Feature: A Week of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Screens - Issue Five

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Olimar on 3DS, all the Single Ladies, a stage tunnel (?!) and more

It's time once again to build our hype for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS ahead of its 2014 (hopefully) release. Masahiro Sakurai, as normal, used the Smash Bros. Director's Room on Miiverse to share five new images last week; all to tantalise us further.

It was a week without any new character or stage reveals, though this collection does include a 3DS screen once again. Peach is the most frequent star, with Olimar making a welcome return after a bit of an absence; Sakurai-san also shows us a corridor that's normally out of view in the Metroid: Other M Pyrosphere stage, presumably just because he can.

There are some nice images to gaze upon this week, so scan your eyeballs downward to check them out — click on the date headings to see the original Miiverse posts.

My God just look at the attention to detail! Look at Peaches Crown! It has an actual design on it! Or the stitching in Links tunic! Truly some awesome stuff.

the second one! just the corridor looks ugly, I cant believe there is so much detail on characters but the corridor without shaders looks like a gamecube graphics.

I vote for the Peach Stare, just for how awkward it is. Sakurai seems to be enjoying himself with this game if he took the time and cost to make a corridor in the Pyrosphere that players couldn't see.

Um ok, so first we have peach trying to find out what kind of underwear the trainer is wearing, then it looks like she's about to cheat on mario. I get the feeling peach is not quite the prim and proper princess she wants the world to believe.

@ShadowFox254 Depends on the map. Can you do that consistently on all maps? Some maps are known to be exploitable when fighting AI.

Also, by the looks of it bunny hopping is back?

I guess nobody else noticed this, but that screenshot of Olimar is the first instance of a Pikmin character on a handheld game, barring the Pikmin that carry data during a 3DS system transfer.

Since we seem to be going way off topic with bragging, being able to beat the hard AI's really isn't that much of an accomplishment. As they say "good against remotes is one thing, good against the living? Now that's something else entirely."

This really isn't a topic for bragging about what we have and have not done in ssb.

The week of Peach completely owned. Atomic Wedgie wins for me but Link is Dreamy was a very close second.

@ShadowFox254 all that one guy said was "your on" and you responded with bragging how you can beat 3 lvl 9 CPU's by your self so you started it

@chaos_

He wasn't bragging, he was just explaining something to someone that asked him a question.

@ShadowFox254

Pah! We'll see how long you hold out against the fierce, pounding fury of winter itself. ^–^

Wow, there's already an entire site dedicated to Atomic Wedgie, including art, ideas about whats up, and a surprising amount of logical, common sense.

Great! The picture gets taken down and so does my comment. (Not like I said anything really suggestive!)

Anyway, I guess the Peach and Link pick will be more of a subtle pic to ship! -_-

Hey there everyone, please keep our Community Rules in mind while posting here — we have always asked that explicit, vulgar and/or pornographic images not be posted here at Nintendo Life. Nothing has changed. This isn't the place to make lewd comments about what you'd personally do to a game character or to post and leer at skeezy pictures of game characters in compromising situations, so if that's the sort of thing you'd like to post and discuss, we ask that you take it elsewhere. Thanks in advance, and if you have any questions, our inboxes are open to you!

The graphics look pretty basic, to be honest. Brawl played in hidef on Dolphin doesn't look much worse. The upgrade doesn't feel that big, although I bet it will look great in motion! It's gotta be 60fps, right? Dolphin does require quite a beast of a machine to play Wii games at 720p. ;p
Maybe it just goes to show that despite lower res / lower poly, the Brawl art style holds up? :)

EDIT: Gah, I take my words back. The graphical fidelity is significantly better. I just checked this comparison gallery:
http://nintendoeverything.com/excellent-super-smash-bros-wii-ubrawl-comparisons/
Maybe it's just that the models are SO similar in design that it keeps it from feeling fresh? It just looks so familiar. :J

@Moshugan yeah that is what I mean, specially the corridor looks pretty basic without any shaders, characters are ok but the stages looks meh.

@Moshugan I checked your site and I enjoyed looking at the side by sides. I do have to admit something. I'm about to get flamed for this

Looking at the pics...I have to say that the graphics to the Wii U is a jump, but not a huge jump. Here me out! Really the only thing that changed here is the textures and outlines with a bit of smoothing here and there. Outside of that, it looks the same in my opinion.

This actually enlightened me more about how well the Wii actually was with first party games. I actually like the look of Mario on Brawl compared to the him on the Wii U. I guess more specifically...the jumper. You can see that the jeans look better on Brawl than they do on U (Wii U). Nintendo should have kept that look. WOW the Wii really was more capable than people gave it credit for. Heck, it was more capable than I gave it credit for. All it needed was some HD love and BAM! Looks just as great as it's rivals. I'm not ragging on the Wii U at all. Just like how the graphics from the rivals and their next consoles aren't a huge jump, neither is the Wii to Wii U. Still, that takes nothing away from how great these games look. I'm a proud Wii U owner. I can't wait for this game to sell out and top the charts for weeks and months to come. Probably holiday next year.

@Rafie The problem was not really the graphical aspect. The biggest problem with Brawl was the colour palette. It was completely washed out. In addition, certain characters were portrayed incorrectly ie Bowser. You ask the people out there, the majority of people will tell you that the Brawl version of Bowser is a poor portrayal of him (one of the things the new game fixes).

Sakurai actually commented on the colour palette; it was changed because he felt after making Brawl, Nintendo characters fit a brighter palette rather than a darker one.

I like the way the games are coming along. I just don't like the announcements of characters that we know are going to be in the game. They need to announce Lil Mac and Ike already!!

Then again a padded locked down Psyche Ward would make it impossible to smash your oppenents out of the ring. ;)
Seriously, the screens shots are nice and all but it's about time we get a new character reveal! or at least a returning character, just something different besides cute random screenshots like Yoshi taking a hot Egg dump on a mini-school of Pikmin. :p

I think I know what that weird, ugly corridor is!

It's where Samus fought Ridley while falling in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. If that's a stage, it's going to be epic!!!!! And that would explain the ugliness, because everthing will be rushing by, no time to actually see it.
