Tabletop gaming is a big part of broader gaming culture, now often found in its own areas at expos and events. Naturally there can be crossovers, too, with video game franchises being shifted to tabletops and vice-versa; this natural mix seems to have been a source of inspiration for one keen BattleCON fan.

BattleCON seems to be a fairly popular series of card-based games, with variations seemingly finding funding almost at will through Kickstarter campaigns. Now, in a lower key effort than some big-budget versions, an eager fan has begun work on a Smash Bros. amiibo-driven version of the game. The key is, admittedly, in print-them-yourself cards and a board, with the amiibo effectively acting as static figurines to represent the characters on the board. There's no NFC trickery here, just simple card-based gaming.

So far there are four characters - Bowser, Rosalina, Link, Mario - and "redesigned bases, a portable board, and some life trackers" available to download. Creator Aljo Martinez is sharing progress and sourcing support and ideas from the community over at boardgamegeek.com, so it'll be interesting to see how far it gets.

It's always nice to see fans finding creative ways to enjoy Nintendo characters, games and now amiibo. BattleCON is just another way to celebrate Smash Bros., which is no bad thing.
