Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (16th Sept)

Posted by Corbie Dillard

It's Wednesday again and time for the WiiWare Top 20!

It's time to take a look at the most popular WiiWare titles available on the Wii Shop Channel. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take a look for yourself by simply logging on to your Wii Shop Channel, heading into the WiiWare section and then viewing "Popular Games". It's that easy!

We compile this list using the USA region Wii Shop channel, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be quite a bit different. Please feel free to post your region's findings below as always.

Keep in mind that the list below is a measure of actual sales made recently, not of the total time the game has been available for sale.

Top 20 WiiWare games for the 16th of September:

1 [1] - Contra Rebirth
2 [2] - Reel Fishing Challenge
3 [3] - My Aquarium
4 [6] - Tetris Party
5 [5] - World of Goo
6 [7] - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
7 [8] - My Pokémon Ranch
8 [4] - Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 2
9 [9] - Texas Hold'em Tournament
10 [10] - Sexy Poker
11 [12] - Dr Mario Online Rx
12 [13] - Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1
13 [11] - Family Slot Car Racing
14 [14] - Family Mini Golf
15 [15] - Defend Your Castle
16 [19] - BUST-A-MOVE Plus!
17 [17] - Brain Challenge
18 [20] - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My life as a Darklord
19 [18] - Water Warfare
20 [16] - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

* [N] - Denotes a brand new entry on the Top 20
* [-] - Denotes a game that was not on the Top 20 last week

Well the top three games remain unchanged, with Contra Rebirth holding strong in the top spot. The fish are hanging right there with it, and it will be interesting to see if the aquatic titles can eventually dethrone Contra Rebirth at some point. We did see Tetris Party sneak back up into the top five, however. Of course this isn't overly surprising given its long streak in the top section of the Top 20 each week.

The big climber this week was BUST-A-MOVE Plus!, which popped up three spots to #16. The big droppers this week were NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits, which dropped four more spots to #20 and Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 2, which also fell four spots to #8. It looks like NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits is one its way off the Top 20, sadly.

We didn't see any new titles make an appearance this week, as most of the movement was within the same Top 20 we featured last week. Defend Your Castle is still hanging on tight at #15 and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My life as a Darklord is beginning to make its way back up the chart.

I'm feeling pretty sure the algorithm for calculating the "Popular Titles" just changed again cause for the past few days everything has been jumping all over the place in a rather chaotic way, however this time I can't really figure out how they've decided to do it. However it does seem like it's done over a shorter interval than before, possibly even shorter than a week... This is however only speculation... And in any case, it's not like I can do anything about it.

The Swedish top 20:
(2) 1 - Contra ReBirth
(1) 2 - Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal
(3) 3 - Family Slot Car Racing
(5) 4 - Driift Mania
(4) 5 - World Of Goo
(10) 6 - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
(15) 7 - Swords & Soldiers
(11) 8 - Texas Hold'em Poker
(12) 9 - Icarian: Kindred Spirits
(20) 10 - LostWinds*
(8) 11 - Mega Man 9
(17) 12 - Bubble Bobble Plus!
(7) 13 - Arkanoid Plus!
(14) 14 - Bit.Trip Core
(19) 15 - Onslaught
(6) 16 - Mr Driller W
(18) 17 - Gradius Rebirth
(16) 18 - Texas Hold'em Tournament
(R) 19 - Bonsai Barber
(R) 20 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King*

Left the chart:
(9) - - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord (8w)
(13) - - Bomberman Blast (49w)

Hmmm, nothing added or dropped from the list. Starting to slow down like the VC - - - except that it's not spammed with Mario/Zelda entries monopolizing the top ten.

It's awesome to see that Conra is all the way in #1. Just goes to show you that people still care about the classics ;)

This is what bugs me. Great games like NyxQuest and Bit Trip are outplaced by garbage like Sexy Poker and Reel Fishing Challenge. (I wish there was an eye roll emoticon)

18 (19) Tomy Car Driver
19 (18) Harapeko Aomushi no ABC
20 (-) Final Fantasy: My Life as a King

Farewell: Ghost Mansion

Very little change this week; mostly shuffling as new games Discipline and Room Escape manage to hang on to their top 5 slots; Final Fantasy IV: The After Years enjoys a resurgence (guess lots of people finished playing through the original again) and Ghost Mansion gets kicked out of last by a game that's been off the chart for months.

And again just for fun, the VC top 20:

1 (1) Super Mario Bros. (FC)
2 (2) Super Mario Bros. 3 (FC)
3 (3) Puyo Puyo 2 (MD)
4 (4) Super Mario World (SFC)
5 (5) Downtown Special Kunio-Kun no Jidaigeki dayo Zenin Shuugoo (FC)

15 (16) Super Mario 64 (N64)
16 (13) Mario Kart 64 (N64)
17 (N) Ganbare Goemon 3: Shishijyuurokubei no Karakuri Manji Katame (SFC)
18 (19) Super Smash Bros (N64)
19 (14) Seiken Densetsu 2 (SFC)
20 (18) Downtown Nekketsu Kooshinkyoku Soreyuku Daiundookai (FC)

Farewell: Custom Robo V2 (N64), Ice Climber (FC)

A bit of shuffling and two new entries proves that nothing is forever in this chart as one of Nintendo's evergreen VC Famicom titles drops off the list.

The Dutch WiiWare List of 17-9:
1) (2) - My Aquarium
2) (7) - Contra Rebirth
3) (1) - Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1
4) (3) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
5) (5) - Texas Hold'em Poker
6) (4) - Family Slot Car Racing
7) (6) - My Pokémon Ranch
8) (13) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord
9) (8) - TV Show King
10) (10) - Driift Mania
11) (15) - Tetris Party
12) (14) - Swords & Soldiers
13) (18) - Brain Challenge
14) (9) - Arkanoid Plus!
15) (12) - Onslaught
16) (11) - World of Goo
17) (20) - Defend your Castle
18) (16) - Water Warfare
19) (-) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
20) (19) - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirts.

A new number one. What is this? America? Damn those fish. Contra Rebirth is doing good though and the Poker games seems to be losing some spots. It's terrible to see NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits barely holding on with a 20th spot in the list.

Only one new game in the top 20. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (which was a WiiWare launch title).

With one new title, we say goodbye to:

  • Mr. Driller W (17 last week)

Biggest climbers are Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord with five spots from 13 to 8, Contra Rebirth with five spots from 7 to 2, Brain Challenge with five spots from 18 to 13 and Tetris Party with four spots from 15 to 11.

Biggest droppers are Arkanoid Plus! with five spots from 9 to 14 and World of Goo with five spots from 11 to 16.

I notice that people love to see Sean's VC List. So here is the Dutch VC List of 17-9:
1) - Super Mario Bros 3
2) - Super Mario Bros
3) - Metroid
4) - Super Mario World
5) - Super Mario 64
6) - Super Mario Bros 2
7) - Sonic The Hedgehog
8) - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
9) - Pac-Man
10) - Donkey Kong Country
11) - Super Smash Bros
12) - Kirby's Adventure
13) - Donkey Kong
14) - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
15) - Mario Kart 64
16) - Paper Mario
17) - The Legend of Zelda
18) - Yoshi's Story
19) - Donkey Kong Country 2
20) - Donkey Kong Country 3

My first VC list so I can't tell anything about climbers, droppers and new entries. That will be next week.

@Sneaker13: Interestingly diverse VC list there; the Japanese one is almost all Nintendo normally. I'll definitely be interested to see how that differs over time.

You must be joking :). Almost all NES, SNES and N64 games (except Sonic) from big Nintendo franchises. Sonic and Pac-Man are the only odd ones in the list, the rest is all Nintendo.

Seriously, get Contra Rebirth its own image, it isn't Contra 4 and that's a good thing IMO.

Of course My Aquarium will eventually be above Contra in the charts. It's selling FOREVER. Any game that has a sales slowdown will drop below My Aquarium eventually. Most likely it's the most successful WiiWare game and yet it will never be hailed as a classic.

Germany:
(2) 1 Contra Rebirth
(1) 2 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(3) 3 My Aquarium
(4) 4 Family Slot Car Racing
(5) 5 Texas Hold'em Poker
(9) 6 Onslaught
(8) 7 TV Show King
(6) 8 My Pokemon Ranch
(7) 9 Driift Mania
(11) 10 FFCC Darklord
(12) 11 Bomberman Blast
(10) 12 World of Goo
(17) 13 Brain Challenge
(15) 14 Fun Fun Minigolf
(13) 15 Arkanoid Plus
(14) 16 Tetris Party
(18) 17 Bonsai Barber
(19) 18 NyxQuest
(16) 19 Water Warfare
(-) 20 Texas Hold'em Tournament

Wasn't hit by the door on the way out: Mr. Driller W (20)

Contra makes Tales fight like a cow. I wonder whether Contra really is the hardcore game that it gets called all the time since it's really one of the simplest games on the Wii (run, shoot, jump) and vastly more accessible than previous Contra games plus allowing two player local coop which should make it a party hit.

Another resurgence for Onslaught. I wonder what causes all these boosts? Meanwhile Water Warfare is dropping...

Brain Challenge gets a boost too.

I'm a bit late... Oops. By the way guys, I think this might be the last time I can do the UK chart because I'm moving out in a couple of days and I don't think I'll be able to get my Wii online at uni. Could be proved wrong but I think them's the breaks. Anyone can feel free to continue it if they want!

1 (4) - Contra Rebirth
2 (1) - Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1
3 (2) - My Aquarium
4 (3) - Family Slot Car Racing
5 (6) - My Pokemon Ranch
7 (7) - Driift Mania
8 (5) - Texas Hold'em Poker
9 (9) - Pop-Up Pirate!
10 (13) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord
11 (12) - Onslaught
12 (14) - Bomberman Blast
13 (16) - LostWinds
14 (10) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
15 (15) - Swords & Soldiers
16 (11) - Mr Driller W
17 (18) - Bonsai Barber
18 (17) - Arkanoid Plus!
19 (19) - BIT.TRIP CORE
20 (-) - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Up: Contra's now up top, like everywhere but Japan and the Netherlands :p. LostWinds still enjoying a revival. Darklord's up a bit too.
Down: Monkey Island! Gasp. Both Texas Hold'ems are losing ground. Mr Driller takes a hit.
Hello: The After Years makes a reappearance. Hello The After Years!
Goodbye: Defend Your Castle, from 20. First time it's been ousted? I'm not sure...

20 (-) - EQUILIBRIO

As you can see, the last 5 spots have some a new presence in Top 20. Water Warfare has been out for a long time here. Ant Nation and EQUILIBRIO are indeed strange here. Anyway, people ask for them, right???

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (both King and Darklord) are out of scene...=( Will they ever come back????

BY THE WAY... I really love to see the Top 20 VC from another country. It's a great idea; everyone please post your VC list. Here is Mexican's:

1 - Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
2 - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
3 - Super Mario Bros (NES)
4 - Super Mario World (SNES)
5 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

18 - Super Metroid (SNES)
19 - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64)
20 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

Great, huh??? I remember have seen other titles like Diddy Kong Quest or Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers. A couple weeks ago the other two games of Super Star Wars passed by, too. Let's check it out next week.

Oh, I almost forgot!!! @Sneaker13, I have registered you as my friend in Mario Kart and Tetris Party. Would you like to play with me??? Then REGISTER ME, PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

If you are new to Wii Ware gaming make sure to do some research before you download. You may miss a quality title like NyxQuest.
