So, with part one of our exciting rundown of the best Wii U retail titles available right now under our belts, there's only one thing left for us to do — run part two.
Our video expert Rory Cocker is once again in the director's chair, so if you have any issues whatsoever with the running order, please send your hate mail and death threats directly to him. Cheers!

Best Wii U game IMO is Mario World 3D.
I did not authorise the sending of death threats.
Nah! the best game is definitely the D4L version of Assassins Creed 4 ya'll
Once again I got them all. ^_^
Pretty good lists. I would have popped Lego City Undercover into the top 10, but I was pleased to see Wonderful 101 take such a high spot as it's such an under-rated game.
I still have to try an Assassin's Creed game one day. I watched a friend play some of AC2, but the whole "ancestral memory machine" thing really drew me out of the otherwise really detailed world they crafted. I may give AC4 a go when I'm done with DKC:TF.
@CasuallyDressed I'm afraid it's all part of the job
PS3 didn't have 20 great games at this point in its life cycle so the console is doing great!
A fine list. Lego City should DEFINITELY have been on the Top 10 at the very least, but them's the breaks.
Also, kudos on ranking DKTF ahead of Rayman Legends. As fun and charming as Legends is, it's really got nothing on insanely difficult, wonderfully designed, gorgeously scored monkey action.
Yeah, I'd definitely put LEGO City higher. Such a clever, fun game. I also miss LEGO Marvel there, but I guess that's just the fanboy in me talking? And I'd also like to mention that our family really gets a kick out of Wii Party parties.
IMO MH3U should've been higher in the list i really really liked that game
Top 20 list? Isn't that all the WiiU has to offer?
@Frapp
So right now I have about half of that list, or 11. And I agree with you on Tekken. It was a great port, and the Nintendo related costumes was a nice touch.
@Cuddles Are you implying tht all WiiU games are great? Not all of them are, just many.
Yeah that voice changer / announcer thing? Don't do it. I'm not sure if it's a parody or serious, but in any case it's not working. Other than that, well edited.
Oh and a top 20 retail does feel like it's scraping the bottom of the barrel. Maybe include eshop next time?
I love platformers, it's probably my favourite genre... but even I feel Nintendo's maybe overdoing that genre a bit on Wii U. Time for some other genres?
Drop Mass effect and Orgins add tekken and add Darksiders 2. I got all of that list besides sonic racing and Mass effect 3. When it comes to game hours played MH3U destroys the rest.
Where in the world is Dark Siders 2 on that list! Easily top 15 then alone top 20! Still anybody that says the U doesn't have games needs to look at this list. 10 of those are exclusive to the system as well!
@Spoony_Tech Thanks I couldn't remember of the other game I was thinking of which was darksiders 2. Got it on the PS3 but it's great game.
I've played 9:
Batman: Arkham City
Lego City: Undercover
New Super Mario Bros U
Zombi U
Nintendo Land
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World
My favorites have been:
Pikmin 3
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Lego City: Undercover
Was I the only one who REALLY liked Assassin's Creed 3?
Mass Effect 3 is a good game hindered by the fact the first two are not available and the new writers did not bother to stay consistent with the already established history and story. I've was really surprised by how good the multiplayer has been.
Super Mario 3D World is a great game, but I don't think that Wind Waker HD belongs on this list. While it is a vast improvement over the original, it is still one of the shortest and weakest Zeldas.
personality I think Assassin's creed 3 is far better then 4
All of em are great. I've played Batman Arkham City,Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Rayman Legends, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and SM3DW from that list.
I have them all asides from Mass Effect 3 (really not interested) and Splinter Cell Blacklist, the only differences being that I've got Assassin's Creed 4 on PS3 (pretty much just as I've got all the other Assassin's Creed games on PS3 as well) and Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS (not felt the need to double dip and get the Wii U version as well).
I find it quite funny when people say 'The Wii U has no games' and refuse to buy one, but then quite happily run out and buy a PS4/Xbox One which have......which has well what exactly? All I'm really seeing on PS4/Xbox One is a bunch of games I can get for consoles I already own (Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360) but have to pay an extra £10-£15 a time for, for slightly better(?) graphics. Meh.
People complained bitterly when there was a games drought for Wii U last year, but there's the exact same games drought going on with the supposed 'next gen' now (bar some ports of Xbox 360/PS3 games) and yet people are lapping them up?
Own two that aren't on the list. Assassins creed 3 & Tekken TT2. Own five that are. Nintendoland, P3, W101, LofZ WW, 3d World. Sold Darksiders 2 because it was too damn good and couldn't stop playing it. Just like Xenoblade Chronicles.
Great job, Rory! I'm glad Deus Ex made the top ten, that game carried me through Xmas once I'd finished with SM3DW.
Wow yeah i would've put Monster Hunter higher in the list and Tekken in there. A good list all the same as i have a few of 'em and plan to get more.
I have 10 and 8-1. Need to pick up 9 (AC IV).
Got all 20, and quite some others as well. Wii U had the best launch line-up this generation, there's just too many really dumb gamers out there who really like their double standards... I'm looking forward to quite a few more upcoming Wii U games, while barely a couple of ps4 / x1 titles made me look twice, so far...
I can say again I'm the proud owner of all the titles in this list. Including W101 for which I didn't care much (is still sealed on my shelf). I personally would've traded W101 for LEGO City Undercover placing it (LEGO) at 8th or 9th.
Tekken Tag 2 is awesome and its a shame it was overlooked when making this list.
Here's my favorites so far.
1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
2. Pikmin 3
3. Wind Waker HD
4. Super Mario 3D World
5. Batman: Arkham City AE
6. Nintendoland
7. Trine 2
8. Arkham Origins
9. Rayman Legends
10. Mutant Mudds Deluxe
11. Ducktales Remastered
12. Wii Sports Club
13. Wii Fit U
@Cuddles lol. I was thinking the same thing.
Got 16 out of 20 in my collection, oly missing Mass Effect, (as there is no trilogie), Need For Speed (as ti's much cheaper on PS3 and X360), ACIV (waiting for the price to drop) and Splinter Cell Blacklist (Not my kind of game). Got 25 retail games now, ad also quite some downloads.
@Dark-Link73
Just out of curiosity, if The Wonderful 101 is still sealed on your shelf, how do you know that you don't care for it? Did you play the demo after you bought it?
@Damo for goodness sake, you can't do an 'epic American announcer voice' and say 'Noomber 9' it's 'Number 9' xD
I own 7 of these...... Really need to get my hands on NFS: MOST WANTED. Still kicking myself for not snatching it up when it was $16 on Amazon last Fall. Since launch I've picked up: NINTENDOLAND, NSMBU, MASS EFFECT 3, ZOMBIU, INJUSTICE, ARKHAM CITY, AC3, BLOPS2, WONDERFUL 101, DISNEY INFINITY, AND SM3D WORLD. Not a bad start, I'd say. What are the games I absolutely NEED to round out my collection, folks?
Remove the inferior ports and remakes and there is not much there. (And if you don't like the genre of one or two it gets even worse).
I have only played 3D World / NSMBU / Lego City from the list on the Wii U.
3D World was the gaming equivalent of a child who eats everything on Easter morning and then its all gone (And the sugar rush fades feeling awful). (Over two days theoretically playing mutliplayer but in reality the children I was playing with were as useful as Tails in Sonic 2).
I want Donkey Kong Country and Sonic Lost World but that is nowhere near enough for me yet. (I hope there will be within a year but at this rate it could be 5).
1. Warriors Orochi 3: Hyper
2. Splinter Cell: Blacklist
3. Rayman Legends
Also, I think that Darksiders 2 should have been somewhere on the list.
I still need to get monster hunter and Need for speed and Ninja gaiden for my collection.
Great games such a pity wii u does not have trophy and gamer tags like other consoles it gives you more to play for and show.
@sugarshack I have six of these on Wii U (+2 on PC), my predictions on the previous part were incredibly accurate, the order was a bit wrong though!
At least 5 of them are games I'm resisting purchasing until my finances stabilise.
@sugarshack You sold them beacuase you liked them so much? I don't understand... 0_o
@WhiteTrashGuy Asuming you enjoyed all of those games I would say Rayman And Deus Ex would be great purchases, especially since they are both pretty cheap! Just promise me you will play Rayman with friends/family
@ToxieDogg You're not going to turn this into a console debacle, are ya? Please don't. The PS4/Xbox One wasn't even mentioned until you said something about it with comparisons. Both systems have games and so does the Wii U.
While it may be imperfect, I think that ninja gaiden 3 is an excellent port. It drops frames on the rare occasion and is a bit buggy, but for the most part is visually stunning and fun to play.
@AJWolfTill I really want LEGENDS! Glad I didn't get DEUS EX for my 360. Thanks for the suggestions.
I, as every wii u owner should, almost every game on this list (only missing the batman games) But Darksiders 2 and CoD Ghosts probably pip Arkham Origins for me and Arkham City I had already completed on the xbox360.
SMW3D, PIkmin 3, and W101 are the only passable games for a console that's been out since 2011. That's a disgrace for nintendo.
I refuse to accept DKCTF as a new game because I watched the playthrough and I hope Hopefully it doesn't become similar to the "New" super mario series.
2014 looks like it at least will not be too bad of a year at least. MK8, SSB4, Yarn Yoshi, FExSMT, X, Bayonetta, and maybe a surprise could turn the wii u into a passable console.
@2Sang Could be argued 3D World is to 3D Land what Tropical Freeze is to Donkey Kong Returns. Pikmin is also a sequel which leaves W101 on its own.
Can we please just stop the ad nauseum posts about how there is nothing on the console? Just because you feel there isn't enough on the console that you like really doesn't mean there isn't numerous good games on the console. I say that understanding:
1. Most people own two consoles and the early 3rd Party games were old ports and you may own them already.
2. 3rd Parties have a bad habit of gimping Wii U versions, again not realizing (or maybe realizing) that people own two consoles and will buy a superior version.
3. Nintendo is doing everything they can to produce content. The only thing they need to improve is the Virtual Console service. Personally, I feel they should have been releasing games in order of release rather than the current chaotic system.
4. Nintendo is not Sony nor Microsoft. They will do things differently, for good or bad.
Own 13 games off that list
Interesting list, especially the top five; I expected DK or Zelda to be #2. I really need to get Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 one of these days; if only money weren't such an issue for me.
Although I felt #1 was predictable, I agree with its rank completely.
Umm....where is Sonic Lost World? Blacklist is an awful game imo....also how is Wonderful 101 ranked so high while NSMBU and Lego City ranked so low? Both games are far better than Wonderful 101.
@unrandomsam fair point, but I'm trying to give the wii u more credit than it deserves. Unfortunately W101 did terribly sales-wise, I heard it was a really good game too.
@2Sang Nintendo Land should never be on this list (unless NIntendolife cannot even think of a better game). Mario U was a rehash. W101 has a terrible control issue (given the modern handwriting technology I don't even know how they can screw it up) and it is geared only towards hardcore action gamers. Rayman Origins is better than Legends because Legends reuses some of the stages from the Origins so that they can extend the game (shame on you, Ubisoft)!
@unrandomsam You haven't got Sonic Lost World? Arguably the best Sonic since Genesis age.
@GuruOfGreatness Funny story behind this one: When it was first announced, I was actually excited about this game. It reminded me of the arcade games from the 80's which I grew up playing. However, when I DLed I was really disappointed of the game. To me, it was just too chaotic and without any coherence, and I grew up playing 80's games, so I've seen my share of chaotic games.
Best Buy had it for $25 on special so I bought it to support Platinum Games. I'll do the same with Bayonetta 2. I bought the first one and it's just too over the top for me.
@2Sang
People have diferent opinions and all but that's just foolish.
The top pretty much picks itself, but not necessarily in that order.
Although I do think Arkham City, Darksiders 2 , and Lego City deserve a lot of praise. In fact, seeing how lean the Wii U's line up is, there isn't really that many stinkers, is there?
Except AC3.
Isn't this basically "Wii U games: so far".
Besides the different order, I'd put Injustice, Darksiders II and ACIII instead of Sonic, RE: Revelations and either Origins or NFS. There's also room for Wii Fit U.
@Ren not even close. It will be more around 80.
@Dark-Link73 Since I don't own it, I couldn't tell you from experience, but a lot of people have told me that they've had quite a different experience with the W101 demo compared to the full game, and the verdict overall was that the full game was better, and a lot of similar opinions can be found in reviews throughout the internet, although some of them also mention that the game needs to grow on you or you need to get through the first bit to start appreciating the mechanics and so on, so might be you ought to give it a chance...
@Damo Nice job dodging the bullet... (or should I say "passing it on"?)
On topic and in general:
You could of course bet your you-know-what before even a single comment was posted that people were gonna disagree and rant over some of the games. Sorry to see that a lot of the natives are using their opinions as fact once again.
Let me all help you out here with some real facts:
1). Contrary to some of the supposedly funny or sarcastic remarks, the Wii U does have a fair amount of games, both retail and download. Yes there could have been more, but if you would have to play them all, you would still be busy today (and wouldn't even have been able to finish half of them)
2). Game A isn't better than game B, unless it is a truly awful game. If the game gets a decent review or above on a large number of sites or in other media, then it's just YOU not liking it. Therefore you might want to use words like "I think", "I feel" or "in my opinion" instead of "it IS". And that applies to any single game as well: a game isn't (necessarily) bad, that is your opinion, other people might like it just fine. If it truly is that bad, nobody would like it.
3). Same with the list: just because YOU don't like a lot of the games on it, that doesn't mean that it is a bad or incomplete list. The list tries to take into account different tastes and genres, but they can't make us all happy, so once again: it's just you. NLife or anyone else can't help it that you only like one type of game or that the other games on the list don't appeal to you for whatever reason. Deal with it: it's their list, NOT yours.
I think it's a reasonably good list, but I also understand some people's mentions of games that aren't on the list. There, all done...
Got all of your top twenty.
glad to see Deus Ex, Assassin's Creed so high, but Lego City should've been higher.
Also where's Lego Marvel and Darksiders.
These are pretty much the only Wii U games worth playing. Not top 20. Lol. But then again, most are third party ports and/or another game in a previous series.
@Rafie I felt it was fair to comment about it, considering that a lot of people always jump on these threads and attack the Wii U for having a lack of games, when those same people have very likely bought one (or both) of the other machines.
Other than that, I've nothing against Playstations or Xboxes....I'm a gamer, I play games not consoles.
@TheRealThanos When I read your comment through my email, the body of the email didn't show the breaks nor the message to the other person so I thought your entire party was directed to me alone. I was like "wth! What did I say that elicited such response!" It was until I came to write back that I noticed that you wrote the latter part in general and not directed to me (I hope), lol.
But anyway, I'll give the game a try again eventually. I'm focusing first on all the other games I haven't finished.
@Dark-Link73 Indeed I did, my friend, so no worries. That is exactly why I started the part not meant for you with "on topic and in general". I just wanted to give you a heads up on W101. All the rest is for, well nobody apparently, since I see that there's already another victim of the "I wrote down my opinion as fact" virus. One starts to wonder if they'll ever learn...
Replace Need For Speed with Splinter Cell Blacklist, and I'd say this is a pretty great list. Not necessarily in the order I would have chosen, but close enough.
For the record, DKC Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Zelda Windwaker HD and New Super Mario Bros U are all phenomenal games, and all 1st party of course. These 6 games are major must haves for any Wii U owner and/or Nintendo fan.
@ToxieDogg But no one said anything about them this time. Well anyway, I do like what you said about playing the games....not the consoles. That was clever.
@2Sang 2012
For me MONSTER HUNTER 3 ULTAMITE IS #1 Hands down so many hours of gameplay!
@Superstick There's also Sonic Lost World, Darksiders 2, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Black Ops II, The LEGO Movie Videogame, FIFA/Madden, NBA 2K13, Game & Wario, Wii Party U, Tekken Tag Tournament, The Amazing Spider-Man and a few others we had to leave out.
this list was alright but where is injustice gods among us or darksiders 2 in this list those games were great.
Hmmhmm, I am ashamed to say that I still haven't bought SM3DW. Was tight on money during the release and now I've bought a few other games and try to finish those first.
But what do I have from that list
ZombiU (husband's game)
RE:R (husband's game)
LoZ WW
DKC TF
Batman: Arkham City
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed
Rayman Legends
NFSU
NSMBWU
Nintendoland
It's hard to decide.. what I've been playing most? Legends and Sonic racing. As a driving game, it's a kickdonkey game and bit sad that haven't got my husband to play that with me unlike Mario Kart.
Legends just got everything right.
Wind Waker. I loved you on GC and I still love you.
Currently playing Tropical Freeze, been great so far (even I'm still annoyed by Kong's clumsyness)
What should have been there? Injustice yes. I like Tekken, but is it really that special?
@PAAppleyard Way to go out on a limb lol...
For me it's ZombiU. Completely justifies the whole idea behind Wii U. 3D World could have been realized on any console, as great a platformer that it is.
@WhiteTrashGuy I'd recommend pikmin3 , deus ex and rayman legends as my personal favourites on Wii u. Pikmin in particular has really got me hooked at the moment. Genuinely original, fun game!
I'm torn on what to get next out of arkham city or mass effect 3 and noticed you'd had both, save me flipping a coin and tell which you would recommend??
If W101 isn't in your top 5 it probably just means you haven't played it yet.
Seriously folks, if you like quality games with a challenge, content and an insane amount of production quality PICK THIS GAME UP. Its incredibly messed up such a great exclusive IP got looked over
@WhiteTrashGuy Pikmin 3.
The Wind Waker HD shouldn't be so high up on the list in my opinion. I mean, it's a great, great game, but in the end it's just a remake.
@Finntendo
I bought Tekken Tag Tournament. It's extremely technical and takes a lot of practice to master.
The fun part is unlocking all the crazy accesories and customizing the already over-the-top characters. Or you can play dress up for the female players who used to have Barbie, I guess? lol
I had my fun with it, and got my money's worth. There are a LOT of game modes, including a Nintendo specific one with trademark magic mushrooms that makes characters grow like in SMB.
also @greatplayer: Wonderful 101 did NOT have terrible control scheme or input. It is a difficult game to master that requires split second timing...and many reviewers were put off by a game that required learning and challenge. It's not the sort of game modern hipster game reviewers like...you can't casually breeze through it in a day and while TXTing and master it so you can write a lazy review about the great story.
What an awesome list! I'm very pleased with my Wii U so far and eagerly anticipate seeing how the library grows from here. Like many, I'm ecstatic to see the Wonderful 101 make the top 10. Can't wait for the Digital/VC lists!
Great list. The one thing that sets apart the Wii U from every other console I've ever had is that I genuinely want to buy the majority of games that come out for it. I've played most of these and can't wait to try the rest. Great little console!
Disappointed with Super Mario - maybe that's because I'm only playing it in Single player? It's certainly no Galaxy.
As I said the other day (and anticipating you not mentioning it) my favourite game on Wii U by far is Darksiders 2.
Top 10
10.Darksiders 2
9.Nintendo land
8.batman arkham origins
7.assassins creed IV
6.New super Mario Bros U
5.pikmin 3
4.super mario 3D World
3.donkey kong tropical freeze
2.lego city undercover
1.batman arhkam City
