When considering important sales months in the calendar year, we suspect that plenty within the game development and publishing industry have January near the bottom of the list. It does bring some new games, such as Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan, but it generally represents a notable downturn after the highs of November and December.
And so the final Media Create chart update of the month for January doesn't bring many big numbers for Nintendo's homeland. The software results have PS3 title Sengoku Basara 4 making its début in number one, with Kirby's latest outing being pushed off top spot. A number of the usual 3DS titles retain a presence, though a batch of new releases of titles on Sony hardware break up the portable's hold on the top spots; the top 20 is below, with lifetime sales (physical retail only) in parenthesis.
1. [PS3] Sengoku Basara 4 – 176,313 (New)
2. [3DS] Kirby: Triple Deluxe – 58,015 (353,291)
3. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons Z – 35,568 (1,300,778)
4. [PS3] Saints Row IV: Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition – 34,486 (New)
5. [PS3] Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z – 30,192 (New)
6. [PSV] Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z – 22,901 (New)
7. [3DS] Yokai Watch – 17,544 (345,529)
8. [3DS] Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind – 17,282 (221,249)
9. [3DS] Pokemon X and Y – 16,933 (3,910,658)
10. [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds – 15,095 (356,494)
11. [PS3] Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster – 10,412 (266,171)
12. [PSP] Kiniro no Colda 3: Another Sky feat. Jinnan – 10,295 (New)
13. [PSV] Uta Kumi 575 – 9,701 (New)
14. [3DS] Sentouchu Densetsu no Shinobi to Survival Battle – 9,271 (251,197)
15. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 – 8,285 (3,201,132)
16. [Wii U] Super Mario 3D World – 7,667 (470,687)
17. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V – 7,199 (689,415)
18. [PSV] Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster Twin Pack – 7,033 (214,245)
19. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 6,437 (3,656,250)
20. [360] Saints Row IV: Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition – 5,393 (New)
The hardware results don't bring much happy reading, with only the PS3 avoiding a drop in sales — that and the Vita possibly had assistance from some new releases. The 3DS XL / LL remains on top, a position boosted when combined with the standard model, but the Wii U continues to lose momentum following its improvements at the close of 2013; last week's sales are in parenthesis.
3DS LL – 26,484 (32,393)
PlayStation Vita – 21,498 (24,755)
PlayStation 3 – 13,360 (13,243)
3DS – 11,745 (15,045)
Wii U – 8,490 (11,443)
PSP – 3,428 (4,024)
PlayStation Vita TV – 1,792 (2,208)
Xbox 360 – 260 (273)
That's another week of sales in Japan, rounding off a relatively quiet January, with Kirby: Triple Deluxe being a bright-spot for the 3DS.

meh
DOOOOOOOOOOMM!!
Couldn't go a day without one of these articles I see....
The biggest news from this press release is actually this:
"Saints Row IV: Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition"
...Greatest video game title EVER!!!
Capcom, why not bring Sengoku Basara 4 to Wii-U too!? 8D!!! I would like to play as Data too!
No games, no sales. Every week, even in January, still sees multiple releases for 3DS / PS3 / Vita in Japan, and nothing for Wii U.
I was pleasantly surprised by the huge Wii U spike in December, even with very few releases compared to other platforms, but it's obvious that's an unsustainable position without new games.
Kirby on the top!!!
can't say I'm impressed. but that's because I've been a Kirby Fan since I became a gamer so I only expect high things from Kirby.
Absolutely hilareous that the Xbox 360 got less than 360 sales. They need to just die already.
Nice to see 3d world be a trooper. This is what you can expect.
Hahaha, Saints Row IV: 'Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition' - Seems a bit over the top
Meh, kinda bored of seeing an article about the Wii-U's failing almost every day. It just needs more great games, plain and simple. Once it has that, it'll start to sell well enough and so long it's missing that, it'll continue to do terrible.
"Can January be over now?"
I concur, having just shoveled snow for the 3rd time in a week. Winter in NY isn't supposed to be THIS cold.
Though Jan can't be over w/o a Nintendo Direct. Or can it?
Impressive sales numbers for Wii U.
Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition? hmmmm
Already down quite a bit on 2013's numbers. I have no idea if there are any big Japan-only Wii U releases planned, but it could be a very miserable 3 months. Even announcing a ton of games won't fix that as people will just wait for the games to come rather than buy now.
Glad to see SM3DW in there! And Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze will save Wii U.... Hopefully...
Saints Row? What the hell is wrong with you, Japan?
Nice to see Vita sales are up.
When there is no software to keep momentum, what do you expect?
Gloom and doom.
Reminds me of the mood after original Wii was released.
Anyone with a Wii U knows how great it is.
We are just waiting for everyone else to catch up!
I really hope the next Direct, whenever the heck it is, gives a good number of Wii U release dates because this is getting annoying.
I understand some people's gaming needs aren't being met, but I honestly have way to many games to catch up with on Wii U and more coming. I'll never be done before DK,MK,SSB release.
I will say though that Disney Infinity is a big part of why though. Wii U does have the best version as far as I know so I guess that is a plus for Wii U.
For anyone wondering, Deep Silver named the Japanese version of Saints Row 4 "Ultra Super Ultimate Deluxe Edition" kind of as a homage to wacky Japanese game titles such as Kirby. LOL There is actually no extra DLC content or anything.
R.I.P Wii U
@XCWarrior @Monkeh It's not a gloom article, it's a sales chart! This site always posts the Japanese sales, it's just a unremarkable week.
Seriously though, where is the January Direct, the number of announced first party titles for this year is really really low at the moment. Most of the ones we do know about were name dropped last year and given a tentative release date for this year. Besides DK all we know is Spring for Mario Kart.
At this point the Wii U's perception has become its reality, and that is why I do not see any real recovery for it.
Even when good games release on the system, they are doing next to nothing to garner any real turnaround.
When's the last time a 360 game cracked the top 20?
@aaronsullivan I'm once again out of Wii U games to play, and diving back into the Wii back catalogue, which is immense and still has loads of interesting titles to play.
@Mahe
I'm just elbow-jabbin' you here, but maybe you should play some of those GamePad-required Wii U games you are denying yourself and just give in to the awesomeness of the GamePad!
Well, Wii U has not released any big games since November with Super Mario 3D World, it's obvious is gonna drop positions. Man, no Wii U games since november... and there's still 3 weeks left to get DK Tropical Freeze. This is the exact problem Wii U has been facing since pretty much it's release, those huge gaps of 3 or almost 4 months between 1st party games and literally NOTHING worthy to play between those times, meaning, no 3rd Party games... Xbone and PS4 just got Tomb Raider Definite Edition this week for example, and Wii U? Well, just got 1 single NES Virtual Console game... And let's remember we don't even have Super Mario Bros 3 or ALTTP in America. I'm such a very loyal fan but seriously, Nintendo, this is getting ridiculous... 1 single NES game each week is not gonna help Wii U AT ALL!
Is the 2DS not getting a Japanese release then?
Well seeing as there have been no major releases since SM3DW I'm not surprised Wii U sales have fallen so much.
Not that big of a deal really, we're talking Japan where most people just have the time and interest in handheld devices.
@tanookisuit So why is the PS3 outselling it then?
Great numbers for Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Nice.
@SavantSupreme me too, especially since they'll have things like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.....
Even ps4 will have big games like Thief and Second Son in this two months... Well just release the damned ND nintendo
anyway I'm happy that Vita is doing good there, while I hope some well knownfranchise being released
Even wii u has games that anybody knows. I can just say mario and zelda and anybody would know what to expect
Biggest highlight of this chart:
That Saint Rows title.
L-O-L
When an AKB48 album that's priced below the standard for music cds, sold less than a million copies in its first week, that's when you know the economy's bad in Japan.
@AJWolfTill I enjoy saying DOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMM. I know Nintendo is fine. Just don't tell that to that any non-Nintendo website, which insists on usings stats like this to wrongfully predict DDOOOOOOMMMMMM every single day.
@PrincessSugoi I'm happy to see someone else appreciated that insane title!
