Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (22nd July)

Posted by Corbie Dillard

It's Wednesday again and time for the WiiWare Top 20!

It's time to take a look at the most popular WiiWare titles available on the Wii Shop Channel. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take a look for yourself by simply logging on to your Wii Shop Channel, heading into the WiiWare section and then viewing "Popular Games". It's that easy!

We compile this list using the USA region Wii Shop channel, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be quite a bit different. Please feel free to post your region's findings below as always.

Keep in mind that the list below is a measure of actual sales made recently, not of the total time the game has been available for sale.

Here is the list for the 22nd of July:

1 (1) - Reel Fishing Challenge
2 (2) - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
3 (6) - BUST-A-MOVE Plus!
4 (4) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
5 (5) - My Aquarium
6 (7) - World of Goo
7 (3) - Water Warfare
8 (8) - Tetris Party
9 (10) - My Pokémon Ranch
10 (9) - Family Mini Golf
11 (11) - BIT.TRIP CORE
12 (12) - Dr Mario Online Rx
13 (N) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My life as a Darklord
14 (-) - Ant Nation
15 (13) - Defend Your Castle
16 (16) - Brain Challenge
17 (17) - Cue Sports - Pool Revolution
18 (18) - Onslaught
19 (14) - Bubble Bobble Plus
20 (15) - Swords & Soldiers

* (N) - Denotes a brand new entry on the Top 20
* (-) - Denotes a game that was not on the Top 20 last week

Well the top two games remain intact, but BUST-A-MOVE Plus! did manage to climb three more places to take the #3 spot this week. Our old faithful World of Goo even managed to climb up a spot to #6.

This week brough two new games to the Top 20 with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My life as a Darklord debuting at #13 in its first week of availability and Ant Nation jumping onto the chart at #14 in its second week out of the gate.

The big climber this week was Ant Nation, which came from all the way off the chart completely all the way up to #14. The big dropper this week was Bubble Bobble Plus and Swords & Soldiers, both of which fell five spots to #19 and #20 respectively. Could this be their last week on the Top 20?

Once again Bomberman Blast and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King have dropped out of the Top 20. Is it for good this time?

Looks like Water Warfare's still doing good. If this keeps up maybe Hudson will make us a sequel. It's surprising that Reel Fishing Challenge is still doing so well. I guess it's WiiWare's first decent fishing simulator.

18 (16) - The Incredible Maze
19 (-) - LostWinds
20 (-) - Fun! Fun! Minigolf

OH COME ON! How in the world can 5 Spots Party (biggest climber) get from 8th to number 3rd? While NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits (biggest dropper) falls from 7th to 12th.

We welcome Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord which came out last week. We also see the return of LostWinds (which was a launch title for WiiWare) and Fun! Fun! Minigolf (which came out 2 Jan. 2009)

With three new titles, we say goodbye to:

  • Bit Boy !! (15 last week)
  • Puzzle Bobble Plus (18 last week)
  • Defend your Castle (19 last week)

BTW. The next two/three weeks, no Dutch list. I'm out on holiday. I can predict the top three though. 1. 5 Spots Party, 2. Texas Hold'em Tournament 3. My Aquarium. Let's pray to God I'm wrong.

Here is the Finnish list for the 22th of July:

1 (N) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord
2 (=) - Water Warfare
3 (1) - World of Goo
4 (3) - Gradius Rebirth
5 (9) - Onslaught
6 (11) - Texas Hold'em Tournament
7 (4) - NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
8 (7) - FUN! FUN! Minigolf
10 (8) - Bit Boy!!
11 (10) - Bubble Bobble Plus!
12 (19) - Tetris Party
13 (-) - Mega Man 9
14 (5) - PUZZLE BOBBLE Plus!
15 (13) - Bomberman Blast
16 (n) - 5 Spots Party
17 (14) - My Aquarium
18 (-) - Snowboard Riot
19 (18) - Swords & Soldiers
20 (16) - Brain Challenge

  • (N) - A new entry to the Top 20 that was just released on the last update
  • (n) - A new entry to the Top 20 that has been released earlier
  • (-) - A returning game that wasn't on the Top 20 last week
  • (=) - A game that hasn't changed place since last week

Welcome! Four entries this week that weren't on the list last week! I'm very happy to see our beloved 8bit hero... No, not Bit Boy! I mean Mega Man 9 make a return to the list, he deserves to be on it! Snowboard Riot also returns. And the new games: 5 Spots Party and... WHAT?! On it's first week, FFCC: My Life as a Darklord jumps right into the first spot! Amazing!

Sayonara Four new and reappering titles means four, yes, four casualties this week: Say bye to My Pokémon Ranch (12), BIT.TRIP BEAT (15), Defend your Castle (17) and Dr. Mario & Germ Buster (20). This means that no first WiiWare games on the list!

Up Well, I think everyone agrees that FFCC: My Life as a Darklord deserves the gold medal of the biggest climber this week as it jumps from totally off the list to #1, on it's first week! Impressive! Also both Mega Man 9 and Tetris Party make pretty good climbs, from off the list to #13 and from #19 to #12 (seven spots).

Down The big droppers are PUZZLE BOBBLE Plus! which fell down nine spots from #5 to #14 and My Pokémon Ranch which fell down from #12 to completely off the list. Also a dropper that should be mentioned is World of Goo which isn't anymore the king of the hill as it drops two spots to #3 this week.

All in all, this week was a week of many changes, some of them very big. Through the list only one game (Water Warfare, #2) kept it's spot when every other game moved at least one spot and we saw one incredible climber and said hello and bye to many games. So, very interesting week this was. How about the next? We'll see then!

I remember when I jotted down the top 20 earlier today and noticed 5 Spots in 12 that I though "damn, we're no better than the Dutch now"... Well, I guess you saved us.

The Swedish top 20:
(-) 1 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Darklord
(4) 2 - World Of Goo
(1) 3 - Gradius Rebirth
(6) 4 - Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
(9) 5 - Fun! Fun! Minigolf
(11) 6 - Bubble Bobble Plus!
(2) 7 - Water Warfare
(10) 8 - Texas Hold'em Tournament
(3) 9 - Icarian: Kindred Spirits
(8) 10 - Mega Man 9
(5) 11 - Bit Boy!!
(-) 12 - 5 Spots Party
(7) 13 - Swords & Soldiers
(18) 14 - Snowboard Riot
(13) 15 - Onslaught
(12) 16 - Puzzle Bobble Plus!
(17) 17 - Tetris Party
(16) 18 - My Aquarium
(15) 19 - Bomberman Blast
(R) 20 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King*

Interesting is that from a position out of the chart a few weeks ago, Fun! Fun! Minigolf has climbed all the way up to 5th place... And the thing the makes it interesting is the fact that the weather since then has turned from a warm and sunny weather with almost Mediterranean temperatures to weeks of heavy rain and general crappy weather. Guess no one wanted to play actual real minigolf anymore ever since things got a bit more humid. And also, my theory about Nintendo using a different calculation these days to base the chart on is further strengthened. Still no second week drops, aswell as that hilarious 5 places climb of 5 Spots in the Netherlands, is further evidence. And finally, Karate Phants is the fourth game to not chart on a chart day in Sweden (following Strong Bad 5, Lonpos and Penguins & Friends). And if reviews are anything to go by, it's well deserved.

2 - Super Mario Bros.
3 - Super Mario World
4 - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
5 - Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
6 - Super Mario Bros. 2
7 - Super Mario 64
8 - Mario Kart 64
9 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
10 - The Legend of Zelda
11 - Pac-Man
12 - Donkey Kong Country
13 - Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

15 - Paper Mario
16 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Master System)
17 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
18 - California Games

So there still really is no point to doing this! Save for Excitebike, Galaga, California Games and Sonic 2 Master System, the list still ain't no different than like a year ago

Which is why you should do the WiiWare chart instead.

Holy crap Bust a Move! I never would have guessed that'd hit 3rd place.

Definitely a respectable debut for CORE as well. Awesome job, as usual, Gaijin Games.

EDIT: I really did think Bit Boy would place. How odd.

C'mon Swords and Soldiers. This can't be the end for you.
Great job and a pat on the back for Ant Nation, Darklord, and the rise of Bust-A-Move Plus. Bit Boy is also nowhere to be seen.

I still can't believe that Reel Fishing Challenge is in 1st place. I hope MLAAD comes in 1st place next week!

Do we know the total numbers of the sales? How much does a game typically sell when it's #1 on the chart? I'd love to know just how much Reel Fishing Challenge has sold!

Why are people still downloading My Aquarium? Who is left who hasn't got it!? Surely the amount of times its been number one, beating even the newest big game which shot up to #2 only days after being released must mean almost everyone who has a Wii must own it by now.

Also... when is My Shovelware Ranch getting kicked off the list? Come on...
