How Many Nintendo References Can You Spot In Alphagames?

Posted by Damien McFerran

Experience the alphabet in video game form

Remember when Animal Crossing met Lost in Jamais Vu? Well creator Evan Seitz is back with another slice of animated brilliance, this time fusing the alphabet with the world of video games.

There are a fair few Nintendo references in there - how many can you spot?

A mention to Street Fighter couldn´t be absent, the problem was it shares the "S" with Super Mario... we all know Mario is at the very top of it all xD. I love those EPIC tunes from the old times =D that is one.

Honestly IMO it should be:

Final Fantasy, F-Zero, Final Fight, Fire Emblem > Frogger
Pokemon > Portal (Portal is still amazing, but Pokemon has nostalgic factor)
VVVVV,Vigilante 8, Viewtiful Joe > Viva Pinata

Same as IAmNotWill.

btw, @people wondering B is totally Bioshock.
And Z is totally Zelda II, not "Zzzzz" as someone suggested.

The only one that I didn't know at all was J. So C-C-C-COMBOREAKER! for me! Of course I didn't get all on my first watch but I couldn't have counted them then as I was too amazed at the wonderful video, so many memories! I would also have said only Oregon as I didn't remember the whole title.

@marty389 Some good points but I have to comment even though it is your opinion :D Everybody, even the casual people, know Angry Birds so I think it has earned its place. BioShock is probably a bigger name than Banjo-Kazooie. Frogger is a classic, although maybe Final Fantasy could also have been there. Pokemon would have been good but there is Mario already so no need for Paper Mario. Worms has been around for ages compared to WarioWare and also as this isn't a Nintendo alphabet.

I'm surprised I correctly guessed Ys, I know nothing about it.

0:00 Startup is a standard arcade-machine boot test screen. (MAME)
0:00 Title screen is reminiscent of Pac-Man and other vertical-screen games although the title is technically too wide to fit on a vertical monitor
0:03 A - Angry Birds (Puzzle in the shape of an A)
0:05 B - Bioshock ("B" in a large sign shown through a porthole / Big Daddy's helmet view)
0:07 C - Chrono Trigger (Time travel sequence with half the circle missing so it's a C shape)
0:09 D - Donkey Kong (The first stage in the shape of a D, with arcade border)
0:13 E - Earthbound (Floaty enemy-thingie with a lowercase e on it — I never played much Earthbound…)
0:15 F - Frogger (Normal arcade screen with obstacles making an F shape)
0:18 G - Guitar Hero (Typical 5-bar interface that music games normally employ, with a stylized G on a guitar pick over it)
0:20 H - Halo (H inside of a spinning halo ring world)
0:21 I - Ice Climbers (Typical stage with a capital I shape in the middle)
0:24 J - No freaking clue. Seriously. What is this game?
0:27 K - Huh? Another one I don't recognize
0:30 L - I'm sure this is Lost something-or-other but I haven't paid attention to that game either
0:31 M - Mega Man, with the mirror mode boss battle and a white M on the lights in the background
0:33 N - Don't know this one. Why didn't they use Little Nemo? OK, I guess that starts with an L. They should have used it for L.
0:34 O - Oregon Trail. Game screen seen through a circular wagon wheel. "You have died of dysentery." Everyone's favorite Oregon Trail death.
0:35 P - Portal. Companion Cube with a P on one side (The normal heart symbol is briefly visible on the other sides as it spins) in front of a portal making a hall of mirrors. Also fades to the Aperture Science logo in ASCII characters that is seen during the first game's credits sequence at 0:37
0:38 Q - Q-Bert. Typical pyramid stage with Q-Bert changing tiles from purple to yellow in the shape of a Q.
0:39 R - Resident Evil?
0:41 S - Super Mario World. Overworld map rebuilt in the shape of a giant S.
0:43 T - Tetris (Original Gameboy version and music). Blocks set in the shape of a T. Technically the bottom row of the horizontal section shouldn't be there as it has no gaps in it.
0:45 U - No clue
0:48 V - Viva Piñata?
0:50 W - Worms. The standard nuclear warning logo turns into an image of somebody placing girders on a stage in the shape of a W.
0:51 X - Xevious. Normal top-down playing field with dirt paths on the ground crossing to form an X. I had to look on my 3DS to remember the name of this game…
0:53 Y - Never played it.
0:55 Z - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. A side-scrolling temple with the rooms and hallways in a rough Z-shape. The middle left section is the entrance to the final temple with the barriers gone, and the bottom-right room has Link fighting his alter-ego. (That's two mirror bosses from NES games now!)
0:58 Game over screen from Zelda II, complete with sounds, flashing colors and Ganon's sillouette laughing at the player.
1:02 Pac-Man style hi-score screen (once again appears to be a vertical monitor but with text present outside where the screen edge would be). Music is from Street Fighter II, Guile's Stage
1:02 Score 0 is "I AM ERROR" from Zelda II. (I detect a fan of that game)
1:04 Score 1-3 "FISSION MAILED"? Don't know.
1:05 Score 4-6 "JILL SANDWICH"? Don't know that one either.
1:06 Score 7-9 "A BAD ENOUGH DUDE"? Failing here… Can't place that.
1:07 Score 10-13 "COCKY LITTLE FREAK!" Quote from Star Fox 64 during Star Wolf fights. Falco's alter-ego says it I believe.
1:08 Score 14-17 "SHOW ME YOUR MOVES!" Captain Falcon's (F-Zero) taunt from Super Smash Bros. series.
1:09 Score 18-21 "FINISH HIM!!" Text shown on screen at the end of Mortal Kombat matches when you can execute a Fatality
1:10 Score 22-24 "A WINNER IS YOU" I should know this one but don't remember where it's from. It's become too much of a meme and I see it everywhere
1:11 Score 25 "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!" Stated verbally during Killer Instinct games when a player successfully breaks his opponent's combo.
1:12 Score 26 "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US". Part of the bad translation from the US version of Zero Wing. If you haven't heard this one before, you'd dead or probably shouldn't be using a PC right now.

J is Journey, a beautiful PSN game that everyone should play.
K is Katimari Damacy, an amazing PS series about rolling up the entire world with your giant sticky rolling ball. It's as weird as it aounds.
L is Limbo, a downloadable game for XBLA and PSN. Pretty good supposedly.
N is Nights: Journey of Dreams. A Sega title originally for Dreamcast I believe.
R is indeed Resident Evil.
U is Uncharted. If you don't know what THAT is there'a no helping you.
V is indeed Viva Pinata.
Y is Ys, an RPG I believe, though I have no real knowledge or experience with the game/series at all.

Dunno about Fission Mailed, but 'Jill Sandwhich' I think is from Resi Evil, and 'A Bad Enough Dude' is part of the quote 'Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?' from the retro game Bad Dudes.
