E3 2012: Your First Look at Super Mario Bros. on Wii U
Posted by James Newton
Here it is!
Nintendo said we wouldn't see any Wii U games in tonight's Nintendo Direct Live, but Satoru Iwata snuck in a cheeky glimpse of Super Mario Bros. to show off the system's new Miiverse functionality.
It was only a short video and focuses more on the system's all-new social networking functions, but we'll never pass up an opportunity to show you the new Mario.
Expect to see a lot more of this game on Tuesday.

Yet another New Super Mario Bros. game. Yay. I hope it's digitally packed with the console.

Wow, they hired an artist. Nice to see some imagination in the background there, especially compared to the last time we saw this game.

Loving the social aspect out of the box.

It's interesting that the Mii comments pop-up seems to demonstrate that not only do the discussions seem to be localisable to a specific game and a specific level, but also to a very specific area in the level too - all those three comments discuss dying just before the flagpole, rather than any other nefarious traps placed earlier on.

Notice how those leaning towers of Pisa appear both in the game footage and the overworld footage. That seems like too much of a coincidence for this merely to be a mock stage.

i think the title should be: U Super Mario Bros (USMB)

I love the background too. So.. Otherworldly. Hope it doesn't distract me too much.

Alienfish said:
@Burning_Spear
You noticed that too. I think it is a mock stage, but that they just put more thought into the fact that entering a stage doesn't mean you left the world. What really gets me excited though, is the way the overworld map resembles Super Mario World.

@Pengaweeno
You know, that thing looks a lot more realistic in a still image than it did in motion in MIB 3.
#16
C-Olimar said:
Flying Squirrel? Nintendo taking cues from SegaSonic the Hedgehog there...
#17
Stuffgamer1 said:
@Alienfish: I wish it did, but it really looks to me to have more in common with the maps from NSMBW. Guess we'll see moving forward, though...

It said something about a Baby Yoshi in the friend's chat.
Officially a bit more intrigued.

I don't get why everyone is suddenly against NSMB, but I dig those games a lot. Especially if this one still has 4 players (or, maybe 5. Hey, Nintendo?). The new high detail backgrounds look great. Totally excited for this.

I'm intrigued at how those comments pop up at a specific area in the level. That might be really cool and funny now and then, but I'm sure that you can have the option of turning it off so it doesn't become bothersome.
Likewise, the world map comments that focus on one level in particular might be yet another opportunity to get hints, and they could be turned off and on too. I'm looking foward to learning more about this game at the conference.

@Pengaweeno No! I could never fight Mr. Blobfish!

Dev said:
@Tengoku: I just read that comment as well.
"A baby Yoshi that balloons up to carry you? Too cute!"
Sounds like Yoshi after he eats the blue fruit from Super Mario Galaxy 2. Now I'm even more intrigued.

shonenjump86 said:
The background looks pretty nice. Can't wait to see more.
#28
Dev said:
On top of the baby yoshi, there might apparently be a flying squirrel suit too.
"OK, being a flying squirrel is WAY more fun than it should be."
I can picture Mario in a flying squirrel suit, and after being a raccoon, a tanuki, and a rabbit, it would be an easy fit for him.

thefabfour64 said:
It screams New Super Mario World; looks promising.

@Pengaweeno This Blobfish is getting some popularity. If only it knew how popular it was, maybe it would give us a simile.

I know everyone is getting down on New Super Mario Bros but this already looks like Nintendo is doing new things with the game. The hand drawn backgrounds look nice and the people talking about flying squirrel suits and baby yoshis that balloon up, not to mention the world map has me very excited.

@PlatinumGamerX: No, and now that I come to think of it, those sloping rock formations remind me of the landscape of Chocolate Island from Super Mario World. I thought about a New Super Mario World before, so we'll see.

@mamp Thanks for the lol. I needed that.
I do like the background and the world map but do we HAVE to collect the three star coins in EVERY SINGLE Mario Bros game now? Let's try something different, shall we?

AltDotNerd said:
I hope the overworld map has as many branches as Super Mario World. As a matter of fact, this game should be called "New Super Mario World".

@MeowGravy

If it's New Super Mario World/Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island isn't canon SMW2), I don't care what else is announced at E3. That could be the only game announced and I'd be happy.
@aaronsullivan
Going by the design of a flying squirrel and similarity in possible usage to the Super Cape, I can totally see that!
Something else I noticed on the SMW-esque world map: There are the red and blue dots at destinations. Might be like World, where red-dotted levels have two exits!

What I'd love to see is New Super Mario World come with little power up figurines, fire flower, super mushroom, et cetera. All the symbols for the power ups in the game. Only they aren't just toys. On top of being awesome collector's items, you lay them on the communication reader on the Wii U GamePad and it sends that power up your way in the game!

Haywired said:
Not sure why everyone is like "Super Mario World! OMG!" as it doesn't look in any substantial way more like Super Mario World than the New Super Mario Bros. games already did (and probably had more in common with Super Mario World than they did with say, the original Super Mario Bros.) From that clip the enemies, foregrounds, flagpole, etc. are all Super Mario Bros/New Super Mario Bros. A slightly more zoomed-out overworld map seems to be it...

Well they'll have my money, atrocious review or not. I'm a mere pawn in Nintendo's massive plan when it comes to Mario games.

Ulala said:
Has anyone failed to mention that there were frog suits in SMB3?
Cuz if Nintendo were to put frog suits instead of penguin suits, it would be too good. The frog suit should have the ability to cling on to things, like walls. Or it could have a vicious tongue attack that hurts enemies. Or even a high jump off the ground and an even higher jump off enemies.

I was wondering if the game is a pack in title, that it could only be a few levels or something, with paid DLC of later levels to come. What better way to get mums and dads and grandmas and grandpas to the eShop than a main 2D Mario game. I'm also confident that this Wii U Mario will be fairly complete game if Nintendo go ahead and go this route of DLC. But it would definitely be the way to go. I mean NSMBWii isn't that old, and NSMB2 will be out soon, having this game as a retail game doesn't make much sense. So if it's a pack in, I expect it won't be quite a whole experience, enough to warrant a purchase of a Wii U system and show off it's features, but being a pack in and "free", it should definitely leave people wanting more. Either through free and/or paid DLC levels and characters. It's just my theory. I can't wait to find out one way or another.

He said the people with accounts on you Wii U would be there when you boot up the console. Does that mean there's one main account and "sub"-accounts, or is it just the last one who was on the console?

Somehow I wasn't that interested before but these few seconds shown in Nintendo Direct got me interested. It still looks a lot like other New Super Mario Bros. games but all those message bubbles seem to have some hints that make me wonder what else there is to offer.
Level editor would be an awesome surprise but it's not likely to have one. But if it would have Level editor, this game would be a must buy to everyone
(Well... Almost everyone...)
