Japanese Virtual Console List - February 2012

Posted by Marcel van Duyn

Neo Geo support continues

Japan is getting three more Wii Virtual Console games this month. The scale is clearly tipped in the favour of the Neo Geo once more, as it will see yet another two games. If only we'd see some more Neo Geo games in the West.

Japan's full list for this month is as follows:

Super Famicom

  • Kunio-Kun no Dodge Ball Dayo Zenin Shuugo! — Essentially the SNES version of Super Dodge Ball, this was, as you may expect, never released outside Japan.

Neo Geo

  • Samurai Spirits: Amakusa Korin — The fourth game in the series known in the West as Samurai Shodown, this was recently OFLC rated so it might make its way elsewhere soon as well.
  • Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special — Japan only got the regular version of Real Bout Garou Densetsu (AKA Real Bout Fatal Fury) last month, but they're now already getting the upgraded version featuring some more characters.

The next 3DS Virtual Console in Japan (Which will be released next week) is a bit of an odd one, as it's Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters for the Game Boy. It's odd because Japan never actually got it back in the day, making it one of the first import titles on the 3DS VC.

Well lets just hope it means Kid Icarus for us soon!
We dont have a lot left on the GB/GBC horizon, so it'd be a nice suprise.

Oh man I hope we get that Kid Icarus GameBoy game. Never played it and it looks RAD!

SNK cancels Art of Fighting Anthology for the Wii.

Then they choose to release a "prequel" to SNK Arcade Classics vol. 1 and not only do they make it PSP exclusive, they refuse to bring it out of Japan.

Then they cancel all support for NA VC.

@gojiguy i don't recall them releasing many of their retail games on the wii, excluding the samurai shodown pack and king of fighters collection.

yet again, japan is getting more V.C retro games whilst the west is left out, thanks to NoA and NoE. sigh.

I love Nintendo World Cup which features similar characters to the Dodge Ball games i hear. If it plays in the same arcade fashion too you could count me in on this one.
And who wouldn't want Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters asap. (Especially since it's also a good promotion before the release of Uprising.)

I'd buy both Real Bout FF games in a heartbeat. Of course our VC is dead and buried, but one can hope.

A lot of Samurai games have been going around lately. Anybody else notice that?

Just give me a 3DS bundle cart full of Neo Geo goodness and a snap-on mini joystick for my dpad and call it a day.

I don't care for any of the Wii vc games mentioned in this but I'll get Kid Icarus: Of myths and monsters sometime after its western release.

It's news like this that really p*sses me off, and is symbolic of the decades-old irritation (going back to the late 80s) I have over favoritism for Japan in game releases.

Super Dodge Ball is one of my favorite NES games, of any genre. This SNES version would be a day one buy for me. But, I know there is a zero percent chance of us seeing it. I imagine everyone else here knows it too. North America hasn't seen ONE VC game in months, so I know an import like this isn't in the cards. We haven't even seen Prince of Persia SNES that Europe received a couple weeks ago.

Yet, Japan will apparently be the first to receive import Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, when not a peep has been mentioned of its release elsewhere. As a matter of fact, 3DS VC games are already seeing a big drop off outside Japan, only months into 3DS VC's existence (NoA is incapable of releasing 3DS downloads and VC on the same day), so I know I may be waiting for Myths & Monsters long after I've stuck my reserved copy of KI: Uprising into my 3DS for the first time.

Of course, I give Nintendo tons of credit for the generosity of its Ambassador Program, and freebies like TLoZ: Four Swords Anniversary. Still, there is so much to be desired, and there is a miles-wide disparity between NoJ, and other Nintendo branches. As is evidenced here.

I'm not counting on it, but I hope those of us outside Japan see some changes for the better with this upcoming Nintendo Network.

Just had to get it off my chest. I've learned to take this stuff in stride (hmmm, Strider for Genesis... another long-rated release not yet seen), since I've gotten used to the VC drought. But, this news was kind of the reopening of an old wound, with a pinch of salt on top.

Perhaps three more VC games than we'll see on a console until Wii U is released.

Please release all Kid Icarus games world wide, Particularly you NOA, and Kid Icarus of myths and monsters. I want them all on my 3DS. I already pre-ordered mine at gamestop, so i will be getting free 3D Classic Kid Icarus!

FluttershyGuy said:

After 3D Classics: Kid Icarus, Kid Icarus: Of Myths & Monsters, and Kid Icarus: Uprising are released, we can say this: "All your Kid Icarus are belong to our 3DS!"

WarioFan63 said:

(NoA is incapable of releasing 3DS downloads and VC on the same day)

This is 100% not true, we've had plenty of weeks with both on the same day.

I had a lot of fun playing super dodge ball when I was a kid. I made my little brother cry once because I kept using power moves and obliterated his team. "you're cheating!" He wailed. I hope this comes state side. Also, I still need caveman games! Lets go!!!

FluttershyGuy - well said; all very true.
@21 Well actually it is, with maybe one or two exceptions, but that is also true for when there have been no 3DS releases - all cancelling out to less than 1 VC game a week less than a year after the eShop even launched.

WarioFan63 said:

@25 But that's just it. There HAVE been exceptions. That means it's not a hard rule and I don't like seeing it exaggerated like "oh its impossible for 3DSWare and VC to come out at the same time." All it is is just coincidence.

@16 looks like the gamegear V.C games will be made available on the 3ds V.C but not on the wii V.C.
