Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (17th Dec)

Posted by Corbie Dillard

It's Wednesday again which can only mean one thing. It's time to take a look at the most popular WiiWare titles available in the Wii Shop. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take a look for yourself by simply logging on to your Wii Shop channel, heading into the WiiWare section and then viewing "Popular Games". It's that simple! Trust us, if we can do it, anyone can.

We compile this list using the USA region Wii Shop channel, so if you live elsewhere your list will probably be quite a bit different. Please feel free to post your region's findings below as always.

Keep in mind that the list below is a measure of actual sales made recently, not of the total time the game has been available for sale.

Here is the list for the 17th of December:

1 (1) - World of Goo
2 (3) - My Aquarium
3 (2) - Tetris Party
4 (8) - Space Invaders Get Even
5 (4) - Target Toss Pro: Bags
6 (5) - Brain Challenge
7 (6) - Dr Mario Online Rx
8 (10) - Defend your Castle
9 (9) - Midnight Bowling
10 (11) - Mega Man 9
11 (7) - Sudoku Challenge
12 (12) - Bomberman Blast
13 (13) - Wild West Guns
14 (14) - My Pokémon Ranch
15 (15) - TV Show King
16 (16) - Frat Party Games - Pong Toss
17 (18) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
18 (17) - The Incredible Maze
19 (N) - Strong Bad Episode 5 - 8-Bit Is Enough
20 (N) - Hockey Allstar Shootout

N denotes a new entry

No real surprise that World of Goo is once again in the #1 spot, although we did see My Aquarium jump over Tetris Party for the #2 spot, which is a bit surprising.

The big climber this week is once again Space Invaders Get Even which climbed four more spots to #4. Is it possible that we might see this game supplant one of the big three next week and put an end to their chart-topping dominance? Guess we'll just have to wait and see. The big dropper this week was Sudoku Challenge which fell four spots to #11.

As usual the newest entry in the Strong Bad series jumped up on the charts in a hurry, but we'll have to wait and see if it can manage a bit more staying power than its predecessors were able to after dropping off the charts fairly quickly. We also saw last week's stinker Hockey Allstar Shootout grab the last spot on this week's chart at #20. Some readers might remember that this title earned WiiWare World's first 1/10 rating. We're anxious to see how far up the charts this title will make it. Pong Toss has certainly managed to do quite well despite a very low rating.

World of Goo is still #1. It will be interesting to see how good it does in Europe.

(Yup, I did this ahead of time. Didn't write it all this in 14 minutes, that would be too crazy, even for me. I had some free time and I was bored, so why not you know. Don't worry, I've maybe the necessary adjustments in order to make it accurate at the time of posting.)

Hold the presses! They day it seemed would never come is here. And I'm sure plenty of you won't like it. Look below for details:

Here's the Swedish top 20:
(3) 1 - My Aquarium
(1) 2 - Mega Man 9
(2) 3 - Tetris Party
(4) 4 - Cue Sports: Snooker vs Billiards
(8) 5 - LostWinds
(6) 6 - Defend Your Castle
(7) 7 - Bomberman Blast
(11) 8 - Brain Challenge
(5) 9 - Art Style: Cubello
(10) 10 - Wild West Guns
(12) 11 - TV Show King
(14) 12 - The Incredible Maze
(16) 13 - Art Style: Rotohex
(13) 14 - Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3
(19) 15 - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King
(-) 16 - Bang!
(17) 17 - Cocoto Fishing Master
(-) 18 - Pit Crew Panic!
(18) 19 - Helix
(15) 20 - SPOGS Racing

On this week's wall of text one can read that:

  • Why yes indeed, Mega Man 9 is no longer in first?!?! Claiming that position is everyone's favorite fishtank sim My Aquarium. Yay? For 500p, heck I migh buy it aswell...
  • LostWinds is jumping up 3 spots to 5th. And this in its 30th week of release. And wasn't this game on the verge of dropping out two weeks ago? Seriously... WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!
  • Heading the opposite direction is Art Style: Cubello, dropping 4 spots to 9th. Still it's hanging in there much better than both the US release of Cubello aswell as the first US release of the Art Style series, which was Orbient. Makes me hopeful that well see all 3 games charting at the same time on Christmas Eve.
  • To counterbalance, Art Style: Rotohex is climbing 3 spots to 13th. As a comparison Cubello was 3rd in its second week. But hey, maybe its a slow burner.
  • Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3 is falling one spot after last week's disappointing 13th entry. Usually I wouldn't even mention small changes like this. However... This marks the FIRST time since I started covering these charts that any new entry failed improve its rank in its second week after being released (with the exception of Mega Man 9 that debuted in 1st and then unsurprisingly failed to improve upon that rank). If it wasn't obvious before that the Strong Bad series is suffering, it is now.
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: MLAAK is the biggest climber of the week, climbing 4 spots to 15th. Still impersonating a yo-yo I see... It's actually as old as LostWinds but its chart performance since has been much less stellar and it's doing its climbing much further down the charts so its performance this week is not as impressive as LostWinds in my opinion.
  • In 16th we have our highest new entry which is Bang!. Yep... I've had it up to here with all of these single screen elimination puzzlers so that's all I'm gonna say about this one...
  • The second new entry of the week is our lovely toilet bowl fixer sim Pit Crew Panic!. It enters at 18th (although it charted as early as Thursday and then bobbed in and out of the charts all week long). I guess this officially counts as a another swing and miss for Hudson. Seems they are still very 50/50, it's either thundering successes or spectacular duds...
  • SPOGS Racing is this weeks faller, falling 5 spots to 20th. Still it has had a rather impressive re-entry run lasting for 5 weeks so far. Just too bad that it sucks...
  • With two new entries we have two games that drop out of the charts and those are Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam and Space Invaders Get Even. YYCJ was expected seeing as it charted in 20th last week and was kinda a tough sell. Personally I'm a bit saddened by it cause it looks adorable, but not enough to actually make me buy it. Space Invaders however was not expected and this is the second week in a row that a games has fallen from 9th and then out of the charts completely. Does this bode ill for Cubello? Let's hope not...

Not too much happened this week and still I managed to produce a buttload of text. Admit it, you all wish you were as awesome as me! Next week is exciting though. With World Of Goo confirmed as a new entry one wonders, who will be at the top of the charts next week. Will World Of Goo claim first or will casual bait deluxe manage to hold it off and will the WoG release hurt or help Mega Man 9. We'll probably see Orbient aswell as maybe Sudoku Challenge and unfortunately probably Hockey Allstar Shootout but those things are of lesser importance. Next week will be all about World of Goo. However, that chart will have to wait until Christmas Day cause here in Sweden we have the habit of celebrating "Eves" rather than "Days" and thus I'll be busy all day long. So the next chart will arrive December 25th. I'm sure you're all very disappointed by that...

Man, this makes me even more excited about getting my next Wii Points card. This makes me positive that I am going to get World of Goo since it has been in first place for so many weeks. Now the only thing that I am unsure about is what I should spend the remaining 500 points for...any suggestions people? VC games would also be accepted.

If it weren't for the fact that there will be a WiiWare version I'd say Bubble Bobble. But otherwise, ignoring the well known classics of course (Super Mario/Zelda/MegaMan etc), I'd say go with StarTropics.

I don't car how good world of goo is (and yes, it's awesome, I've layed it) I'm not gonna buy it. I might just wait till Animales de la Muerte is out .... Good to see SIGE climbing the charts, might just reach number 2!

Already?
They've been on the top of the list for about 9 months?
I'm sure the makers of both games are absolutely overwhelmed by their success.

Actually, I have 1500 points saved up, and while I was planning on spending it on some VC games, I might actually consider spending it on WoG.

@Alexsays-I realize they'd been on there for a while. "Already" referred to them falling off before lesser games. Plus, I'm obviously biased towards them since I bought them both. Don't be so cynical over every little thing. You might run out of CP (Cynical Power) when you really need it. ;)
Just to return the Cynicalness: LW (May) =6 months and Toki Tori (June) = 5 months since they both fell in November if I remember correctly.

Oh great, now other developers will see it fit to pull the same stunt that Space Invaders Get Even did.

As for SB Ep.5, I think that'll do well. It has Trogdor, who ultimately is more famous than Strong Bad. I mean, Trogdor's rock theme was in a Guitar Hero game.

Since you put the charts up there has been no change, other than Brain Challenge and Pit Crew Panic swapping around. Next weeks chart (I'll try to get it up on Christmas Eve, though you probably shouldn't expect one on the eve of new year... unless the thread is up earlier during the day.) should be an interesting one, with Niki and WoG going up (the first being cheap and the second being amazing) alongside Orbient, so there could be a bit of disruption throughout the top 10.

Admit it, you all wish you were as awesome as me!

Want a chance to get Tiki Towers for free?

We here at RealArcade are about to release our next WiiWare title, Tiki Towers next Monday (12/22) though WiiWare. I should have access to gift a few lucky people a free copy of the game directly to their Wii!

Tiki Towers is a family friendly physics based puzzler that features building puzzles and monkeys! Come on - everybody loves monkeys, right?

For more info about the game, check it out here: http://playtikitowers.com/

If you're interested in possibly getting a free copy (We would have to gift it to you via the Wii Friend Code system), please send me your Wii Friend Code via email to: tikitowers@real.com

I will contact the lucky folks who responded back to me in time (I will go by order...first come first served - so hurry!) with our Wii Friend code so they can enable us to make the gift transfer. At this time, I don't know how many free games I'll be able to give out. It could be four - it could be twenty.

I'll send email responses back by Friday and we'll gift the game on Monday. If I get any more details to share, I'll update it here. I can only gift to those Wii users in the US. Sorry! I just discovered that bit.

Also, if selected, you will need to update our friend code on your Wii before Monday and enable your system to receive gifts in order to get the game. Thanks and GOOD LUCK! :)
