Weirdness: Two Kids Debate The Legend of Zelda

Posted by Tim Latshaw

Still better than half of all Internet arguments

Today the Internet brings to you one of the most heated debates of our age: is The Legend of Zelda one of the best franchises in the world, or what?

Representing anti-Zelda is HaleytheHedgehog, cooly wielding her observations like a surgeon’s scalpel. She has played Zelda with her 7-year-old cousin enough to know that the characters in the series are just karate elves with swords.

On the side of pro-Zelda fights SammyClassicSonicFan, who may not have the rhetorical skill one earns through wearing a Purdue sweatshirt, but makes up for his lack of refinement in seething, barely contained passion. And the word “frick.”

Memes and jokes about this kid are almost always on my tumblr dash nowadays. I see why now.

kendorage said:

This is hilarious. One of them is gonna grow up to be a very sarcastic grown-up.

RevolverLink said:

I'm not gonna lie, The Legend of the Karate Elves sounds like it would be a really awesome game.

Ibrahim77X said:

You GO SammyClassicSonicFan! I'm with you 100%. You tell the brat how Zelda is one of the best.

Dark-Luigi said:

Uh huh...ok then...
Well...there goes a few minutes of my life I'll never get back.

NightmareXIV said:

I watched it all the through, and the girl wins, but the boy had a good opinion, but he lost for getting angry.

(Oh, and whenever I hear elf I think Lord of the Rings not santa. )

idork99 said:

"Cause Shigeru Miyamoto could beat any of your ideas any day."

Lol! Smart kid.

NMH-TRI said:

I can't believe I watched the whole thing, but Mr. Latshaw is correct. The discussion about video games between those two is much more mature than 75% of forum debates, hahaha. Sad, but true...probably.

Williaint said:

It's an uninformed debate

"WHY DO THEY HAVE ELF EARS?" Because they are Hyrulian.
You know who else has "elf" ears? Spock. Case closed, her argument is null and void.

Daggo said:

Those videos raise many questions:
1) Why is he gotten so popular in the first place?
2) How he still got a YouTube account? He is 10 years old, tops.
3) Well, he is a bit exaggerated on his gaming stance, but why people is so aggresive to him on his YT videos? He is just a kid.
4) Looks like children are now directly influenced by those popular YT rant videos, what that does that means for the future of mankind?

Reggie on the OP made laugh:

retro_player_22 said:

If the real Legend of Zelda is a bad franchise, then those CD-I Zelda titles must all be good games right? Let's face it they don't follow the same formula as the main ones.

ShadJV said:

...what did I watch? Seriously, I want my time back, not only are those kids ignorant in their cases, they aren't even funny. Also, that boy needs puberty bad.

MrWalkieTalkie said:

Like I said, I see lots of jokes and memes on this kid daily on my tumblr dash.
Here's the newest I've seen:

TheRegginator said:

Oh geez. That's the kid that made that terrible fanboy defending the Wii U. He likes Sonic too much. I think he may be autistic (I don't mean that in an offensive way).

IxnayontheCK said:

Aw this kid is cute. Of course he's fanboyish but he's only young. I thought this hilarious and wasn't sure if he was takin fine flavored water with that voice or not at first lol

SetupDisk said:

Obviously he won't stop making vids since they are popular. No reason for the overkill in these comments. If you don't like it tough luck, there is a lot worse in the world that needs criticism.

swordx said:

''Sonic, Kirby, and Mario are better adventure games...''

Those are platformers...

This is kinda funny. The boy looks like he's about to rip her head off, and she's just continuing to troll him. I couldn't help but laugh at the stupidity of the video.

SammyOfMobius said:

That's me. Well, I really don't know why people freak out about my videos on the internet everywhere. I'm just saying my opinions, and people are saying "OMG this kid is so hilarious!" "Yo guys check out this funny kid..." "This kid is such a Nintendo and Sonic fanboy!" And so on and so on. It's very annoying. I hope this post doesn't affect what you guys think of me on Nintendo Life, because if so, this is just another place that I'll get picked on.

SammyOfMobius said:

1. I don't know, but I honestly preferred it when I was unpopular on YouTube because I didn't get made fun of nearly as much.
2. Well, I'm 14. Yes, I know I look younger, but everyone is different, okay? And I know I have a high voice. I can't help that. Plus I have a life-long curse known as autism which as affected me socially in school especially.
3. I ask that myself. The trolls on YouTube often upset me. Luckily I have friends in my life that cheer me up and my opinions are mine, and no one can change that, right?
4. I'm 14, and I'm just speaking my opinions!

Gen0neD said:

As soon as the boy started talking, I jumped ship. I couldn't do it to myself.

@The_Joker: You know what, you're right and I apologize. I just read his post and realized, before you wrote to me, that I was wrong. At the time, I thought I was being comically cynical, but alas, proved myself a shmuck.

Edit: Gonna leave the stupid comment up there, for the sake of universal internet comment history understanding.

Double Edit: "Into a fissure"?! Really..? Dammit...

Bobhobob said:

@ClassicSonicFan If it makes you feel better, it's not your opinions that are funny, it's the way they are portrayed in the video. And I would be grateful that people are saying you're funny! Not complaining. Most video makers would be excited to be in your position. No one on here is going to think of you any different or tease you, or I would at least hope so. NL is a pretty nice community in general.
TL:DR While people might try to make fun of you, think of all the people you've entertained by gaining this popularity with your videos. And no one is gonna make fun of your for voicing your opinions in something you believe in. At least not on here.

SeaCocumber said:

@ClassicSonicFan Hey, don't mind the trolls. You know how people are so anonymous over the internet, and how that makes them say anything, be it good or bad, without even thinking about it first. The world is indeed a harsh place, but that doesn't mean we have to take it all.

GamerZack87 said:

Seriously? Link? An elf?! The Hylians have pointed ears so they can hear the voices of the gods! Tell me that that isn't some decent storytelling right there! I'm siding with Sammy, since he has actually played several Zelda games.

LztheQuack said:

@ClassicSonicFan But you can't go wrong with fricking karate elves, no? I love that idea!

@GamerZack7: You know, I barely remember that about Hylians...because Nintendo really only used/mentioned it once in the entire series

drgfl said:

This video is kinda pointless... :/ That girl is still complaining about elves and such things.

edhe said:

When I was their age, me and my siblings used to record variety shows onto audio cassette.

I'm glad the Internet wasn't around back then.

gurtifus said:

Hey, I agree with @Bobhobob and @SeaCocumber
Now that Internet exposes children, people older than him should know who they are speaking about and the results that could affect the future of these children's life. Children can't think about these risks so, as there is too few way to protect them on the Internet, we, adults, could try to lower these abuses by thinking before posting !

Geonjaha said: this being posted on this site?
I realise its meant to be taken as some light humour, but why is this being posted on Nintendolife, especially considering the uploader is a user - and didn't ask for it. I really don't understand why this site tries to put up serious articles most of the time, then uploads stuff like this 'for the LOLs'. Doing either is fine, but know your audience and pick one. ._.

@StraTTtheRipper - Seconded.
@The_Joker - Coming from the guy telling him he should be 'thrown into a fissure'? Come on now.

Araknie said:

1:05, you don't scream like that.

Stop the video, quit the video, never wanna see a kid on the internet, in tv, in the world anymore.

Holy crap!

TimLatshaw said:

@ClassicSonicFan I ran with this because I found it fun and pretty much exactly the way video game arguments would go between me and my friends around this time in my life (anyone who says otherwise is probably in denial or lying). I didn't expect some to respond as negatively as they have, and if I had, I may have thought twice about posting this. But if this is what you love doing, keep at it and don't let anyone get you down, because you're certainly not hurting them.

SkywardSword said:

@ClassicSonicFan Don't worry Sammy I would never hate on you, there is nothing wrong with voicing your own opinion, you are doing a good job on youtube. And there is also nothing wrong with being a late bloomer, everyone ages at their own time.

IAmNotWill said:

Some of you guys here are acting like you were never kids before. It's a light-hearted debate featuring a user on the site. Can't you all be nice?

KAHN said:

maybe i should make youtube videos... not for the staff to post on here, just to express my fandom... i dont know, it might happen.

Daggo said:

I'm sorry if my previous comment came as somewhat disrespectful, I sincerely apologize.

It's good to see you participating on this site that I've encountered really friendly and full of nice people. Likewise I look forward to see your comments on the forums seeing how you're quite apassionate about gaming, I respect that a lot..

Now, the Internet is a harsh place, please be careful, never take things said on the net personally, the thing is... give some anonymity to people and everyone loses their minds. So sadly you're going to encounter reactions of all kinds, from good to the very bad. Does that means you have to stop voicing your opinion?
No, of course not. But be more reasonable. What you say and believes is as valid as anyone's else, but I do think yelling, losing your temper and discrediting others points of view altogether it's not good for you nor your argument, and those things put you in a bad spotlight.

Normally this is something we all have to deal in our lives but on more private settings, and being kids that meant getting a free-pass but beacuse the Internet and how YT gave you this kind of celebrity status, now you have to grab the bull by its horns and be the grown up here, unlike those YT commenters on your videos.

Take notoriety but not from the wrong reasons. That you pose a stance and prove why it is a good position for you to hold it's more powerful than anything and something even the most popular "YouTubers" (and adults) have problem with.

Take this newfound popularity yours and use it well, construct a better way to convey what you want to say and eveything should be alright!

Too long; didn't read: "With great power, comes great responsibility"

idork99 said:

@TimLatshaw Thank you!
I, too, was actually scratching my head about all the negative comments. It seems that many people are not too sympathetic with kids putting videos on you tube. I actually found the video to be hilarious. Then again, I'm an uncle and have had the experience of being around young children and seeing their imaginations at work. Big kuddos to them for uploading videos! And yes, they do remind me of adults; we are only going to point out the negative of things we don't like

KAHN said:

you really should learn how to argue. not trying to be mean, but people will take you more seriously if you use more facts to support your claims, but people will take you less seriously if you insult your opponent and lose your temper. not trying to be mean, we all learned from somewhere.

coming back to my previous comment on this post, Haley really doesn't know what she's talking about, and she's just trolling, but you're not really giving strong enough evidence to back your side of the argument up and prove her wrong. several times in the video could i contradict her opinion with facts about the game, but you kind of just got angry and insulted her.

remember, when you get angry, the troll wins. people think irrationally when they're angry, and that might have been the case for you. drop the attitude a bit to where you can understand her issues, and like the rest of us, you'll be able to prove her wrong.

Vallu said:

The funniest thing about this is the description: "HaleytheHedgehog criticizes the Legend of Zelda franchise as SammyClassicSonicFan defends it. Who comes out on top? You decide..."
