SEGA Reveals Castle of Illusion HD But There's No Mention of Nintendo Versions

Posted by Andy Green

Wii U and 3DS appear to have been left out

Last week we reported on a teaser trailer from SEGA that showed off a game that looked remarkably like a new Castle of Illusion game.

As if there was ever any doubt, it's been confirmed but astonishingly a Wii U or 3DS version was not mentioned. Castle of Illusion HD will be released on Xbox Live Arcade, PSN and PC this Summer.

Instead of being a sequel, the new game is more of a re-imagining of the 1990 Mega Driive side-scrolling classic. Castle of Illusion stars Mickey Mouse, who is on a quest to save Minnie from the evil Mizrabel. It will largely be left unchanged but of course the visuals will be updated into full high-definition and new gameplay mechanics have also been promised.

As of right now, it won't be found in the Wii U or 3DS eShop, which is a massive disappointment for all Nintendo gamers who may have enjoyed the original. There's still hope the game will make it to one of the systems as SEGA hasn't yet said it definitely won't be coming to Nintendo consoles. Our fingers will be firmly crossed.

Check out the new trailer to the game below and let us know your thoughts on all this in the comments section underneath.

Oh, calm down! Of course it's coming to Nintendo platforms. Maybe they just aren't ready to announce it yet.

Dpullam said:

This will be very disappointing if this turns out to be true. I never got the chance to really enjoy this game years ago. I will be hopeful that they simply haven't announced the game for the Wii U and 3DS yet.

belmont said:

It makes no sense not to release this game in 3DS and Wii U (and Vita). I may just get it on PS3.

Handy_Man said:

@thebigN What? The game itself or it not being on Nintendo consoles?

Anyway, this isn't really worth getting mad for, honestly. The game literary just got announced today, so there's still a lot of time for us to learn more about it. Like EvisceratorX said, maybe they'll have a much bigger showing of it at E3 or something and confirm that it will, at least, be on the Wii U. Maybe 3DS and Vita as well.

Peach64 said:

I loved the game as a kid, but I'm not a big retro gamer, so I'll probably wait for an XBLA sale. I wonder if they will re-do Aladdin (Megadrive version!) as well, the best of all the Disney games in that era.

MrWalkieTalkie said:

It's just gotta make it to eShop! SEGA said they have plenty of games heading to Wii U! Also were getting the remake of DuckTales so this would be a no brainier to include as well on eShop!

cornishlee said:

I predict a riot!

HavI been misreading NintendoLife's coverage of this? I thought there was something a few days ago that had a Wii U logo on it.

Yosh said:

I feel like all those spaces in the teaser are for the wii u and 3DS, lets just be patient and wait for a real trailer, then get mad. Sega loves nintendo (its weird saying that) , they wouldnt exclude them for no reason

NintyMan said:

I would be sorely disappointed if this doesn't come to the Wii U. I see no reason why it couldn't. Nintendo and Sega are buddies now.

Ryno said:

Oh well, Capcom is bringing me the two games I care about more for the U.

bezerker99 said:

See, not even SEGA is aware of Wii U. Nintendo needs to do a better job marketing it's latest home console.

Prof_Elvin_Gadd said:

This is beyond ridiculous and just causing a stir for no good reason whatsoever. Hopefully they will announce the eShop version soon enough or SEGA will certainly be the bane of some Nintendo fan's existence. I don't want to hear "A Wii U port is too difficult either". That'd be the biggest crock of horse crap I've ever heard. I don't care for this game too much, I just think leaving out Nintendo on the reveal trailer is ignorant.

Melkaticox said:

It's not coming to the 3DS, how would the 3DS support these graphics?

Not coming to the Wii U, though...that's a very, VERY big surprised. Da fuq, SEGA? What about those "Secret plans" you had for the Wii U?

bofis said:

With DuckTales coming to WiiU, I would really hope they bring this other Disney side-scroller remake to the system!

FernandoMachado said:

Disney games usually perform much better on Nintendo consoles so it's a very stupid decision to leave Wii U out. Very stupid.

NintendoFlow said:

Good thing i have Xbox Live I'll just download it off the XBLA store If Nintendo Doesnt get a release. a 3DS release would be awsome though.

Kirk said:

Once again another third party game doesn't get announced for Wii U.

Kyloctopus said:

Well if they don't have this, and they don't have Colonial Marines, what does SEGA have for Wii U?

SanderEvers said:

@Whirlpool Another lame Sonic game ofcourse.

And it hasn't been announced YET, there is no telling that it WONT be. Maybe they're still trying to work things out.

XD375 said:

SEGA finally got 3D Sonic right for the first time, Nintendo consoles just didn't get Sonic Generations. Sonic Colors was a pretty good 2D game too.

SparkOfSpirit said:

If it doesn't come to the Wii-U I'll just skip it for DuckTales. Sega should really know better than this.

iMarkU said:

People if you watch the trailer there isn't any mentioning of the Xbox 360 either . What actually quite weird is...

Wildfire said:

It's disapointing if it doesn't come to Wii U but still I'd rather get the original one for the VC anyways!

Neram said:

This is frustrating because there's no reason for it. When are third-party publishers going to start treating the Wii U like a contender? Damn it.

ACK said:

Ugh. Who wants this? Just give us a re-release of the classic and if they want Sega can bastardize a new sequel. Given Sega's recent incompetence I have little hope this will turn out well... Besides, I prefer classic sprite work.

Between this and that ridiculous new Ducktales, it feels as if my childhood is under siege... What happened to preserving and appreciating the classics? Or must all bow to the endless idiocy of modern marketing departments?

Emaan said:

It's a shame this won't be released on the Wii U. I can always just get it on PSN if it's anything worth while.

Rafie said:

Well...there's always PSN and XBLA for me! Still I would have gotten this game for the Wii U.

CowardlyHero said:

Never mind about it not been on Wii U/3DS, I'm more disappointed that its not the in beautiful 2D graphical style as last years Power Of Illusion. Still looks good and makes me hope that there maybe a remake of QuackShot if this does well.

Also maybe Wii U and 3DS maybe getting a VC release of MD and GG versions

EdJericho said:

That trailer is from Playstation UK's YouTube channel so they won't show competition, if you go to Sega UK's YouTube channel however you'll see the same trailer with the Xbox 360 and Steam logos at the end with no spot available to place a Wii U logo. I'd get this for PSN either way so it's not a loss for me.

Dpishere said:

Man I hope it comes to Nintendo's platforms! I have never played the original but have heard nothing but great things about the game. I have always been a fan of Disney and would totally pick this one up!

Tasuki said:

You know I love how instantly people start to rage when it says that its announced for the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 this summer. No where did I read there that its not coming out on the Wii U or 3DS. It might be coming out later on those two systems you know cause they need to work out off tv play and maybe 3D features. Do you people ever think of that? No its just easier to start raging and throwing a tantrum instead of thinking isnt it?

hcfwesker said:

And, ummmm, how are we suppose to support 3rd party developers when they don't even give us a chance? this logic does not compute

MagicEmperor said:

While I'll be able to play this game anyway (I have a PS3 and a good PC), I'm still disappointed that no Nintendo devices have been announced. Well, at least we're getting DuckTales (a better game, IMO) for the Wii U.

... Still, I hope Sega considers Nintendo. Not a dealbreaker for me, but I'd like that.

MrWalkieTalkie said:

And here I thought I would be having a Disney Summer on my Wii U, what with DuckTales Remastered, Disney Infinity, and this being announced for a Summer Release.

gojiguy said:

why wouldn't they announce this? If its coming to Wii U why would they leave it out of the press release? Makes no sense.

SEGA dropped support? After cancelling Aliens: CM they decided not to support Wii U anymore or what? Really strange.

DrOzaki said:

This could have rode the platformer-revival train with Shovel Knight and Ducktales, but noooooo, Sega doesn't want to include the consoles where platformers sell best! >

KAHN said:

well, it sure does look like SEGA is loyal to Nintendo like they said they were.

Haxonberik said:

Its Sega taking vengeance on Nintendo for taking them out!!! Nah JK another "business decision", I'll most likely get it on PC to save money like most mltiplatform downloadable games.

CaPPa said:

I guess I'll just play Magical Quest on the SNES instead if I need a Mickey fix. It's a shame as I never played Castle of Illusion on the Genesis (although I had it on the Gamegear), but I really don't want to buy too many digital downloads on 360/PS3 as they won't carry over to the new Xbox and PS4.

MrWalkieTalkie said:

@Pikminboy Yeah I don't know why NintendoLife insisited on using the trailer from Playstation's YouTube Channel. Here's the trailer from Sega that announces it for all consoles except Nintendo's

UnseatingKDawg said:

Well, either this is along the lines of the Sonic 2011/2012 bull (Sonic Generations, Sonic CD, and Sonic 4 Episode 2 were coming out, but not on Wii, yet SEGA insisted they still have a strong connection with Nintendo), or SEGA might have something special in mind with the Wii U. Or maybe the 3DS version might take longer to finish (a la Sonic Generations) and they want the Nintendo versions released simultaneously.

Ralizah said:

Well, if anything will drag me back to my 360, it'll be this. And Ducktails.

sonicfan1373 said:

There maybe a couple reasons for this not being announced for Wii U.

1. Nintendo and Sega will announce it during E3 (as a third party showcase) or a Nintendo Direct for Wii U, and they will stick a U somewhere in the title of the game and say they have made platform specific enhancements. This is most plausible because Sega and Nintendo have been known to make such secretive agreements (like when Sonic Generations 3DS was announced close to the E3 and after its console counterparts). Sony and Sega will probably do the same with this title for the Vita. This I believe is the most plausible explanation.

2. The game that made the game is Sega Australia whom Sega recently shutdown. The game might have been in development prior to the release of the Wii U and the Wii U and Vita versions of the game might have been canceled after the studio was shutdown or (more plausibly) these versions of the game are now being handled by another one of Sega's internal or external devs and they are simply not ready yet.

3. Sega does not want to support the Wii U due to the game not fitting the platforms audience or because of low install base. This is the least plausible explanation because the lower user install base is purchasing software and software is also being purchased on the eShop. For example, despite the low user base Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U is selling on par with the Xbox 360, and PS3 versions of the game (both of which have a much larger audience). Secondly, it would be a bad business move on Sega's behalf to not bring a light-hearted nostalgic remake to a console that has nostalgic fan base and is known for family friendly entertainment.

Verdict: I believe that the game will come to the Wii U and it will be announced at a later date during a Nintendo oriented event, unless Sega shutdown Sega of Australia prior to the game being finished and they have no resources and (after the Gearbox and Aliens Colonials Marines incident) no will to get another dev to finish the project. I think it is encouraging that Sega's press has not come out and denied a Wii U port (like they did with Sonic 4 Episode II on the Wii).

SMW said:

Wii U or bust. I love SEGA, but I'm not buying another console just to play their games. (Unless SEGA made a console again! )

retro_player_22 said:

Hopefully it comes to Wii U, platformers are meant to be play on Nintendo consoles so having one left out is just not right.

LavaTwilight said:

I hope it's out on Wii U... for a game such as this there's no sense in not releasing it for Wii U too...

Windy said:

If they would make a 3d Classic of Castle of Illusion on 3DS it would be an instant hit especially for those who haven't had the pleasure. Don't change a thing other than than 3dizing it. People will play it over and over as I did as a 19 year old 100 years ago LOL One of the best platformers ever

Ambassador_Kong said:

The video only mentions PS3 at the end. So either this isn't coming to the Xbox, or this is just an advertisement for Sony.

blueeaglewombat said:

This is an odd decision by SEGA considering their recent announcement of a Sonic exclusivity deal with Nintendo. But, it's possible they just haven't announced it yet either.

Does anyone else find it ironic that they are releasing an HD update to a classic Mega Drive game on consoles that don't allow you to play THE classic Mega Drive game? The Wii U has Virtual Console and I'm sure Genesis/Mega Drive titles will show up there soon enough. But yet, Xbox and PS4 don't have an equivelant feature. It makes more sense to release the new HD remake onto systems that you would actually be able to play the original title on as well.

This was one of my favorite games, I still have the original and can't wait to play the "new" one!
