Rumour: Square Enix Triple-A Title Being Ported to Wii U

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Straight Right employee can't keep a secret

Straight Right is the Australian development studio that's becoming a little better known to Nintendo gamers, courtesy of it handling the Wii U port of Bioware's Mass Effect 3. The company is showing plenty of enthusiasm for Nintendo's new system, saying the following when addressing its desire to meet expectations in its high profile launch day release.

We've made a number of bets on the Wii U, so we're certainly hoping that the platform comes strongly out of the gate. We've got two other titles in development.

One of them is original, our own IP, and another is based on another big franchise that will come out in 2013. It's a big title and you will have heard of it.

It seems as if a clue has emerged on the big franchise title the developer is working on, with an eagle-eyed contributor to NeoGaf sharing the LinkedIn profile of a Straight Right Technical Project Manager, who wrote that he was working on "porting a triple-A Square Enix game to the yet-to-be-released Wii U platform". Naturally, that's prompted rumours about titles such as Sleeping Dogs and Tomb Raider, both of which would add to the mature games library on Wii U. The latter has attracted its own particular controversies, with loose comments from members of its development team and details of an attempted rape scene making a lot of headlines in the gaming industry.

Notably, the Straight Right employee in question has now amended his LinkedIn profile and removed the reference to Square Enix and a triple-A project. We do know, from the developer itself, that a well-known franchise is one of its Wii U projects for 2013, so if this is true which major Square Enix title would you like to see on Nintendo's new system?

Chooses Sleeping Dogs over Tomb Raider. I never really liked the Tomb Raider series. Apart from Lara's physique and shooting the butler.

I'd like to say Wow...way to bash a game before you played it. The original Tomb Raider games are classics and the direction the new one is taking looks awesome. I'd love to see the new one in the Wii U

@TheRavingTimes Um hey you know they've improved upon it drastically since launch? they released 2.0, which is apparently hell of a better then the original version, in fact the version is called FFXIV: A Realm Reborn.

When that guy says "big franchise", it means to me an IP with two or more titles, so I don't think that fits Sleeping Dogs.

Not losing sleep over this, I can wait until the rumour clears.

I would hope tomb raider, seems the only logical one to me since it can release with the other formats, doubt it would be thief 4 I'm pretty sure its been said its next gen bound now but whatever the game it'll be good to see more coming to Wii U.

Um..... Dragon Quest X? I mean, it has yet to be announced for the west and has only been "announced" as coming to Wii (unless I missed something), and when I think "Triple-A", I'm right away thinking FF or DQ, SE's BIGGEST hitters. FFXIV would be such a waste I don't care how much Nintendo is trying to tout their new online infrastructure... porting FFXIII would be much more worth it, but that's imo. Nothing else Triple-A can I think of out of SE's camp that's even worth porting. About DQX going to Wii U, it only makes sense as at this stage in the game, I can't think of why Nintendo would even bother releasing it for a going-to-go-away-falling-out-the-spotlight system instead of the Wii U... that would horribly kill DQX's sales. I could go on and on, but you see what I'm basing my point on here.

Please be FINAL FANTASY XIV!!
They remade the entire game and as someone who's played FFXI for over 3 years, I like what they are doing with this game. And its a perfect fit for Wii U. I like it more than DQ X.

Who said THIEF 4?
If this is the secret tripleAAA game that would be pretty awesome news.

It won't be Lightning Returns or the reboot of Final Fantasy XIV, because development of Final Fantasy never leaves Square Enix's offices in Japan. Hopefully it isn't Tomb Raider either, I've hated every game in the series and the new one doesn't look like it will change my mind. Kingdom Hearts doesn't appeal to me either.
Sleeping Dogs or Hitman: Absolution will be snapped up quickly though. Personally, I hope for Sleeping Dogs more.

@sinalefa Actually, Sleeping Dogs is a sequel to the True Crime games, the Streets of L.A. and the Streets of N.Y. They weren't bad games, but they wanted to shake up the imagery for Sleeping Dogs. I think they were thinking of it being called Streets of Hong Kong for a bit.
