Nintendo Reporting Technical Difficulties in Online Services

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Update: Issues now resolved

Nintendo has now updated its status messages in North America and Europe to state that its network services are once again operating normally, after a downtime of one hour and 25 minutes.

Original article:

Nintendo has posted a network status update for North America and Europe advising that there are currently issues with the online functionality across all of its systems.

In the case of Wii U, 3DS and DSi these technical difficulties are related directly to the eShop and DSi Shop platforms, whereas the Wii system is affected in both the Wii Shop and broader network services. In terms of both updates the error occurred at the same time — 16:20 UK time / 08:20 Pacific / 11:20 Eastern. At the time of writing the UK status page says that services are suspended, but in North America "some online service features may be unavailable".

We've been able to access the Wii U eShop just fine at the time of writing, but the issue may be related to purchasing content; there's no scheduled maintenance listed for this period.

We'll update this article once the status pages are updated, but have you noticed any issues in your regions?

Thanks to WiiLovePeace for the tip.

@Pikminsi I second that The download of Earthbound already took longer than usual. I guess it flushed in more money than any other title in the system

Dangit, I was thinking of picking up Shantae. It looks like I might have to wait a bit longer to get it now!

I thought it was my internet connection, the 3DS eShop wasn't loading when I was trying to buy 'Attack of the Friday Monsters' on a whim. Hopefully the difficulties don't last too much longer, or is this a sign I should wait for a review? Hmmm...

Edit: Yay! Finally managed to buy AotFM & it's downloading now. Hope it's good!

These claims of Earthbound wrecking the servers might not be too far off. I read somewhere that it's the 2nd most downloaded of the recent releases as of late yesterday.

MrWalkieTalkie said:

Yeah, seriously. Just the release of EarthBound alone was enough for the everyone to care about Nintendo again.

RedYoshi999 said:

Damn, I shouldn't have been so lazy and downloaded Earthbound earlier.
Edit: Didn't end up having any problems accessing the eShop or downloading it. Lucky me I guess!

TrueWiiMaster said:

I'm glad I downloaded Earthbound within a few minutes of its release... My brother bought it a few hours later, and apparently had a lot of difficulty getting it. He said the eshop kept crashing when he tried to download.

Einherjar said:

@MrWalkieTalkie I cared the whole time And to be honest, i downloaded it ASAP, but i havnt played it that much, Dynasty Warriors 8 will be the main game over the next few weeks

Matti said:

Noticed this too when I was trying to access the Wii U eShop today. Only got error codes.

Gioku said:

On 3DS I was unable to access the new releases. It apparently did a search and was unable to find anything with any price that were new releases...

bofis said:

Huh, that's weird, I downloaded Earthbound last night, no problem, and picked up GBA Shantae this morning on my 3ds quickly before my morning commute. Hope this just means they were overwhelmed in a good way.

@Sceptic All the detail I have is in the article. It seems to be the eShop, specifically. As I said, I can get in, but maybe the issue is with payments and downloading content. The status updates are still showing the same at the moment.

AyeHaley said:

I had problems yesterday when trying to get Earthbound. Couldn't access any service (Friendslist, Miiverse, eShop, NN settings etc). And I never had any problems before so.. Yeah.

Darel18 said:

This a premonition... There will be lag again in Smash's online service
(jumping around and crying)

element187 said:

HA, I wish it was because of Earthbound.

But if Earthbound sells gangbusters, like to the level of something like NSMBU did on the system, maybe Nintendo will take that as an Omen they need to release more JRPG's on the system.... Bring it, Nintendo!

@DBMONK Glad to hear you're enjoying it! I'm just watching the opening cutscene now, it definitely looks 'Studio Ghibli'-like so far

Anyone else still have freezing problems with the Wii U? I got Injustice Gods Among Us the other day & played for a hour today & it froze with the horn of death had to pull the plug so annoying after all the updates I thought this problem had gone. Makes me angry I've put well over £500.00 into the Wii U with buying the console & games & it's still really temperamental system with many problems.

ikki5 said:

Strange, I have not had my console freeze since January... Maybe February at the latest. Well, there was once about a month ago but I think that was self inflicted when my cat knocked the system over but other than that, nothing since the beginning of the year.

ozgood said: the Kyoto office the tech team is scratching their heads. Tech guy 1: "Do you hear that sound?" Tech guy 2: "Yes, it sounds like coins hitting the floor!" "Tech guy 3: "Help, the world is throwing all of it's money at us!" In walks Iwata and as he sees the huge pile of coins coming through the servers. His eyes bulge. He turns to the tech team and says, "Maybe we should have had robust online offerings earlier! I have to go schedule an investor's meeting."

seems everyone DL'd Earthbound at the same time. which means Nintendo directs really does work.

My eShop on Wii U never works...Actually the internet never really works: I can't get the system to update because of connection errors. So annoying. I need to call Nintendo but I keep forgetting. Internet on all other devices work including 3DS and Wii. I don't know what the deal is. :/ It's been like this for months. It only worked when the system first launched.

Vincent294 said:

@LindsayPez I have a lot of Xbox 360 errors, but my 3DS works fine. My PC acts weird sometimes too (especially iTunes, but based on how many issues there is, I'd bet it's Apple's problem), so I'd guess it's some internet issue.

Marioman64 said:

@LindsayPez change your router channel to 11, it works wonders
edit: let me re-iterate: it fixed our phone ringing causing the internet to disconnect
