Nintendo's "one more thing" for today's Direct broadcast was something of a shocker - Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife is coming to Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS. No, we didn't see that one coming either.
Possibly the single most famous character in Final Fantasy history, Cloud is a strange choice as he seems more at home on Sony hardware, but you won't find us complaining - he's a seriously cool customer and a fine addition to the game (even if it does mean we have another swordfighter on the roster).
It wasn't stated if Cloud's inclusion was related to the recent ballot to pick a new Smash fighter, but we get the feeling we'll be hearing more news soon - Nintendo has confirmed that a special Smash Bros. Direct will air in December.

This is a bit too holy crap to process.
I wasn't expecting this at all.
Didn't expect Cloud honestly, Nintendo pulled a fast one on us that's for sure.
THAT was unexpected. I genuinely did not know what to expect when that immediately recognizable FF7 music started up
lol, the playground rumors have come true!
I actually voted Cloud just mucking around and thinking 'they wont put him on the roster, he's a PlayStation guy'. Cannot believe it!
Completely unexpected..
I never played any FF game either.
So dunno.
Well, hoping its not as OP as it seems in the trailer.
I was expecting a fighter, but...I fainted when it was him.
It looked like the new Final Fantasy VII was coming to Nintendo but... NO.
I'm just hoping this bodes well for the FF7 remake going to NX
First Ryu and now Cloud?
I'm loving Cloud. He's like Ryu, but with no leaks!
I don't really care for Smash, but this is the first time I've believed the ballot is actually genuine.
Does that mean a Cloud amiibo coming out?
I don't think Cloud was voted from the ballot, I think it's a cooperation to promote future coming games on nintendo consoles. Cloud is a great character choice however =)
Out of freaking NOWHERE!
I bet you weren't expecting this.
Not really out of place. Cloud is in "Final Fantasy Explorers" on the Nintendo 3DS. So he does have Nintendo history.
Well, THIS was unexpected! I mean, I'm not complaining; given how prolific Final Fantasy is and how important it is to RPGs, a Smash Bros rep made sense. But I was most certainly not expecting Cloud ('Cus, y'know, FF7 was never released on a Nintendo console.)!
NX needs the remake now. Great news anyway, though.
a PS1 Final Fantasy character..yay
seriously, what poopitypoopoop is this?
Another swordfighter? Has Sakurai gone insane?
I don't quite know how to feel about this. It's certainly a megaton announcement, that one more thing moment that the E3 presentation sorely lacked.
I've never played VII because I've never owned a Playstation. And I'm sure there are other gamers that are in the same position. This announcement is certainly not aimed at us. But yet, I am happy because I can see the significance of this announcement... but is this Nintendo's way of appeasing third parties? We'll stick one of your characters in Smash Bros if you support our future ventures? I'm not sure.
And it goes without saying that this isn't the Ballot announcement. That will come in December. This was just a teaser, I suppose
I absolutely DID NOT expect that! Turns out when they said that anyone could join the fight, they meant ANYONE. I'm so happy right now.
i wanted ff7 on wii u..maybe still possible???...
I asked for Cloud, I got Cloud! I'm so excited. Limit Break, Materia, Summons, it's awesome! Why does he have to talk in Japanese though.
Has the FF7 remake not been confirmed as a PS4 exclusive? I'm sure I read it was.
I'm not sure what to think about this yet lol
@N4LIFE That was my 2nd thought. First thought was SEPHIROTH, Though that may change thus into PASAR a bit too much. But oh man, Sephiroth, One Winged Angel, Mother in the background. Awesomeness.
@VanillaLake It would be on NX, not Wii U.
Super Sword Bros. But I'm willing to make an exception for CLOUD.
I SOOO glad rhis wasn't leaked.
He's an "eh" from me, but I LOVE that stage.
YES!!!! No K. Rool - a day to celebrate!
Why does ANYONE care about this?? An extra character in an already overcrowded, old game, who seems to borrow his moves from other characters.... That's the big reveal at the end!!?? That's what people want...??
Nintendo is trying to break the internet...
makes sense - mainstream, massive non-Nintendo fanbase, yup, why did we not expect?
@rjejr One Winged Angel, Original or Advent? I think the Advent version was cooler.
@AyeHaley My thoughts exactly. Now if I want to learn about Cloud's history I have to buy a non-Nintendo console. Genius marketing, Nintendo. Brilliant stuff, really...
@spacejump Even if you are surprised/disappointed/etc lets keep the language used family friendly. (Jazzer).
Another swordfighter... and it's not even a character remotely linked with Nintendo. We got him yet we're almost certainly not getting Isaac. Yay.
Nintendo are such mugs for giving free publicity to third parties disinterested in their consoles. No Street Fighter for Wii U, just one Metal Gear game on Nintendo since GameCube (a remake on 3DS to boot), no proper Final Fantasy since 6...
Yes! This was a beautiful reveal I never even thought about! I wish he was available today.
The stage - Midgar - looked like it was using a toned down version of the remake annoucement... Maybe Cloud's presence will lead to the remake on the NX? Never played FF7, but would love to.
I wish Smash would stop incorporating brands that are not being supported on Nintendo hardware.
First Ryu (despite no new Street Fighter games on Wii U or 3DS) and now Cloud? =/
@Dark-Luigi same
Wasn't he a cameo in kingdom hearts chain of memories for the ds back in the day? So it's not like he never touched a nintendo console. But either way cool.
@Konda Well yeah. I mean Square Enix version of Monster Hunter/Xenoblade Chronicles of Final Fantasy called Final Fantasy Explorers is coming to the 3DS, despite the fact that it already released in Japan one or one and a half year ago.
This is Smash overload with so many characters and i hope they release a complete edition for the NX launch.
Cloud sure came outta nowhere. Sure he has "history" with Nintendo but that history amounts to small appearances in Kingdom Hearts spinoffs on Nintendo portables and the other Final Fantasy spinoffs (on the portables again). His game FF7 was PS1 and PC exclusive, and the rest of the games of his compilation were also home at Playstation. Before anyone wonders, I have played all of his games (except Before Crisis) i.e. FF7, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and also watched the AC movie so I am a fan.
Quite odd that Square Enix denied his inclusion in Playstation All-Stars but here is in Smash. Guess it bodes well for Square Enix games on Nintendo NX.
Although I was disappointed in Isaac (an awesome Nintendo RPG character) getting the shaft... again. With his psynergy and complete Nintendo origins, he would not be just "another" sword character, but we get Cloud (who I like but still). Hopefully the Smash broadcast has better news for the rest of the fans who voted for characters like K. Rool, Isaac, etc.
I still haven't seen anything good come out for Nintendo after including Ryu in Smash.
Congratulations to the people who wanted Cloud in Smash. Guess I might use him when I get Smash.
Namco. Capcom. Nintendo. Square. Sega. Konami. I don't get why ANYONE is shocked that a Japanese dev's character is in this. They're the only major, and the oldest, NOT to support Smash. Not sure if people have been paying attention, but SE hasn't been exclusive since 13 debuted. And now everything is multi platform. Looks like Nintendo's trying to repair relations with Square and sell some systems, but please, continue to be shallow and elitist. It works nicely for all the core fans.
@VanillaLake That's what I thought, too! That could have been the best thing for me in ANY Direct (I'm exaggerating, but you get my point).
Oh how I wish it was the Inklings or Professor Layton... Cloud's still cool, though. Should have added him instead iof Ryu, IMO.
Cloud has appeared in various 3DS Final Fantasy conected games- the Rhythm game and I think the 3DS Kingdom Hearts game (?), but to me this says Square Enix are full on supporting Nintendo again, which is the really good news.
Biggest shocker of the Direct! Was not expecting Cloud AT ALL. Awesome choice!
The big question: is this Ballot influenced?
@sillygostly - Don't forget these companies are supporting the 3DS but it sucks for the Wii U, hopefully that luck changes with the NX
my Y Boy Cloud ! !
@Chaotic_Eevee - Isn't it being released on the XBone as well? So what's wrong with Nintendo fans hoping for a Wii U version.
Cloud amiibo!!!!!!!!!
I can't really imagine he was included as a result of the fighter ballot... Unless they didn't pick fighters by popularity. I may be wrong, of course, but I find it hard to believe he was one of the top choices of the people voting. Then again, I'm not complaining.
You are forgetting that Cloud also is on Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on the 3ds!!
@ottospooky The only trailer for the game said "Play it first on Playstation". That doesn't exactly scream "exclusive" to me.
@thesilverbrick
You don't have to buy another console to be able to play FF7. I have it for pc, as it was originally releasead for pc together with for playstation
FF7 isn't a PS4 exclusive it's just coming to PS4 first, but with no mention of other platforms. Maybe this is foreshadowing it coming to NX, after all Square Enix suggested Dragon Quest was being developed for NX and they've been pretty cosy lately. Maybe this is like getting Snake in Smash Bros. except the remake comes after the Smash Bros. character is released.
@Chaotic_Eevee funny, cause the remake is only a timed exclusive. Confirmed for XB1 already. Like Rise of the Tomb Raider. Like it's been said, there's no business in lifetime exclusivity anymore. If Nintendo hadn't helped with Bayo 2, you'd be seeing it elsewhere about now.
I wonder when the release date is & how much.
Umm odd...
FFVII inbound for a Nintendo system?
Well that was... WHAT. Looking forward to the Smash Direct in December. Crossing my fingers for King K.
@BigBabyPeach jerk
Im not familiar with dlc. I dont have a wii u but will prob buy one with smash somewhere down the line. What if thats after theres no more servers? How woyld i get ryu and cloud and them?
@sillygostly Street Fighter 4 is a 3DS retail game, i know there's a 5 out that isn't on Nintendo consoles but their certainly is a 3DS Street Fighter.
Anyone but King K is good enough for me!
Yeah, in retrospect there was basically no chance of this not happening wasn't there XD Well, I'm still just holding onto hope that we get Isaac and a Tales character.
So not expecting... I CRIED OF JOY
My internet crashed around the point where they were just talking about the Fire Emblem: Fates Special Edition and didn't start again until the part in the Smash Bros trailer where Cloud was fighting Little Mac. I honestly had no idea how to react and just kept shouting "What the hell did I miss!?!" Now that I've calmed down, I think that this is awesome. I've never actually played Final Fantasy VII but I have played Kingdom Hearts and I like his character in that. I also think his design looks really cool (I mean, have you seen his hair and the size of that sword?) so to me he's a welcome edition. Personally, I would have preferred Sora from Kingdom Hearts, but Cloud is still a good second! Also, why are people so against sword fighters again? They mostly all play differently so I don't really see a problem with them. You might as well say we shouldn't get any more brawlers if your problem is that they all use the same weapon.
@ottospooky @Chaotic_Evee
From what I remember, I believe that Final Fantasy VII HD is only a timed exclusive so an NX release is still possible. I'm not saying it will happen but it's certainly not impossible.
If Cloud is in smash then ANYONE can be. Look forward to Shrek and Goku.
@N4LIFE they confirmed every smash character will have an amiibo so yes, there will be ^~^
@Konda But I'll have to purchase a game that runs on a console not produced by Nintendo, and if I like it enough I'll be hyped for the remake, which is exclusive to a rival console. Cloud isn't the most sane choice from a marketing perspective, that's all I'm saying.
I don't care how this happened, I don't care why this happened, I don't even care that this doesn't make any sense at all. I love it.
@LetsGoRetro
Once Nintendo shuts down the eShop servers, you won't be able to get any of the DLC. That won't happen for a long time, but it will eventually. It would be cool if Nintendo released a Sm4sh Ultimate Edition with all the DLC though.
@thesilverbrick
the game is a timed exclusive only, meaning a possibility of a nx release maybe, along with DQ XI?
Unless the FF7 remake is coming to the NX, I don't see a single reason for Cloud to be in smash. I don't count on it though.
Another swordfighter?! Hey no complaints! I mean look at how many hand to hand brawlers there are...besides swords are my favorite!
@Aurumonado Shrek and Goku aren't video game characters.
@rjejr Ok, change Wii U for Nintendo.
@Aurumonado Just waiting for the final clip of the Smash Bros Direct. The screen fades from black to a tranquil scene... Then the cry of "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY SWAMP!!!" Shrek joins the 'All Star' cast.
@VeeFlamesNL So I was not the only one!
If you really want to play Final Fantasy VII remake just wait until platforms are confirmed. It looks like it will appear not only on PS4.
Wish the developers such as SquareEnix and Capcom would grace Nintendo with some of their biggest games instead of just lending characters and costumes... sigh! This is a strange sight though, at least with Snake you had Twin Snakes on the GameCube.
They might make a FF7 port to the 3DS. Considering that Sony is abandoning the vita and the japanese love their handhelds, putting a FF7 port on 3ds might make sense.
Where is Aeris? What happened to her?
Odd choice, but I don't mind him being in Smash. I know nothing much about FF games, though I really should play them.
Since this isnt the ballot, duke nukem could still be in smash.
@Reusinck I'd take Earthworm Jim over Duke Nukem
I'm not much of a FF guy but having more characters is never a bad thing. Looking forward to the Smash Direct, come on Rayman.
That FF stage looks siiick! I'll get him if he's bundled with the stage like how Ryu was for sure.
Cool, but kinda dumb. FFVII was never on a Nintendo console, only playstation and pc, so why bring Cloud to Smash Bros?
Holy crap. I didn't expect this! Awesome!
As shocking as this news was, my first thought was: does this mean that FF7 Remake will hit NX?
Or maybe something even more interesting (in my opinion): digital release of FF7 on Wii U? Will we finally see FF7 on a Nintendo platform?
I'm excited! I love FFVII, Crisis Core (the best PSP game) and Advent Children and I've always wanted a FFVII game or remake in a Nintendo system, kind of a retribution, I remember when Squaresoft "betrayed" Nintendo back in the nineties.
@hYdeks According to this the platforms for Final Fantasy VII remake are currently unknown except PS4:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII
What if this is foreshadowing an FF7 NX port? Think about it; FF7 wasn't on Nintendo consoles and with the new remake's anticipated launch being in the ballpark of when the NX is expected to hit, could this be a hint of things to come?
FF7 to me is single-handedly the best game of all time! It blew my mind as a child and is the #1 reason why i'll finally buy a ps4 (when the remake is released). To see Cloud in Smash is so freakin awesome. I see he has his Limit... I wonder if this will work like Little Mac's KO bar? I wonder if his final smash would be to summon Meteor? I wonder if Sephiroth would join the roster? And how the hell did Nintendo get the rights to use him anyway?!??
Not really excited, since Cloud is such a lame character in FF7, and Squenix is a dead zone to me, anyway. Oh well, whatever...
This was a surprise, and does not make a lot of sense to me.
I actually forgot about the Nintendo Direct, and only tuned into the last minute.
What I tuned into looked like a joke.
I know when Snake was in Smash Brawl, it was somewhat odd. But for many people, especially in the West, their first experience of the Metal Gear series was on the NES, and there was a MGS remake on the Gamecube as well. He did have a connection, even if not especially strong.
Megaman also kicked off on the NES, so had a strong connection.
Shulk was also odd, but had a strong connection with Nintendo consoles, which was strengthened by the remake for the 3DS.
But Cloud has no connection at all to Nintendo, other than possibly making cameos in some games?
Though if they did produce a FF7 remake for 3DS or WiiU, that would be make this make more sense, and be quite welcome. But it is unlikely. There Is a remake on the way, but Wikipedia seems to say that it is a timed exclusive for the PS4. While that suggests maybe it will grace other platforms eventually in this remake form, it'll be a long time after he starts kicking around in Smash. Most likely it'll hit the NX.
Unless they're making multiple remakes at the same time. Then I'd wager it would be more likely a 3DS release.
But if they can put in Cloud, I demand they put in Papyrus too. And a Sans Assist Trophy, which only actually does something if someone is winning in a big way(i.e. have 'killed' a lot of opponents). Then, Megalovania plays....
@MitchVogel Yes, that's what I was saying. It's a possibility.
theres no way nintendo can get away with this. there sued. SO.FRIKIN.SUED!!! hey sony! nintendo is stealing a character frm a sony exclusive game
@NintyMan
My thoughts exactly. I'm guessing he isn't part of the ballot.
@MitchVogel I don't think so. This looks like the Ryu situation to me: Capcom & Square have Nintendo by the balls with Monster Hunter and the Dragon Quest games. Without those 2 franchises Nintendo would be in big trouble.
Kind of a kick in the teeth, considering this is the game where Square basically dumped Nintendo like a brick—and Nintendo consoles haven't really seen any new/proper Final Fantasy games in the main franchise since—and now the company gets to have the mascot character from that game in Smash Bros. Oh, the irony.
I like how they included a little tribute to when Cloud meets Aerith (Zelda) at 1:16.
@Mr-X9000 FrankerZ
@Squadallama FrankerZ?
@Mr-X9000 I hope you realize it doesn't work anything like that at all. Sony does not own even a portion of the character Cloud Strife, Square-Enix does, and Square-Enix can do with the character what they wish. And in this occasion they have chose to let Nintendo use him in Super Smash.
@Gridatttack Everyone looks OP in their trailers, but Mewtwo ended up being one of the worst characters in the game.
I personally asked for Sabin Figaro from Final Fantasy VI to be added to Smash. I am surprised that even in a dedicated Final Fantasy fighting game series Dissidia he was not a feature fighter. His Blitz command practically screams fighting game.
@duffmmann i dont get it. he's from a game thats exclusive to sony playstation, but he's being used on a nintendo battle. i get square owns him, but arent the rights still restricted to sony systems?
@C-Olimar ....but he was in FF Explorers for about 2 years now in Japan and was on FF Theathrythm 1 and 2 for a long time now...
@Kirk And he was denied for Sony's Smash clone
Adds my 7 Cents
Now, if only we get Alucard or Simon Belmont....
Smash is truly becoming the all-star fighting game.
Personally, I'm a little conflicted about what to think about the announcement of Cloud. On the one hand, I completely understand why he was chosen. Final Fantasy is a series with strong Nintendo ties, its origin lies with the NES/Famicom. When one thinks of Final Fantasy, if only one character comes immediately to mind, I guarantee that for most people it is Cloud Strife. So for what he represents and the entire franchise he is the face of, it does make sense for him to be the fighter in Smash.
On the other hand, Cloud has no real presence for Nintendo. Just appearing in Final Fantasy spinoffs and the like when it comes to Nintendo. It makes him a very weak choice in this regard when it comes to Square-Enix's footprint in the Smash series. However, if you're going to have a Final Fantasy character for a fighter in Smash, I really don't think there stands a great choice in regard to standing out as something special for Nintendo. Not many casual fans are going to recognize any of the main characters from the first 6 Final Fantasy games. So if you're going to represent Final Fantasy, I think Cloud absolutely is the choice to go.
But I think ultimately that is the issue, I don't know if they should be representing Final Fantasy. While it is a great series with roots and ties to Nintendo, its also a series not so strongly tied to Nintendo as it once was. But I do think getting Square-Enix to leave a mark in the Smash series is something that should happen. But ultimately that leads me to the belief they should use one of their characters with a strong NIntendo connection. And I think obviously this leads us to Super Mario RPG. Yeah, I think that ultimately Geno should have been the character chosen from Square-Enix and announced today. Its just makes the most sense. However, I'm not the slightest disappointed with Cloud, I think he's a highly prolific character that deserves to be in a fighter celebrating video game history, its just a shame that his relation to Nintendo is so weak is all. Plus, Capcom has 2 fighters representing them, its still possible that Geno could find his way in the game in the future too, I can't dismiss that possibility.
Mr-X9000, I believe the rights for FFVII expired a little while ago.
@Mr-X9000 - FF is not Sony exclusive. You're probs thinking of KH maybe. But FF started on the Nintendo.
The only requisite, mentioned back then when Snake was first announced for Brawl, was for third party characters to have appeared at least ONCE on a Nintendo system.
Cloud have appeared in games for the GBA (KH Chain of Memories), DS (KH Re:coded) and 3DS (Theathrythm Final Fantasy, Curtain Call Theathrythm Final Fantasy and the upcoming Final Fantasy explorers)
Funny how 3rd parties are more fine in allowing their properties to be in Smash than supporting the systems
Day one amiibo for me.
Yomerodes,
But those are really just cameos while Snake had a major title on the Gamecube.
@KO-Cub i know that. but final fantasy 7 IS exclusive to sony (asised from an alleged PC remake i heard od last year that might not exist) @PigmaskFan what makes you so ssure?
Ryu and now Cloud, they're certainly making poor choices for additional characters
@Mr-X9000 Cloud has already appeared in a few FF spinoffs on Nintendo consoles and handhelds, it clearly isn't an issue getting him into Smash. Hell, I'm sure that if Nintendo payed enough money and Square-Enix showed enough interest, that FFVII remake could also come to the Wii U. Though as it stands I think we all know that isn't going to happen.
@duffmmann The problem with Geno is that at the end of the day, he's simply another Mario character. Putting him or Mallow is would be fun, but he does not showcase Square Enix's history or their place in gaming history. They would simply be another set of characters with a Mushroom icon next to their names and the Mario victory music. It would be a waste of a third-party spot.
Now, if they wanted to honor a Square Enix series in Smash, you can't go wrong with Dragon Quest.
All 11 main series games are on Nintendo platforms in some form, with I, II, III, IV, V, VI, IX, X, and XI all having debuted on Nintendo systems.
@shaneoh YES! if i could +1 a comment on here, it would b this comment. i agree completely, sir
@duffmmann could you name said spin off games?
JOHN CENA!!!!
@shaneoh A lot of Street Fighter and Final Fantasy fans would disagree, myself included. Can't wait for Cloud, seriously can't believe its happening!! Also can't wait for the inevitable 2 other fighters that will be announced next month as well.
Now we just need a Sephiroth Assist Trophy.
@Soren Don't care. I'm still mad at Sony b/c the final boss in PSASBR wasn't Sephiroth but was stickman or something. Who made that decision? One Winged Angel for the win. Always. Any version. Mono. Stereo. 5.1. 7.1. I just want to hear it and fight to it.
So I probably just guaranteed in won't be in SSB.
I voted for Yuna as my choice FF representative. This makes me a bit salty because I never played FFVII but either way, I'll accept it and buy him when the DLC drops, since I do plan to play the remake.
@duffmmann
They can disagree all they want, they're both bland choices.
@Mr-X9000 Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories, Theatrythm Final Fantasy and its sequel Curtain Call, and heck even a game announced today for the 3DS: Final Fantasy Explorers.
He definitely already has a Nintendo presence, admittedly a weak one, but it does exist.
@Caryslan The other problem is, as far as Smash 4 goes anyways, is that DLC has to sell. Geno wouldn't sell super well.
@VanillaLake Don't feel the need to change anything on my account, what do I know?
I was just going off of the DQ11 comment about that game being on NX since both games are made by Square Enix.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/07/dragon_quest_xi_is_coming_to_the_nintendo_3ds_and_nintendo_nx
@IceClimbers "Geno wouldn't sell super well."
Maybe IK would sell? (FYI the guy who punched him in his face and broke his jaw and team captain for tonights game.)
In an otherwise awesome Direct, this was the big WTF moment for me.
I mean, Ryu at least has history with Nintendo - Street Fighter II timed exclusivity was a big trump card for the SNES back in the 16-bit era. But Cloud Strife? Cloud freaking Strife?
I'm pretty sure Mr. Yamauchi is rolling in his grave.
@IceClimbers I think a new fighter will sell well, no matter how well known they are. At least a character like Geno oozes that Nintendo charm that screams they deserve to be a Smash fighter. While I think Cloud is acool to have in Smash, you can't deny that his overall design isn't anything that exciting, he pretty much looks like another Fire Emblem sword fighter. I think a lot of fans are looking for the more unique and vibrant characters, which I'd say Geno definitely falls under. (So do the Inklings, Bomberman, Ice Climbers, K. Rool, etc.) i suspect the Smash direct or whatever we get next month will announce two more characters in addition to Cloud just as Roy and Ryu were announced in addition to Lucas. So perhaps we'll see more of those kinds of more Nintendo-y characters announced alongside Clound next month.
@duffmmann i see...
@Kevlar44 : I'm not counting that as that was released over 4 ½ years ago and none of the upgrades/DLC of SSF4 or its subsequent retail instalments were released on 3DS. The franchise is as good as dead on Nintendo platforms.
@Jayvir That's what i was thinking, square has already confirmed support for NX with dragon quest, so i think it's a real good shot. And when the inevitable cloud amiibo comes, he'll be of use for the ff7 remake (assuming NX will support amiibos, which would be crazy if it did not).
I'll buy him because he is a new character but I was not blown away by this announcement. Never been a VII fan...
I do think it is possible that Square is indeed working on having the FF7 remake out for more than just the PS4 (is it also coming to the Xbone, or just the PS4 at this point?), if Nintendo and Square are getting along again, and that does seem to be the case given their mention that they will support the NX, then I think it is quite probable that the FF7 remake will also come to the NX.
At the end of the day I think what people need to realize is that Cloud is in here not because of his personal strong ties to Nintendo, but rather for what he represents. He for all intents and purposes really is the character who's face more or less represents the entire Final Fantasy series. He is arguably the most recognized fighter in the entire Final Fantasy series. And Final Fantasy has its roots deep inside Nintendo, and it absolutely is one of the all time most iconic video game series. So in that respect, Cloud makes a lot of sense.
So, how many characters form FF7 could they cross over - not just playable but as trophies or in the background - that could also be made into amiibo?
At least 6 I think. I'd buy a Marlboro amiibo and smash it to death w/ a big hammer, Marlboro are my nemesis. And I'm assuming it would still work, win-win. Chocobo, Barret - b/c SSB needs more guns, less swords, Tifa, Aerith, Cait Sith. Yuffie. Red XIII, a moogle. Oh, maybe a Moogle riding a chocobo? Almost needs it's own SSB clone game on a Sony console.
@Zelkardaim
Lol! You have made my day. Thank you.
@ricklongo Why would he be rolling in his grave? At the end of the day, Cloud prints money and has an insane fanbase behind him.
Let me put it this way, Cloud will print alot more money then Shovel Knight or Shantae ever could. Heck, he'll likely print more money then some other major third-party characters.
Cloud has a large fanbase and this is his first fighting game appearance outside the Final Fantasy series.
Mr. Yamauchi would likely applause this as a brilliant business move and a chance to stick it to Sony who could not get Cloud into their own SSB-style game.
Mr. Yamauchi was about making money and Nintendo's power. Cloud will draw in a new crowd to Smash, and he will make money.
This choice was not about ties to Nintendo, it was about Nintendo seeing a golden cow and milking it.
@Kirk Square did not drop Nintendo like a ton of bricks with Final Fantasy VII. The game started development on the Nintendo 64, and was moved to the Playstation due to the N64's choice of media not being big enough for the game Square wanted to make.
People really need to stop with this idea that Square betrayed Nintendo. Nintendo built a system that did not suit the games that they wanted to create, while Sony did have such a system.
Which is still an issue to this day and why Nintendo has so much trouble getting third-parties onboard.
@IceClimbers That is something some people are missing the point on.
This is not about who has been on Nintendo platforms or who has strong ties to them. Its all about money.
And Cloud is going to be a bigger seller then pretty much anyone else people care to name. Alucard, Simon Belmont, Shovel Knight, Shantae?
Cloud is a more popular character then all of them, with a larger fanbase.
At this point, I think Snake is coming back. Snake is about the only third-party character left who can match Cloud's popularity.
@ cheifeagel02
If he gets the Smash Ball his Final Smash will be the 5 moves of Doom lol.
Well, I was hoping for a character, but did not see that one coming... if Shulk marks the first, ACTUAL representation for JRPGs in Smash, Cloud is the ULTIMATE role-playing game character ever. Glad to see the most famous JRPG franchise, although from an entry that never appeared on Nintendo consoles outside of spinoffs, is going to be featured in Smash. I just hope this doesn't dash Sora's or (speaking of characters with more realistic hopes of appearing, although "realistic" just lost meaning tonight) Isaac's hopes of getting in the game, but that's the only downside of an all-around megaton announcement.
Also, I'm glad we're getting a second Smash direct the next month. If the Ballot winners (provided Cloud isn't indeed a Ballot winner of his own, but he's way too polished to have JUST started development) weren't announced tonight, they surely will in a month; Cloud will most likely be released right after the next Smash broadcast, which marks the start of yet another waiting game in my gaming life.
Did anyone else recognize kakatekoi?
I know people aren't gonna read this but I hope we see a more cooperative gaming generation this gen. Sharing ip's among companies seems like a more gamer friendly approach. There was an article on game informer a long time ago (2006) where they mentioned the desire for unified gaming system where Mario and Zelda could be played alongside Final fantasy and Gears of war, Halo, Kingdom hearts, etc. Too far fetched but this announcement makes that desire possible, even if only a little.
@FeedingTheWheel
Considering the whole Console Wars ordeal, that'd be the gaming equivalent to world peace. It might happen eventually, but it's unlikely this will go past the daydream stage in the next decade.
@NintyMan Cloud didnt win the ballot lol
@WaveGhoul
The sword-fighters will never outnumber the cartoony guys, no need to worry.
Besides, well, it's friggin' Cloud Strife, who is, perhaps, to JRPGs what Mario is to platformers.
Awesome. Simpley awesome. And the Midgar stage with the summons looks insanely fun.
People. ...be happy that we get more characters into an already amazing game. Cloud is already one of my favorite characters of all of gaming history and now he's in my favorite video game franchise in history is just too much for me..personally. ..but can't you guys see that it can only get better from here..any one can get included..I voted for cloud but now I wish I chose someone less realistic....but this means that smash bros will start to expand to a bigger and better roster. We smashin guys
I definitely think this bodes well for a return from Snake. Cloud's Nintendo ties are extremely weak at best. I always thought Snake's ties were weak, and this was my belief as to why he was dropped after Brawl, as all he's had in the time since then for Nintendo is a port of a title to the 3DS. But compared to Cloud's connection to Nintendo, Snake is far more prominent in Nintendo games than Cloud is, and as such I can now easily see Snake make the return to Smash. I think ultimately it just depends on how Konami is even operating these days. Without Kojima or a major focus on console gaming, will they even have any interest on doing Smash again?
@WaveGhoul
Those are all better choices
Ive been done with smash bros for a year now, so this and the future Smash direct doesn't phase me at all.
Once I was able to collect myself after witnessing the absolute awesomeness of this reveal, I thought about it. As cool as it is having Cloud as a playable character in SSB, a port of FF7 would've been better. When they started the trailer with the instantly recognizable opening theme, I immediately thought FF7 port - kinda disappointed it's only a character in Smash. Sorry to be a downer - this was an incredible announcement. Just not as great for me.
I've been a Nintendo fan for 20 some years and have no idea who this anme guy is.
After looking him up, why the heck did we get this dude from a playstation game?
WHAT THE HELL? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Smash 4 got Cloud instead of Bomberman!?!? If ANY representative of Final Fantasy should have made it in, it would probably be Cecil or Terra, from FF4 or 6. Even the fricking Knight from FF1 would make more sense! This better be an indication that mainline titles and the FF7 remake are coming to the NX...
I would've put the Black Mage in instead, since he's heavily tied to the original FF games.
I honestly don't know how I feel about this; I mean, this is an amazing announcement for sure, but I would have loved to see him in Allstars instead. It's kind of odd seeing Cloud in this game, however, at least that Cloud vs Link rematch can finally happen!
PS - Anoybody knows when we'll get more info on NX? I want a Wii U but I don't want to make that purchase if NX is around the corner. If it's a year or less away, I might as well wait it out.
Man, this almost foreshadowing that FF7 remake to come in some form on Nintendo console. I hope it's that, but who knows, we might actually get FF7 port from iOS version instead. That'll be hilarious though.
Why are people pissed off about this? Don't you guys want 3rd party support? I personally think this is great! Plus that FF7 remake might come to the NX. Wouldn't it be great to get to know Cloud via Smash and then later in his actual game? (What I mean by that is I'm sure everyone has played one character in Smash but not played the game that the character is actually from.) This is a nice pleasant surprise.
God some of you fanboys just ruin everything...
Final Fantasy VII is not the only game Cloud appeared in for everyone who is bringing that up. He is even in Final Fantasy Explorers
Though he isn't necessarily a good fit for the game I am not really complaining since I am a fan of Square Enix and most of their games. I haven't purchased any dlc for the game yet but this guy has me tempted.
Why?
I'll get him, but this was the most random inclusion in the direct.
WHERE THE HECK IS SNAKE?!?!?!??
I almost died when I saw that!! I am a HUGE FF fan, and am just about to beat FF VII for the first time, so this was so strangely well timed. Completely unexpected though! The last character I would have thought would make the cut! (No pun intended...)
Cloud is a neat character, and I am happy that they chose to go with his original in game costume, as well as his Advent Children costume! FFVII is definitely on my top favorite games list.
I expected Inklings.
We got Cloud.
I got disappointed.
...don't get me wrong, I like Cloud, but I'd rather keep Smash actually NINTENDO related. Cloud barely has anything to do with Nintendo.
Please let this mean FF VII will also come to Nintendo consoles.......
@J-Manix98 Final Fantasy 7 is definitely one of my favorite JRPG' s of all time, along with: Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Grandia II, P3&P4. As far as final fantasy goes, it's the best one, in my opinion.
Gaccck, Gaaaaaackk, uuurrrrrrkk...sorry I'm dry reaching because of how sick this makes me. There are legions of of amazing Nintendo characters that could have filled the roster slot...but instead we get...Cloud. A character with zero history with Nintendo before that hash-out upcoming cross-over that's coming out. Not to mention all the big name games Cloud is in are on Sony systems. Who's next? Goku?
Don't get me wrong. I actually really like FFVII (still own the PS version), but this is the dumbest roster fill. Dumber than Ryu...which is REALLY hard to believe I'm saying that. We should just get a DLC stage where the characters fight on top of a PS4 and be done with it.
I personally am not too excited about this, but this is indeed very cool.
Another swordsman isn't as bas as ANOTHER anime-like white kid. Still, Cloud is cool. I would have preferred Crono, but oh well. Awesome looking Midgar stage though!
Aside from that, there's a lack of villains in that roster.
Aiyah! I remember wanting Puck-Man, Mii, and Cloud Strife to be in the game!
...at this point, I would not be totatally surprised if Gojiira, despite being a film character, was in the game.
This gives hopes that King K Rool would be in the game, though. I mean, given the popularity of Cloud Strife, King K Rool would be possible.
I echo people here: Cloud appeared in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories from the GameBoy Adavnce, qualifying the 'Nintendo- appearance' requirement. (Besides, was not Final Fantasy VII once going to be through the Nintendo- 64?)
@Yosher
The Smash Ballot's only restriction is "characters born in the video game medium only", as in, no Shrek, no Goku etc.
Besides, remember Snake? Sure, he had a bit more history with Nintendo (and even Cloud does, if you count Kingdom Hearts Chain Of Memories, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call), but Kojima did advertise Metal Gear Solid 4 - which, mind you, was a PlayStation 3 killer app - in the Shadow Moses Island stage. So, even considering the [sighs] Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS4, this makes Cloud a perfect parallel to Snake back in the day.
I didn't see this coming at all. Honestly, I don't get it at all. The character has never graced a Nintendo system??? But another character is always a good thing.
The cool thing is that Cloud is not the winner of the smash ballot. So there is still hope for one my picks!
@R_Champ Heh. Personally, I think Zero suit samus in high heels is the dumbest thing. As if silicone implants, a whip and a latex catsuit wasn't enough.
Insults to Samus and womans imo.
Born in the world as Strife...against the odds...he chose to fight?
Great another swordsman just what Smash needed. Another swords man.
@sillygostly ok if you wont count street fighter 4 3d then i guess you wont count the two kingdom hearts on the gba that cloud is in or the two final fantasy theatrical rhythm games on the 3ds cloud is in or the capcom vs game on the wii that ryu is in or the two project x zone games on the 3ds that ryu is in? how about the fact that cloud is in final fantasy explorers?
guess your a cherry picker. must make it eazy to win arguments
@Yosher cloud has been in 4 nintendo games to date and final fantasy explorers will make five. you do realize we are getting more than one fighter right?
"I've seen a hat stand, heard a rubber band! I seen a needle that done winked it's eye! But I think I've seen, 'bout every-thiiiiing! When I've see a smashing Cloud Striiiiiife!"
Inb4 butthurt K. Rool fans who wanted K rool to be playable.
@smashbrolink Oh my gosh I just barely understood those puns. I feel like a dumbo now.
It makes sense that someone from FF was in,but I'd rather have seen someone like Terra or Cecil, given that they actually debuted on Nintendo hardware. In fact, I'll start it right now, Terra for Smash 4!
The spot really should've gone to Crono, though.
Smash is becoming weird. Third-party characters that have little-to-no relevance to Nintendo being added just seems wrong. Hopefully the ballot results aren't too crazy.
@Zoda_Fett ;-; same......
Nintendo peeing on themselves again. How many Final Fantasy games have there been since SNES fore Nintendo? None? Yes
@Senate_Guard : Exactly. Its silly to add characters from developers that refuses to make games on a Nintendo console.
Another stupid choice by fanboys.
Great, another sword using guy. Throw him in the same pile as Link, Shulk and the 50 Fire Emblem characters.
FF7 was over rated crap!
I feel like they should have used a character from a final fantasy game that was on a Nintendo console but whatever I guess.
@Ventilator are you kidding? square has released quite a few games on the 3ds this gen. it is a nintendo console and it does have smash
@Senate_Guard cloud is in 2 soon to be 3 3ds titles and 2 ds titles
@WaveGhoul smash has 3 fire emblem characters out of what? 49? relax
@WaveGhoul i mean 4 forgot about robbin
Serious warning, in bold for emphasis:
If you're wondering about whether or not to check out SmashBoards' Cloud announcement thread in order to see the reactions... don't. It's a dark and scary place at the moment.
So... could FF7 be gracing a Nintendo system in the future?
@faint : And zero games on Wii U.
HO...LY golden land!!! Knights of the Round Final Smash??? Yaasssssss!! I can't believe how many people are hating on Cloud. The guy is an icon for a genre and a series that began on the NES. Who cares how many games he has or hasn't appeared in on Nintendo systems. Maybe this is a sign of things to come. Either way, the hype is real... for me at least.
@MeloMan
As mentioned in my comment on the Final Fantasy Explorer article, Cloud's appearance will lead to an amiibo, which will most likely find its second use on said FF spinoff. Add the tagline for the FF7 remake ("Play it first on PlayStation"), and do the math.
@Caryslan Dude. Get your facts straight. The history between Nintendo and Square is a bit more complicated than that. It wasn't simply due to the media choice that Nintendo did choose with the Nintendo 64. It was the way Nintendo treated Square during the SNES days. Would give more details but you should be able to google it.
@shaneoh Working hard to boost your hipster cred, I see.
It just dawned on me... we're getting Squall, Bartz and Cecil as Mii Swordfighter costumes. Calling it now.
@LasermasterA
Oh, if it isn't my favorite Isaac supporter! Fellow Isaac supporter, I have to add. (For the record, I voted exactly three times: Sora, Popo, and Isaac.) I really hope Isaac will be included, as a traveling platform-based stage with the fighters duking it out on Vale's rooftops (or, heck, even a stage that goes all the way across Weyard, even if it will use 16-bit-slash-Mode-7 retro graphics akin to Smash 3DS's Mute City!) really gets me giddy thinking about it. Still amazed at the fact the face of JRPGs made it in Smash though.
And I've seen your comment on SmashBoards. You have my deepest admiration for not being anywhere near as salty as everyone else was there.
i wonder why people tends to look only in what history has :/
so what's the problem about cloud being only in spinoff on nintendo platform?
instead of arguing about the past, can you guys thinking what nintendo will bring to us in the future about this news?
and you guys do realize cloud isn't the only new character in the upcoming dlc right?
@Nomad Soon there will be Abe as well
@AlexSora89 @faint I'm well aware of this, but Cloud just appears in rather minor roles on Nintendo consoles. Minor roles should not count towards characters being considered for Smash. If they really want Final Fantasy in Smash, bring in a generic Black Mage, or a Moogle, or someone like Cecil who actually has some bloody relevance to Nintendo outside of such minor roles.
Now if FF VII would actually come to a Nintendo console, I'd be ABSOLUTELY on board with Cloud getting into Smash, but this just feels absolutely wrong.
And yes I know we're getting more fighters than just Cloud. That doesn't make Cloud's inclusion any better.
Snake actually had some MAIN GAMES on Nintendo consoles he appeared in, Cloud can't say this. So I'm somewhat okay with Snake in that regard.
But oh well, people apparently don't give a **** about characters being relevant to Nintendo or not, they just want to put every big name character into Smash because OMFG CLOUD HE'S SO AWESOME WE MUST HAVE HIM IN SMASH. It sickens me. But hey, new punching bags are always nice I guess.
@Dr_Corndog
Pffft, me a hipster? Couldn't afford the clothes. Nor would I have the patience to shop for them if I could. I just find SF and FF to be very over-hyped series. Cannot understand the appeal.
@Fee XD Glad someone else around here is old enough to get the joke.
NOOOOOOOoooo I hate FF7 and I especially hate this character. But I want to have a complete collection of all the crap in Smash Brothers so I'll probably end up paying money for a character I despise anyway. Obviously Nintendo chose Cloud because they completely ran out of characters from their own games to use. Bleargh.
I really hope he doesn't have as special a counter (something that seemed maybe hinted in a frame of the video), we already have enough characters that are too stressful to attack XD
@Yosher he's in final fantasy explorers as a main choice party member. I doubt we will see a game from konami next year other than vc but we are getting four from square. High profile ones too. And who knows. If cloud sells enough we may get that remake on the nx square was also the first 3rd party to even mention putting games on the nx. They make money and they will bring games.
FF7 remake confirmed for NX. It will be released after Half Life 3.
Looks like the stereotypical teenage DeviantArt user's wish upon a star finally came true, and it certainly does cause some strife. While Cloud may be the most well-known Final Fantasy Character, Final Fantasy VII has NEVER been released in any form on a Nintendo system. The VERY least that Square Enix should do in response would be to port FFVII to the eShop in celebration of their big guy finally settling it in Smash. Something less likely to happen, however, would be to release the remake of FFVII on Wii U, but I suppose I'm wishing upon a star, now, knowing their lovely track record with their second-class Nintendo releases.
@faint: Smash should be a "Who's Who" showcase of Nintendo franchises. It would make more sense to include franchises that are known for their inclusion on Nintendo platforms. Both Theatrhythm and Kingdom Hearts are spin-offs that complement the main series Final Fantasy series on PlayStation systems, but do not count as part of its canon. I'm sure Cloud's appearance is relatively insignificant as Theatrhythm is basically a musical showcase for die-hard fans. Players who are only exposed to Cloud via Theatrhythm are unlikely to gain any significant understanding of his character or lore, plus the GBA game you've mentioned was released over 11 years ago, and he has made no other appearances in any games with a storyline since. Including him in PlayStation All Stars would have made sense considering that the Final Fantasy series is more or less available in its entirety on Sony's systems, but in Smash? I had never even heard of the guy until today.
So unless Square Enix intend to support Nintendo platforms with future (or even past) instalments of main series Final Fantasy games, I do not see why Cloud should be included given the nature of the Super Smash Bros. roster. Including him makes about as much sense as including say, Crash Bandicoot or Lara Croft. Sure, they've made sporadic appearances on Nintendo hardware, but very few (if any) main series games from these franchises have been released on Nintendo hardware to this day, and they are not particularly known for doing so.
I'm guessing that this may be a calculated tactic by Nintendo to lure PlayStation fanboys to Nintendo platforms (though I doubt that a single DLC character in a brawling game is going to necessarily help). If not, I hope that Square Enix made it more than worth their while to include him in it.
I'd make the same argument against including Snake in Smash, as he had not appeared in ANY new games on a Nintendo platform since the GameCube back in 2004. Sure, there was a port of one of the games on 3DS, but unlike the rival consoles (including the PSP), the 3DS version was not issued a "collection", but rather, a single port for the same price as the other systems. A poor value proposition akin to EA's idiotic decision to release Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, a platform without any other Mass Effect games whatsoever, while EA saw fit to release the complete trilogy on every rival platform. It's no wonder these games fail commercially on Nintendo platforms when publishers keep screwing Nintendo over by releasing inferior products.
And as for Ryu, I had forgotten about his appearance in Project X Zone, but that game in itself is a "who's who" of other franchises and is not a game that Ryu would be particularly well known for. Inclusion of third party characters shouldn't just be a courtesy on Nintendo's end. These characters should be making their main series entries on Nintendo platforms as well.
It seems silly to include third party characters who have had virtually no presence on Nintendo systems in Smash, given its popularity and the fact that it has helped boost the popularity of franchises that may not have received as much exposure otherwise (such as the Fire Emblem and Earthbound series).
As little as I care for them, Sonic and Pac-Man made sense because new entries in their respective franchises are being released on both 3DS and Wii U to this day. Mega Man? Well, Capcom's not exactly supporting him on ANY platform at the moment (apart from ports of old games). In short, I'm saying that if third party support from major publishers has been reduced to just DLC of characters who are known more so for appearing on rival platforms, then I'd rather do without. Hell, I wouldn't mind a Dead or Alive character or two appearing on the roster, but I'd rather that their main series games come to Nintendo systems first (and as much as I loved Dead or Alive: Dimensions, I wouldn't see that lone release as significant enough to justify including any of their characters in Smash, even though I'd really, really want them to).
Looks like a okay addition (and unexpected), but yeah its yet ANOTHER swordfighter. Personally I would rather see Professor Layton and King Rool (that last one is sadly impossible, since Nintendo has chosen for a stupid Mii-outfit)!
@faint Your rationale for this is incredibly weak and superficial. No other third-party character appearing in Smash has only appeared in a (very) minor role in a game on a Nintendo system; trying to defend his inclusion in Smash with this is irrelevant and borders on (unnecessary) desperation. It's understandable that you may have a strong attachment to the character, but that is not a logical defense for his inclusion, either.
I literally couldn't fathom how this had even become a thing. Not that I'm complaining ;D I just never heard anyone mention wanting Cloud for Smash that badly. I wonder -if he is a result of the Smash Ballot- how he placed.
@SanderEvers Can't have Lightning where there are no clouds. ;D
It's the first updated Cloud model since the original game that I like. Nice job, Sakurai
@kurtasbestos
"Obviously Nintendo chose Cloud because they completely ran out of characters from their own games to use. Bleargh."
And lo, roaring laughter was had. Cloud is cross-promotion, but "running out of characters" is a completely nonsensical explanation. As in, 4chan-levels of nonsense. Looks like a troll comment to me, but I won't judge.
@sillygostly
Good point there. Smash Bros. is indeed a "who's who" of Nintendo characters, but any complaints about it becoming more than that have become a rather moot point after Brawl. Additionally, after the whole "as long as they debuted in the gaming medium, go for it" rule of the ballot, and given how much Nintendo themselves stressed the point of the absence of "off-limits" characters, the possibility of fans voting for exclusively-Nintendo characters, while still present, has been outnumbered by the other possibilities the ballot opened. Why? If I had to take a wild guess, I'd point at the fact Super Smash Bros.'s third-party character roster is still outnumbered by the Ninty guys to begin with, given the point of the games is still that. Besides, the number of planned DLC characters - if the "perfect grid theory" (as pointed out in an Etika video, adding five or six characters creates a perfect rectangle in both the WiiU version and in the 3DS one) is anything to go by - is neither too low or too high. It's low enough to make sure no character slots will go to waste (and given some characters running around in Smash this time around, I wouldn't count - by comparison - Cloud to be a waste anytime soon), which is the entire point of the ballot in the first place, nor is it too high to make sure to please as many fans as possible. Additionally, from Brawl onwards, Super Smash Bros. had two points: the first point of Smash being the aforementioned "who's who", and the new, second one consisting of Smash being a gathering point for gaming legends all across the medium, no matter which console they're from. Which is already a more admirable feat than anything PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has ever accomplished (barring the handheld debut: with the Vita version, they actually beat Nintendo to that one). As for your other points, the hope of seeing Square-Enix give a sugar-honey-iced-tea about Nintendo again is the same here.
@Yosher
No need to be salty about it, though, due to the various points I've reported in this very comment. I'm not overly hyped for Cloud, myself, mind you - I don't feel the "need" to have him in the game, but I'm still very glad we're getting the JRPG representative (even more than Shulk, himself already a good starting point, ever was). "The" being in bold due to Final Fantasy being THE japanese role-playing game series, and by extension, Final Fantasy VII being THE Final Fantasy game (as much as it pains me to admit this, given I still am a mainly Nintendo fan - not that I dislike the PlayStation, mind you: my NL profile page says just as much). The only way to be bitter about Cloud, is to be bitter about Final Fantasy VII never having been on a Nintendo console, or, to be more precise - not to mention justified - any main numbered FF game since then never having been on a Nintendo console. If we were to pick the most relevant FF game on Nintendo consoles, Cecil or Terra would have been in, presumably both due to neither being more iconic than the other. But given the general rule so far seems to be one guy per franchise (since the previous one, "one guy per company", has been Shoryuken'd out of the way), they might as well have picked the most iconic character in the entire FF franchise, making Cloud the go-to guy.
@WaveGhoul
Now that is a sore point, and a criticism I can agree on for once. Despite not being possible due to the protagonist of the game being preferable to a side character (read: Zidane would have gotten in if that was the case), I just love Black Mages, their design and, by extension, Vivi himself. Still, outside the two Theatrhythm games, Vivi has never been sighted on any Nintendo console, which makes him even more of a no-no than (by applying the same reasoning) people make Cloud out to be. There would be Kingdom Hearts II, but then again, Square-Enix flat-out refuses to release any Kingdom Hearts game with a Roman numeral in its title on anything else than a Hogstation... er, than a PlayStation console, so I guess once again we're "stuck" with Cloud.
Answers to other comments aside, I hope Sakurai (fun fact: the SSB director shares the same last name as Cloud's japanese VA. Look it up!) will just go wild with Cloud's alts. We already have:
but there are also these...
and, as a wild guess already mentioned in one of the first comments on SmashBoards due to Linkle's reveal in Hyrule Warriors Legends,
Hopefully we'll get these. Any palette swap would be lazy (then again, I'm already glad the Advent Children costume made it in).
@Caryslan Dude, don't be obtuse. That is "dumping Nintendo like a pile of bricks". You understand the phrase is a metaphor, and not literal. Also, if memory serves me correctly, Square announced it was moving the game to PS at E3, which was apparently a total shock to the staff at Nintendo, or something like that—in the exact same way that Nintendo did with Sony and the original PlayStation CD-ROM add-on for SNES. Square dumped Nintendo like a pile of bricks. End of.
@duffmmann Nah people need to let Geno go. A one off character in a one off game. He's in a similiar situation to K.Rool; irrelevant and not even in the recent games.
Following your train of thought, the most logical Square character would have been Tiz or Agnes from Bravely Default, seeing how that is a Nintendo exclusive series with a sequel due out shortly.
I'm pumped for Cloud though.
@Mogster
I dunno, I wouldn't put Geno and K.Rool on the same boat.
this is wishful thinking but Cloud is now in Smash and the FFVII Re-Make Trailer said FIRST on PS4, now every one is assuming XB1 (doubt this one myself) or PC (quite possible as the original is on there) but dare i say it "a NX release?"
It's am odd choice, but it's good to have. I've not played FF, but it's still going to be great fun to try him out.
Ad for whether this will mean FF VI coming to Nintendo consoles, I doubt this means anything. After all, Sakurai showed a picture of the Rayman trophy before Smash 4 was released, and I'm still waiting for him to be announced as a character.
@FullbringIchigo Well square already announced those two Dragon Quest games will be coming to NX, so I reckon FF7 has a pretty good shot at it! Hopefully KH3 as well, then I'll be able to skip buying a PS4 altogether
What's up with "NOT ANOTHER SWORDSMAN!" comments? There's about 11 swordsman on the roster. Now compare that to the 40 characters in the game that don't use swords. I don't get it.
And what the hell is up with the K. Rool hate in here? I'm really confused by all of it. He's a loved villain from a popular Nintendo series... what's there to hate exactly? Because he's a popular requested character? If so, that's ridiculous. There are way more requested characters out there that are more popular than K. Rool. You're pretty much hating the underdog for no reason, which is kind of pathetic. Direct your hate towards the characters people want in because "muh bandwagon", and not the characters that people are really passionate about wanting in. Absolutely ridiculous.
NINTENDO MY WALLET. YOU KEEP MAKING IT EMPTY.
@Sillygostly:
Just like Street Fighter or Mega Man, The Final Fantasy series aswell started their "video-gameproducing-career" on Nintendo consoles. Cloud just happen to be the most famous and rememberable of all FF-characters. I personally prefer the smash team to put in Cloud over any other Final Fantasy character and I also prefer them puting in one of the most "important" gaming character in the industry to the roster before throwing in any other boring and irrelevant nintendo-own-character (as there isn't enough of them already from nintendo)
Since you don't even know who Cloud is (can't really understand you then being bothered from the character), which is your favourite yet to join, makes me wonder?
To Others:
Why craving for characters from this gen to the smash roster who barely have any video-game preferences than just the present?
To me it's important that when they pick a third party character, it better be a huge one and a rememberable one from the complete gaming history and not just from one present appearance because it has been on a Nintendo console.
@MitchVogel It is interesting to see this alongside the rumours of Dragon Quest on the NX... could be a sign of things to come. Maybe Nintendo are luring SE back.
@Caryslan "Stick it to Sony"? Yeah, that'll really show them, apart from the fact that Final Fantasy VII is getting an exclusive Playstation 4 remake. Just like Ryu is so gonna piss off those Sony fans who will be playing the actual SFV early next year.
And if you think Yamauchi would applaud this, you probably didn't really follow the man's actions during his presidency. Final Fantasy VII is one of the most infamous double-crossings he ever suffered at Nintendo, making him go as far as say he'd never work with Square Enix again. In fact, SE wouldn't have another game on a Nintendo console until Iwata's presidency.
Plus, what @sillygostly said.
The point I think is that I (or someone like me) that never played or watched a smash game (even though I have a lot of rpg, adventure and vc games for my 3DS) the inclusion of a fan favourite character made me check reviews and videos from a game that seemed meh to me. Obviously I may never go on and buy the game but some others maybe. The audience may be small but there is some.
There was some interest trolling. "PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale for Wii U", "Browser on the FF7 remake for PS4", "Characters of Last Guardian will make the debut on Smash" were one of the best quotes I found.
Good character and looking good for future FF titles coming too Nintendo platforms.
@ricklongo It's not exclusive. The announcement said "first on PS4", implying Xbox One/PC/possibly NX release at a later date.
@KO-Cub If you want to get down to it, the majority of released Kingdom Hearts games (not counting re-releases/upcoming titles) have been on Nintendo handhelds.
Forget Lucas, Cloud comes out of Nowhere!
I really hope that this could be a foreshadow of the possibility the Final Fantasy Series making it back on the Nintendo home consoles.
I can't believe people are complaining about this. Dream come true for me.
And you know every Smash fighter so far is getting amiibo. CLOUD amiibo maybe? Yes please.
Even I'm pumped about this and I'm not a final fantasy fan in the slightest.
@Kirk
Yes, you are correct, Squaresoft quite abruptly left the Nintendo camp, however there's quite a story behind it. You see, back in the 90's the relationship between Squaresoft and Nintendo were, well, quite "complicated", you might say.
Nintendo back then was constantly meddling with the Square's development process, forcing them to rush things, taking over creative control (the case of Super Mario RPG) and downright refusing to let SS use a bigger ROM cartridges, forcing them to cut/scrap the game's content, in order to fit it on the smaller space.
Oh the other hand Squaresoft was quite... vocal about Nintendo. Quoting one source "Nao Suzuki (the back-then CEO of Squaresoft) responded by publicly bashing the N64 and convincing Enix to join the PS camp along with them, which, looking back at it now, he realizes wasn't an incredibly smart move."
So, to be honest, I'm kinda glad they parted ways for a short while, sorted things out, and started co-operating again.
Did anybody notice that when it said special broadcast, the letters had the colors of King K. Rool and Shantae?
@Henmii but, the colors for "special brodcast" were of king k rool and Shantae
Cool character, but not a series I'm interested in. Can't wait until the broadcast!
EDIT: Guys, Cloud wasn't a ballot character. He couldn't've been made (along with his stage) in the span of a month.
@ShulkTime
Don't get your hopes up over a few colours of rainbow text which are similar to the ones used in a lot of smash bros.. This is how you set yourself up for disappointment.
@Gridatttack I agree... He looks kinda op... Specifically his limit break power, unless that's going to be a second Final Smash, like Ryu got. He looks like a not fair mix of hard-hitting and quick, and that ungodly FAir... If he works like in the trailer, he's gonna be getting Spikes all day.
@CapeSmash
I couldn't have said it better myself.
To all the people who are complaining about Cloud only having minor appearances on a Nintendo console:
The game is called Super Smash Bros., not Nintendo All-Stars. Even the Smash ballot encouraged people to vote for ANY character.
@fluggy Think of it like this. Hes a character no one expected to be in Smash, Has very little to do with Nintendo. And this just proves that when Sakuria said any character from a video game, he meant it. Sure it may be an overcrowded game, but that doesn't remove the fact that Clouds gonna be 1 badA addition.
@4sterr Also my theory is that Clouds move set changes with his outfit. As we can see hes wearing both the Original ff7 clothes, and the clothes from crisis core. I Think, been a while since I played. But as we can see he has a ton of different moves, plus summon ability's. So its possible they they could of took a Ryu approach to Cloud and add something new to smash. Like how Ryu has the combo attacks, Cloud could have different moves based on the either the original or Crisis Core outfit he wears. This would then add some more variety to the character itself. and also give some fan service to fans of both the original, and Crisis Core. But that's just my theory anyways. Well see in December what the real deal is.
Huh, okay. Wasn't expecting him, but why not. He's one of, if not THE, most memorable protagonist in FF history. In a weird way, Smash is like how I perceived the Muppet Show as a kid, i.e. if you were anybody you did the Muppet show.
@AyeHaley Better than a PS1 Metal Gear character.
Good for FF fans I guess, which I'm not.
Besides that there are already way to many anime sword-fighters in Smash Bros...
In my day we had 12 playable characters. They were all Nintendo characters (pretty much the whole point, right?) and that's the way it was and we liked it. None of this Sonic balderdash or Megaman hooey. No Snake guy from some Call of Duty crap. This series has officially jumped the shark.
@whiskeydave
Why the nostalgia filter, now? No one is forcing anyone to play as anyone other than the original twelve, especially given that due to the uninterrupted streak of appearance of the original cast (read: no one skipped any installments), it's now safe to assume we'll see the entire 64 gang in all future games in the series. Roster-wise, the original game will always be there.
[reads accurately the comment]
"Snake guy from some Call of Duty crap"... wait, I almost fell for it like some shmuck. You were just pulling a Cranky Kong, weren't you.
@AlexSora89
Just being an old crab. Still, things seem so much less focused these days. I couldn't care less anyway. I've got a floor to paint now!
Way to completely misinterpret what your fans want, Nintendo. Yet another failure. Disgusting.
@SupremeAllah
I can't understand all of you people ranting about "sword weilders". Since when is a sword a bad thing?
Do want more Pokemon!? How about another "magic user" because by your logic, we have like 50 of them already. Not to mention the countless fist-fighters we already have, and gunners as well!
And seeing as literally NOBODY was expecting this, and Cloud was all but nowhere to be seen in the Ballot polls, I'd say that this was most certainly not just something to "please the fanboys".
I must admit, I'm rather excited! He looks like a really unique Fighter. And Cloud is a really neat character anyway.
(Contrary to popular belief, he is not just an emo-anime turd with spiky hair. People always see him for his Advent Children appearance, which is a much more emo portrayal of him. But in the game, he's actually a rather chipper dude all things considered.)
@Li_Bae
Naturally, this character only appeals to FF fans, and I get that. But that is hardly a reason to be "disgusted". Here's a bright idea, how about you just... Not buy the DLC
@whiskeydave
Have fun then!
@AlexSora89
Well nice to see you too again, fellow Isaac supporter. I do really want Isaac (all my votes went to him) to get in Smash, but I don't mind other characters as long as they don't impede his inclusion. I don't see Cloud as a competitor for Isaac since he has an almost complete sword based move set with a few Limit Breaks, whereas Isaac has potential for a huge Venus psynergy based moveset.
Sure they have blond spiky hair and a sword, along with RPG origins, but that is where their similarity ends. Plus, Cloud seems like a pre-ballot character, probably a good sign of some deal between Square Enix and Nintendo. And it would definitely be downright hilarious if cross-dressing Cloud gets a costume (which I really doubt) but the AC Cloud and FF7 Cloud seem sufficient enough.
I have decent hopes for the Smash broadcast in December since Isaac still seems like a fairly popular ballot entry, is Nintendo exclusive and has huge potential for a non-sword based psynergy moveset. If need be, they can just replace Isaac's sword with an axe or a mace. Hence he can be Smash's only Axeman or Maceman
I will probably still enjoy Cloud when I get Smash this year. He looks somewhat like Ike in terms of usage, albeit having more ranged moves.
Um... my reaction that I'm going tp be posting on my youtube channel is probably going to saying that all that needs to be said.
there will be screaming..
@fluggy Heh, because it's not every day where a character of your choosing gets to join much let duke it out with the gaming greats. Not saying you have to be as hyped as us or care about this guy but show some appreciation that one more character gets added to the roster to the fighting game of your wildest dreams.
@AlexSora89 gulp I'm...going to take your word for it.
@Captain_Toad
I've been... talkative on this article, to say the least. Which word are you referring to?
@Li_Bae
Yeah, how dare Nintendo include the main character of the most successful game in one of gaming's most legendary RPG franchises. Absolutely awful, Nintendo is so out of touch, they should be ashamed
@AlexSora89 The part with the smashboards
@LasermasterA
In a worst-case scenario (which of course I hope won't happen), at least Cloud - due to the very same superficial similarities - is a good stand-in for Isaac, though. They look similar, and they both represent JRPGs. Although, then again, Isaac would be a nice addition for this very reason: as Nintendo's own spiky-haired, blond, magical swordsman, once he gets in the game he'll be more likely to pop up in the sequels considering that, in Cloud's case, Nintendo would have to negotiate the rights again. Besides, I'm positive his absence as an Assist Trophy this time around - if anything - makes his character debut even more likely: here's hoping Sakurai will "pull a Little Mac" and upgrade Isaac as well, from Assist Trophy to full-fledged Smasher.
As for my statement regarding Cloud being a stand-in for Isaac in case the latter doesn't make it, though, I don't mean to dash your hopes, mind you: I'm ready to do the same in the case Sora doesn't make the cut! Even if Isaac makes it in instead of Sora, I will gladly settle with Cloud as Square's only rep (despite Sora's rights technically belonging to Disney, it's obvious Sora would represent Square as well).
Side note: I can't wait to see Cloud's character poster on the Smash website. I've been dreaming to see Mario and the others drawn by Tetsuya Nomura ever since the Mario Hoops 3-on-3/Mario Slam Basketball days, although a Yoshitaka Amano poster would be cool as well, in its own, weird way.
@Captain_Toad
Take the Cloud criticism on this article, make it more vocal, a lot ruder, and you basically get the Cloud thread on Smashboards. Which reminds me to congratulate once again with @LasermasterA's reply in the thread's first page - he hasn't just been cool about it, he's been downright classy. And I wish I could say the same about anyone else there.
When I saw Cloud appear I broke my windows when I screamed. Don't worry I screamed cause I was shocked and happy. (still want Shantae though. Come on Dec Direct!)
@Soren it could just be an early version of him similar to fire emblem x shin megami tensei crossover trailers we first saw
Couldn't be happier with the choice. It's Cloud Strife! I mean seriously! I love Nintendo characters and the celebration of it's characters, but honestly that my favorite characters like Link get to fight against a gaming icon like Cloud is a dream come true. It's exactly what I want as a fan of the game and Nintendo. Also, his level/music will be insane.
@Setery10 Good point. Let's hope it's an early version and not final.
omg.....there are people who think Sony should sue Nintendo over this?
Well I am not fan of FF Characters design but this stage looks absolutely epic.
@Ralphi
Well He was fighting against him in screwsattack Death Battle.
@Ralizah Woops, this isn't the poll result... Just Square cashing in. Knowing the history of FF7, this is bringing the events of 1995 full circle. Perhaps we may yet see the FF7 remake on the NX...
Really cool, will so be my new fave Smash character. A real surprise since he has only been in two games on Nintendo systems to my knowledge, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded & Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. But with Smash and Final Fantasy Explorers, that be a total of four games.
@Discostew
I wouldn't doubt it. Ignorance abounds when things like this happen.
@Li_Bae That's right! Who wants Mega Man, Sonic, Ryu, or Cloud. What a horrible idea for Nintendo to include non Nintendo characters in SSB.
I guess you don't like fun surprises or have some extreme case of brand loyalty.
Well Cloud has been on Nintendo handhelds for a while:
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for GBA
Theatryhthm Final Fantasy for 3DS
Theatryhthm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call for 3DS
Final Fantasy Explorers for 3DS
I guess having him for Super Smash Bros. is a great addition. Besides Final Fantasy VII was suppose to be an N64 game in the first place, it just happens to end up on the PlayStation.
"Hey my choice wasn't announced for Smash therefore it's a poor choice."
There's no rule saying the character should only be in Smash if it appeared in a Nintendo console game. Nintendo approved these choices because they think it's good for them and for their target audience.
@retro_player_22
@Splatburst
Good luck making other people realize that... and in case anyone wonders, no, I'm not a Cloud fanboy, despite how outright cool having Cloud in is. I'm just... speechless for how many people are mad at this choice, despite the fact it's just more content for our games. The more, the merrier, no? Apparently no, I guess.
@Salnax
Yea, a character from the most overhyped Final Fantasy game in the series is much better than the unique character that Snake was to play as.
@retro_player_22
You should add Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded for the DS in your screenshot list. People tend to forget to mention that game due to the flak it got for being a supposedly "pointless" addition to the series, but in that game, Cloud was a party member.
Also, you should swap the Chain Of Memories screenshot with the last line of dialogue in that scene: Cloud's incredibly creepy "Big mistake.", his way to tell us he was going to wipe the floor with us. Still gives me shivers today.
@J-Manix98
Do you have certain data about the Ballot and how Cloud (because someone certainly voted for him) was presumably ranking low in it? Since he was "nowhere to be seen in the polls", I took your comment as "nowhere to be seen in the ballot", which would be a huge relief for those hoping for more and more characters.
Still, I have a feeling we won't get "just" Cloud next month. I feel there's gonna be a returning veteran.
@AlexSora89
No, the Ballot status was, as far as I understand, not made visible to the public. I think the way people have been gauging the popularity of certain characters, is by holding their own polls and asking people who voted, who they voted for.
That is 100% speculation though. I just remember seeing an unnoficial chart with a bunch of character stats and percentages on it, that was pretty extensive. And I never saw Cloud on there.
So I other words, take my words with a rather large grain of salt. Haha!
But I think you are right! We will most likely see a multitude of new fighters in next months Smash direct.
@Chaotic_Eevee Since when did Sony ever decide what Square Enix could do with their IPs? XIII and XI have been on the 360 which basically gave them free reign to do whatever the Hell they want with Final Fantasy.
Also, the GameCube, DS and Wii have been exclusive hosts to the Crystal Chronicles universe of the Final Fantasy franchise. There have also been the ports of Final Fantasy I through VI on the GBA as well as the 3D remakes of III and IV on the DS.
You think Sony would've let Square Enix get away with doing that with Nintendo if they really had control of them?
I think is great news! Cloud is really famous and is a great addition to the roster.
People who say he isn't significant and is for playstation fans only is bull crap.
I bet tons of you kids never even played Duck Hunt and yet you appreciate the character.
Cloud was the first big ass sword fighter I have seen and you can see Shulk is heavily inspired by Cloud. Cloud is the original bad ass Great Sword wielder.

@J-Manix98
Multitude, maybe not so much. But four or five? Entirely plausible! Returning veterans that got the shaft such as un-splittable Ice Climbers/Popo on his own, Wolf, or Snake would be a nice way to wrap things up, while a few surprises might show up as the often-asked for Shovel Knight, Shantae, Sora or, as I and @LasermasterA hope, Isaac from Golden Sun.
Also, I'm saying "four or five" due to the "perfect grid" theory demonstrated by Etika - by adding a few more characters, both the 3DS version and the WiiU version will get a perfect character grid.
@AlexSora89 I add what I know about Cloud for Nintendo system, you know anything more, you could add your two cents. Other than Cloud though I am still hoping for at least one of these character by next year:
I still want Shadow, or at least Eggman. :/
@retro_player_22
Cloud still seemed unlikely (more like, people didn't even think of his chances) to many since he has only been seen in spin-offs in a minor role (all the ones you listed). Plus, like you said, as FF7 was planned on N64, but shifted to PS1, there was some "strife" between Square Enix and Nintendo, making his chances even less. Guess it bodes well for Nintendo and SE's future relations, since he got in. I might as well use him as I did like FF7, and to an extent its compilation.
Well with the special Smash broadcast coming up, we might as well see multiple characters from your list. I doubt many more 3rd party additions though considering the high bar Nintendo is setting for 3rd party characters.
Multiple first party characters who did good on the ballot seem likely. Hopefully Isaac is among them. May the (Golden) Sun shine on his chances!
@AlexSora89
Yea hoping for the favourable result, i.e. Isaac being playable as DLC, with the best result being him getting a stage like Venus Lighthouse and a Felix/Matthew alt costume.
Isaac for Smash (DLC)!
@LasermasterA
You should check this out. I haven't fully forgiven Artsy Omni yet, but credit where it's due - this should give you some goosebumps:

Crash Bandicoot would cause my inner kid to cry tears of joy until I die from dehydration. Alas, what with him being the former mascot of PlayStation (even moreso than Cloud), even his Nintendo appearances (such as the GBA games, which wonderfully captured the spirit of the original games) aren't enough to make such a suggestion likely. Then again, the first time I saw Cloud was on a "Never underestimate the power of PlayStation" poster on the door of a gaming store ("Big Fun") I used to visit as a kid (and I still occasionally do), so I wouldn't rule out anything at this point (I'm looking at you, Sora).
Speaking of more likely suggestions ("likely" due to their significance as Nintendo and/or Nintendo-ish characters - again, not that it really matters anymore), Shantae, Shovel Knight, Rayman, Isaac, Bomberman, Travis, Layton, Phoenix, Klonoa, Goemon and Simon are the ones that make the most sense to me; as for additions to already represented franchises in Smash, instead, there are Ridley for Metroid, K.Rool for Donkey Kong, Tails for Sonic, Wolf for StarFox as a veteran, Ninten for EarthBound (less likely due to similarity to Ness), Sceptile for Pokémon and I don't know who else.
My hopes at the moment are for Sora, Isaac, and Popo. Any platformer hero is welcome, but these three are the guys that matter the most to me.
