3DS Gets Tactical Launch Title Courtesy of X-Com Creator

Julian Gollop beavering away
You may not know the name, but Julian Gollop is one of the creators of the highly-regarded X-Com tactical series, a turns-based strategy game fondly remembered by many. Although the series itself isn't headed to Nintendo platforms any time soon, Gollop has announced he's bringing a turns-based tactical RPG to the 3DS in time for the console's launch.
Citing critically acclaimed titles such as Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem as some of the main reasons to develop such a game on a handheld, Gollop didn't go into much detail but did make an intriguing comparison to Nintendo's Pokémon series:
The core of Pokemon is a turn-based tactical battle enriched by a sophisticated higher level meta-game that allows players to experiment with many game elements and combinations of forces - and Pokemon is the second most successful game franchise in the world. If done right, would an X-Com game with a turn-based combat system be successful? Absolutely!
A 3D turns-based RPG from one of the masters of the genre? This could be something very special indeed. We'll bring you more as it reaches us.

He is an 8 bit programming legend. He did some amazing turn based games for the ZX Spectrum such as Chaos, Rebelstar and Lasersquad. Check worldofspectrum.org to try them out...
BTW, he did work on a new Rebelstar game for the gba (released in 2005) so maybe we'll eventually see another of his games on a Nintendo console

This dude went on to do Rebelstar Tactical Command for GBA right? I would LOVE to see more from him and his team, even if I loathe XCOM and most PC games from that era. They look like and they know it. What kind of fool would ever try to shoot for "realism" on a g-damn VGA monitor? XCOM is more spreadsheet simulator than game; so normally I would be pretty down on this scoop. But Rebelstar was actually quite good.
