Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (27th Aug)

Posted by Corbie Dillard

It's Thursday again and time for the WiiWare Top 20!

It's time to take a look at the most popular WiiWare titles available on the Wii Shop Channel. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take a look for yourself by simply logging on to your Wii Shop Channel, heading into the WiiWare section and then viewing "Popular Games". It's that easy!

We compile this list using the USA region Wii Shop channel, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be quite a bit different. Please feel free to post your region's findings below as always.

Keep in mind that the list below is a measure of actual sales made recently, not of the total time the game has been available for sale.

Here is the list for the 27th of August:

1 [1] - Reel Fishing Challenge
2 [2] - My Aquarium
3 (5) - My Pokémon Ranch
4 (3) - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
5 (6) - World of Goo
6 (9) - Tetris Party
7 (8) - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
8 (4) - Sexy Poker
9 (10) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
10 (7) - Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1
11 (12) - Dr Mario Online Rx
12 (11) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My life as a Darklord
13 (14) - Family Mini Golf
14 (13) - Water Warfare
15 [-] - Family Slot Car Racing
16 (16) - Defend Your Castle
17 (18) - Brain Challenge
18 (19) - Cue Sports - Pool Revolution
19 (17) - BUST-A-MOVE Plus!
20 (15) - Overturn

* (N) - Denotes a brand new entry on the Top 20
* [-] - Denotes a game that was not on the Top 20 last week

Once again, the two WiiWare fish titles are holding strong in the top two spots with no signs of slowing down at this point. My Pokémon Ranch did manage to pop back up to the #3 spot continuing its up and down movement from week to week.

We did have one new title make its debut on the Top 20 with the emergence of Family Slot Car Racing on the chart this week.

The big climber this week was the aforementioned Family Slot Car Racing, which came from all the way off the chart completely, up to #15. The big dropper this week was Overturn, which dropped from #15 down to #20.

The debut of Family Slot Car Racing on the Top 20 forced Ant Nation off the chart, but there's always a chance we might see it back on the Top 20 in the coming weeks.

Dig the Japanese top 20:

1 (1) Pokemon Scramble
2 (2) Pokemon Fantasy Dungeon Ikuzo! The Adventures of Storm
3 (3) Pokemon Fantasy Dungeon Muzase! The Adventures of Light
4 (5) Final Fantasy IV - The After Years
5 (4) Pokemon Fantasy Dungeon Susumu! The Adventures of Flame
6 (9) Pole's Big Adventure
7 (7) Asobu Made in Ore
8 (8) Okiraku Tennis Wii
9 (6) Karaoke Joysound Wii
10 (10) Fish Eyes Challenge (Reel Fishing Challenge)
11 (11) Bomberman Blast
12 (13) My Pokemon Ranch Platinum
13 (14) FFCC My Life as a Darklord
14 (N) Discipline
15 (17) Rockman 9
16 (16) Game of Life
17(12) Tomenasanner Wii
18 (15) Tomy Car Driver
19 (18) Sea Farm
20 (20) Dr. Mario & Germ Buster

Farewell: Shikaku i Atama o Maru Kusuru

Little change at the top with FFIV swapping places with the lowest-ranked Pokemon dungeon crawler. Tomenasanner's climb appears to have been very short-lived, Japan's love affair with My Aquarium truly seems to be over, Pole's Big Adventure trumps karaoke and Discipline apparently got a lot of attention because after 24 hours in the shop it's already at number 14 knocking IEEE Institute's quiz game out only a week being in the chart!

And again just for fun, the VC top 20:

1 (1) Super Mario Bros. (FC)
2 (2) Super Mario Bros. 3 (FC)
3 (4) Puyo Puyo 2 (MD)
4 (5) Super Mario World (SFC)
5 (6) Downtown Special Kunio-Kun no Jidaigeki dayo Zenin Shuugoo (FC)
6 (3) Final Fantasy IV (SFC)
7 (7) Final Fantasy III (FC)
8 (8) Super Mario Kart (SFC)
9 (9) Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask (N64)
10 (10) Super Mario Bros. 2 (FC)
11 (12) Super Mario RPG (SFC)
12 (11) Mario Kart 64 (N64)
13 (13) Downtown Nekketsu Kooshinkyoku Soreyuku Daiundookai (FC)
14 (17) Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
15 (14) Super Mario 64 (N64)
16 (15) Super Smash Bros (N64)
17 (16) Ice Climber (FC)
18 (20) Seiken Densetsu 2 (SFC)
19 (N) Ike lke! Nekketsu Hockey-bu
20 (18) Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SFC)

Farewell: Twinbee (FC)

Just some shuffling this week with Secret of Mana creeping up the chart (guess some folk decided to dip back into this after playing some old FF games?) and Kunio Kun's appeal seems to trump Twinbee's -- will we see it again or has it suffered the same fate as Kirby on the Famicom?

The Dutch List of 27-8 (from this morning):

2 (2) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
3 (3) - My Aquarium
4 (12) - Family Slot Car Racing
5 (8) - My Pokémon Ranch
6 (5) - TV Show King
7 (4) - Bonsai Barber
8 (9) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord
9 (7) - 5 Spots Party
10 (10) - Swords & Soldiers
11 (17) - World of Goo
12 (13) - Onslaught
13 (11) - Tetris Party
14 (6) - Driift Mania
15 (15) - Brain Challenge
16 (14) - Water Warfare
17 (18) - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
18 (16) - Bomberman Blast
19 (-) - Arkanoid Plus! NEW
20 (-) - Defend your Castle

We welcome Arkanoid Plus! which came out last week and we see the return of Defend your Castle (which came out 1 Aug. 2008).

With two new releases, we say goodbye to:

  • Snowboard Riot (19 last week)
  • Final Fantasy IV: The After Years (20 last week)

And OMG!!! Family Slot Car Racing went from 12 to 4 and is the biggest climber with 8 spots. Are you kidding me. World of Goo climbed 6 spots from 17 to 11 which is great too. The biggest dropper was Driift Mania who fell 7 spots from 6 to 13.

Sexy Poker has went down, but My Pokemon Ranch is NUMBER 3!
It's time to take shelter!

Charlie_The_Unicorn said:

I noticed a mistake. Sexy Poker was not the big dropper. It was......gasp....

It fell 5 spots from 15 to 20.

Wasn't the WiiWare update supposed to be on Wednesdays anyway?

(1) 1 Tales of Monkey Island 1
(8) 2 Family Slot Car Racing
(2) 3 My Aquarium
(4) 4 Driift Mania
(5) 5 My Pokemon Ranch
(6) 6 Texas Hold'em Tournament
(9) 7 TV Show King
(7) 8 FFCC Darklord
(3) 9 Bonsai Barber
(12) 10 World of Goo
(10) 11 Onslaught
(-) 12 Arkanoid Plus
(11) 13 Fun Fun Minigolf
(14) 14 Bomberman Blast
(15) 15 Tetris Party
(13) 16 NyxQuest
(17) 17 Water Warfare
(16) 18 Brain Challenge
(-) 19 3-2-1 Rattle Battle
(18) 20 Swords & Soldiers

WILL NOT BE MOURNED: Puzzle Bobble Plus (19), Three Musketeers (20)

Monkey Island holds on, didn't know there were that many people who still know that name... I wonder what'll happen when episode 2 is on WiiWare. Family Slot Car Racing outperforms Driift. I had no idea people enjoy slot cars and would have expected Driift to do better than it... Bonsai Barber dipped quite a bit.

So what's that CET? Like 1AM? I think... Right?

Swedish top 20 (from Wednesday for the record):
(1) 1 - Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal
(13) 2 - Family Slot Car Racing
(2) 3 - Driift Mania
(3) 4 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord
(4) 5 - World Of Goo
(7) 6 - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
(12) 7 - Icarian: Kindred Spirits
(-) 8 - Bit.Trip Core
(-) 9 - Arkanoid Plus!
(8) 10 - Tetris Party
(9) 11 - Mega Man 9
(11) 12 - Onslaught
(6) 13 - My Aquarium*
(15) 14 - Gradius Rebirth
(5) 15 - Bonsai Barber
(10) 16 - Bubble Bobble Plus!
(19) 17 - Texas Hold'em Tournament
(R) 18 - Swords & Soldiers
(14) 19 - Fun! Fun! Minigolf
(16) 20 - My Pokémon Ranch*

Completely forgot to mention last week that My Aquarium (...) became the 3rd game to remain charted for a full year without interruptions. Good for it... Moving on to this week week 3-2-1 Rattle Battle! became the 6th game to fail to chart (yawn). And to our friends over at Gaijin Games, I wouldn't worry about BTC not being able to perform as well as BTB in the first week. There's a new algorithm for calculating the "Popular Titles" (my going theory is that the last 14 days are counted although I'm not positive), it'll climb plenty in it's second week, just look at Family Slot Car Racing. However, concerning it being able to repeat BTB's first place performance... Well, that's more questionable. Monkey Island is a rather powerful force here in Sweden...

What's up with Bit.Trip Core not charting in the rest of Europe? The gamer in me is saddened by this fact...

Cause an erection is a power-up in it? Stupid Nintendo and its "family values"... GRRRRRRR...

There's an erection powerup in it? lol xD
Makes me wanna get it even more...the game...not know.

UK. Typing this from my new laptop. So this is an extra special update... Bear in mind that I wrote this yesterday, assuming I'd be typing this that evening, so it's slightly out of date...

1 (1) - Tales of Monkey Island Chapter 1
2 (5) - Family Slot Car Racing
3 (2) - My Aquarium
4 (4) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
5 (7) - My Pokemon Ranch
6 (6) - World of Goo
7 (8) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord
8 (10) - Pop-Up Pirate!
9 (9) - Driift Mania
10 (3) - Bonsai Barber
11 (11) - Onslaught
13 (14) - Bomberman Blast
14 (N) - Arkanoid Plus!
15 (12) - Swords & Soldiers
16 (20) - 3-2-1, Rattle Battle!
17 (16) - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
18 (13) - Defend Your Castle
19 (17) - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
20 (18) - Tetris Party

Up: Family Slot Car Racing continues to climb. Weird. Rattle Battle's up 4.
Down: Bonsai Barber falls the most: 7 places. My Aquarium's at its lowest since ages...
Hello: BIT.TRIP CORE debuts at 12, Arkanoid hits 14.
Goodbye: My Life As A King slips out from 19. Water Warfare bombs out from 15.

Starwolf_UK said:

Has the joke "no reel surprsies" been used yet?

That aside there is a pretty big drop on Bonsai Barber.

Pole no Daibouken is a bit of a hassle to localise. While most of the jokes are very understandable others won't be due to being puns or just things not our culture. Then there is recording lines of narration to go with the jokes. I doubt any mushrooms giving errection jokes are holding the game back.

Congrats to Over the Top games for NyxQuest. I hope it enjoys a long successful stay in the Wii Ware top 20

Supermarioman said:

Fish, My Pokemon Ranch, and My Aqarium at top 3. Just more proof that more casual people own a Wii then Hardcore. Actually I don't mind Reel Fishing Challenge and I'm kind of OK with My Aqarium, but people why are you still buying My Pokemon Ranch!

Atlantis1982 said:

Incorrect, its that more casual people are spending games while hardcore are very picky individuals that can't seem to grasp to buying actual games when its in front of their faces.

We love pokemon! Just wait till we get Pokemon Scramble It will stay on Number 1 like japans!

Gabbo said:

So Wii gamers are less interested in sex than they are in collecting pokemon. Another sad gamer stereotype lives on. Shame on all of you!

@Gabbo Sexy poker just has pics not no one actually doing sex. Also Parents wouldn't get M rated games to download for kids. If you think about it; Married couples, Kids, and no perves would buy less of sexy porker and more of Pokemon ranch. Their are more of these people than Perves that will buy this and the wii shop channel top 20 proves this. I take no shame.

Jockolantern said:

Great to see NyxQuest doing so well. I've been hoping the game would sell well in order to bolster the development of more games like it. I know I couldn't get enough of seeing more innovative, original platformers on WiiWare.

But... why is My Aquarium still so high?! WHY?!

Objection said:

As usual, fish on top. It does me good to see NyxQuest near the top though. Almost as much good as any news of LostWinds 2 would. (HINT, HINT. Seriously.)

KDR_11k said:

But... why is My Aquarium still so high?! WHY?!

Because it's better than those stupid TV aquarium DVDs?

SKTTR said:

I guess no one expected to see Family Slot Car Racing at #2 in so many countries.

Sexy Poker on 8th WOW!!!! It was still in the Top 10 Dang IT!!!!! Last time Sexy Poker was on 4th?!!!! Now on 8th?!!!!!!!!!!!! Drop Sexy Poker down off the chart!!

MarkyVigoroth said:

Wow... My Pokemon Ranch is climbing? (Such actually beat ____ Poker?)

...I would still wish for Pole to be localized. (I wonder how localized Pole will fare in the Top 10?)
