The snappily-titled Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be an interesting arrival in 2016. The series has evidently been popular to date, but seeing how the latest entry fares in the current generation will be worth following; Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games was only on Wii U and didn't seem to achieve much sales success.
Nintendo has released a couple of videos to showcase the 3DS version of the upcoming title; it's also coming to Wii U, but Nintendo is evidently more keen to promote the portable iteration. It gives a good look at various events, including their Mario-esque twists, and also includes footage of multiplayer action, StreetPass functionality and Miis. A separate video also shows amiibo unlocking new Mii outfits.
Is this a game you're looking out for in 2016?

It is no longer coming on Wii U, the official site (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/bgxj/index.html) clearly state that it is "available on Nintendo 3DS" and not on Wii U. So, unless they just stopped working on it altogether, this could be the first NX launch title confirmed!
@Mister_Wu Or....it could simply mean that as of now, the game is first releasing on the 3DS and then the Wii U. It doesn't say anywhere that the Wii U release is cancelled.
As for the game itself, it looks average at best. Don't see the whole point of the game being made by SEGA knowing that they have a bad reputation of bringing poor quality games.
I got London games on 3DS and Its really not all that fun. Not a series worth checking out in my opinion.
I think it looks interesting, just the fact it has Soccer and Golf in it (hopefully without motion controls on the gamepad) makes it a little appealing to me.
@Socar I think you are right, since at least SEGA still mentions this version: https://sega.jp/topics/151209_arcade_1/
This silence, though, is quite surprising nonetheless.
Is that Sticks?
Oh dear..
Also, in a world where horses and anthromorphic creatures can co-exist.
Perhaps edit the title to clarify it's 3DS footgage. Looks good though.
Getting this for my son and I. I love Mario & Sonic games.
I know it's wrong, but I'm slightly hyped for this game given the addition of the Koopalings. I had a feeling they would be added to the roster when one of the Deadly Six was shown in the game's first trailer.
Looks pretty fun, but that amiibo support literally looks pay to win. I'm not liking that.
No "Summer" in the title?
We got the latest Wii U game and played it once. It was worth the $17.99 for the blue Wii mode Plus.
If I was gonna any version it would be 3DS anyway.
The last Wii U game needed wiimotes to play which I find is just ridiculous. How can a game for current gen hardware need a controller from last generation to play.
The Wii U version is still mentioned on the Japanese Nintendo release list, but not for February like the 3DS version. It just has a general 2016 release next to it.
I like how they expanded the roster significantly for both series, even if it's within an admittedly lack-luster olympics experience. Although I did enjoy the hell out of M&S at the Winter Olympics on DS. I just might pick it up! 👍🏻
These games are always fine, they're just decent 'mario party style' games but featuring Sonic and is based around sports. Plus they are much better than current Mario party games. I will say the amiibo support is poor though; other than that, its a decent game to spend the summer over.
Can't wait for this game! Day one purchase for me already! I'm loving the amount of playable characters; looking forward to using characters that usually aren't playable in many games, like Jet the Hawk, or some of the Koopalings.
Not quite sold on the 3DS one, but I'll be getting the Wii U one. I love these games. They get better and better with each release.
Also I can't wait to play as Sticks! (About the only thing I liked about Sonic Boom.)
@SuperWiiU Perhaps for a change they're releasing it closer to the actual event for better sales and not mentioning it much so people buy the 3DS version first instead of just going for the Wii U version.
Or it could be in development hell for all we know, who knows... XD
@rjejr : I downloaded it as my bonus game with Mario Kart 8 and I regretted it almost instantly. I'd much rather have downloaded a frequently-played game that I already had a physical copy of, which I think speaks volumes about the quality of the Mario and Sonic series. It was an absolute mess. Sitting through tutorials for EVERY. SINGLE. ACTIVITY. become frustrating fast, especially when they ran as long as they did, and the controls were not as straightforward or as intuitive as they should be for games like these.
The motions should all be simple or straightforward enough so that anybody can grasp them almost immediately with little instruction. That's where the Wii Sports and Mario Party games excelled.
@Spin You know, Bowser Jr. couldn't ride anything in Mario Kart 8, so he went riding a horse instead...
as for Larry Koopa, well, he just loves riding bikes, to the point that he is one of the two characters with a separate glider trick when riding inward drifting bikes! Evidently the most important point for him anyway is riding, so there he goes with horses!
On the other hand, Eggman got bored of mechanical things and went organical this time, while Blaze took "Right Here, Ride On" a bit too literally...
I'd really like to know who is actually buying these games? I have the London one, (because ASDA were selling it for £5, sealed) and I found it to be... not very good. Once you have tried one, why would you want another?
I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you want to make money out of a Sonic and Mario license then make it a platformer.
@sillygostly All I remember is no Balance Board support, which was the best part of Shaun White Road Trip skiing game on the Wii. And one of those Rabbids games. Maybe I'll play it this winter to see what is there myself, I just watched my kid play it the one time.
Yeah forget this game, at least for 3DS. M&S at the 2012 Olympics on 3DS was ridiculously difficult for me. I might look into the WiiU version of this one though.
@kobashi100 Not sure if serious. Wiimote Plus is still (and probably will be for a long time) the best option for sport games, motion and pointer based in particular.
Hey Nintendo Life, could you maybe NOT block the "watch later" button in the embeds? That would make my life so much easier reading your articles on my phone
@andrea987 but that is not my argument. I never doubted the quality of the wiimote controller.
The fact is that it is still a controller for a last gen machine. Software for the Wii U should not be made to work with last generation controller only.
Yes have it as an option but the only way to play. That is ridiculous.
When has there ever been a time where games for a current gen console only worked with last gen hardware. It's unheard of!
If they go down that route with the NX then I will laugh even more. Imagine it Only works with hardware that is two generations old and think how crazy that is.
@kobashi100 So you're stuck in 'Gen' mode, eh? If something is better, use it, who cares if it's 1,2 or 3 gens ago? Heck, people complained 'cause Nintendo didn't make WiiU compatible with GC controllers, when SSB came out, they even made the adapter for it! I don't have the Sonic Olympic game for WiiU, anyway, so I can't tell you whether the wiimote was the best choice for any single game, and yes, there should always be different control options, but the 'Gen' reasoning is just wrong, sorry. Cannot justify it one bit.
I liked the first two but barely played the second two and only got Sochi as my free Mario Kart 8 title. I doubt I'll bother with this.
@SMW For me Sticks is my least favourite, as that old tired paranoia shtick is too clichéd. Not terrible, but not as funny as the rest of the cast
Sonic Boom is far and away the best Sonic show and one of the funniest current cartoons.
Looks kinda fun actually
That roster beefed up.
