Not too long ago we brought you the happy news that LEGO The Hobbit has been confirmed for 2014, with the Wii U and 3DS included in its release lineup. It'll cover events from the first two films of the film trilogy, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, and like those movies will probably take enough creative licence with the original short novel to not actually resemble Tolkien's work in any meaningful way. But still, it has orcs and a dragon, so what are we complaining about.
As is standard for the series you'll be able to control various characters that have different abilities, with plenty of attractive settings to take in. Warner Bros. has now released a shiny new trailer to show the game off, with some typically humorous moments and some select lines from the movies themselves. It looks like typical LEGO fare which means, in all likelihood, that it could be an awful lot of fun.
Check it out below and let us know what you think.

Looks nice, may pick it up.
That looks soooooooo nice!
Afraid to watch it, I haven't seen Desolation of Smaug yet. Not like I havent read the book enough times, or seen the oringal movie - Smaug is my all time favorite dragon - but stlll.
Would really be looking forward to this in winter or spring 2015 w/ all 3 movies, but I just cant do it. Well maybe for $20. My wise for his age 11 yr. old thinks the first game w/ 2 movies should be $40 and the second game w/ the last movie $20 to equal $60 for the whole game. Lego games are almost always cheaper than regular games so we'll see. Then of course there will be the 3rd game w/ both - see Lego: Star Wars. If they announce the 3rd movie game will be DLC like Luigi levels then maybe.
Ok watched it anyway - 1:32 and Smaug is nowhere to be seen? And still no Lego Smaug building block set. Lego is killing me. Unless Smaug actually isn't in the 2nd movie despite it's name? Which would make sense based on where the first movie ended relative to the book, but not to the movie name.
"and like those movies will probably take enough creative licence with the original short novel to not actually resemble Tolkien's work in any meaningful way."
Pretty much.
Is it worth a mention that this game won't be released on either the Wii or DS:

or is that information a given at this point?
Sort of almost on topic - my youngest wants Skylanders for the PS3 rather than the Wii U b/c he doesnt like the Gamepad controller configuration. We have the first 2 games on the PS3 and he doesnt want to be confused by the addition of the jump button in the game. I think I need Andy's help. Anyway dropping the Wii version works for me, more reason for people to buy a Wii U rather than a bright red $99 Wii mini. At least my son never asks for the Wii version of anything.
@rjejr To be honest, I take it as a given now that games won't be released on Wii or DS. It's more a point to raise if they are getting versions of a game!
I'll be pre-ordering this as soon as it's available to.
I neither not getting this game or getting it until they announce what their plans are with the third film 'There & Back Again', if they plan to release the game with paid DLC, or full price with free DLC, then I'll buy it. If they release another game like Indiana Jones 2, then no way.
Really looking forward to this, shame we don't get the final film in the game, but long as there enough content and a open world, this will be awesome.
This is stupid, why couldn't they just wait till the third movie came out? When I pay for a Lego Game about a movie series, I expect all of the movies to be in it without having to pay for additional movies as paid freakin DLC.
Another week, another Lego game for every console.
@rjejr I will say no more than this: Smaug is indeed in Desolation. And he's quite... epic, for lack of a better word.
It absolutely baffles me why they would release this game without "There And Back Again". I love the LEGO games, but I'm going to wait and see how they handle this with the third movie before I make any decision on this.
@ThomasBW84 - I felt the DS games were long gone, but I thought the Wii was still a viable platform, what w/ 100 mil being sold, probably more if the Mini does well, compared to the 5 mil or so for the Wii U. No Lego Movie Game on the Wii either I see. No Just Dance 2015 Wii version then? That will be the real end.
I look forward to two things...
one being the eventual re-release of this title after Part 2 debuts, putting both games on one disc,
and two being the four hours we'll spend eating dinner, singing songs and washing dishes at Bilbo's house.
I read somewhere, that they want to make a games after all three films. And then there will be a "complete edition".
