That's how you sell a game!
Ooh crap: had a bad thought:
Wii U = Saturn
NX = Dreamcast
Dreamcast got a lot right, but Sega pissed off so many customers, with the 32x / Saturn / Dreamcast debacle... People felt screwed... No value
The twist is that it will be a port of Smash Bros Brawl XD
I'm hoping for an improved smash run and the inclusion on ice climbers, nothing holding them back from this version, right?
It can have more stages too right?
@Xenocity Lol! I've been a gamer for 25 years if I'm not a "real gamer" then you're a monkey's uncle.
Jk, but seriously where the heck do you get the information that "real gamers" don't play Nintendo consoles? FACEPALM
If the NX is a home/handheld console hybrid like people have been saying, this game could potentially be a combination of the 3DS and the Wii U game. If that's the case, this game could be a game-changer. It would be by far the biggest Smash Bros game by a long shot, and if it was a combination of the two games, I'd consider it a day one buy.
Just give us the deets, Ninty. This is getting out of hand.
If the NX hopes to win over the mass public it needs to be new games on release. No ones going to buy a new console for old ported games.
@JohnnyC
Exactly this. If Nintendo are using any sort of basic sense they'll have a few remastered Wii U games ready to go. The Wii U is unlikely to pass 15 million and they will want to sell a lot more NX machines. That's a lot of people to aim for.
A few voices on the internet might complain but they are irrelevant compared to business sense. For the minimal cost and effort, remakes are a great way to flesh out a machines library in the early days.
I think it's obvious that, if the rumor is true, this will just end up being a remastered version of the Wii U game. It's far too soon for a new entry at a development and consumer standpoint. It always made sense to me for Nintendo to make a new version for the NX. The only thing that will get me to purchase this new version would be if they included all of the DLC (or at least some form of new content). And it would make sense too, as they said there would be no new DLC, probably due to the production of the NX version.
Nope, unless it's Super Smash Bros G with G Rank Master Hand fights.
@DESS-M-8
...and agree with this. The lack of actual Nintendo games for 3DS and Wii U means they are working away on NX games currently. Something like a Smash remake will be to fill out the schedule alongside new games rather than remakes being a they have.
(As long as Nintendo don't make a horrible mess of another launch of course)
I don't understand why everyone is so down on the Wii U. I think it's perfectly fine and the extreme hate is completely unwarranted.
For what? Every game I play on it plays smooth as silk. No lag, very minimal (if any) load times.
If you're playing games for their graphics, then you aren't a gamer. You'd be happy with those interactive DVD movie "games". In my opinion, the graphics look great anyway.
Well, I'm not going to let the laziness of some incompetent crybabies shape my opinion of the system.
@Yorumi
How so? I've been consistently playing new games on my Wii U since it was released.
The last time I played my PS4 was 3 months ago.
SSB4 Wii U + NX + All DLC + Smash Run + Improved stage builder + Other stuff (Adventure Mode springs to mind) =
This would be a brilliant move. Port Smash 4 to NX and improve the online multiplayer. Sell it at a discount to those that already own it for Wiiu or 3ds.
I think most people were anticipating an NX port of Smash with all of the goodies both versions have+DLC. Sounds like a good move business wise.
As for Namco support on the NX, we'll have to see, though of all 3rd parties, Nintendo tends to have better support from Namco than others, so hopefully whatever they're making is worth getting, even if they're just multiplatforms of already announced games like Tekken 7 or Tales of Berseria
I will believe it when I see it. Nintendo is horrible with launch titles, especially when the Wii U launched.
@Danrenfroe2016
Sega did upset a lot of people but they had 3 failures under their belt (4 if you count Nomad). It's nothing that can be measured but I think Sega had a lot less goodwill then than Nintendo do now. The other major difference is Sega were on the brink financially in 1999. Nintendo most definitely are not, they're cash rich.
@EXP
That's what I was thinking. It would be an instability for me if it was bundled with the system at launch!
...Wat? Give Sakurai a break! >.<
What's intriguing about this idea is if NX is a hybrid console, a port could theoretically include both Wii U and 3DS exclusive features.
@Vandy
It isn't powerful enough for some games. Just the way it is. Wanting power isn't about wanting 'interactive movies', that's a daft thing to say. It also facilitates gameplay.
Also a daft thing to say is the 'incompetent crybabies' comment. Developers need to make money, they need publishers to fund their games and they also need to make money. If its going to take longer to make a Wii U version of a game because it has a markedly different architecture to its competition its going to cost more money. That version then has to sell to a small userbase that doesn't buy many non-Nintendo games. It isn't worth it.
Another daft thing to say is thinking that because you personally haven't used your PS4 in 3 months that means the lack of Wii U games isn't a problem (I use my PS4 and XB1 more than my Wii U these days but that's almost irrelevant too). The PS4 and XB1 clearly, unarguably, have far more games than the Wii U.
It won't work. Let's hope its just a rumour.
Those that will buy the NX on the day or week of release will buy it what ever games launch with it.
But other that can't decide won't be rushing out to buy the NX just because another Smash Bros game is launching.
Nintendo is still flogging the Wii U version and folks are still playing it, they won't splash out £300/£400 to play it again. Maybe in a couple of years.
If they get the launch titles wrong like they did for the Wii U, its down hill all the way.
@electrolite77
It's also daft to think that there is no difference between quantity and quality. Just because the PS4 and XB1 have "far more games" doesn't mean many of them are worth playing or going out of your way to get the system for. Further to that, almost all of these games are on both consoles. What would make you choose one over the other?
Nintendo is at a unique advantage in that their library, while smaller, is made up of very unique games.
I think the problem is that a lot of developers actually are very short-sighted or have an unwarranted bias.
Once again the comments section turns a rumour into hysteria.
@vandy gets it. @wireware gets it. All those people damning a system and a game based on hearsay and no official word don't get it.
NX launch titles should include:
Smash Bros. 4 Complete/GOTY Edition
Splatoon Complete/GOTY Edition
Pikmin Trilogy
The Legend of Zelda for Wii U/NX in a Twilight Princess situation
The goal for a new console should be to convince everyone who skipped a Wii U that they should pick up the NX, and look, all the great games on Wii U are now here for NX owners!
Buy the NX! And all the Wii U games you already own again! Enjoy the extra blast processing for each newly enhanced title!
No Cross-buy!
Eek
smash bros ultimate. Probably inclucde a percentage of DLC content. Stages, Costumes, but not all the DLC characters. But will allow you to transfer over all DLC you have purchased to that point. Comes with Master Hand Amiibo, that does something special. Unlocks a new stage or something. If Back-compat is a no go then this as a port seems obvious, as Smash is a huge selling point for Nintendo in all reigons
Yeah, right...
Uh huh. Yeah.
Did Sakurai finish Corrin and Bayonetta? Nope.
NX rumours since 2014. -_-
@Yorumi Then it just might be that Nintendo games are no longer your 'thing' and that is okay if that is the case. You know when you are going to purchase a Nintendo console, you are going to see a lot of platformers, Mario, and re-releases. It is just what they have done since the Gameboy (and went into full time during the GBA). It is like blaming the TG-16 or the Dreamcast for only primarily focusing on coin-op arcade conversions. It is the nature of the company and asking to be something they are not does not work for long.
I think Nintendo did a fantastic job of attempting to diversify given that third party vanished on the system almost immediately. They invested in games that were outside of their wheelhouse that in some cases worked (Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors) and sometimes didn't (Devil's Third, Fatal Frame). They attempted to create new franchises (Splatoon, Mario Maker, Captain Toad). They brought back loved games with the two Zeldas and the Wii games. They masterfully built on loved franchises (Mario Kart 8/Smash Bros). They also attempted to revive beloved franchises gone idle (Yoshi, Mario Party 10, Mario Tennis), and again some fell flat for being rushed. Nintendo essentially has done everything in their power to provide a large and varied library.
The last time a company attempted to cover all the bases was Sega. They did it with the Master System because they had to (everyone was locked into Nintendo's monopolistic contract) and again with the Saturn/Dreamcast. Just take sports for an example, it is a hard reality that outside of Playstation's console exclusive MLB game, there is zero baseball games outside of MLB's RBI Baseball (an arcade game) and an indie Super Mega Baseball. That entire genre is dead without a single publisher. The same for American football, basketball, hockey, and to an extent association football. The emptiness you feel is because there are no longer the mid-tier publishers left, not that the console is not capable.
@Yorumi Hahaha ok, you and I are done here.
You've revealed your extreme bias with the fact that you are generalizing the games rather than looking at them objectively. Yes, 2D platformers have been done, it's a genre. However, the creativity and inventiveness of what you add to it is what sets you apart. Nintendo's 2D platformers have such life and such character and are always very polished. They're what true gamers want - a fun experience. You're trying to tell me that Mario Kart 8 is "no different" an experience than any other cart racer? That Super Mario 3D World is "no different" an experience than any other platformer? Get out of here with your bias.
Or should I throw your argument back in your face? I look at all the other consoles and all I see are first-person shooters and sports games. The same thing over and over and over again. What's unique about that? The fantastic processing power that seems to only be used to make the brown textures muddier?
Come on.
I'll let all of the fools argue about what the "nail in the coffin" of the Wii U is this week. It's always something different. Every week, they hammer in that final "nail in the coffin". Breaking news: "Nintendolife comment section says that the fact that the Wii U is offered in two color schemes is the TRUE NAIL IN THE COFFIN".
@Darknyht Great points.
A 'definitive edition' of Smash U, that includes all DLC and patches for the price of a standard game on NX would make sense. It's already in 1080p/60fps so they won't update the graphics, and I can't see them including any more content, 'cos you know, it would already have all the extra stuff.
Sigh. Once the announcement is real, nintendo can get back from rumoured to be doomed to just being doomed for a while. Makes things so much easier.
@MegaAdam Wouldn't it be Pikmin Quadrilogy (or Tetralogy) given Pikmin 4 is confirmed to exist though?
It seems far too early for a new Smash Bros. The developers always seem to spend a long time on getting it perfect and poor Sakurai needs a holiday.
A port of the 3DS and Wii U combined would be great though. It wouldn't take as much resources as a completely new game to create. Plus, it could encourage people who played older Smash Bros who didn't pick up a Wii U to get a NX.
If Smash Bros does come out for NX I highly doubt it will be a completely new game. It would probably be the 3DS/Wii U version with all DLC included, and maybe some new modes or features.
@Vandy Yorumi is known for being incredibly critical of pretty much everything. Don't take it too personally.
Yawn...
I think that's an amazing idea. Smash games are not easily made, so a port of Smash 4 (wich is insanely good) sounds great. Add all the DLC and some extras and that will be an outstanding game for people who never owned a Wii U. I kind of expected it.
@Vandy +1
@Vandy
Personally I think PS4 and XB1 both have more quality games. While Metacritic isn't by any means a flawless measure, it agrees with me. The Wii U has a smattering of absolute gems, no question, but that's it. Its a thin library with very little expansion to come whereas I already have more games for the other two with lots more to come. I like my Wii U and have had a lot of fun with it but there's no point being in denial about how it fares versus the competition.
As for the libraries of the other two sharing a lot of games, what does that matter when you're plating the games? It doesn't. If you want to choose between them you go for either e.g. Forza Horizon 2, Rare Replay, Ori and the Blind Forest and Sunset Overdrive or Tearaway Unfolded, Bloodborne, Drive Club and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.
@MegaAdam
Yes. Somebody who gets it.
I am still loving my 3DS and WiiU. I'm not so hyped about the NX. This year is the year of RPGs for me. I didn't like playing Smash on the WiiU. It was the game pad that hurt my hands. So if Nintendo wants to cash in they should go for it. I think they should port Splatoon as well. Why not. I also think they are going to have backwards capabilities so I'm not sure why this rumor has merit. It is a rumor.
I do hope Bandai Namco does a Tales game on the NX. That's one of my favorite series. It is why I bought a PS3. I wonder what's going to be their launch titles because that is what will get me to be on board faster.
Smash Bros. on NX is a no-brainer, but the news here is that it might come at launch. It would most likely be an enhanced and complete version of the current gen game, a Super Smash Bros. for NX, if you will.
That Gamecube controller adapter had better work on the NX too!!
Here we go!
How? Is this going to be a port of Smash 4 or a new game? No way in hell is it a new game, it's too soon, these games have a massive generation gap between them. And they couldn't be adding in more DLC if it's a port because Bayonetta is the last bit of DLC according to Sakurai. It seems likely it is a port because they would want to keep it alive on a more successful console. Still, at least it's a great launch title, even if it is a port.
I wouldn't be surprised if Wii U Smash Bros and MK8 were released but in a "Ultimate" versions including all DLC.
Either Smash Wii U gets an NX port or NX won't see Smash at all. It's gonna be a short generation and no way Sakurai starts from scratch again. Certainly not to be ready at launch.
All other properties can safely see sequels but Sakurai isn't going to dive right back in when this one has barely been out a year and still receiving DLC. So this is one IP where either it gets ported or it gets skipped. I'll gladly take a port.
@Xenocity
You sure do like informing us of how unhappy gamers are on other sites lately, almost every article.
Don't think anyone cares how other people on other sites feel- people here are strongly opinionated and make up their own minds, be it with or against the grain.
@Yorumi
Wii U has too many skipped IP's (mostly stemming from the fact this generation will be so short). But what is there is extremely solid. GameCube has always boasted my favorite Nintendo library (it had 2 Metroid Primes, the best F-Zero, 2 Star Fox games, 2 Pikmin games, etc). But what makes me respect the Wii U library is that of those limited releases, many are the best there's ever been (Pikmin 3 better than 1/2, NSMBU better than all others, Smash and Mario Kart 8 my favorites yet, etc), and even some of the best 3rd party games (Bayonetta 2, W101 and MH3U).
It could also be that it just feels so much better finally playing these games in HD.
It'll be Smash U with all DLC and benefiting from whatever new features the NX has. Maybe they will toss in a new character or two as well. No way is it a new Smash. Makes sense to me.
I think most of us have always believed a NX port of Smash bros was going to happen.
And just for the heck of it, i think the 3ds and wii-u version will now share stages in the NX version.
Namco maybe working on games, most likely commissioned by Nintendo. It annoys me to no end that Namco are so reluctant to bring any of their own games over to Nintendo systems.
@Vandy lol people are still defending the Wiiu. That's cute
While a lot of the conversation (here included) is on the NX vs the Wii U, I'm really quite interested to see where things go in the portable sense. The 3DS has been fantastic (full disclosure: I love the Vita as well, so I'm biased towards portability), and I would love to see what they can do next in that format. I was a bit bummed that the article @rjejr posted suggested no OLED screen. The Vita version of that looks lovely, even though they dumped it in the updated hardware iteration.
The Wii U could have done better sales-wise, but I got my money's worth out of it. The NX could be interesting, but we don't know enough and I have no reason to buy one. It'll all come down to the games, a decision up to each of us.
Just like it always does.
I wouldn't expect any new content at all if they do release a port on NX. If they do release any new content, it will be Ice Climbers.
Anyways, if I were Nintendo I'd port over the major Wii U titles for the NX launch or launch window:
Smash Bros, Zelda U, Pokken Tournament, Bayonetta 1&2, Xenoblade X, maybe Splatoon or Super Mario Maker, and hell, release a Zelda Wind Waker HD + Twilight Princess HD on one disc.
BC simply isn't worth it for a dozen or so games. Ports/remasters is the way to go.
@TwilightAngel Hey, thanks for comin' out and contributing nothing. You've done your good deed for the day.
If you think back to how Nintendo used the Wii to give certain games the chance they thought they deserved on the GameCube - Twilight Princess, Pikmin, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat and Pikmin 2 - I suspect they're going to do the same with NX.
NX may well be not much more powerful than Wii U at all, but more of a "fresh start", with definitive versions of Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 to use as the new baseline, very likely Zelda U as well, and possibly many of the big Wii U games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox etc.
I'm thinking maybe its a 3rd version of 4 (SB for Nintendo NX or whatever.) that either has exclusive modes like the board game or the 3DS mode (Who's name escaped me right now. XD) or hell, maybe all the Wii U and 3DS modes and content rolled into 1! Its much too early for SB 5, especially considering how much Sakuri packed into every game. As for DLC, complete seems likely but they could also promote crossbuy for the NX by stating all your DLC from the 3DS/Wii U will be carried over. It be kinda neat if they resumed new DLC for the new version as well as exclusive to NX but that's me dreaming.
There is no way in hell that the Wii U has a better lineup than some in the past. Tons of missing IPs and gameplay styles and rehashes of previous titles really kills this lineup, I'm surprised so many people are praising it because it really feels like they have no idea what they're doing anymore. Definitely the worst Nintendo's had yet.
Nintendo can't do anything right by people, apparently.
No one's saying the Wii U is the best console ever.
We're saying that you're all ridiculous because you've been hating on it since day one. I distinctly remember that even before Smash Bros or Splatoon was announced, people were already saying "The Wii U is on its last legs" and "Wii U is dead" and "The nail in the coffin was ____".
Just make me not want the NX. I don't want to but another console atm.
@Vandy Don't bother with him, he's just a troll.
In my case though, I never said the Wii U was dead, I was just waiting for the lineup to become something more than weapons grade mediocrity and it never did.
@Vandy Yeah I will never understand how people can claim that the Wii U has no games seeing as I literally have 15 or so unplayed games waiting and many more to purchase! Maybe they just have too much free time?
@zool I doubt a ported/polished Smash will sell the NX, but that doesn't matter so long as the NX can sell a ported/polished Smash.
Development/resourced shouldn't be huge, and I reckon a comprehensive Smash game with everything from both 3DS/Wii U + DLC, AND a few new extras included would be enough to tempt many initial NX buyers to get n+1 games with the console instead of n.
Smash 4 has such enduring appeal, and has grown to such a size that it would a shame to see it 'go down' with the Wii U, but for the same reasons, it seems unnecessary to create a whole new entry from scratch for the NX when the current entry represents a pinnacle that would be hard to usurp. Releasing a slightly shinier, comprehensive 'Ultimate Edition' of Smash 4 with the NX neatly passes the baton.
Not every game has to sell a system. Most are content to simply sell themselves.
hmmm....will it be a port, an enhanced remake, or something new altogether?
@Bolt_Strike he's funny though and his avatar has big eyes. He's a keeper. He called me a hooker one time and I thought it was so funny. Don't take him to heart.
If this is a port of Smash 4, I'll pass. Ports bore me, and I don't play (or like) Smash 4 enough to buy it a third time. The only way I would be interested is if there was a story/adventure mode, or Ridley.
Maybe this would be part of the account system of the NX. In this case, this would be a re-release of an old title.
If not, then... KING K ROOL!!
@Maxz if the NX like the Wii U does not sell well then it will not Sell a new Smash Bros. game.
If Smash Bros was one of those games that would sell a console then it would have sold Wii U's.
@Dpishere
That's kind of the boat that I'm in. I still haven't even gotten to Bayonetta or Luigi U. There's a lot to be said about games that have so much content and such an enduring appeal - like Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Splatoon and Mario Maker. I'm STILL playing these quite often. They're in my regular rotation.
@Xenocity even though it states one possible port (or possible spin off) and a bunch of new games. Why do people love to hate Nintendo over rumours that never come to fruition?
@Bolt_Strike Wii U has a better library than N64 IMO.
@MadAdam81 Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Conker, OoT, and Kirby 64 >>>>> pretty much everything on Wii U except Splatoon and Mario Kart 8.
@MadAdam81 It depends on what you want out of your console. Wii U's first party library may be better than N64 but its third party library is pathetic when put up against Rare's classics.
If it's an enhanced version that combines all the features of both the 3DS and Wii U version all in one, I'm SOLD.
I've been wanting to play Smash Run in HD for SO LONG, you have no effing clue.
@Bolt_Strike
Captain Toad, Bayonetta, Wonder 101, Kirby Rainbow Curse, Yoshi's Wooly World, Super Mario Maker, Smash Bros, Super Mario (and Luigi) U, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze...
But ok.
@Vandy Well i could'ave said something that comment of yours about the Wiiu. Especially the variety part. That's what got me rolling.But why bother? It would'ave been talking to a damn wall. And before you say"you never played it! Or you never bought it! So why talk down about it!" I do have it and i still have it. The reason me and many others say it's dead. Is because there's no games!
@Bolt_Strike lol. Me a troll? You have proof?
@River3636 "Sorry brother some of us don't take shady practices like this. Or better yet don't act like mindless sheep who just accept everything like a hooker on the street." If the shoe fits wear it. I never called you a hooker brother. You called yourself one. LOL!
@Vandy NSMBU, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, Smash Bros, and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse are all rehashes of previous games. Yoshi's Woolly World and Super Mario Maker aren't far off from rehash territory either. Bayonetta and Wonderful 101 are niche games. The only truly good games are Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Captain Toad. So that lineup doesn't measure up to the N64, not by a long shot.
@TwilightAngel So I'm like a hooker? What does that mean? So say it the shepherd. So say it the flock. Are you buying the NX when it first comes out? Do you believe this rumor?
@Bolt_Strike Being niche has nothing to do with the game being good.
River3636 Again never called you a hooker. You called yourself one. And again(ugh)if the shoe fits wear it.
@Bolt_Strike
Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day were all rehashes of Super Mario 64.
@TwilightAngel It's ok if you call me a mindless sheep who acts like a hooker. I'll take it. Except for that mindless part.
I responded with a rant and at the end said something like (If you'll excuse me I'm going to hook down the street, but I don't just except anything).LOLOLOl
Then I got mad at Glacian guy (forgot the name) and then Santa zapped are comments.
I'm actually sorry about that. I had a bad week.
Anyway, what do you think the line ups going to be?
@Vandy No, they're not. They didn't blatantly copy every one of Mario's moves, 64's entire level structure and progression, its aesthetics. Even Banjo-Tooie, which is the same IP as Banjo-Kazooie, didn't feel like a recycling of Banjo-Kazooie because they added new moves and abilities which changed up the experience. Whereas the games I mentioned bring nothing to the table, they're just new levels with a couple of gimmicks thrown in that barely affect the experience. There's a world of difference between how past games handled sequels or separate IPs and how these games stack up against their predecessors.
@Bolt_Strike By your own definition, Mario Kart 8 is one of the biggest offenders. The gravity mechanic does NOT change up the experience at all, or at least not by much.
@TruenoGT all I know is they better figure out a way to do it cause if I find out that new NX owners have to start their VC library all over once again I'll be pissed and will be waiting on the PlayStation 5!! 😁 And they best be adding GameCube to the vc lineup as well!!
@IceClimbers Yes it does. Changing gravity actually does change how the game works and affects your strategy thanks to spin boosting.
Regardless, it has more of an impact on the game than anything they did in the platformers.
@Bolt_Strike Smash 4 is a rehash? Come on! Have you even played it? It couldn't play more different to Brawl or Melee. It's one of the advantages of being made from scratch.
@Freeon-Leon Smash games rarely change except for the characters. The mechanics tend to stay the same across the series.
@HyperSonicEXE Regarding MK8, they already had to cut features in Battle Mode, leaving it barebones without even proper arenas, so a simplification in MK9 would likely only hurt at this point...
You know? Now that I think about it, this further proves that the Nintendo NX won't be backwards compatible towards Wii U games, and that pretty much worries me. The Nintendo Wii U has an excelent line up of first party games, and knowing the fact that the NX won't be backwards compatible with Wii U games is dangerous for Nintendo, from a financial/business p.o.v.
The speculative line up:
Metriod X
Zelda U/X
KidIcarus X
Mario does Daisy X (a Mario game) I'm going with Luigi's Manson
F Zero X
And WiiU ports X
Pokemon X X X (i mean NX)
will there be third parties?
I HIGHLY doubt that a new smash bros will be a release title. Maybe a re-release with enhancements of some sort.
@Bolt_Strike The very basic mechanics maybe, but to say that Melee and Smash 4 play anything alike past that is foolish. They play very differently.
@Dankykong Probably so. Still, I think that they are aiming to the people that didn't buy a Wii U.
I hope that it comes bundle with the NX (with a pro controller, please!!).
@rjejr my theory to piggy-back on this:
The new Club Nintendo has secretly been running in the background until it gets revealed. And those of us who already bought the DLC will be able to carry it over to the new version on NX due to the new account system integration. Somehow the new Club Nintendo is going to play Into this if it's true. Pretty exciting I believe.
@John_Enigma Still, if the developers find easier to develop for the NX, then I'll say go for it and screw backwards compatibility. Still, they could prepare some Wii U games in digital form and have them sell for 15 bucks or so.
@maceng As long as Nintendo doesn't go the Sony route in where they charge ridiculous amounts of money for backwards compatible PS2 games for the PS4.
As for those other games that Namco is developing, I'd be willing to bet one of them is a port of Pokken. No way The Pokemon Company will let that game get overshadowed by a new hardware release. Past that, I'd say either a Tales of game, Tekken 7, a DBZ game (Xenoverse 2?), or Dark Souls III (I doubt it considering the series' director said the audience for Dark Souls doesn't exist on Nintendo platforms, which is probably true).
Reminds me of what Melee was to Smash 64! It WAS called SSB "Deluxe" in Japan, although it had more than enough content to be considered a sequel.
"Super Smash Bros. For NX". As if it's the Emerald or Crystal version of Smash, haha!
Ehhh, idk about this.
@Bolt_Strike
Weird, I guess all the new moves and abilities added to all of the games I mentioned aren't the same thing as the new moves and abilities added to the games you were talking about. And Super Mario Maker, that games is not at all different from Mario games of the past. I can think of at least a hundred other Mario games that allowed you to create your own platform game.
And I guess I haven't been reading my thesaurus closely enough because I wasn't aware that another word for "sequel" was "rehash". Thank you for educating me today.
In all seriousness, you completely destroyed your own dim-witted argument all by yourself with your last post. You served that one right up to me on a platter. There's nothing more I need to say.
@Vandy The ability to create your own levels has no impact on the mechanics. You're still running and jumping through levels exactly the way you did in the games represented in the designer, you're just messing around with the properties of certain assets. It's mildly interesting, but it doesn't exactly break away from what Mario's done for dozens of games already. What Mario needs is something more like Sunshine or Galaxy, something that ADDS assets and gameplay mechanics to the game and actually develops the gameplay.
And you're missing the point if you think I'm saying all sequels are rehashes. As I just pointed out, Sunshine and Galaxy continued with the formula 64 started. Or if you like, Metroid Prime 2 and 3 had their own twists on the Prime gameplay (the light/dark system and the PED system respectively). Sequels are not synonymous with rehashes.
@Bolt_Strike
I own Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Donkey Kong 64. I've played every one of these games all the way through, at least twice.
Enlighten me on how these games are so different from one another. I'm really curious to hear this. ESPECIALLY Kazooie and Tooie. If you think those two are wildly different, but DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze are "too similar", you must not have actually played the games.
@Lilith93 I agree.
@Vandy The only thing Mario 64 has in common with the other games is that they all share the same collection system. Beyond that, they're unique games with completely different characters with different abilities, different gameplay mechanics, and different assets. You don't triple jump in Banjo-Kazooie. You don't collect bananas and coins to buy new abilities in Mario 64. Hell, I'd barely even associate Conker with the rest because the gameplay isn't focused around collecting, it's more about using context sensitive abilities in different scenarios.
As for Returns vs. Tropical Freeze, there are some differences between the two, but most of what they added were things that never carried over from the Classics to Returns. Swimming, throwing, those are things we've already seen before, and we're supposed to praise them for playing catch up? What's next, are we going to have a third game that brings back more Animal Buddies and lets you play as the characters separately? And even what it does do differently is muted and doesn't really have much impact. Cranky doesn't really contribute much because the co-op gameplay limits the usefulness of character abilities in the level design. And the 3D is mainly for barrel cannon sections where they can't actually affect the design. So Tropical Freeze isn't really a step forward for the series.
Well, i suppose that if a Smash port is coming, then Zelda Wii U will definitely be coming to the NX, can't wait to see what the heck it is.
@Bolt_Strike
You're completely grasping at straws here. This is getting ridiculous.
Also, you didn't at all address the apparently HUGE differences between Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie.
@Vandy As Banjo-Kazooie vs. Banjo-Tooie, Banjo-Tooie added new moves to their repertoire, had new types of eggs, and made Mumbo playable. Admittedly it's not as much as say, Sunshine/Galaxy and the Prime games, but there's enough that it doesn't feel like they're recycling. Not in the same way as these platformers.
And if you think that's grasping at straws then you're looking at things too broadly.
Beurg... I've been a life long fan of ssb, but I'm done with that franchise. I want to see a new kind of Nintendo all-star.
@Bolt_Strike Little ole Bolty can't get what he wants can he?
Honestly, I doubt that Smash will come to the NX after the amount of content that this recent one has. If at all Nintendo decides to make another Smash, they would have to do it in such a way that its better than this one which will obviously take a lot of time and work.
NSMBU - 2 new playable characters with different play-styles, new powers, new level concepts, building upon the previous game because it's a SEQUEL
3D World - 4 playable characters with different play-styles, new powers, 3D/2D hybrid gameplay, new level concepts, 4 player simultaneous gameplay
Tropical Freeze - 2 new playable characters with different play-styles, new level concepts, building upon the previous game because it's a SEQUEL
Smash Bros - a ton of new characters each with their own play-styles, new levels, new powers, new modes, adjustments to the core gameplay, online multiplayer, 8 player mode, building upon the previous game because it's a SEQUEL
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse - new levels, new characters, new powers, adjustments to the core gameplay, new level concepts, building upon the previous game because it's a SEQUEL
It's also funny that you would ever cite Mario Kart 8 as being "less creative than the other cart racers", when Mario Kart created the concept of a cart racer!
If we really want to avoid looking at things "too broadly", then let's really narrow it down to how different all of the 300 variations of FPS, sports and racing games are on PS4 and XboxOne, the "superior consoles" because of their "great game libraries".
Wii U uses PowerPC architecture, as did it's predecessor, while the NX (I suspect) does not. In other words, no physical backwards compatibility at launch. Releasing an updated port or remaster of one or both versions of Smash 4 on NX is the most immediate way to keep it going into the future, after Wii U has kicked the bucket, and 3DS is admitted into a retirement home. (Both of which are going to happen once this year is through.)
@IceClimbers Xenoverse 2
As long as I get my Goku, Vegeta, Frieza and Cell amiibo.
@zool Well, Smash Bros DID sell Gamecubes and Wii's... Nintendo just botched the Wii U in general, from start to finish. So of course, Smash Bros didn't sell Wii U's. Better luck next time, I hope.
There is absolutely no chance in hell that there will be a new Smash Bros game in time for a 2016 release (unless it is some crazy Amiibo Festival-esque spin-offs that pisses off everyone). NX launching with a Smash 3DS/Wii U (likely the Wii U version - the NC handheld should be powerful enough to hande an downgraded Smash Wii U port) that includes all the DLC would be a pretty good idea.
Probably just a remake of the Wii U version for NX as it is to soon and not enough time to create a whole new game.
Yeah, right. This is bologna. It takes Nintendo foreverz to make a new Smash Bros. Someone seems to be smoking!
@rjejr Nice post. I agree with you that Nintendo should port some of the WiiU games and maybe some Wii games. It will make the console more attractive to non Nintendo fans to have a good launch lineup and thus should result in the system selling more, which will be a win for us. Personally, I also would like to see more people enjoy some of the games I've enjoyed on the WiiU.
@MarioPhD True, I could see them add Nana and Popo. Sakurai knows we're missing them and their inclusion would certainly give people justification to buy it again.
@Vandy Again, missing the point. What does NSMBU do that NSMB Wii or NSMB2 did not? What does it do that other Mario games did not? The very problem is that those games aren't building on the past, they're wallowing in it. The same characters, the same movesets, the same mechanics, the same settings, the same plotlines. I'm not saying every game needs to be wildly different from each other, there needs to be some sort of consistency to retain a level of quality, but the games don't stand out enough from each other or take the series in new directions. Instead they recycle even the most intricate of gameplay mechanics and the smallest of details. We don't need repetition at such a minute scale.
Also, when did I ever say Mario Kart 8 is less creative? I actually think it's one of the more creative games in this lineup.
@Bolt_Strike
"yeah MK8 is a different experience, it has less content and is less creative than other kart racers(again sonic all-stars for example)"
Direct quote there, guy.
You look at a game like NSMBU and think of it as "wallowing in the past" and a simple rehash. That's your problem. And it shows your extreme bias. It's the tried-and-true formula of the main Mario series. Why would you reinvent the wheel each time when you have a winning formula and all the fans want is the same perfection, but expanded upon? They try new things and have proven that with the Super Mario Galaxy series. And then they also produce traditional Mario games that are just as good.
Your opinion is very much like the same numbskull opinions that say Super Mario Galaxy 2 is "just a level pack". Again, why reinvent the wheel? As a fan of these games, I am completely fine with getting a game that is similar to the first, but introduces a few new elements and a whole ton of all new levels to complete the experience.
Perhaps you should take the fight to the Call of Duty series. Same mechanics, same settings, same plotlines, only slight variations. And there are like 20 of them. Or the Forza series. Or every baseball game that has come out since the beginning of video games. Or basketball. Or Halo, for that matter! What do any of these games do that their predecessor did not?
@Mister_Wu
Now now, don't get off track here. I agree that the arenas are woefully missing, but, things like parts with stats and Coins and needless things like anti-grav and driving underwater are scaring people away from the game. It's hard enough just to get people that come over to play who don't play it very often or are new to jump into turns and drift-boost (which are basic and crucial).
@Dr_Corndog
I play it all. Pure random, stock (begrudgingly, because people tend to camp), time, FD only, Battlefield only, Items, no Items - I've been playing since I rented it in Japanese to play on my US N64.
What I'm upset by, is that there's this camp of pseudo-elitists from Melee that, like Snaking in MKDS, broke the game and think they're somehow superior for not playing by the rules. When, in reality, they get their asses beat without their tricks because they can't strategize or can't make turns well.
A good portion of fighting game fans are like this. Not all, but many.
@Yorumi
Yes, but, that's two separate ways to play. And two separate communities.
@BertoFlyingFox a while back I proposed the idea of an Amiibo driven game in the style of the "warriors" franchise and suggested using smas Bros assets to reduce cost (plus ssbs like 60%, of the Amiibo range. You could have the different versions of character Amiibo unlocking costumes/versions. So lapping down the SSB Mario unlocks the SSB version and placing the 8 bit loads up either an 8 bit or 64 version
@Vandy Oh sure, throw out insults and cry bias, that sure helps your argument. Sounds like everything you're accusing me of applies more to you than me, because I've been explaining to you over and over again the difference between sticking to a tried and true formula and building on it, but for some reason it doesn't register with you that there's anything in between "tried and true formula" and "reinventing the wheel". That's your problem, not mine.
They've done new things like Galaxy in the past, but it's been ages since Galaxy and the series has been stagnant since. There's nothing wrong with taking a break from doing new things every so often, but we've had 6 games in a row that have done nothing and people are starting to get tired of it, the series is overdue for a step forward. And when you have an entire lineup of games releasing around the same time for the same system like we did for the Wii U in 2013? Then you have a harder time selling them and their console because there's no hook, what exactly entices you to spend $300 on a console that gives you the same experience as your $200 console, an experience that you may not want unless you're an obsessive fan of the series that likes repetition (which really isn't that much, as this generation proved). So the rehashing really isn't doing them any favors right about now.
And no, I've never said that about MK8 in my life. You must be confusing me with someone else.
@John_Enigma
If it means NX has a closer architecture to the PC and other consoles it makes great business/financial sense, plus they can port/remaster the best bits of the Wii U library and if it sells more than Wii U, that means more £$€£$€
@Bolt_Strike
Again, bias. Extreme bias. Just like a lot of people. Nintendo just can't do right.
What is there to entice people to buy a PS4? What is there to entice people to buy an XboxOne? What is so different about their lineup of games? You've been conveniently ignoring this question all along. If Nintendo's "weak" library of "unimaginative rehashes" isn't good, then what do the other consoles have to offer?
@John_Enigma
Hopefully not, Sony are taking the proverbial with that. Though Nintendo aren't renowned for being too generous with VC prices (8.99 for an N64 game vs 11.99 for a PS2 game vs 17.99 for a Wii game) though they at least included Backwards Compatibility and a reduced price upgrade path.
@Vandy
You're quoting the wrong person talking about MK8.
As for the N64 V Wii U debate, my personal opinion is that when it comes to Nintendo's own games there isn't much in it, but once you factor in Rares output and the third-party support it got (limited, but with some crackers e.g. Silicon Valley, ISS, Top Gear Rally 2, Shadowman, Turok, Rocket) the N64 has a much better library. I'm not sure if that's what you lot are debating anymore though, so I'm just going to say my piece and tiptoe away....
@electrolite77
Yeah I realized that afterwards. Both of the trolls have the same nonsensical biased opinions.
Most 'Nintendo-players' will get the NX no-matter-what because of Pikmin 4 etc. Ports of WiiU-titles will mostly be to get others who don't already own a WiiU to jump over to Nintendo.
@Vandy you have never really played a call of duty in ages if you say that....
@Vandy you have never really played a call of duty in ages if you say that....
@Bolt_Strike you arevery rightin what you are saying and it is sad to see that on this site, every time someone tries a constructive critic on Nintendo, is a troll, a dudebro or has no taste...
The crucial point, imho, is that in a brand new console lineup you shouldn t have a "more of the same" NSMBU... It does not help to differenciate the new console with what comes in the past. You need something new with a wow factor in it, and another 2d mario is not, is actually very boring.
Concerning "supposed" repetition in other franchises, they simply sell very well anyhow. 2D Mario doesn't, anymore....
@arnoldlayne83
Except I've played every single Call of Duty game in the franchise.
I may be defending Nintendo here, but that doesn't mean I don't have a massive library of games and pretty much every game system released. And every other FPS game that has the same gameplay as Call of Duty.
"Another 2D Mario" does not help to differentiate the new console? Well, same goes for PS3 and PS4. Launch titles for PS3 included Call of Duty, Madden and NBA. Launch titles for PS4 included Call of Duty, Madden and NBA. I'm not seeing the "wow" factor in that one either.
A quote from you: "Concerning "supposed" repetition in other franchises, they simply sell very well anyhow. 2D Mario doesn't, anymore...."
That's funny.
#1 best-selling Nintendo DS game: New Super Mario Bros.
#3 best-selling Nintendo 3DS game: Super Mario 3D Land
#5 best-selling Nintendo 3DS game: New Super Mario Bros. 2
#4 best-selling Nintendo Wii game: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
#3 best-selling Nintendo Wii U game: New Super Mario Bros. U
#4 best-selling Nintendo Wii U game: Super Mario 3D World
Unless you have insider information that Shigeru Miyamoto bought all the copies himself to rig the numbers?
I'm really tired of feeding the trolls here. I'm checking out of this. Really, the only victims here are the people so closed-minded and affected by bias that they are incapable of enjoying all of the fantastic games that the Wii U has provided them with. Your loss, friends.
@Vandy ps4 have VARIETY... A word long gone from nintendo world....
As for feeding the trolls, i own a wiiu and I played a lot of games on it, i particularly enjoyed Rayman, Bayo 1 and 2, TW101, 3D world, Tekken Tag, smash, hyrule warriors among others.
It just got stale after the first year and a half, when it become clear that third parties flew away and Nintendo main worry was making uninspired port/rehashed carbon copies of old franchise and selling us amiibos in every possible way...
If this machine isn't backwards compatible and the launch line-up is mostly Wii U/3DS ports I expect it to bomb spectacularly. Why on earth would I buy the same content again, even if slightly enhanced?
@arnoldlayne83
I edited my previous post to address your ridiculous statement of Mario games "not selling well anymore".
Looks like it's still a winning formula to me.
@Vandy then you see the decline on Nintendo console numbers and you ask yourself why.
Of course it will keep selling on people that consider a huge step forward the ability to jump higher on the same platforms.... Lol.
@Vandy
Your opinions carry bias too. Everybody's do. That doesn't make you a troll. As soon as somebody has to start resorting to calling others a troll for having a different opinion it looks like they're struggling.
@Sean_Aaron
There has to be new stuff also, but they'd be mad not to remaster the cream of the Wii U crop.
As @Spideron said:
'Most 'Nintendo-players' will get the NX no-matter-what because of Pikmin 4 etc. Ports of WiiU-titles will mostly be to get others who don't already own a WiiU to jump over to Nintendo'
@electrolite77
Everyone's opinions carry some form of bias, sure. But there's a difference between vehemently backing up your claims with that bias and actually presenting facts.
I don't use my personal opinions as arguments, I use facts that are widely available to anyone with access to the internet. That's the difference.
And it also takes 2 seconds to skim through a user's post history and realize they are, in fact, a troll.
I wonder if the NX Smash Bros will be an update of the Wii U version.
More endless speculation. Just when you think you're out....they pull you back in!
I can think of so many franchises that Bandai Namco could be putting together for the NX, though many of them are just hopeful dreams.
If anything, I hope they are new games rather than ports as it would help boost launch sales. Unfortunately outside of the Nintendo faithful, the console wouldn't sell on name alone; it requires exclusive games that would make people jump to it.
Although if it does launch with a Smash Bros, it most likely would be an enhancement (or at most a variation) of the recent Wii U release due to time constraints.
Well I guess my hopes of a 2017 launch have been dashed. Oh well, impress me Nintendo!
If its just an updated Version of the WiiU game then .. maybe haha depends on whats added of course, all the DLC would not be enough to raise my interest tbh
A brand new one Smash Bros that would be nice
It would be logical to port the Wii U version, since the install base for Wii U is so small, there are plenty of people who never played the game. So for them it is a new game.
Handheld NX + Wii U version with all DLC, I suspect
Yeah, no way will there be a new Smash at NX launch. Faaaaaar to early. It may be a enhanced version of Smash Wii u though, with all the dlc included (as is already mentioned in the article).
Haha i've already spent so much money on that game...the wii u game, the 3DS game, the gamecube adapter, gamecube controller, 30 odd amiibo..hey why not buy it again!!
Personally, I think that a definitive edition of the game with all the DLC (and maybe all stages and modes from both the 3DS and WiiU versions) would be a great idea on Nintendo's part; the series was extremely popular on the GC and Wii, so I bet it would entice many people who decided to skip the WiiU to take the plunge and buy the new console. If they can add in a couple more WiiU and 3DS remasters/ports, a few third-party titles, some new entries of tried-and-true franchises (Pikmin, Zelda, Metroid, Mario) and (hopefully) a few inexpensive VC titles (brownie points if it's GC games) near launch, they'll have hit jackpot. I know it's an unlikely scenario, but a girl can dream.
I'd like to see Super Smash Bros for NX, a port of for 3DS/Wii U with the stages from both in high definition, all DLC characters and costumes, maybe some extra costumes (which shouldn't require Sakurai's input unlike a character) and more events. Plus Smash Run's inclusion.
@Vandy
Don't bother arguing with him. Just look at his trophies list
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/my/public-trophies/
And this guy complains about rehash. He's either a big hypocrite or a dumb consumer who repeat what the competitor with the biggest marketing wallet tells him: "Nintendo is evil and only rehash and Sony is new fresh original and has the best game for every genre possible because the ads say so" lol
@zool My entire post was about Smash not necessarily NEEDING to sell a console to be worth releasing, IF it can sell itself (and, of course, if there are other games that CAN sell the console). The NX does need games that will sell it, but not every game needs to be one of them. I wrote this explicitly twice, and even so you brought up whether or not 'Smash sells consoles', which I argue is a moot point providing that the development costs are small enough to not divert resources away from titles that WOULD sell the NX.
It would be NICE if Smash4NX could sell consoles, and as @PlywoodStick points out, the series has sold consoles in the past (meaning that there could be many potential customers who skipped the Wii U), but it does not NEED to in order to be worth releasing. Smash4NX would already be at least 95% complete, and the extra 5% development would undoubtably be worth whatever sales it achieved, as well as make the NX line-up more robust and enticing to players who skipped the Wii U. Of course, that means the NX line-up also needs games that give people who skipped the Wii U a reason not to do the same with the NX, but that's another topic. Smash may even be enough to tip some people would want 'Launch Game A' and 'Launch Game B' and 'never played that Smash game for the Wii U' over the edge.
If Nintendo managed to sell a Mario-themed lollipop with every NX, it would still make a profit from it. That doesn't mean the lollipop is replacing NX games, or becoming a core part of Nintendo's launch strategy, but if it sells, it sells.
Let me put this another way; what would Nintendo stand to lose from releasing a comprehensive Smash4NX port? What downsides are there? And unless you can back up claims that the game would 'replace' other titles, or soak up significant resources (despite being essentially already made), please don't use them in your argument.
Now that I've scrolled my way down, I'd like to tell you all: don't hold your breathe for a new smash. It's just not realistic considering how "new" this smash is. As many people have stated, dlc is still getting put in smash4, as smash games have been made 6 years apart. Expect(if we're lucky) one in 2020 but it might be even longer because of additions with DLC for this one
I don't know why people are expecting the NX to be a handheld when it has been referenced on many occasions by Nintendo that it is a home console.
@Vandy The XboxOne and PS4, though their current line-up is questionable at the moment, they have two big things the Wii U doesn't have. One is support from other developers and two is the hardware capabilities to handle the games being released for the next 5-8 years, if not more. That is where a lot of the incentive for people to buy those consoles over the Wii U come from. The Wii U in general just isn't developer friendly for this generation because of it's limitations and gimmicky hardware. The other thing about those systems, is though they also have those "rehashes," they also have a wide variety of types of games to play where Nintendo, is a bit more limited. For example, there isn't much for racing except for well... Mario Kart and then recently, Neo Fast racing. Need for speed in there I guess but there is a lot less and your choices are limited. Same with sports, shooters, jRPGs (though, this one is only starting to grow now), etc., it is just the other two consoles offer much more choice when it comes to choosing the games you want now and up coming. Also, keep in mind that I am mostly talking about home consoles here.
@HyperSonicEXE I don't think your point is a valid one. All your aspects except antigravity were introduced in Mario Kart 7, that had a great success. Not to say that coins were introduced since the first Super Mario Kart. Having more depth helps the game, as it increases the replayability value, which is fundamental for online games whose online community would otherwise become empty after a few weeks.
In fact, in the Mario Kart games released before Mario Kart Wii manual charged Mini-Turbo is quite common, and that is way more difficult for beginners. I furthermore think that SMK and MKSC on the other hand are quite difficult to play (especially the first one) and have coins. And of course, Mini-turbo in those games are hard to release, and there are many New Boost Techniques that can be unleashed in both. Being beginner-friendly and having deep game mechanics or weird physics to be exploited are not always one against the other, the best games manage to do both.
@bitleman the only dumb thing here is you comment.... But I am not surprised at all... Nintendo zealots always go personal ehen they have nothing clever to say
So the next Smash will be "Super Smash Bros for WiiU for NX"?
I can't imagine this being anything other than a port. This would certainly by them some time for the next Smash. My only concern as fans go would be those that have already purchased Smash with all of the DLC. I wonder if the cross buy with characters on 3DS and Wii U would go ahead and include the NX.
I am interested to see what else they will have for us. I do think this story helps to solidify the idea that at least some portion of the NX will be available this year. It doesn't make sense to be working on porting a title from 2014 that would come out any later than this year.
Wow the trolls really are out in full force on this thread. Declaring things as 'dead' and unquestionably 'terrible' and 'the worst yet' just because they don't like it, and then trying to make someone feel bad for thinking the opposite. When did this site become such a hick-dive? :/
@Yorumi you can have Mario tattoed on your chest or spend 100% of your free time playong COD online, I don't care and I consider you as a person who shares a great hobby with me and I am willing to discuss. But for someone here if you don't like something conceived by Nintendo you have obviously no taste in life.... The less people play Nintendo games the more this is becoming an elitist club for the "pure arian Nintendo lover" race....
@Yorumi wow I have checked your trophies list! You are an institution on jrpg!!!! XD
Ok, i allow you to call me "dumb mainstream" gamer then!
Ps: XCX is such an amazing gigantic game.... Could youborrow me some free time to playit?
@Maxz Either way yet another Smash Bros game is not a good idea so soon.
Every game released with the NX needs to be a game gamers will buy the the NX just to play it.
If Nintendo have 10 killer games on launch date and a few other including Smash Bros. then I guess it doesn't much matter about its release. Other than many will question why so many Smash Bros games. Like the glut of Super Mario Bros games we had when the Wii U launched.
@Mister_Wu
I'm not saying to get rid of the drift boost. But since new players are finding that jumping into turns is unintuitive, it might be worth it to only use an altered automatic mode from MKWii.
And I'm not saying to necessarily get rid of unlockable Karts, either. But, since there are always balance issues, it's time to do away with karts parts and the individual stats, and go back to focusing on only three weight classes. This way, karts can make a light character heavy, or a medium character light, and so on. That way, you can play whoever you like, you can be any weight class you want, and Nintendo should be able to balance between three weight classes.
To be sure, MK8's Battle Mode could use some more choices. Like arenas, like a non-elimination mode, turning CPU players off, etc. MK7 might have sold well enough, But the critical reception of it has been mild at best. And it's warranted, it's a fairly mediocre game.
@HyperSonicEXE Well, the automatic drifting with Super-Mini-turbo boosts is already in place in MK8 (even though it looks like skidding):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjerQ1zy2oc
It also has better angular velocity when you're using inward drifting bikes:
http://mkboards.com/forums/threads/angular-velocity-in-steady-state-drifting-and-skidding.21115/
Also, every Mario Kart game had the weight distinction based on characters, from Super Mario Kart to Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii, so what you suggest is something different, more akin to what is being done in Mario Kart 7 and 8.
Finally, the critical reception of MK7 is positive, as Metacritic and GameRanking show:
http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/mario-kart-7
http://www.gamerankings.com/3ds/997822-mario-kart-7/index.html
@Mister_Wu
Well that would have been nice to know! Geez, they completely took out the Automatic option, so everyone I know figured that was gone. Thanks for that!
Yes, and they've had these one or two clear-best setups since. And MK8 has several weight classes, not 3.
You can't just flash up reviews and say a game doesn't have issues.
I'm sure Hideki Konno would still disagree with any of our most well-reasoned points, just because that's how everyone's perceptions work. And he's got more data than we do!
@arnoldlayne83
So when I point out your complaints about Nintendo for their rehash and the lack of variety of genres also apply to Sony you just call me a "Nintendo zealot"?
I like Sony. I own a Ps4 and a Vita. But Sony fanboys are by far the worst and the most uneducated. They're the most dangerous for videogames too since they want a monopoly and all the competitors to be the same so everyone plays the same thing. Kinda ironic for people talking about variety...
@bitleman ooooooooook.....
A few possibilities stick out to me.
First, there is the likely Deluxe version of SSB4, with all the DLC and some extras attached. That wouldn't be enough to require Sakurai's oversight, but could be a good deal. Take the Wii U version, throw in the DLC stages and characters, update some 3DS-exclusive and retro stages, throw in some more modes like alternatives to Classic, and you have a decent method of filling an early gap in the NX library.
Alternatively, say the NX launches in 2017. By that point, it would be a three year gap since SSB4, a longer gap than Melee had. That is enough time to make a sequel. That said, Sakurai's lack of visible distress suggests that he is not as involved in the project if this is true. Could Sakurai work on another project while merely overseeing SSB5?
As for what a fifth game would bring, I'm not worried about a lack of new characters or games to represent. That Smash Ballot thing probably was also used to see which characters garnered interest for the long run, and we'll have three years of new Nintendo games to work with. Part of me is hoping that a bit of work s put into remaking and distinguishing characters like Ganondorf, Ness, Lucina, etc.
@HyperSonicEXE My point was about the "critical reception" you mentioned, this term usually refers to the reviews collected by GameRankings and MetaCritic. Of course, it is very often different from the user perception and an high rated game can still have flaws. I don't have the game, so I cannot do a personal critical analysis.
There are many weight classes in MK7 and MK8, and while in 200cc things are more balanced, in 150cc the clearly are not with the Heavyweight characters being favored. I agree that having more variety of characters is positive and that is a problem in Mario Kart Wii, where 2 combiantions have a clear advantage and are almost always used online. So MK7 and MK8 are already an improvement, with Mario Kart: Double Dash!! being possibly even better. I still think a better balancing would ultimately be a better choice than just having all the characters with the same stats (even though the second method always works, while the first is not always guaranteeed to work), 200cc has showed that this is not entirely impossible, even though maybe we're not there yet.
@Mister_Wu
Well, just from my numerous conversations and critiques on massive imageboards and forums online, MK7 was fairly solid but a bit lacking. I have to agree with that, but then, I've played this series since the first. By comparison, a new player wouldn't know "what's good" or not, and might think the level of content is fine.
An improvement, perhaps, but still susceptible. I'm really surprised this wasn't stamped out after MKWii. I imagine balancing the weight classes is harder than it looks, sure, but shrinking the weights from 7-8 to 3 has got to make the process easier.
@HyperSonicEXE It certainly is easier to balance with only three weight classes, we'll see if the developers will return to them or if they will just try to improve the existing systems of MK7 and MK8.
@Yorumi I simply come at it from a much different perspective. You damn the console because issues Nintendo has zero control over (third parties not bringing games). I applaud Nintendo for the herculean effort they have made to put content on two consoles simultaneously while diversifying into genres/areas they are not entirely comfortable in, and all the while reaching out to third parties to allow them access to valuable IP because they want to provide you with diverse content. You gumble because of what isn't, focusing on the negative. I choose to enjoy what is, focusing on the positive.
I also think you cast the GameCube in Rose-colored light. The Gamecube had a OoT with boats, OoT with wolves, Mario 64 with watergun, Smash 64 rehash, F-Zero 64 rehash, Star Fox does Zelda, Star Fox 64 Rehash, Metroid does 3D, Mario Kart 64 now with two people, no DK, no Kid Icarus, Animal Forest (literally a N64 game) released on Gamecube, Luigi's Mansion (which no one liked on release), Pikmin 1 & 2, Donkey Konga (Nintendo does Guitar Hero), Eternal Darkness (Nintendo didn't own Fatal Frame then), Paper Mario with better graphics, Wave Racer strikes again, 1080 now with more slopes, Kirby races for you, Pokemon RPG done via corridors, oh... Now I understand, you really think Pokemon TV was the innovation.
Again, the difference you remember is that the absent third parties actually did publish stuff on the console. Nintendo has always done what it has done on the Wii U.
@Yorumi
Please recommend me kart racers, brawlers, 2D/3D platformers, open world JRPG, hunting games, 3D beat them'up on PS4
And only recommend me games that sell well. Or that means they're boring and people aren't interested by them according to a previous post from arnoldlayne83 you agreed with
@zool No, not every game released with the NX needs to be a game gamers will buy the the NX just to play.
Releasing with 10 games that gamers will buy the NX just to play is not somehow better than releasing with 11 games, 10 of which gamers will buy the NX just to play and 1 of which they won't.
Quality is important. Quantity is important. Averages are not. Providing there are enough peaks, and the peaks are sufficiently high, the troughs become irrelevant.
With regards to it being 'another Smash game', Super Smash Bros for NX wouldn't be any more a sequel to Smash for Wii U than Smash for Wii U was a sequel to Smash for 3DS. The analogy to NSMB doesn't work because each of those titles was meant to be a fresh, exciting new game, when in reality they grew progressively more stale. A closer (though still far from perfect) analogy would be the release of Twilight Princess on both Gamecube and Wii. There was the Gamecube game, and there was the Wii version, which had some extra bells and whistles. The Wii version a wasn't a sequel so no one complained about it being 'another Zelda game', because it wasn't. It was 'the same' Zelda game with a few extra doodads.
Smash4NX would allow players who didn't get the Wii U version to hop in, allow players who didn't buy all the DLC to get the whole package in one go, and allow players who DID get all the DLC to... err, feel a bit ripped off, but ultimately allow them to keep playing Smash (which they're clearly fond of) on their current gen console, and also give them all the content from 3DS version on the big screen.
Given the colossal benchmark set by Smash 4 and Mr. Sakurai's unwillingness to immediately jump to work on a brand new game, either the NX gets a shiny, comprehensive version of Smash 4, or it doesn't get a Smash game for many, many years to come, if ever. Smash was the best selling game on the Gamecube, and the 3rd best selling game on the Wii of what can be considered staple 'Nintendo Franchises' (i.e. discounting Wii Sports, Fit, and Play titles). It outsold Galaxy 1, 2, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Metroid, and... well, everything else except Mario Kart and NSMB (and the aforementioned 'Wii' bunch).
That's a pretty stark decision facing the Big N, and I wouldn't be surprised if having spent the resources incrementally growing Smash 4, they'd like the see the package go the distance and continue selling copies on the NX.
@Yorumi
Learn to read. I never said Nintendo didn't lack variety. I'm just saying Sony is far from being the heaven fanboys claim they are because the marketing said so. Some genres only survive thanks to Nintendo. If Nintendo disappear those genres will die, which means less variety in gaming and you can be sure Sony will stop funding those cheaply made games no one care just to give ammo to their fanboys (do you really think Playsation all Stars Battle showed any respect to the Playstation brand?)
Also saying Bloodborne is a hunting game... lol. I'm waisting my time arguing with someone who doesn't know what he is talking about. Go back playing pokemon.
When will they learn....
@Darknyht I am afraid that you miss the point entirely. The point is that Nintendo has done the same software on every console since the NES, and that since the N64 the majority of the games are pretty much the same game with something slightly changed gameplay wise. OoT, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (and even Skyward Sword) are identical games put in slightly modified wrappers. All of them follow the same gameplay mechanics and progression. Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and even Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are the same games with different gimmicks when you get down to it. Metroid has used the same progression in every game ever released, the only difference being that the Gamecube ones game you a first person view instead of a 2D one. F-Zero is the same game with different courses and Wave Racer was just a pretty tech demo to show off the new water effects (as was the original). Mario Kart has not really changed since the SNES days, yet you praise the GC one while smearing the Wii U version. Every console Nintendo releases walks the same path with software from Nintendo with a few variations on the tune. To criticize one Nintendo console on that issue inevitably points back to the exact same flaw in the others.
As for the third party support, how exactly did Nintendo cause EA to decide to push half-hearted ports of old (by gaming standards) software? Did Nintendo force Ubisoft to stop developing for the console or was it the fact that the product Ubisoft sold was inferior on the console and consumers recognized it as such? The same with Activision. Did Nintendo likewise cause the third parties not to play to the strengths of the console, or market properly to the demographic that purchased the console? Was it Nintendo's responsibility to ensure their success? I've pointed out before the insanity of EA not putting The Sims or SimCity on the Wii U, and the other two for doing similarly stupid things. Or do you have the twisted belief (like they seem to) that Nintendo should be shoveling truckloads of cash into their offices so that the emperors will grace the Wii U with their presence as Microsoft and Sony do?
@Vandy I've never praised Microsoft and Sony for innovating, you're just assuming that because I haven't discussed them (or you're just confusing me for someone else again). Yes, they're just as guilty as Nintendo, if not more so. The only reason I haven't brought them up is because they're not relevant to the conversation.
@Maxz I understand what you are saying, but, we may be looking at this from a different view point.
In order for any game to sell well on a new console, the consoles have to sell in vast numbers, something the Wii U never managed to do. There were a few reasons for this but the very first mistake was a very poor launch line up with no killer game. A game that will make gamers want to buy the console just to play the game. Smash Bros is not that game.
I played Smash Bros on the 3ds and did not like it, screen to small. It isca game for the BIG screen. If in the next year I wanted to play SB I would buy the Wii U version. If it were released as just another game for the NX, number 11, I would ask why another SB (has Amiibos something to do with it?) When we could have a new Wave Race or a game we haven't seen for a good few years.
The only way I see SSB being a "launch" title is if SSB4 is ported, or, they are referring to another entry in the series (like a remaster and re-release of Melee or Brawl). There is no way in [expletive]-sake SSB5 will be available. I don't even think it's a twinkle in Sakurai's eye at this point.
@Darknyht You're looking at similarity waaaay too broadly. Just because two games share the same core formula doesn't mean they're a rehash. There's a huge difference in how games like Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, OoT, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker approached sequels as opposed to more recent games like NSMB, 3D World, and Tropical Freeze. In the former category, they take from the core formula but they add to it or put a major twist on it, it feels like the next evolution in the series. Whereas with the latter, they keep the gameplay mainly the same and at most throw in a gimmick, so it feels stagnant, as if it was the same game and new entries just feel like DLC of the last game. IDK why this is so hard for people here to understand.
@zool I certainly agree that the NX should launch with fresh, new, zingy games that will make gamers want to buy the console just to play them. And you're right, Smash Bros is not one of them.
Where we seems to differ is that I think Nintendo should launch the NX with fresh, new, zingy games that will make gamers want to buy the console just to play them... AND Smash Bros. And if not a release title, then certainly within a few months of launch.
The reason why I don't think it's too much to ask is that the game is already pretty much built. It's just a case of assembling, repackaging, and maybe slightly polishing the Wii U and 3DS versions.
Would I take rerelease of Smash 4 over a new Wave Race? Probably not. But the key difference is that Smash4NX wouldn't be 'new', and so wouldn't take up anywhere near the development time and resources that a Wave Race game built from the ground up. In fact, if Mr. Sakurai were really lazy, he could just port the game wholesale from the Wii U version with all the DLC on it, without so much as a change of menus.
It's for this reason I regard Smash4NX as almost a 'free' game; not in terms my own wallet, but for Nintendo. To answer your question:
"Why another SM, when we could have a new ____ or a game we haven't seen in a good few years?",
It would not be 'another Smash'. It would essentially be the same Smash. As a result, it is not comparable in terms of a development time/resources to a new ANYTHING. (Also, I don't own a single amiibo, so I don't have that as a vested interest)
I would love a new Wave Race, or better yet, a new F-Zero. But it we don't get them, I don't think "they released Smash instead" is any more of a justification of those games' absence than "they spent too much money on making Link's hair look pretty in the Zelda U".
It's this whole idea of "instead" I don't agree with. We're not getting a 'new' Smash; we're not getting 'another' Smash; we may or may not be getting a comprehensive version of the 'current' Smash, rereleased at launch of the NX. If so, I can't imagine how it will have any significant impact on the rest of the line up, similarly to how I don't think releasing Twilight Princess with the Wii was of any detriment to the Wii's lineup. The game was already built, and it would be foolish to suggest that Mr. Aonuma and his team could have made something new and significant in the time it took to simply port TP from Gamecube onto Wii. It was either Twilight Princess on Wii, or not. After finishing the DLC on Smash 4, Mr. Sakurai is not going to have enough time to make something brand new for the NX launch. Either we get Smash4NX, or we get nothing in its place.
I think I know which would be more profitable.
@electrolite77 Good point.
@Maxz I will concede and agree that a new Smash Bros sometime in the first few months of launch would be good and agree that a launch game that is fresh and new is needed. Even a twist on an existing franchise. Mario boats. Mario Pilotwings.
Although my thoughts are that some new Wii U games will be announced and the NX is no more than a portable gamepad with a few twists.
@Yorumi 286 and 289: you nailed it.
But as far as I can see conversating with a brick wall would be more constructive...
@Bolt_Strike Zelda - collect three things to unlock something so you can collect 5-8 things before facing the boss. Expect a water, fire, wind, air, light theme.
Mario - complete 5 various tasks to collect coins/stars/red coins in each stage until you have collected enough to face the final boss.
Metroid - collect equipment that grants you access to more areas and progresses the story
Pokemon - catch 100+ monsters on your way to get the gym badges to win the pokemon championship
Animal Crossing - Sell anything not bolted down to Tom Nook to earn bells to pay off your debt while indulging your inner shopaholic nature.
Star Fox - Big Bad attacks planet, leading Star Fox on a multi-planet crusade to kill Big Bad.
Fire Emblem - Fight through various scenarios where you go from scrappy underdog to ultimate warrior. (Applies to Advance Wars)
Donkey Kong - Someone angered you and now "DK Smash"
Yoshi - Must randomly throw poop/eggs (depends on your point of view) at everything in anything in hopes to find all the collectables.
Xenoblade - Spend the rest of your life trying to find a random blue item that happens to be the correct random blue item, then repeat 4-20 more times to complete quest. (ok, that is an oversimplification but covers a lot of the padding).
Mario Kart - Everyone races because that's what we do. Tracks change, gameplay remains the same
Smash - new challengers, same game
Mario Golf - new courses, same game
Mario Tennis - New stadiums, same game
Paper Mario - slightly different story, but you will collect 7 things on your way to defeat the boss while using the exact same combat system developed for the first game.
Wario Ware - Here is the latest batch of controller throw inducing mini-games
Mario Party - New boards, same uninspired gameplay
So, exactly how did I oversimplify? The core gameplay for Nintendo games has been the same for a while. They all have relied on gimmicks or graphics to make them seem different. But guess what, everyone in the industry does it.
@Darknyht You're not taking into account what kind of impact the unique gameplay features or gimmicks have on the gameplay. The gameplay mechanics they introduced in older games had more impact, with older games you had mechanics and gimmicks that were integrated into the entire game, whereas now they're mainly just occasional gimmicks that only come into play in certain situations. Mario's powerups are only really useful in certain levels. DK character abilities aren't utilized much in the level design. Things like Mega Eggdozers and Hypernova are only once a level. So because these gimmicks and mechanics are less frequent in the gameplay, the game is more bare and the core formula is exposed, making the game feel more repetitive.
@Bolt_Strike I don't disagree, but the argument was that Nintendo did something vastly different in how they built games. They really didn't. The games have the same foundation, it is just that the gimmicks/graphic jumps are not as profound. There are a lot of times that Nintendo is just checking off the boxes, but again that has happened for a while now.
Now on the positive, they are trying to change. Splatoon was a vastly different approach to a game for them. Mario Maker has pretty much destroyed expectations for a 2D Mario and provided people with tools to create some amazing things. Mario Kart and Smash DLC was them trying to figure out how to best use the tool.
@Darknyht That's the thing though, they have to build the game around these gimmicks and gameplay mechanics. The levels have to work around your new abilities, and when they do, it provides more depth to the gameplay.
@Bolt_Strike The problem with the Wii U was that the main gimmick (the gamepad) fell flat because most people couldn't experience it as intended (couch co-op) and there was no concession to the realities of western online gaming culture. The games are designed well if that gimmick is taken into consideration, but without that there is a lot of shallow gameplay. Eventually they realized this and have better designed the games to account for the culture differences. Those games have performed much better, but the games aren't necessarily the issue (although propeller hats are pretty uninspired and frankly dumb).
It was an issue in the Wii generation with best shown with NSMB Wii and co-op play. While 3D World addresses the technical issues of co-op play (drag you along bubbles and more space to move) without dealing with the culture issues (online vs couch co-op). Most people never actually use NSMBU's gimmick, the gamepad placed platforms. Personally, I ignored NSMBU and bought the much fresher feeling and more enjoyable NSLU as a standalone game.
@Darknyht This has little to do with my point. They can introduce creative mechanics regardless of whether or not the console gimmick is good. Hell, the Gamecube had no gimmick and it still had creative games like Sunshine and Wind Waker.
I'm starting to hate the NX. I'm tired of all this unconfirmed info floating around and people in general (Swear I'm not hating on anyone specifically from this site: not staff, contributors, or fellow users who post comments) acting like it's completely legit. I saw an article posted on a different news site about an analyst who THINKS that Nintendo should release a new handheld system this fall so Nintendo can boost the holiday sales, and people in comments acted like it was a formal announcement straight from Nintendo.
Maybe the enhancement can throw in the Ice Climbers, given they were finished on the Wii U version and failed on the 3DS version. So, I want to say they have a concept that is ready to be made into a fighter and it would barely take any time if they worked with their Brawl versions, tweaked a few things here and there for Sm4sh's speed and released them for the NX version.
Hopefully the NX won't launch with ports of Wii u games alone! There must be at least one very cool, NEW game from Nintendo!!
Play Nice

@arnoldlayne83
You were the first one to claim a company was perfect and didn't have flaw. The definition of a fanboy. Then you complained about some other fanboys you imagined. And you got snapped when someone pointed out your hypocrisy. Sorry. Yeah sure conversating with a brick wall would be easier for you
@Mister_Wu
By the way, I tested out auto drift-boost.
It's about half as effective as jumping.
Which, hey, is a good start, but let's see MK9 automatically give the player the jump turn radius and the full drift-boost accrual without jumping.
But, cool to see.
@Darknyht As soon as you start trying to cannibalize and discredit history like that, just to prove a point, that's when reason has left you.
I hope Tekken 7 comes to the NX!
I believe it if and ONLY IF, it's a complete edition. A new one.... nope. As far as the "several" other NX titles, good. NX will need all of the help it can get.
@Bolt_Strike I know it is an old topic, but I've spent most of my time on the road for work lately. There is the gimmick of the console (be it as simple as better graphics, such as with the GameCube, although connectivity cords come to mind also) and there is also a Gimmick in the games themselves.
Mario Sunshine had the gimmick of the water cannon which all the puzzles were designed around. That made it different than Mario 64. Wind Waker had the boat and ocean exploration, which really was the only thing different than OoT.
It`s more likely going to be a enhanced port of smash for wii u.Given the fact that it only been out for almost 2 years and that it`s too soon for a whole new smash game.The port probably will contain some new features including a story mode and maybe they'll thrown in about 3 or 4 newcomers in the mix.If that happens then i'll buy it but if not then it will be a total disappointment.
well In my opinion I don't think they will add that many newcomers like one I feel like they would focus more on vets like ice climbers and wolf since they can save more newcomers for smash 5 ice climbers and wolf would make the game feel complete for me so I hope by e3 they show the game and hopefully it comes with more stages from past games and 1 newcomer and ice climbers and wolf cause I will buy the nx day one if it happens
@DoctorOverbuild I would LOVE it if they added a story mode. I really want them add one similar to the SSE in SSBB, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up (Although I can't help it).
@REWlego The cutscenes would be pure amazing!
