Earlier in October we reported a rumour about a popular data miner in the Nintendo scene who uncovered listings on the Wii U eShop for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
At the time the evidence available was not entirely concrete in regards to what exactly this release would be, but now we have an official confirmation via the latest Nintendo Direct that the game will in fact be a high-definition remake of the 2006 GameCube / Wii original.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD for Wii U will be released on 4th March, 2016 and is being co-developed by the Australian, Melbourne-based studio, Tantalus.
In line with this announcement, Nintendo revealed a new Wolf Link amiibo featuring Midna as well as a bundle deal including both the game and amiibo in one package. The amiibo will also work with the upcoming Zelda Wii U game.
Lastly, Nintendo has confirmed five Legend of Zelda amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series will be compatible with Twilight Princess HD, and fans who pre-order the game will receive a bonus soundtrack.
Let us know in the comments if you're excited for the HD re-release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Does anyone like TP now?
What face lift? I was excited for this but it looks like they have done the bare minimum so I'll skip this. Hopefully the new Zelda comes next year as promised
@carlos82 - Pretty sure those screenshots are from the original.
Why must it need amiibo support? and now with Zelda U!
Yes! Now even something as simple as this would have made E3 that much better. I'm not sure why they didn't announce this back at E3. Easily one of my all-time favorite games! Can't wait
Damnit, I already own the game, I just want the Amiibo. >__<;
Question: Why did everyone flip out for MM3D but not nearly a big of a deal was made out of this?
Good, I just hope it's not €60 like The Wind Waker HD.
I had bought Twilight Princess a few years ago and I still haven't gotten around to playing it. Now I must get rid of it. =P
So are we still stuck with the awful midi sounds? Or did they improve on those?
@JubilifeRival probably because you can already play this game on your Wii U and from the look of the trailer, with exactly the same graphics. However it is much more difficult to play Majoras Mask for most and they made a huge effort with the presentation and gameplay to bring them up to standard.
Cool I can get into this, looks like it may be non motion controls as well.
Disappointing treatment. It doesn't even look as good as Wind Waker a few years ago, when it received a brand new coating of lighting, polygons, textures and everything. TP look exactly like my Dolphin do with upscaling.
@JubilifeRival: Because almost everyone has played TP already, but many people haven't/hadn't played MM back then.
@Undead_terror: I don't, maybe so that the wolf amiibo actually has a purpose? What surprised and enthused me more is that whatever progress you save with TPHD on that amiibo, it will be transfered to Legend of Zelda U.
WTF was that? Was that footage they showed from the original version? It didn't look any better to me. A far cry from the HD Wind Waker... Really disappointed.
Super excited, literally jumped out of my chair. Although I wish we saw some actual HD footage - or was that it?
It didn't look too great really, but I think that was mainly due to the crappy feed of the live video. I'm hugely excited for this, it's bound to look pretty spectacular in 1080p!
@Xenocity I finally got around to playing g TP for the first time in January just gone, kept putting it off for years cause of what people say about it.
And, I loved it, prob my favorite Zelda to date!
I'm totally getting this and can't wait to play through it all over again.
I think it's just automatic that people say it's not the best Zelda now.
Day one. All my money. No questions asked.
Aonuma previously stated that they experimented HD with WW and TP, and they went with WW because it most benefited from the high definition treatment. Therefore the I perceive this as nothing but a cash grab. That amiibo is nice though! I will buy the amiibo but I'll skip the game. I've played it twice and didn't much care for it the second time through.
Also, if you've got people thinking that the footage shown during the Direct is the original version of the title, then sorry but not a good enough effort!
Awesome, I can't wait for this (^_^)
@Xenocity: I still like Skyward Sword way better, but I'll get TTHD anyway. Also the amiibo. But I still hope they'll make a SSHD next year.
@CB85 Yeah I think so too. Streams always tend to mess up the looks.
@ottospooky I think @senshu meant the screenshots in the article
It looked like it was the Gamecube version with left-handed Link? Any other Wii game done in HD would have disappointed me, but getting to play the 'real' Twilight Princess will actually be nice. It better me appropriately priced for a HD port though.
@shani Yeah, I dunno how it looked for everyone else, but here on my end the entire video was really quite choppy and very low quality. Made Splatoon look like a PS2 game. XD
Am I the only one that saw the announcement of the 2 ds zelda games available after the presentation? Yet I cant see them on e shop and nlife hasnt announced them???
Looking forward to playing this on the Gamepad.
Kinda glad its coming out in March just because I can save more money after Christmas
Didn't look HD at all.
This is such a filler port release...
@headfirstslide in fairness the trailer looks no different to the original and it appears that no work has been done once the game other than increase the resolution. Which is a pretty sorry state of affairs, either make an effort or why even bother
And it only took a decade!
@Miss_Dark Just wait a couple of weeks for it to appear on bol.com or whatever.
I... I think I'm just gonna stick with playing TP on dolphin. Although that amiibo....
Need to see the trailer again because it looked like the OG version.
During the direct did they say anything about if the game would have non motion controls or just motion controls?
@headfirstslide I've read comments from people who're saying the trailer they showed didn't look that great... (I'm inclined to agree, but then saying that I had just started the stream and the definition was kind of all over the place!)
Having played the game for the first time this year in Wii mode and seeing the HD trailer now I really don't care I've played it in SD. It was cheaper than the HD game will be for some time anyway.
Second greatest 3D Zelda ahoy! But ya know, I still think Skyward Sword is in more desperate need of a remake. The original TP still looks rather great, SS has been a blurry, jaggy mess since day one. It doesn't help that the wii U's wii mode somehow makes it look even worse.
@HeroOfCybertron No, they didn't say a thing about it.
@JubilifeRival MM is a classic. People often argue which is the best Zelda game—3 names that are always brought out are OoT, ALttP, and MM. MM was just brilliant. TP doesn't have the same classic feel—I have yet to beat it (I stopped at the sky temple and then downloaded Skyrim. Bad idea...) and I hear the ending is quite wonderful. I think the game mechanic just didnt' stand out as much as the masks or the ocarina in games past. That said, I'm definitely purchasing this one!
And I don't get people's hang ups abotu the visuals. Yes, it isn't the best polished HD version we could get—fully agreed—but there is a difference. Run TP on an HD screen and you'll be very disappointed with the graphics.
My least favourite 3-D Zelda by far but I'll be interested to see what changes they make to it. It was very close to being a great game.
I hope graphics improve from now to launch.
@Solid_Stannis I didn't like Skyward Sword that much, it was very repetitive, so-so soundtrack and had very few amazing moments. On the other hand, Twilight Princess is among the best 3D entries besides Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, although I have to admit its soundtrack was scarce. Yes, I'm a composer so a bit obsessed with music.
I just hope that this remaster is not fully priced, and I would like to see the footage in HD!
They are using sharper textures, but this is much more of a port than a complete remaster/remake. I'll wait on reviews to see if they've made any worthwhile changes, but I still doubt I'll buy it. Seems to be the least of this generation's Zelda remakes.
Wind Waker HD was sort of a remake. Not fully, but they certainly went in and did a bit of work. This is just a port, so there's not much they can really do to make it look nicer apart from increasing the resolution.
@JubilifeRival Well, I still have my Wii (incl. TP) around, so if I wanted to play ... I could do so with rather minimal effort.
My N64 is somewhere in the attic, and finding it, the controllers, the games and so on, hooking all of that up ... quite the hassle, not to mention that the analogue picture from an N64 looks like s*** on a modern HD screen.
That Zelda tech demo all those E3s ago showed us what a realistic Zelda can look like on Wii U. This looks so poor in contrast.
Having said that, I need a version of this with button controls, so I guess I'll just buy it. I hate you, Nintendo -_-
More importantly is the release date!
If this comes out in March and we have other zelda releases/rereleases between now and March.
When do we think zelda u will land. I feel that they might be feeding us zelda games to plug the gap and allow then to move zelda u to September/October 2016 just before the NX port in November!
I'm preordering this game tomorrow when I pick up Amiibo Festival
Is this what passes as an HD face lift these days?
Might as well have just released the game on VC and be done with it.
WWHD looked way better than the original.
TPHD looks the exact same as the original.
This is what other companies do and I don't like it.
@JubilifeRival Because that was actually a noticeable upgrade, with quite a few big improvements and tweaks/refinements, and in more ways than just the visuals too. Also, more people consider MM to be one of the best 3D Zelda games than those that consider TP to be one of the best 3D Zelda games, I would guess.
For those interested, it is currently up for pre-order at Best Buy.
@Peach64 Yes, Link is left handed, so this is the GameCube version, at least in this sense the port makes sense, as the GC version is the original one (with left handed Link), but is very hard to find.
@Aurumonado
Not true.
It has better textures, Lighting, detail and resolution.
Hopefully better controls too.
Windwaker just has very colorful and very good art style that holds up.
Was that HD footage or original??
@Miss_Dark Don't worry, we'll get the soundtrack anyway!! ^^
@IxnayontheCK
The trailer is compressed on YouTube which is standard for YouTube.
The game is still in development and should look better in the end.
@ottospooky @Yeahman @carlos82 Here's a comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaW_0Z_Y95A
They really HAVE to include both GameCube and Wii versions in this HD version to make it worth it.
@Xenocity ok cause I was watching on my phone and couldn't tell!
Please someone tell me! WHERE can I preorder this…….. I swear I checked amazon and it was in preorder like in for 1 second and then it dissapeared PLEASE TELL ME!!!!!!
Honestly, the game looked like it was just upscaled to 1080p, much like how the Dolphin emulator works. That's not to say I'm not excited for this game; I've been dying to play through this game in high definition. I'll just pick it up when I can find it on sale is all.
Meh, I could probably achieve the same results on dolphin. Oh, but wait! it comes with a limited edition amiibo and a soundtrack! Surely that will justify the price tag...
@wiggleronacid Here's one for you too then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaW_0Z_Y95A
@headfirstslide What the...? How did he even have time for editing with the same scenes that appeared in the trailer with their counterparts in the GameCube version?? By the way, is there any video of the trailer in real HD like 720p or 1080p? And thank you very much for the links. They are appreciated.
It was only released last gen, why a update already? I take this as the new Zelda is taking too long to develope, and this is to make ppl happy till then.
The remake nobody ever asked for.
Seriously, pool those resources, stop making 3DS shovelware and get Zelda U out before December 2016.
@Fazermint
Actually quite a few fans have been asking for it.
It's a Wii U game too.
Tatanlus from Australia is doing most of the work, just like Grezzo did most of the work on the 3DS games.
"face-lift"
I admit, I failed to see the "HD" on the trailer... I will wait on more information before deciding to preorder, because that trailer wan't even a facelift - it looked the same for me as the GC version. Now, Zelda U looked gorgeous!
@VanillaLake I honestly have no idea, and not yet I guess. Pretty sure there will be one soon!
It was clearly the HD version to me. It has textures that are far higher resolution and the jaggies aren't there. I think people are comparing this video with how they remember the old one not any sort of reality. It looks like the upscaling is very well done as it matches the original style very closely just sharper. And no it isn't some auto upscaled textures.
They probably should have shared a few more features, but the other nice things: interface elements smaller and in less obtrusive. Whether it has any wii remote support or not, the game shown is using a regular controller going by the interface hints. There are more details coming later. There are more changes. Something must be stored on the Amiibo to transfer over and the other amiibo do something as well. It won't be completely bare bones.
Still, what is it with Nintendo posting official videos with horrible compression? I get that the direct is streamed. That's fine but where's the prisitine versions of these videos? It's very important for an HD remake to not be full of compression artifacts and a tiny, flat, muddy, compressed color space. :/
@Haiassai Going to disagree with you here as I finished Twilight Princess just 2 days ago on my Wii U through my high def tv. I'm seeing these screenshots and the video they posted and I quite literally thought they were showing the before so they could contrast it with the after.
Knowing how upscaling works this is the same game but being rendered in HD. There are no new textures here as far as I can tell. VERY dissapointed here. Basically they opened up the original project files in the same engine and mastered in 1080.
@aaronsullivan
YouTube and Twitch automatically compress all videos down to 320p( or is it 380p) by default.
You have to manually switch a video to a higher resolution to fully see it.
Man, I was psyched when the logo showed up - and then the game looked like a cheap upscale, except for the character models that aren't Link. Like seriously, the resolution seems all over the place! Ground and wall textures looked incredibly ugly, but Zelda, Midna, And Zant were extremely polished! But Link was unnervingly bad! He was the center of almost half the shots, yet he looked like he was ripped right out of the original version and kept as is!
I don't know what to think anymore, but good work looks different.
You can see the side by side comparison over at http://nintendoeverything.com/zelda-twilight-princess-hd-vs-original-comparison/
It's easy to tell that this is the same game but rendered in full 1080. Woop de doo. I finished TP 2 days ago. I was excited to follow it up with this but I see there is little reason to do so. Will I get it? Maybe. Down the road used on sale but not a day one by any stretch of the imagination.
Pre-ordered on Best Buy, I haven't played this game in ages.
@Aurumonado you are blind then. pop in that ugly 2006 480p version into your wii U. TP HD already looks world's better and they still have months to polish. smh
@jakysnakydx lol you are blind then. Look at the background. smh..some people just wow
@Kaze_Memaryu it's almost as if they have several months of polishing that they can still do huh? oh wait, they do because it comes out in March. hur dur
The original looked extremely muddy all the way through. The remake seems to fix that quite a bit. Also the video made every game look worse. If the game's quality decreased as much as Splatoon's did then the game will look gorgeous. I'm excited too see the new content they added with the Amiibo as well.
When they were talking about the next Zelda, they said Wii U for quite the amount. I still think it will release in May.
@jakysnakydx
You need to go to the optomotrist stat.
If you think the screenshots in this article are from the same video Nintendo just showed us you do need an update to your prescription.
Maybe you are looking on small screens from far away? I really don't understand. You post a video which, first of all, is stupid as it's incredibly lossy but it also shows the opposite of what you are saying. Low res textures on the Gamecube version and super sharp detailed textures (not an upscale pass) on the left.
I also recently played the game and the jagginess in edges and textures was quite clear throughout on a large screen and while I hated the compression artifacts and washed out nature of the video (and, yes, @xenocity I'm aware of YouTube settings) this was clearly the newer version and tremendously sharper.
@amiiboacid brings up a very good point, too. If you want to see how much the compression damaged the visuals, look at the section on Splatoon and compare it to the real game. It's insane how bad it looked.
Its an upscaled version of the Gamecube/Wii Version just as the name suggests. It's not just a simple upscale but with revamped textures , but it definitely hasn't got any graphics uplift unfortunately.
@JubilifeRival The least succesful a game is (MM) the more support and hype gets from the otakus
Total hype!
Game looks fantastic in HD! This is how I envisioned it years ago. So glad I can FINALLY play this game in HD.
I absolutely loved Twilight Princess, and can't wait to play it again. After all it's been what, nearly a decade now! Sheesh time flies
What face lift? It looks the exact same!
Very happy this rumor turned out to be true. I'm ready to have this one now. I don't really care what the amiibo does in the game, it's just a frickin' cool figure. The texture and polygon work could be better, but they have four months to work on it more. One of my favorite all time games - can't wait.
I will buy it if I can play without motion controls.
Nah I'm good. Im still playing it on the Wii. I love the amiibo though.
This is not available for pre-order currently in Canada yet
Heck I just want it for the box art and the amiibo. ....And the soundtrack. Oh how I adore that soundtrack. However it will be nice to play through it again. It is on my top three Zeldas.
@Xenocity Course. Its in my top 3 favorite Zelda games.
The cherry on top for this Direct. Next year will be the ultimate year of Zelda!!!
It's $60 us with the amiibo. Available for preorder on bestbuy.com. I already bought it. Looks great and I haven't played since 2007 even though this will be the third version I own. They said it was developed in Australia which means it's for sure second party so probably not the best it could be but better than using ead or someone else we want working on other more important games. They subcontracted it to fill a release gap. I'm still cool with it.
@JubilifeRival
Unfortunately some regard majors mask as an elite and discerning mark of true fandom while ignoring, at least in a public forum the greatness of twilight princess
@Henryhill
Sorry its third party by tantalous in Australia who did mass effect 3 and deus ex for Wii u.
I was considering getting this for the HD treatment, but I'm sold with the amiibo. I'm just hoping that there will be more to the game other than a facelift, like a basic hero mode and gamepad controls.
I'm just glad it's a remake of the GameCube version. I hated the Wii version with a passion!
Awesome sauce! I missed out on the GC and Wii generation of Nintendo gaming. I know many don't want re-makes but I will buy this for sure! I like the darker Zelda games as a balance to the more fluff ones. Also, I'm an amiibo nut so this is win-win. Pre-order will be going up for this combo. Man, the direct today was so good.
Preordered it from best buy I loved it on gamecube! People keep saying the HD upgrade doesn't look any different... there is a comparison video on YouTube I think it looks much, much better there is so much more detail, it made the gamecube version look very cloudy
Sure would've been nice if it wasn't leaked...
where's the facelift :-?
LOL...
"I want Twilight Princess HD"
Nintendo shows Twilight Princess HD
"No! I don't want it! It looks like the original!"
-__________________-
Got mine preordered! I honestly didnt see too much improvement though, unless its all very subtle. I'll need to see a side by side comparison. Ok. Now... Should I sell my Gamecube copy before the value plummets? Decisions...
So is this a remake or a port?
only payed it a few times as rental form friend got stuck and never again.
10/10 buying for dat CD
So the apology is true then. I think this all but confirms that Zelda U will pull a duel release. Funny that TP signifies it.
I have already played through this game many times so unless there is some significant new content I probably won't be repurchasing this game, despite the fact that I think that it is one of the best in the series. Also, that little bit of footage Zelda U has me dying to play it! It looks simply amazing.
..................I'll just get the cheaper Wii version again.
@ElementSponge
Straight up bare-bones port.
Finally announced. I saw this running about a year ago, and had the chance to work on it... Working on a real Zelda game was very, very tempting. Alas real life and my existing job got in the way.
Will definitely pick this up, although tp is one of my least favorite Zelda games.
So tempted by this, yet I think Zelda U is going to get the nod. The price is too high for a game I already own. Sadly little about this direct got me overly excited since I only own the Wii U.
Why can't they remake the game like wwhd? That remaster changed a lot from the original game, so why can't they do it for this game?
I want that amibo.
The least they could have done was redo just the character models so they aren't so jaggedy. The jaggeds are extra apparent next to the cleaned up textures. It looks like all they did was redo/replace the textures and called it a day.
Next to Wind Waker HD, this looks like a really lazy rushed effort. I was really looking forward to Twilight Princess HD, but if this is the extent of the "improvement" I'm probably giving it a pass.
Is it going to require motion controls like it did on the Wii or can I use a controller like the Gamecube?
@WaveGhoul It looks like it's an HD version of the GameCube version. This is good for me, since I originally played that one first, but the land of Hyrule and its inhabitants were all mirrored in the Wii version, so if you get too familiarized with the Wii version, you'll find yourself going the wrong way a lot in the HD remake. That is unless Nintendo plans to do something to accommodate people who are more familiar with the Wii version.
If there's amiibo support, they must be doing something more than an upscale. More details to come to convince me of epicness, but still getting that amiibo no matter what. I'm not that bothered by the visuals, but gamepad instead of wiimote would please me very much.
This whole announcement is irrelevant if i don't see Nintendo announce a Human form Midna amiibo for this remake? I don't even know if i can call it that. Barely saw anything new. I feel like Sony showed us this.
So the rumor was true after all!
I'll be honest.....I never thought that Nintendo is this adamant when they said that they want to surprise us! Now I'm puzzled whether to get the Wii U early next year or get the 3 3DS games that I want!
Who knows what's to come next year!
Not having gone past the starting area or so of this myself, I would've paid full price just for a version of this with no jaggies - it's seriously depressing trying to get into playing the original on an HDTV. The amiibo and soundtrack are fantastic icing on the cake.
That said, I'm worried that the treatment in the video might err on the side of being too sharp and bright, for a game that has such great somber and fuzzy overtones. I hope they don't forget that this game is called TWILIGHT Princess - that magical time where everything becomes a bit darker, a bit murkier, and a bit more mysterious.
TP was a graphically more intensive game than WW, so they could ramp up the simplistic WW graphics a lot, but there's less they can do with TP graphics.
Yeah, this game required a lot more work given it's more realistic look. Tweaking Wind Waker was relatively easy. But a lot of geometry and textures here just look baaaaaad.
Was secretly hoping for a pre Christmas release. Will get this for sure but I still think a HD mario galaxy would be more gorgeous, but perhaps nintendo fears mario overload.
Have we reached peak mario?
Will we ever reach peak zelda??
And to echo the thoughts of others, looks very much like the original. Still lots of sharp polygon edges particularly on environmental elements. I hope they spend a lot of time on the overworld.
I'm on the fence. I played it through once already but neither of my sons played it so I'm tempted. Plus the amiibo looks incredible, and the fact that it will transfer data over to the upcoming game is tempting too.
Yeah, no. This hardly looks any different other than it being brighter and having some slightly (barely) upgraded textures on things.
The models still look outdated and overall doesn't feel like it really is HD at all. Worst thing is it's probably gonna sell for full retail price much like the 3D remakes did, when that's not fair at all, especially considering the fact that this barely looks any different.
@sWiTcHeRoO Amazon has it for $59.99. when you think about the price of the amiibo and the game it is at a discount price.
@aaronsullivan Nintendo has no one but themselves to blame for the negativity. They showed off TP HD at E3 in 2011. That's what people expect when they hear HD in 2015. You think Nintendo would have learned after they showed that great looking trailer of Link at Spaceworld before showing off the WW cell shaded graphics. But alas, Nintendo never leanrs.
And I'm still waiting for my game based on that bird in the Japanese garden engine. They should have used that engine for TP HD. People were screaming TROLL at Square Enix when they first teased FF7 in HD but it was only the PC edition. Nintendo needs to learn things.
http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2014/12/final_fantasy_vii_is_limit_breaking_the_ps4_next_year
Seeing as I never got my hands on the GCN version and wouldn't be able to bring myself to the Wii one, seeing this amiibo ("Wolf Link"? Ninty, I think you mean "Midna feat. Wolf Link") and the soundtrack bonus, I have a pre-order down already. I guess my only regret is having not gone refurb on the Nintendo Online Store to have the WW Wii U (brother-in-law has it, but was the game a download...?).
So, back to that amiibo, since this is Midna's setup in Hyrule Warriors, I can't see them NOT incorporating the amiibo into it (Link-tier, not the extra whatevers all others offer).
...So, idly, since this has the GameCube orientation, what will they do, if anything, with the Wiimote controls? Might they work them out to be comfortable for both handednesses? Will the Wii flip be a "Master Quest" mode? I'd honestly be bummed if waggle controls were to be dropped entirely, since this would then not be a definitive version (though, as mentioned, the sharper visuals might work against the original aesthetics anyway).
I'm surprised everyone is so upset with the game they where asking for...look resident Evil 4 looked better one Wii than its high definition brother on the ps360...this looks much better, pop in your Wii version....however the HD will prob expose some lower polygon counts..this happened in RE4HD....this is why they picked Wind waker, they added very little detail to the models in that game...it simply did not need it. WW used the game pad extensively and creatively if you wanted it, I am sure this one will too. I normally have faith in the Nintendo faithful, but the random sort of backlash from this upsets me a little. Maybe it's nothing, or maybe we should just be thankful for what we asked.
@carlos82 You have to look closer to see the difference. I have seen comparison videos and the textures are much cleaner. The difference is easiest to spot on the twiliight sections since from what I have seen the HD version is less saturated and more clear
other than 720/1080p, is there any real texture upgrade? I couldn't really tell in the Nintendo Direct, the amiibo looks good, and so does that cover art
To those of you saying it looks no different there is in fact a difference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaW_0Z_Y95A
I just love how people are bashing this while happily ignoring all the other HD remasters that did little other than upscale the textures
@dabaumer
It's upsetting because this is yet another apology from Nintendo for the delayed Zelda U/NX. Remember the days when they said Wind Waker HD was going to be the appetizer before the main course? Well, we just got another basket of breadsticks. I think this all but confirms Zelda U is coming to the NX too.
@MoonKnight7 hey man I'm with you...I never would have said it last year. The Wii U is a strange case...the 3rd party support or lack of it makes waiting on a game like Zelda painful. It makes the lack of games more noticeable as they shift resources to the NX... So here I have this system, that has some of the best games I have played on it, and no one bought it. Games are finally getting good on the other two... Finally, but it's tough watching something that I have personally enjoyed die..sorry for rambling, I'm a little sleepy
"Do we need 'em" - Karl Pilkington
Now that proper HD versions of the video are propagating maybe the knee-jerky among us can get over it. It looks beautiful to me and the textures are crafted nicely. (I especially like the fabric details.) edit: oh, a good video is right in this story now!
@rjejr The game is not old enough to redo the geometry, in my opinion where it makes a huge difference in old early 3D classics like FFVII and Ocarina. But if you expected redone geometry (I didn't!) you'll be disappointed.
Again I'll point to the fact that there is much to learn about this game still, but at least we now know it looks immensely sharper and more detailed than the original.
@JubilifeRival Not sure if anyone replied to you yet, but Majora's Mask was a 15 year old N64 game, while Twilight Princess is a 9 year old Wii game. I can already play Twilight Princess on my Wii U. They should have waited a few more years to remake it.
That said, I'm still probably going to get it...
@sillygostly ha, that's pretty funny...same situation with me...I bought back when it 1st launched...heck, I even have the special edition strategy guide, but I played it for like 5 mins tops (ok, maybe 10) and just stopped right there
I truly wonder what it means: it will transfer data to the next game......................
...my meta mind is perculating. Doubtful but think this next game will be a direct sequel? (Mind you, I have yet to finish TP)
@JedRock : That's five more than me. I found it on sale for about $20 and I bought it afraid that it was going out of print. I also found the limited edition of Skyward Sword (with the soundtrack CD) two years ago for only $5. Yet to play that either.
To this day, I am yet to complete a Zelda game.
If this is just a half-assed rehash and doesn't add anything new, I'll stick to playing it in 4k on Dolphin.
I think one problem is that the outdoor textures don't look better. I could tell the indoor textures and the characters looked clearer. But then the outdoor ones of the grass which are flat... did not look that different.
Even so, if they add WiiU controller support like they did for WW, thats still valuable.
@erv
Since there is a soundtrack added as a preorder bonus I expect it to be fully orchestrated.
Nintendo did a really good job with remaking their Zelda games.
I don't expect this to be any different.
The trailer looks pretty neat to me. I like how it is not too realistic, but still has an artsy look to it.
Aussie devs are working on a Zelda title... I don't even care that it's just a remake, I'm pretty proud of them for getting the gig.
It looks like a high rez PS2 Game. Its just another amiibo cash grab.
@sillygostly funny still....i'm not even sure I've played my copy of Skyward Sword either...I think I have the tendency to buy MOST Zelda games...but I never play them...only Zelda game I've ever beaten was the 1st way back when...must've been 8 or so....jeezus lol
@aaronsullivan @Wolfgabe after watching the comparison videos my initial assessment was wrong and it's clear some work has been done on textures with the characters clothes if nothing else, as for it looking sharper that is purely down to the resolution increase. This still looks like a lazy port to fill a gap because we were mislead about the release of the new Zelda. Why has no work been done on geometry? The game is definitely old enough to warrant it and hasn't aged well at all. In fact the castle in particular looks horrible today as do many of the environments and 1080p will only make them look worse and don't get me started on the N64 style flames in the background. Seriously have a look at the work done on the Uncharted collection and in particular the first game where geometry was massively improved and you'll see the huge effort made, then compare that to this. As a PS4 owner too, I have seen many ports over the last couple of years and whilst this isn't as basic as some (Dishonoured) it is nowhere near the quality of the Last Of Us or Uncharted. This isn't some small developer trying to make some extra cash, this is Nintendo with one of their biggest franchises and they have put very little effort into it. I wasn't expecting it to be rebuilt from the ground up but the textures whilst better don't go far enough and seem limited to a few characters, character models should have been improved, geometry should have been smoothed over at least, maybe even a bit of grass so those unnecessarily large empty fields don't look so empty. At the end of the day if you haven't played it you should go for this version as at least you can use a real controller and it is a bit sharper, but for those that have played it there is nothing to justify buying again so why bother, Nintendo clearly haven't. I was really looking forward to this as I loved the game online the gamecube and I'm so disappointed and it's now clear their only motive is to fill a gap in the release schedule and nothing more.
Versions compare: Zelda Twilight Princess HD vs orginal GC/Wii
@JedRock
Lol. Me too. It is really bad.
I generally hardly play any adventure-type games on my Wii U.
I usually start them, love them and then return to playing Splatoon/MK8/SSB anyway. On handheld I'm trying really hard to play Majoras Mask and Ocarina of Time. Still have to return to Link between Worlds, too. I lack the patience to finish them.
But at least in OoT I am further than I ever was in a Zelda game.
I started not finishing Zelda games at a pretty young age: I had Link's Awakening Dx when I was 7 years old and never even managed to beat the first dungeon. Instead I restarted it pretty often, because I liked the games charme, but apparently was too scared to even try the more difficult passages.
Instead I watched a guy at school playing it for me. I was pretty faszinated how far he got. ^^
Of course I will totally buy this game anyway!
Zelda U confirmed as Zelda NX?
Not sure if I'll buy this. I still have the Gamecube original and they haven't upgraded the textures, looks to be just an HD facelift. And I'm sure it's full retail price. Amiibo looks nice but I already have so many of them.
What a strange choice of studio to develop it, wonder how that came about
As Philip J. Fry puts it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QfSzgV1q5g
I always say I like colourful and somewhat cheerful Zeldas so TP was bit depressing and gloomy but been thinking that it really, really, really is a great game. Tho the mote waving annoyed me. But I think it's first Zelda that I've played 100%. Okay, WW I did too.
And ..Amiibo. Oh I love my amiibos.
greatest news of the year
@JedRock : I have almost every Zelda game in some form and I haven't completed a single one. The most I've played was Phantom Hourglass, and I stopped playing that some time ago.
Here's one to add to the bucket list...
[ ] Complete at least one Zelda game
I won't bother with the NES Zelda games though. They haven't aged well and I don't particularly like them. I appreciate the franchise for what it has become, but I harbour no particular nostalgia for NES games seeing as I haven't grown up with them.
Haha, this is the rumored Tantalus port! Its actually a Zelda port, not a game of their own.
I have yet to be convinced. The only thing I see thus far is the same game with a HD sheen and Amiibo support. It has to do more to pull me in, after all I have still the Gamecube-version!
@Haiassai,
Yeah, that is curious. That combined with the way the Link on Epona image from Tp flowed into Link on Epona in the new Zelda. As if they are connected! If that's the case, then the Zelda HD experience demo from few years back may really have been from Zelda U. At some point they changed the graphics. Or there are really 2 different graphic-styles, what has been rumored by someone on youtube. Who knows, we'll wait and see!
Such a lazy port. Doesn't look nice visually at all.
A lot of people here are remembering TP on Wii/GameCube the way they THINK it looked. Seriously, in your head everything's in HD.
You guys need to go back and actually play it, I just did, and the new HD video Nintendo showed looks infinitely better and sharper, including the textures. Of course low polygon models are not going to change, as it's an HD outing, not a full-on remake like OOT/MM were on 3DS. Zant, Zelda and Midna looked great in the video because they already looked great and had detailed models in the original game.
@VanillaLake Maybe it will be even more than € 60 thanks to another useless piece of plastic called Amiibo.
From the video footage so far, it looks like it will feature the "button-control" of the Gamecube version, which is great for us who missed out on that version in favor of the Wii version. I loved many of the exclusive features of the Wii version, but flicking the Remote to swing Link's sword constantly was rather annoying, often.
I have varied opinions about this...
1) Nintendo is abusing the amiibo stuff and it will make the "amiibo fever" become tiring and too forced, I mean, what function could a Wolf Link amiibo have on TP? To be honest I just bought 4 amiibos because they are my favourite Ninty characters, but I barely use them. The fact that Nintendo is putting amiibo stuff and even locking games' content if you don't have any is becoming frustrating.
2) I'd like Nintendo to clarify if the footage shown on the trailer is the original TP or the HD one, if it's the HD I can't see any difference.
3) I think they could have released this as a Virtual Console game, instead of charging $50 for a game that was actually released 1 gen before this one, don't get Sony'ed or Microsoft'ed, Nintendo..not you. Even though I agree it would be better to release the Gamecube version because of the controls, releasing the GC version on VC could have marked the beginning of Gamecube games on the VC -there are so many great games on that console-, imagine being able to play Mario Sunshine, Baten Kaitos, even damn Smash Melee.
I like how it looks and I like the Wolf Link amiibo. Though I wonder how it will be implemented. And if it is true that some data can be transferred to Zelda U, I wonder what it is. Though I think I remember Aonuma said that Zelda U won't get amiibo support (or do I mistake this info with something he said about Majoras Mask?
I bought the Wii version last year and was pretty shocked how aged even the intro looked. I think a lot of you remember the game prettier than it was.
(I too have a memory of Pokemon Stadium looking absuletely photorealistic and am quite scared of the truth. )
What I do agree on is that they should have remodelt parts of the world. The castle and that mountain area he rides past look way to poligony for a port like that.
The European edition also comes with a soundtrack CD, if you gave a crap about mentioning European news.
You can all breath a sigh of relief, this remake is by the developers of everyone's favoirite Wii U game: Funky Barn
@sillygostly i think the Zelda i recently (and when I say recently, I mean in the last decade) spent the most time in was Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks (I just remembered it's a DS game). Yea, I can see how it MIGHT be a bit off-putting to play an old game if you didn't grow up with it but it don't you think that's a slightly misguided mentality? I mean, people STILL play the heck out of (classic) Mario and are having a ball with Mario Maker. That said, even though it would never happen, people dream of a Zelda maker as well. Of course, i'm not hating on what you think...just sharing some perspective.
@JedRock : I wasn't disparaging the NES Zelda games because they're old. Some of my favourite games ever are old and visually unappealing; however, the first two Zelda games I feel are quite poor compared to what would come after (Link's Awakening, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Oracle of Ages/Seasons etc.). Yes, the first Zelda game set a strong foundation, but I don't think that it holds up to what the franchise has achieved today.
There are many who will disagree, and hey, who am I to stop you from enjoying these games, but all I'm saying is that I've tried and have failed to get any enjoyment out of the very first Zelda games.
I want this asap lol.
@headfirstslide I agree that it looks better, but I feel as if the comparison videos just justify the fact that it is just being upscaled to HD. Yeah, the textures look more clear, but the main reason for that is due to the enhanced resolution. If you watch the video at 480p, the visuals look nearly identical. I'm sure they did a bit more than just upscaling it, but they clearly didn't put as much work into this remake as they did with Wind Waker. Regardless, it still looks good, and I am glad it was announced.
@sillygostly ah, i get ya bruh...thought maybe you just didnt enjoy retro games becausr they're old ..and yea...very true though...i think many will argue that Link's Awakening was one of the best old style Zelda games and that game is still very playable...I suppose I can still only play pt. 1 for the nostalgic value it brought
@Tiefseemiez the same goes for me...just really dont like (personally) investing a lot of time with huge open world adventure games (and heh, Zelda Wii U will DEFINITELY be that type of game)...i prefer my games a bit linear and around a 6-10 hrs time span...or maybe even something that ubcan just pick up n play a few rounds and call it a day (like Smash, MK8, Splatoon, etc)
@andreoni79 You are probably right because, is there a regular version without Amiibo?
