The New 3DS and New 3DS XL have a cool Easter Egg hidden away in their web browsing software.
The hidden treat — discovered by Instagram user 345triangle — requires you to tap the opening of the Super Mario Bros. theme tune and then select a page from your bookmarks. The page is then rendered as the classic title Breakout — which Nintendo would clone as the Game Boy release Alleyway.
You can watch it in action below:
The New 3DS and New 3DS XL launched in Japan earlier this year, and hit Australia in November. The North American and European launches are expected next year. You can read what we thought about the machine here, as well as watch out unboxing and hands-on here.

Too bad hardly anyone uses the Web browser.
Dang... Nintendo knows that it's these little things that make me want their new console more and more.
@Joruus_Cbaoth The Wii U browser, on the other hand, I use all the time.
even better easter egg... go to Google and enter "do a barrel roll"
How was that even the rhythm to the opening of SMB?!! 8-/
@MK_II Go to google and type Zergling Rush...I just had my mind blown
@Mk_II
More relevant easter egg, go to Google Image Search, and search "Atari Breakout"
Nice!
That's pretty cool, guess it's time to actually open the web browser.
Does this only work with the Japanese system? No luck getting it to work on mine.
@Kit lol yeah. i was questioning that too
"early this year"? it was released last month!
@Joruus_Cbaoth It's not perfect, but it's great for looking up random Pokemon and Monster Hunter info without grabbing the iPad or jumping on the computer.
@Joruus_Cbaoth I use the web browser all the time when i'm too lazy to go get my iPhone haha. Hopefully the New Nintendo 3DS's will be much faster.
I don't suppose they made the web browser any easier to connect to random hot spots did they? I tried getting my kids browsers online in a hotel once, way too much work compared to the tablets, netbooks and laptops I've used.
Can the NEW Nintendo 3DS play old regular Nintendo DS games?
@BenAV I can't get it to work either
When I always have my phone, tablet, and macbook close by there is no reason for me to get out of what I'm doing and use the browser.
@WiiLovePeace Well glad it's not just me failing then. Guess maybe it's just the Japanese systems then or something.
@KirbyKirbyKirby Yes, yes it can. The New 3DS can do everything the standard 3DS can do, doesn't lose any functionality.
@BenAV I dunno. I turned up my volume & the taps made don't even sound like the start of the Super Mario Bros. theme to me. I tried to replicate the taps as they were in the video but to no avail.It's either Japanese 3DS only or not even real, I'm bending towards fake at this point.
@hiptanaka I'm typing this very text on my gamepad now it's a fantastic browser, if they come close to this one with the new 3ds web browser, I might actually use it sometimes.
Try and try as I might, I can't reproduce this on my Australian New 3DS XL.
Exact same web browser welcome screen too, just in English.
I haved my browsers on my Wii U and 3ds each 1 time. They suck and I would rather just pull out my iPhone and leave me Nintendo ____ for gaming. and occasionally Netflix
Yeah, I call foul on this... can't reproduce it on my Aussie New 3DS XL either.
@6ch6ris6 @BenAV I think that's right. Andre of GameXplain had already proven it works, but I tried multiple times and it never worked for me.
@Joruus_Cbaoth Before I owned a smart phone, I used it all the time.
@Donutman you are the only person I've ever heard say the Wii U browser sucks , I love the browser on my Wii U I use it to surf the web more than I use my PC or smart phone to surf the web . The Wii U browser is awesome and the GamePad is a great fit to use it on, honestly I was shocked at how good the browser is on Wii U the first time I tried it out.
For the ultimate easter egg, go to google and search tub girl
@darthllama seriously don't, it's "crappy"
I've logged 1500+ hours on my 3DS web browser, so if the improved browser is half as good as Wii-U, I'm all for it!
I can confirm it working on my Japanese N3DS.
@Joruus_Cbaoth
The browser on the New 3DS is supposedly quite the improvement speed-wise over the one running on the old models.
Seriously thinking about importing a new 3ds xl from Australia
@hiptanaka the wii u browser is pretty awesome ain't it, I used to use it to watch my movies on plex all the time because if I needed to get up to get anything you can just carry on watching on the gamepad or connect your headphones to the gamepad when it's late
I confirm it works on my Japanese New LL.. And I'm yet to clear a 'Stage'!
@Joruus_Cbaoth I use it all the time to read fan fiction in bed.
Then again, I don't bother wasting money on luxuries like eReaders, tablets, or Internet access on my cell phone. It's not too hard or inconvenient to just borrow actual books for free from the library (or on rare occasions just buy the actual book), and if I want to use the Internet or play games on the go, that's what my 3DS is for, especially since I carry it with me everywhere for the potential StreetPass hits, anyway. True, I do need to find a wi-fi spot to use the Internet on my 3DS, but there's hardly ever anything that can't wait until I get to a friend's house, McDonald's, Barnes and Noble, church, the library, etc.
@Kit Glad I'm not the only one that wondered why the 'opening rhythm of SMB' is the same as a club door knock from the 80's.
