Happy 60th Birthday, Shigeru Miyamoto

Posted by Damien McFerran

Father of Mario and Zelda reaches another milestone

Exactly 60 years to the day in the Japanese town of Sonobe, one of video gaming's greatest visionaries was born: Shigeru Miyamoto.

Since joining Nintendo at the late '70s, Miyamoto has arguably revolutionised the medium of interactive entertainment more than any other individual, producing a string of hits which stretches over an incredible four decades. In all that time, Miyamoto has never lost his sense of playfulness, as his recent visit to Spain proves.

Happy Birthday, Shigeru Miyamoto.

He is the Steve Jobs of Nintendo. Let's just hope when he dies/retires, Nintendo still has creative minds to work with and doesn't stop innovating like Apple has. Watching Apple's stock being to fall the last few months is s sign of things to come, for them anyway.

Happy birthday, Mr. Miyamoto!

He doesn't look 60 at all. You wouldn't know it if you saw him bouncing around in Spain or actively advising and influencing games today. He made a big impact with me and all other gamers through his big hits like Donkey Kong and Mario. He saved Nintendo from a slump by creating Donkey Kong, and since then he's made classic after classic.

He might have gotten a little disagreeable recently with all the talk about the Koopalings not being Bowser's children, not understanding why there should be a new F-Zero, or discouraging the developers of Paper Mario: Sticker Star from creating original characters, but it can't be denied that he has made a lasting difference in video gaming and will be looked up to for years to come.

60 years ago, the legend of Shigeru Miyamoto had began, and he would create some of the greatest legends in gaming, such as Mr. Nintendo himself.

No single person has affected my leisure time as much. On top of that, I've been trying to shift my career over to game developing and Miyamoto has been an incredible inspiration and even teacher just from the few nuggets of design approach he's shared over the years.

I guess that birthdays aren't really celebrated that often in Japan. It's kind of a Western import to have a cake and a card or present and is often considered for children if it is considered at all.

We can celebrate even if he doesn't though!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Miyamoto-san! Here's to another 60 years. The way you seem to find fun in every moment, 120 doesn't look to be out of reach.

Thank you for almost single-handedly saving the gaming industry, turning Nintendo into the awesomeness it is today!

Seriously though, there are no thanks sufficient enough to express my gratitude towards your genius, and how awesome it made my childhood.

Happy birthday, Miyamoto!
