We know this is a Nintendo Japan illustration, but it looks cool and has fireworks

Today is a notable Holiday for Nintendo Life readers in the US, as it's Independence Day. Writing this as a Brit, your humble writer is pleased that bygones are bygones and that battles of the past are now blown away in a cacophony of fireworks. We're all winners.

If you're not in the US, however, today's just another weekend day, but that's swell too. If you're lucky it's even raining outside, which means you can play Nintendo games while confident that the outside world won't pass judgement on you for failing to go outside.

As for games relevant to the US occasion. Assassin's Creed III quite literally allows rebellious Americans to brutally murder and overthrow cartoon cut-out British villains. You know the types, the evil ones with the great accents.

If you're looking to be a little less aggressive, however, we do have the first Splatoon Splatfest this weekend, with different questions to consider in Europe and North America. Are you Team Dog or Team Cat? Team Pop or Team Rock? Hit up that link above if you're unsure of how to jump into the Splatfest when it launches today.

As for games with great fireworks, two classics spring to mind. Super Mario Bros. sets off fireworks at the end of a stage if the timer ends with 1, 3 or 6, or more recently Super Mario 3D World does the same. In fact, this awesome wiki page outlines all Mario games - including spin-offs - that have fireworks.

Or you can just play whatever you want, that works too.

In any case, a happy 4th of July to all of our readers from the US, and a happy weekend / Saturday to everyone else!
