Talking Point: The GBA Games You Want on 3DS Virtual Console

Posted by James Newton

Go on, push our buttons

By now you've probably had chance to digest our Nintendo Ambassador program and free eShop games FAQ which explains the 20 free games current 3DS owners are entitled to, starting 1st September.

All 20 games will be Virtual Console downloads — 10 from NES, 10 from Game Boy Advance — but so far only half the games have been announced. You can find out which games in our 3DS eShop games FAQ, but GBA games confirmed so far are:

Yoshi's Island
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Metroid Fusion
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$

What we want to know is what you hope the remaining GBA games will be. Fancy jumping into an RPG classic like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga? Taking the fight to the enemy forces in Advance Wars? Let us know in the comments section below!

Mostly games I missed out on, like Mario and Luigi, and Advance Wars. Those first 5 are a great start though.

Zelda: Minish cap.
Zelda: Link to the past/Four swords.

Make it possible Nintendo.

"F-Zero", please! Hopefuly "Fire Emblem" makes into that list as well as "Advance Wars".

I think this is probably very likely:

  • Advance Wars
  • Fire Emblem
  • F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
  • Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
  • Wario Land 4

My god, there are so many GBA games I would like. Holy crap! Pretty much anything that's been mentioned above would just be great.

BulbasaurusRex said:

We appear to be limited to first party games, and I already have Pokemon LeafGreen, Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, and Super Mario World, so I want:

  • Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
  • Metroid: Zero Mission
  • F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
  • Advance Wars
  • Wario Land 4

EDIT: Thanks, Drake.

Fire Emblem, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga, and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap would pretty much make my year. All are first-party, highly rated titles that would give the list some great diversity. I could really go for Drill Dozer, too, if they opted for it, and I'd say it's just as likely to get picked. I haven't played any of those but I've wanted badly to since they came out. Fire Emblem is my favorite Nintendo series, but I've never been able to find the first GBA one, and I've played Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, and loved it, but haven't played any others, so that would be really amazing.

Were GBA games coming to the VC regardless of Ambassador status, I'd think they'd become to the 3DS what the N64 is to the Wii. Many more than 10 probably wouldn't happen anyway (PROBABLY, not hopefully), so this announcement is more than I could ask for.

AbuJaffer said:

I want Pokemon (A choice between Ruby, Diamond, or Emerald would do!), Super Mario World Advance (my favorite GBA game I NEVER FINISHED! RAGE!), Mario & Luigi RPG, Rhythm Heaven (GBA version of course), and for the last one I want Nintendo to surprise me.

And @bonesy91 Four Swords is already confirmed coming for free for everyone. Remember the E3 press conference? REMEMBER MAN! REMEMBER! Shakes bonesy a couple times REMEMBERRRRRRR.... fades into darkness

sgotsch said:

I'm guessing the rest will be showelware, but I'm hoping for minish cap (we are getting 4 swords anyway) and a little bit pokemon.

NintyMan said:

I would like:
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Wario Land 4
Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Super Mario Bros. 3 Advance
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror

Crunchy_in_milk said:

@Jamba001 I'm almost certain it'll only be first party games.

The only game I want that I don't have is Golden Sun 2, but I doubt that'll be available.

My predictions:
1. Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap or that one GBA remake of Link to the Past.
2. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga.
3. Fire Emblem
4. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (Since Nightmare in Dreamland was a remake of Kirby's Adventure for NES)
5. Um... Either F-Zero or Golden Sun.

I come from work and then see all these news! This is awesome!

They have already announced 5 very good games. Other games I want are:

  • Pokémon Fire Red
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
  • Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
  • Fire Emblem
  • Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
  • The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
  • Advance Wars
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
  • Bomberman Tournament

I also hope that they change they're mind and make GBA games available to everyone and add them every week like other VC games. (At least almost)

Stine said:

Minish Cap, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror, Super Mario Bros. 3, Zero Mission, Advance Wars, Wario Land 4, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun... I'd be beyond thrilled if we got any of those. I'm kind of scared that they'll just give us some shovelware, but honestly, I'm so pleased with the games they've already announced that I'll probably be grateful anyway.

MasterGraveheart said:

Taking into account that we're probably only getting Nintendo first-party stuff...

Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen (save Ruby and Sapphire for remakes!)
Wario Land 4
Advance Wars
Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Pacman Collection

Any of those please...

pikku said:

  • Advance Wars

As for NES games, I'd like

  • Castlevania
  • Gradius
  • Metal Gear
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Star Tropics

Super Mario tennis was fun, Golden Sun 1&2, pokemon Firered (although i still want a Pokemon Yellow special Pikachu edition 3ds remake).

But actually, I can see them releasing Kid Icarus as one of the NES titles to try to hype Kid Icarus Uprising.

Alpha2797 said:

The games I'd like are listed below...
NES: Any that don't suck.
GBA: Pokemon Emerald
Warioware Twisted
and others that don't suck

Bensei said:

Yeah, Starfy would be AWESOME, but it woul require translation and thererfore won't happen.

I'd be happy about any game I don't already have (which is hard, as I own nearly all Nintendo must-haves). Or Wario Land 4. Imo best GBA-Jump'n'Run

I don't think ALttP/FS would make it, since we already get FS or DSiWare in September

Birdman said:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga would be awesome.
Choice between FireRed & LeafGreen.
WarioWare Twisted (Using the 3DS's built-in gyroscope, of course).
Since we're already getting 4 Swords in September, Minish Cap would be nice to have.
Mario Tennis: Power Tour because I really don't have another game that I can think of that I'd want from the GBA's library.

gamepopper said:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - even though I've already own it and beaten it
Gunstar Future Heroes
Advance Wars
Warioware Twisted (using the 3DS Gyroscope) - I know it's a stretch but someone has to put it there XD

Yasume said:

I'm hoping for:

  • Advance Wars
  • F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
  • Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
  • Super Mario Advance

For the NES I would really want Punch-Out!! That's all.

darklinkinfinite said:

Well first, I do hope they're planning on getting some third party games on the list. Maybe that's why they only announced half the list; those are the games they're contributing now they gotta see what games they can pull from third parties. My list is made in the hopes that we're getting some third party games thrown in the mix.

Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
Tactics Ogre
Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town
Klonoa: Empire of Dreams
Rayman 3

Manic Mansion
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

My GBA got so little love (I was poor back then, 'kay!) so I don't own any of the currently announced GBA games. I also really want the NES Metal Gear games. Sure purists will complain that they ruined the original and that Kojima didn't have anything to do with Snake's Revenge, but its exactly because of that that they rarely see re-releases or even acknowledgement, despite not being bad games.

Terave said:

I hope:

  • Mario and Luigi: Superstar Sega
  • Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
  • Zelda : Minish Cap
  • Wario Land 4

Little Nemo: The Dream Master

Castlevania Double Pack
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Mario & Luigi : Superstar Saga
Metroid: Zero Mission
Zelda: Minish Cap

nmozdzier said:

Yay and no. I'm kinda mad because I just bought Metroid Fusion and I own a few other ones... I hope we do get Mario and Luigi, though, that's one that should be a no brainer. The annoying thing is that people are still gonna have to buy a new SD card for all of those games, and well, there simply isn't enough memory for some music, 8 3D videos and the other, already-on-there stuff.

K964 said:

Anything just include multiplayer. The fact that they're free means they don't have to make it download play.

Hokori said:

Mother 1 and 2
Mother 3
Rhythm Heaven
Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire (you get to choose)
Pokemon LG or FR (you get to choose)

SunnySnivy said:

My list. I would happily pay for these games too. These are my favorites, or some I missed out on.

Pokemon FR/LG/R/S/E
Zelda: The Minish Cap
Mario & Luigi
Mother 3 (LOL, yeah right)
Harvest Moon
Golden Sun

... for NES the only one I can think of that I don't already own, would be Kid Icarius. (Not to mention, that would be a great marketing technique for Uprising!)

JohnDoe123 said:

I'm hoping for Golden Sun, Either F-Zero, Advance Wars, Wario Land 4 and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Unfortunately, I think Nintendo wants to stick with shorter, more playable/likeable franchises, so we may not get RPGs or Turn-Based Strategy games. I hope I'm wrong though.

AUnkownFuture said:

What i want:
F-Zero Maximum Velocity
F-Zero GP Legend
Sega Arcade Gallery

And thats it. I didnt have much GBA games but those 3 will do.

EDIT: Im also hoping for Sonic Advance 1,2 and 3, Sonic Pinball Party and Sonic Battle.

accc said:

Nintendo needs to give us Drill Dozer! By the time it was released in 2006, the GBA was well past its prime and so nobody cared. Which is a shame, since it was really fantastic.

J-Forest-Esq said:

I want some games I haven't already got. So no surprises there:

  • Advance Wars (1)
  • Fire Emblem
  • F-Zero
  • Golden Sun: The Lost Age (unlikely that they'd put up the second and not the original but I've already got that one so...)
  • Super Mario Advance
    And just because I'm greedy:
  • Tactics Ogre

Bass_X0 said:

Anything just include multiplayer.

Its a hardware issue, not a software issue. The 3DS can't replicate a link cable.

dustin_g said:

sonic advance any of them, ninja five o, both kirbys, donkey kong country,

if you want something real cool give us a new super mario world in snes graphics like super mario world 1.5 before yoshi's island.

give us some nes imports

the ultimate free game would be mario kart arcade 1 and 2 combo!!!

MadScientistMan said:

Nintendo never said that the other 10 games were nes and gba games, they could be n64 and snes games!!!
Edit: I would like to see any good gba game, since I missed the GBA, my first console was in 2006 with a Ds Lite

There is way too many to list. Also, prob 90% of the games mentioned above comments tbh. I'd download all 5 listed in title post.

Geonjaha said:

They announced the best ones. The rest are probably below the standard of the first five. But I'd just want The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, one of the Harvest Moon's and a Kirby game on top of those

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Bomberman Tournament
Advanced Wars
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team
Harvest Moon
Super Star Saga
Super Mario Advanced 3
Final Fantasy VI
Wario Land 4

Course, what with Final Fantasy and Bomberman being 3rd party and all, I suppose I'd give Golden Sun a try and, if they are willing to translate, one o' em Starfy games.

cheetahman91 said:

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga

3rd party games if they come at all:
Sonic Advance 2

I'll just watch everyone make list and dream that Nintendo will announce plans down the road for the "rest of us" who will be getting a 3DS after the fact. The only good part is I've played all of those anyway.

I don't know why Yoshi's Island is on there, that game would be better as a 3D classic.

DavynD said:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Final Fantasy VI Advance
The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
Pokemon FireRed or Emerald
And lastly, either Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3

Metroid: Zero Mission

If possible:

Sonic (any)
Spider-man 2

DrWadsy said:

Ok, keeping this as short as I can (and ignoring those already announced):
FF6, both Golden Suns, both Zeldas, M&L: Superstar Saga, and Metroid: Zero Mission.

And, just cos it'll never happen, Mother 3

grumblebuzzz said:

I didn't really like Minish Cap that much. ._. I do, however, want Zero Mission and Superstar Saga.

WertyYertrew said:

Hm, here I'm thinking the five unrevealed GBA games are
TLoZ: Minish Cap
M&L: Superstar Saga
Advance Wars
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
Fire Emblem

Just my guesses.

As for what I want, refer to the above list and add Golden Sun and all of the other Super Mario Advance remakes. Also Kirby and the Amazing Mirror with wireless multiplayer (online would be nice, but knowing Nintendo...).

TheBaconator said:

I'm thinking they'll put up:
Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green or Pokemon Pinball R/S
Minish Cap
Wario Land 4
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
It would be neat though if they also put up some GBA games that required tilt controls such as Yoshi Topsy-Turvy and Warioware Twisted. Some imports wouldn't hurt either, such as Rhythm Tengoku.

Since they'll all undoubtedly be first party titles, I'm wanting Super Mario World Advance and Golden Sun. One I've wanted, they've already mentioned as being in the program, Mario vs. Donkey Kong! Sure wouldn't object to them making Castlevania: Circle of the Moon one of them, but Konami has no reason to play along with this (especially when their involvement with Nintendo is minimal right now).

DSiWare is getting the Zelda Four Swords for GBA, to be a working multiplayer. I hope this wont be the only GBA-installment to receive this treatment.

I'm so happy to see all my favorite games said here by so many people
The two Metroids, the three Castlevanias, Minish Cap, the two F-Zeros, Pokémon...

But since I already have a library of GBA-games, I wish for something that I haven't played before. The Fire Emblems and Final Fantasies seem good! I wouldn't buy games that I already own (so wouldn't my friends) so my only chance of playing wireless Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is to get it as a free download

Oh man ! Looking at that list really makes me want to have a time machine. I only got the GBA SP after Minish Cap got released on it. Glad because of the amazing look of the limited edition though. So there are so many possibly great games which I’ve never even heard about yet.
But here's five games that i don't have yet and woulrd really like to see included.

  • Golden Sun
  • EarthBound 1+2
  • Drill Dozer
  • Rhythm Heaven
  • Sabre Wulf

But i wouldn't complain about 99,9 % percent of the games you guys mentioned earlier. The GBA really has an amazing line up of games.

I also hope they continue with a GBA VC for everyone because there are some more games i'm very interested in.

  • Advance Wars
  • Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
  • Klonoa
  • bit.Generations titles (thanks for reminding me, SKTTR )
  • Game & Watch Gallery 4
  • Legend of Starfy games
  • Golden Sun
  • EarthBound 3
  • Sword of Mana
  • The Pinball of the Dead
  • Metal Slug Advance
  • Super Dodge Ball Advance
  • Gradius Galaxies
  • Iridion II
  • Super Bust-A-Move
  • Donkey Kong Country 2

I also wish I knew more about games like Ace Combat, Batman games, The Lord of the Rings and the special features of remakes such as Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX , Earthworm Jim 2, Final Fantasy V & VI, Blackthorne, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Breath Of Fire games and Rock 'N Roll Racing.

PS: A Talking Point about the NES games we want would be much appreciated too.

@LTD I figure the NES games are just going to be the ones available on Wii: I can't see 3DS getting NES games that Wii hasn't already got.

alLabouTandroiD said:

I guess so too, @James. But there are several reasons why i would really like such a feature.

  • (nearly) every user has a grounded opinion about it so i'd say many people will react and post their interesting suggestions
  • i want to have a relatively clean consience by telling someone that getting games likes Tennis & Volleyball doesn't feel like a reward to me
  • I might be a bit naive here but i see a fracture of a microscopical bit of hope that Nintendo may take some clue from our suggestions. And please don't dismiss me just because i included EarthBound 1+ 2 in my list. Yes, i know it is very unlikely they're ever going to release these games again. It's just a good chance to show them there are still people who do care about these games.
  • There might be some people here who never owned a Nintendo home console and now got the 3DS. It would be very interesting to see which games they want to play.
  • And maybe most importantly it's fun.

Sabrewing said:

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is the second best (next to Dragon Quest IX) game, if not the best game I've ever played, so I'll be showing up at Reggie's doorstep begging him.
They already have Yoshi's Island, so I'm out of ideas.

Dizzard said:

Really excited by this. The following is five GBA that I'd love to see as part of the remaining five. The list is somewhat selfish because I'm excluding games I've played/owned (so no Mario & Luigi, Minish Cap, Golden Sun or Advance Wars)

1. Pokemon Emerald (I've played Ruby & Sapphire but not Emerald)
2. Wario Land 4
3. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
4. Fire Emblem
5. Earthbound (Mother 2) (It was released on the snes in's a very long shot but they could potentially put it up and call it the GBA version. Wouldn't hold my breath though)

If Pokemon Emerald is one of the gba games I think I'd explode with happiness.

As for the nes games I don't have as much strong desires (since that wasn't really my era of games) However....

1. Kid Icarus (Always interested in trying it since he appeared in now when he's comeback is almost here)
2. Final Fantasy (Someone said Nintendo owns the rights to it, I'm all for it then)
3. Devil World (Seems like an interesting game)
4. StarTropics
5. Yoshi OR Mach Rider

I guess since this is like an apology for the price drop, I can afford to hope for things. I hope the remaining 10 games will have some variety. I hope they're not all platformers or puzzlers. Hope to see at least one epic rpg adventure.

One of the GBA Pokemon games (but I doubt this will happen due to lack of integration with other current titles and the inevitable and impending Ruby and Sapphire DS remakes)
Wario Land 4
Fire Emblem.

C'mon Nintendo, make us proud!

And while you're at it, get started on Majora 3D ;D

I was really surprised about this news, I think Nintendo had no choice but to announce it, because of the situation they are in. But that really makes it irrelevant for me to go out and spend money (again) on a GBA SP as I wanted to play GBA games such as both Metroid games, Minish Cap (hopefully that will be announced soon), and Yoshi's Island.

Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones would be enough. Although, Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga would let me have the whole Mario & Luigi RPG series. Other than that Nintendo has hit the nail on the head in terms of their revealed selections.

Mario & Luigi
Sonic Advance
Kirby Amazing Mirror or Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland
Golden Sun
Minish Cap

I definitely wanna see the hits, but more importantly than that, I wanna see the obscure games. As well as third party stuff. Stuff like

-Sigma Star Saga
-Screw Breaker (Drill Dozer)
-Scourge: Hive
-Rebelstar Tactical Command (mix X-com with Fire Emblem and you basically get this, super underrated, title)

Nintendo did an absolutely wretched job securing third party titles for the Virtual Console on the Wii. Sh*t. There are NO third party games for the N64 at all! (Cruise'N USA was a weird exception. It was co-produced by Midway and Nintendo. Midway got the rights to publish it in the Arcade, Nintendo got it at home. So, technically, it's still a Nintendo game). If they don't change that, it'll suck .

Most people, predictably, are mentioning only Nintendo titles. I, however, gotta let my voice heard on Ninja Five-O. Make it happen Ninty.

Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga for sure.
I'd also like to see more Super Mario Advance titles.
But most of all, Pokemon Emerald. We need a traditional Pokemon game on the 3DS, so why not now, even if it is exclusive? Then again, I'm not sure if Nintendo would do trading or battling using DS Wireless Communications.

Nintendo of America accidently told me two more titles in an email.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.

Here's the email for anyone who wants to see it.

Thanks for contacting us. First off, I want you to know that I documented your comments and reported them to the relevant departments here at Nintendo. We appreciate hearing what is important to our consumers.

When Nintendo announced the price drop we also announced an offer to the loyal consumer who purchased the system at the original price. Let me share the details with you:

  • All current Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to download 20 free games from the Nintendo eShop, half of which are available exclusively to you as an early adopter and will not otherwise be made available for purchase or download on Nintendo 3DS.
  • In order to get these games, you will need to use a broadband Internet connection and go into the eShop by 11:59pm Eastern time Aug 11, 2011. If you have already done this, you are set. Once this is complete, you are automatically registered for the "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program."
  • Then, on September 1, 2011, you’ll be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games at no charge, before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. All the game titles are not known as of yet, but here are the games I know are included so far:
    o Super Mario Bros.
    o Donkey Kong Jr.
    o Balloon Fight
    o Ice Climber
    o Legend of Zelda
  • Next, at a later date, you’ll be able to download 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. Unlike the NES games, these will be available exclusively to Ambassadors—we currently have no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future. Again, not all the games are known, but here is the list so far:
o Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
    o Mario Kart: Super Circuit
    o Metroid Fusion
    o WarioWare
    o Inc: Mega Microgame$
o Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

More details will be made available at a later date, so keep an eye on our website (

At this time, we have no plans for alternative offers similar to what you've described, but I hope you feel like we’re treating you fairly with this program and that you’ll continue to be a loyal Nintendo customer.

I hope that's true.
But then there's three more unknown titles!
Please, Nintendo, let it be
Superstar Saga,
A Link to the Past/Four Swords and
Advance Wars 2.

supersayinluigi said:

hopefully there will be super mario world that was a good game but I never beat it since I first played it on the wii but the the controls on the contorllers are so loose I also wanted a sonic advance those where some fun ones and I dont need to worry about yoshi island its already on the list.

SunnySnivy said:

A Link to the Past probably won't happen, since we are getting Four Swords for free on the DSi Shop, and that was a part of that game. I would much rather have Minish Cap since I never got my hands on it.

Besides, a port of a port? That would suck... oh wait... Yoshi's Island... cough

alLabouTandroiD said:

It could still be they're taking out Four Swords from A Link to the Past. But it would be better to have original SNES games on the 3DS' VC instead of 1:1 GBA ports of these games. Controller layout anyone ?

Super Mario Advance : Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Let's see:
