Mario Party 10 is upon us, and after so many entries you'd think Nintendo wouldn't have anything more to add to the formula. Enter Bowser Party and amiibo Party, two modes that make the most of some of the Wii U's hardware features to shake up the Mario Party formula.
In Bowser Party, one player takes the role of the King of the Koopas himself, in order to get the ever-present Superstar and win the game. All new GamePad-focused minigames await you in this boardgame battle. Meanwhile, amiibo Party allows you to use supported amiibo, bringing a new twist to Mario Party.
We've produced a couple of videos to explain what these modes are all about, so enjoy!

Okay, that's all fine and good, but what is the main mode like? Have we finally gone back to the Mario Party 1-7 formula where the boards were great and it was 20 coins for a star, or are we still in this midlife crisis formula where everyone moves at once and nothing makes sense?
@EvilChameleon you'll have to wait for our review tomorrow sir
Do you have to use Wii remotes or can you use Pro Controllers for this?
@FragRed Wii Remotes only, I'm afraid!
@Captain_Gonru - 37 seconds into the video it says each player needs their own amiibo. That's just lazy, even by my low standards
We own 2 amiibo, Starfox and the original Link, neither of which are supported.
There have only been what, about 16 amiibo so far, they coudln't support them all? Skylanders has over 100 toys, and each one has been available to play in each new game. And the data doesn't get over written you can just keep leveling up and buying new skills.
My kids probably don't want their amiibo SSBU data erased anyway. No back-up program?
I'd like to say amiibo support in this game seems like an afterthought, but it's actually worse than that.
As much as i really like the mario party games, my friends have lost interest in them, so until MP gets wifi support I'm afraid I can no longer buy these games and enjoy them to the fullest.
Even if this won't have online play, I'm hoping for some DLC. More boards, and more mini-games.
I am not interested in the game but I am dying to get these amiibo.
Nintendo, listen here. It's 2015 and this game:
1. No Online
2. No online
3. No online
4. No online
5. No online.
What the hell dude? If this game had an online mode I would've bought it in a jiffy. Not to mention this game has no single player element to it whatsoever. Without these two features, meh I'll get it when we're really bored with NintendoLand and Wii Party U I guess.
Damn I really miss the original bomberman land on the PS1. That is one party game I will never forget.
Amiibo mode is as close to the classic Mario Party style as we'll get. I would hope Nintendo updates the Wii U to have an amiibo backup system that can be accessed from the home menu so when we do have to do it we don't have to exit the middle of a game to pull it off.
I'm a single girl, whose an only child, who doesn't have a room mate in college. I can't think of a game that would suit me less than this one.
Well, the amiibo mode does look fun, but it's not worth it to erase the data on my amiibos for now. I am disappointed, mainly because I would have figured Nintendo could have create a back up system by now. It seems dumb that I have to erase my Smash fighter just to have the ability to save "tokens" to it. I am sure Nintendo will fix this problem eventually, but I will only use the main function of the game for now.
@Captain_Gonru : In terms of functionality, "Smash" Mario and "Super Mario" Mario should be identical (i.e. the data in the NFC chip should be exactly the same between the two variations as well as any future variations that may be released, such as the leaked Gold and Silver Mario amiibo figurines). I strongly doubt that you'd be able to use two or more of the same character in the game as I don't believe that that has ever been permitted in any previous Mario Party games.
The amiibo can be distinguished by the system as they have their own unique ID data written to them (including Mii/Nickname data) and you should be able to use as many identical amiibo figures in say Super Smash Bros, but in Mario Party, where each player needs to be distinguished by a separate character, I don't believe that this will be possible in Mario Party 10.
@Captain_Gonru - Well now dont I feel like an idiot. Dont know why I read duplicate as usung the same one more than once, sorry about that.
And now I feel more stupid b/c I cant even answer your question. It would mske sense that if a friend w/ Mario brought him over you could both play as Mario w/ your respective amiibo, but since this is Nintendo, and the game already has all the issues I mentioned above, Im guessing know. We do have several variants of Skylanders - 3 or 4 Spyro and a few Trigger Happy - and I know more than 1 of those can be used at once.
Apologies again for my lack of reading conprehension.
Ugh. I will likely pick this up at some point because for some reason I love this series, even though the last few have made some really stupid changes. Will we ever return to the explicit fun and wonder that was Mario Party 2? Having a cutscene revealing the superstar before anyone really knows who won defeating Bowser in some nefarious scheme based on the board, I mean come on!
I've never been particularly keen on the home console instalments of Mario Party 10, but I'm keen on this mainly because of 5 player multiplayer, and the amiibo integration makes this one feel more than a board game than ever before. I wish that they had called it Bowser Party as a change of pace (or even Bowser Party: Mario Party 10).
Little disappointed with No Online Mode. Annoyed at the fact you need to delete the save of your Smash Bros Amiibos that are compatible with this, to use them. I will still be buying this to see how it is for myself anyway.
@EmmatheBest Online mode would have been great for people like us
Don't forget people, there is actually a "party" mode hidden in Smash Bros under "Games and More". I'll be sure to try it out next time my friend comes over (which is rarely btw). Regardless, as an adult gamer who rarely has friends over to play with, and the total lack of online in MP10, I have little reason to get it.
From a single player perspective, Amiibo have added so much depth and replay value to Smash Bros U. Also I don't know about Mario Party, but I bought a spare Mario Amiibo, and confirmed you can use multiples of the same Amiibo character in Smash Bros U. I believe you can scan up to 8 Amiibo at a time, in any combination of supported characters.
Also I can't help but notice Waluigi and Daisy are playable in Mario Party but have nothing announced yet. There are two [?] blocks on the Amiibo screen. Possible future inclusion, perhaps?
On the Amiibo party video the computer controlled players had 2D paper cut out figures on the board, do you think this is what the Amiibo cards could be like? I always assumed they would be just like trading cards but they could be pop out shapes on thick card with the chip in a base section.
@EvilChameleon Been pretty much confirmed it works like Mario Party 9, in that everyone travels around in a car in the normal mode. It was shown in a trailer.
Also all the maps are point to point by the looks, not circuits like the older (better) games.
@Jenraux That's exactly right. Only amiibo Party reverts to the classic individual movements and cyclical boards.
@Captain_Gonru - "it would make sense to allow multiple Marios"
I think you already know my response when using the word "sense" to describe anything Ntinedo does
I do wholeheartedly agree w/ you, that should be the way it works. Going back to my Skylanders comparison (sorry, it's what I know) when you put a new Skylander on the portal if asks if you want to take ownership. I'd think amiibo would work the same way. It's actually funny we're having this conversation now, Nintendo just announced a huge tournament in Japan of amiibo vs amiibo, people must be using the same type of amiibo, no? Though I suppose what works in SSBU may not work in MP10.
I think the review is supposed to be out today, hopefully they'll answer your question then.
@rjejr I have tested SSBU with two Mario Amiibo and it works. It took two 99-stock matches (at 2.0x launch rate) to level up the new Amiibo to level 50 by playing against my old level 50 Amiibo. And the new student could easily beat it's master after reaching level 50, so Amiibo trained Amiibo are apparently stronger than human/CPU trained Amiibo. Also, if you decide to play duplicate Amiibo characters against each other in Smash, it's a good idea to use alternate outfits/colors on the Amiibo characters so you can tell them apart. I'm not getting MP10 so I have no idea if duplicate Amiibo work or not.
@rjejr 29. 29, plus the already announced Wave 4 (6) and first wave of SMB (7).
@StarDust4Ever - Well good to have a real - as in tested, not rumoured on the net - answer to the SBBU question, guess we'll have to wait for MP10. It really should work the same way though, especially if only a few amiibo work in game.
@PolarKoalaBear - Funny you should mention that, I looked at my sons wall this morning - he has the 4 promotional posters on his wall, 1 from each game - and a rough estimate got me to nearly 200 Skylanders characters, about 48 per game not counting the skins. Plus, Swap Force had 16 swappable ones which I think made anther 256, which would mean there are about 400 playable Skalandes in Trap Team, plus another 47 trappable and playable villains or about 450 playable characters in 1 game.
Surely Nintendo could have made 29 amiibo playable in Mario Party 10?
Well, about amiibo party, you only need one amiibo and other players can use paper amiibos if they want to.
I would be much more interested in amiibo Party if the board wasn't just a freakin' square.
What is with everyone making such a big stink about online play? It's Mario Party. Do you really think it's that well suited to going online, or is it just the principle of Nintendo being behind the times (or whatever) that's gotten you all up in a tizzy?
