King of the Monsters is a wrestling game for the Neo Geo in which you control giant monsters (Obviously inspired by King Kong and such) as they battle to the death on top of cities. Unlike most fighting games you can move in any direction instead of just left and right, giving it some extra depth, but all in all, it's actually not that good of a game (Although it has it's fans - So you might still enjoy it). We recommend waiting for the sequel instead, as it is undeniably superior.
WiiWare might be a bit more interesting today. You're getting SPOGS Racing, which is a racer where you play not as a vehicle, but as a single wheel, called a SPOGS Racer. You can bump into opponents to steal parts and enhance your SPOGS Racer. Look on WiiWare World for more info, as usual.

I actually might just download both of these games this week. I was prepared to complain about the NeoGeo fighter that I was sure would be released but ... monsters are pretty fun. And the racer looks interesting enough to me that I'll pay the $10 to try it. I hope next week does not bring another NeoGeo fighter though.
I am going to politely pass thank you.
THey should put out 2 VC games this week. I ready for some Genesis for SNES games again.
I hope the VC is not being dropped to 4 games a month, but I think it is sadly. Good job NOA
I thought there would 2 vc game release this week since last week had 1.
I doubt there will be a Neo Geo fighter next week.
I think Nintendo is releasing only 1 game for the vc each week now.
I expect a tg-16 game to be the only game release on the vc as a result.
really disappointed again, thanks.
I really wish that I had some great memories of this as a kid so I would download this. Wait, sorry, I never like games that weren't very good. I was too busy playing Mortal Kombat to care about stupid monsters.
This reminds me of Rampage, except that the presentation is drastically different. Now I know that I'm usually one for trying things that are new, but even after looking at how it's played, I'm still not too convinced. I'm with the peers across the pond on this one.
Hosed once again...
Nintendo seems to have broken its pattern, but I can see a new one emerging :
1 Neo Geo figther per week!
How much more of those are there left, so we can know how long we have to wait until we get something else? Anyone familiar with Neo Geo?
At this rate, the VC will house more non Nintendo console games than Nintendo console games in less than 2 months!
Sorry for the rant, but you have to admit this is getting tedious...
Hopefully the five games being released for europe will be better than this. Im predicting last ninja 3 and SMRPG.
More garbage again this week. And this game is garbage since it got only 2 stars. I'm so sick of the NeoGeo. Give us more Nintendo and Sega games. And since the TG-16 has 3 games already announced for this month, that's probably all we're getting in July, those 3 games! Why give us only 1 game?
I have some fun memories of renting this. I wish it were released for the mega drive though so we didnt have to fork over the extra cash.
Well according to the ESRB list Art of Fighting 2, World Heroes 2, and Neo Turf Masters( a golf fighting game I guess) are still waiting to be released. Also I forgot King of the Fighers 65-2007. So thats 42 years of fighters left to go.
@mike dont forget megaman 1 for july and 2 for august but yeah what a load of #%$#@@ garbage lol they better not hold off megaman or i will kick some serious @$$ here
I'm getting sick of all the crap Nintendo is releasing on the Virtual Console lately, why must this continue? I expect better games that are worth playing, like Yoshi's Island and SMRPG.
NoA should know how their point system works by now and at least do marketing in line with it. I mean, if they release a: cheap Wiiware game that looks buyable/playable, NES, or TG-16 game that people know and is at least semi-desirable; then people will purchase 1000 wii points for it (at least and if you use point cards then you have to buy at least 2000 points worth). So basically, they're making a sell on another game or even better for them they've just left us with an amount of points too low to buy another game. Thus forcing us to buy more points later...
@Kultist
"How much more of those are there left, so we can know how long we have to wait until we get something else? Anyone familiar with Neo Geo?"
I believe there are more fighters for the Neo Geo than there are shooters for the TurboGrafx. Nintendo must really want us to download SPOGS. I hate WiiWare.
More garbage again this week. And this game is garbage since it got only 2 stars.
Just because the site gives it 2 stars doesnt mean each individual who play it is gonna give it 2 stars....
I think I'm done with vc now. if they wanna continue releasing garbage after garbage after garbage after garbage after garbage so be it.
I can't believe this... I think this means Nintendo is officially abandoning the Virtual Console here in North America. I thought there'd be no way that they would release any LESS games than 6 a month now but only a week later, they pull this BS. Eventually it'll probably just alternate to 1 a week, none the next and ultimately none ever. I'm just plain sick of this crap Nintendo, it's an injustice!
I'd also like to say that now there isn't any room for surprises this month as we have three mondays left and we know for sure of three other games coming out this month. Break In, Chase H.Q. and Star Parodier... YEE FREAKEN HA!!!!
I'm getting sick of all the crap Nintendo is releasing on the Virtual Console lately, why must this continue? I expect better games that are worth playing, like Yoshi's Island and SMRPG.
And I'm getting sick of all the American whingers who just want familiarity over anything, why must this continue? There's no wonder why you aren't getting anything, because as far as I'm concerned, some of you have annoyed the PR team to death about certain games you want and you might not even get them with the way this is going.
Sorry, but this is how things are. Like the releases or not, either you grow some skin concerning the state of affairs, or completely ditch the VC in favor of other means like what the American PR team seems to be doing.
dont forget megaman 1
Yeah, I expected this. I'd be annoyed too if we were getting these kinda weeks. I find that 5 games a fortnight that we Europeans got the last month is acceptable even if I don't want any of them (the more crap games we get, the quicker we get to the good ones is my belief) whereas one average game a week is pretty unacceptable.
A squeaky wheel gets the grease. People should let Nintendo know if they are not happy with the VC getting the back seat. Again gamers pay for the service and we should have input.
I'm trying my best to hold my tongue.
let it go man its kool all good lol. NOT
@Rexy I agree with you to a large extent. The defense for the N.A. team, which I guess I belong on, is that we're all waiting for only a handful of games (in my case, Earthbound, Ys I and II, and Megaman 64) and not only are not we not getting ANY of the ones we are looking forward to in the last 6 months, but most of the releases are highly similar (read: NEO GEO fighter, or Shmups) and we only get 1 (!!) a week. So this is almost unbareable for people waiting for just one or two games and Nintendo has it set up to say "no" for several MORE months.
@Rexy :
I'm sorry but thinking the PR team having anything to do with this and checkin around on the net to see if we deserve something good is delusional if you ask me.
I do agree with you that we can't always have SMRPG or Earthbound every week (heck, I'm not even asking for those), but you have to admit this is getting out of hand. If things go on at this rate for a few more months, I'll end up having bought an SNK or Hudson or Sega console. Not that I have anything against them, but I though I saw "Nintendo" on the white box sitting (and slowly gathering dust under my TV. As far as I'm concerned, and I don't think that's asking too much, I want Nintendo games. And I don't mean "made by Nintendo", I mean "that plays on a Nintendo console". Sure, TG16, Neo Geo and Segas are cool and I purchased a few of them, but like I said, I tought I saw "Nintendo" written somewhere on that thing...
I know what you want, but I did hear that the PR team changed since Wiiware came into play. That's what made me jump into that kind of conclusion.
Yet, I feel the understanding behind it. If I lived in America I'd be pretty angry about the situation, but it's not like me to moan about what games I WANT to play week after week. To continuously scream and shout for a game that one loved to play when younger means that one can be ridiculously picky over what they want to play, which in turn results in a very dissatisfied/impatient customer.
I don't know what America is like, but impatience and haste never gets rewarded out here - if you blatently show open agitation about a certain scenario, the merchant completely ignores you and seeks for a more "pleasant" customer. I'm seeing a similar scenario here, when those continuously screaming for first/second party Nintendo games aren't getting them because they've practically annoyed NoA's PR to death. If they don't want to release any of the highly anticipated titles for another year or two yet, then let them do as they desire instead of expecting them to arrive every single week of the year.
I've never played this, but I remember watching it on the show Nick Arcade. Looked fun.
"I'm seeing a similar scenario here, when those continuously screaming for first/second party Nintendo games aren't getting them because they've practically annoyed NoA's PR to death."
America: We want to give you lots of our money, Nintendo! Just release the games we want!
Nintendo: Sorry America, we don't want your money. Here's one average game every week.
Weeks like this make me appreciate my SNES.
There was me predicting Nintendo would bring out 2 Turbographx games this week for you guys. Shame its just an average one game week again.
Another useless NEOGEO game (which appears on the classics game thats on the vol. 1 disc).
@Complainers - We're supposed to get 3 TG-16 games this month including an import from Hudson's website!
Anyone remember Castlevania64, Wii= w/e...
Nothing that interests me this week but that is quickly becoming the norm... Xbox Jasper comes out in august and will address the RROD issue and may have Blueray... This week I am on a castlevania kick so where is Castlevania Wii?? I hate to say it but I went back to emu and couldn't be happier playing the games Big N isn't giving me to "buy". I am just dissappointed in nintendo... once again the math say it all.
Nes- 700+ / Neogeo- 150+ / Super Nintendo- 100+ / Nintendo 64- 300+ / Sega Genesis- 100+ / Turbo graphix- 100+
So that's like 1500 games. If Nintendo decided to release just 2 games from any sytem every week until all games were released that would be.... 15 years. Sounds like a long wait.... now let's take away all the great titles from companies Nintendo is not going to work with (RARE). I only have one thing to say and that is " Where's Conker, Perfect Dark!!" NOT here ever...
Nintendo has been out a few yrs so that means we have 200+ great games to choose from... SWEET!!!! only 13 more years to go. =)
don't forget that there were a lot of licensed games that won't get released. there were games based on cartoons, comics, movies, toys and real people. game companies won't pay money to get the license to a long forgotten movie just to release a single game. sure there's turtles 1 on the nes but konami still had the turtles license.
@Rexy
Seriously dude, take a hike. I purchased a wii for one reason and one reason alone: Virtual Console. I'm totally within my right to criticize Nintendo for terrible releases. I mean, look at you, you don't even actually defend the game itself. It's like you're just here to mock Americans and Canadians for being disappointed. Have you played this game? Would you download it? I highly doubt it. Why? Cause it looks like it sucks. If there was an alternative to this game I might be content but this is it. One crappy obscure game of a genre that appeals to hardly anyone that isn't even rated very highly within its respective genre. No other choice this week. And it's been this way for a couple months now.
Boring! But, I don't think even if something good came out I'd want to buy it. Between the lack of storage space and the crap that has been released the past few weeks, I'm starting to feel like NoA doesn't care about us anymore! I don't think I'm going to waste my money anymore until they give us some kind of real storage solution.
@Rexy
"I don't know what America is like, but impatience and haste never gets rewarded out here - if you blatently show open agitation about a certain scenario, the merchant completely ignores you and seeks for a more "pleasant" customer."
In America, the exact opposite is true. If you don't stand up for yourself, you get stepped on. Salesmen are constantly trying to scam you. Up until recently, I always praised Nintendo for their customer service, but now...I don't know.
Maybe Nintendo is releasing garbage games due to the storage issue. That is just a thought because when they were releasing good games people's flash drives were filling up. Now with Wii Ware people's flash drives are filling up even more and releasing good games on the VC wouldn't help either. It would just increase the complaining.
Now don't get me wrong I am not defending Nintendo. I am just as dissapointed as the majority of people in North America (NA) about the VC. But I just hope that Nintendo has a good announcement about the VC and harddrive issue at this years E3 next week. Knowing Nintendo though I doubt it as they have let me down as of late.
I for one have been wanting this game so as soon as I come across ten bucks I'm downloading it because:
A) Its really the only giant monster wrestling game done right .
B) Its got a co-op and vs mode.
C) Its a hell of a lot of fun.
i don't mind NOA releasing neo geo game weekly, it was a brilliant system with lots of wonderful games. I just wish they released games that aren't going to be on that collection disc coming out this month.
Grrr... Screw NEO-GEO, there's not a quality game on their lineup. If they would just give me Vectorman already I would shut up and stop complaining. But if you're gonna give us a crap week like this, why not give us a game you've given to the rest of the world, LIKE VECTORMAN! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! (i just shot myself in the foot)
@ChocoDK:
Well, that sure is a really backwards way to try to alleviate one problem... It's almost like trading one addiction for another, there's still a problem somewhere.
I honestly don't know what NoA is trying to do right now... It seems like they're making these releases like the last "pick-ups" in a club or bar... Where you become so desperate for any kind of hook up that you'll even take someone that's fat and hideous (no direct offense to the fat and hideous... I'm sure they make up for it in other facets).
Well, I gotta say, I'm probably not going to be taking any of these games to bed with me...
I just wish they released games that aren't going to be on that collection disc coming out this month.
Looking at everything coming up, Neo Turf Masters is the only one on the upcoming compilation thats left to be released.
Moving to Europe and buying a Wii there sounds like a pretty good idea right now...
I'm starting to believe an Earthbound sequel is in the works. Why else would Nintendo hold up the release of this old game so much? Honestly, I was going to use this game as a hold out until Jasper xbox 360's, but now I don't what I'm going to do. I might be forced to buy a competitor's product. You hear that Nintendo?!
for some reason, i thought america had seen enough crappy games, and this week we would see a good game. but thats hopeful thinking of a free man. some of us wake up every monday, just waiting to see what game is coming out today, and time, after time, after time, its disappointing, ive checked the VC list every monday since i bought my wii, may 2007. i just cant take anymore good for nothing bad weeks. im losing hope, i sorta WANT to loose my VC mindset, i dont wana get all excited, because time after time, im just disappointed. its madness.
Sometimes I just like to remember the good old days of the VC. Like the week Super Metriod, Shinobi 3 and Neutopia had me running to download all of the classic goodness. Or the week Super Castlevania and Super Mario Bros. made their VC debut, so I had hunt down a Wii console. I miss those days:(
I had a good "Fanboy Showdown" wresling joke prepared for this week, but since everyone seems to agree that this week is complete garbage, I'm not gonna do it.
Hey NOA, how about releasing games for a system I ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT? Or at least release a non-fighting Neogeo game (unless it's KOF '99). My wii needs more SNES and N64 games, like freakin' EARTHBOUND! hey someone had to say it.
@Tony. I miss those days too. *Sniff*. <crying face>
@Yoda. I highly doubt it, since I read on Wikipedia that the creator of Earthbound said he had no plans to make another game in the series after Mother 3. Though they could be translating M3 or working on that romored Mother collection 4 DS.
I knew we'd get KOTM at some point, but did it have to be the only game for the entire week??
If Nintendo thinks they are keeping the fanbase happy with one or two acceptable WiiWare titles and one hit or miss VC title a week they are dead wrong. I hope, for their sake, that they get their act together and give us some good games.
I also used to be excited on monday mornings and I would come here to see what awaited me after work... Now I just come here to see how much of a disappointment it's going to be. Sad thing is, a year and a half in the console's life, I now hardly see a reason to hang to it. VC has dried down to a brownish dribble, WiiWare looks too much of a rerun show (Breakout circa 1970!) and I don't think there is more than a dozen Wii games really worth having, depending on one's preferences. No offence, but I'm starting to eye towards the Linux modding community... Never thought I'd get there with the Wii
Every Monday when I go into the Shop channel and see the new releases, I think to myself: I wish I had an xbox 360 right about now.
There are plenty more great games out there for these systems. But we've still got a few years of Wii left, so they're going to spread this stuff out, more so now than before. And don't be so quick to knock the Neo Geo system. There were some fantastic games for this console, but right now it seems the early generation Neo Geo titles are the ones they're mainly releasing. The best is yet to come.
This is horrible what NoA is doing to the virtual console, I have looked at the three most recent nintendo power issues under the top five games that the public demands that should be released on the virutal console and the ones that the people always want are: Earthbound (Super NES), Mother (NES/Japan only), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Super NES), Chrono Trigger (Super NES), The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64), and Super Smash Bros. (N64). So, as you can see here, there are three Super NES games, two N64 games, and one NES game, and no other types of games from any non-nintendo system that the public demands to have on the virtual console. Maybe NoA should start reading nintendo power or start giving us some nintendo games for a nintendo system!
meh, since i'm the kind of person that doesn't spend much money, i've only (gasp) purchased 4000 Wii points in the entire year that i've had my Wii. In doing so I still have 1000 blocks free and 1700 Wii points. I knew something like this would happen to the VC eventually so I for one am glad that I didn't download games every week. now I suppose I'll just get another game (or two) that I didn't download before and play through it. That should keep me contempt until the next "good" week.
Its nothing personal against Neo- Geo. I mean I really like Fatal Fury and Metal Slug. Its just I think gamers want more variety. I myself purchased a Wii just for Genesis and SNES games on the VC. They have been sorely missed over the past few months.
Seriously I'm getting a little p'd off with Nintendo of Japan or whoever it is releasing VC games to NA. Fine, we may not get titles like Japan or a nice chunk of games like Europe (5 VC games one week, 2 WiiWare games the next) but at least give us NAs some kind of consistency. Not to knock Neo Geo but SNK Arcade classics is coming out this week. It's like WiiWare is the main focus here and VC is being pushed to the brink of extinction.
Keep away from VC. King of the Monster is not a great, sracth that, is not a good game. The CPU has autofire whe shes pin down, answer quickly (a la MK II, SF II, Tekken, DOA,etc. you get the idea) to inputs and no good soundtrack. Save your money for better things.
Reply @ 49. Mr. Cheez : We need Pocky & Rocky series, KOF '98, DodgeBall, Shock Trooper (PS2 version sucks! keep away from SNK AC Volume 1 for PS2) series, Super Mario PRG, Translated version of Mario Picross, Translated (at least for instructions) version fo Mario Cement Factory for SNES (only released for Japan), etc.
@ClassicMike
Nintendo of America has nothing to do with Chrono Trigger not being released on the vc. SquareEnix is repsonsible for that. SquareEnix only cares about making the most money on a game.. They want the customer to buy a remake of a game full price than put the same game on the vc.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has some type of an emulation problem. It existed with Gamecube disc that had The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on it. It is possible the issue still exists with that game.
Chrono Trigger gets remaked for DS so Square would be stupid to release it on VC before the end of 2009.
You get really kicked from NoA at VC releases, but see the positive site: Those games are old, you can get those you want on ebay or somewhere else if you're lucky (and very expensive).
Europeans get only 4 Wiiware Games per month, which are new games, if we want to get interesting games we have to wait until NoE releases them (of course I could import an US Wii, but you could do the same for VC games already out in EU too )
alright, more crap. another week of playing gta iv, guitar hero and rock band. but hey, i might be getting guitar hero aerosmith and guitar hero on tour this week
If you're not happy with the VC, surf over to ebay. They have Sega Genesis, Super NES, NES, Neo Geo, Nintendo 64, TurboGrafx-16, and many other consoles. They you can just buy the game and have it whenever you want it. No lines...no waiting.
Otherwise you're going to just have to take it whenever Nintendo and the other VC companies give it to you. They're not going to change.
Another week, another disappointment. I hate to pile on and I'm by no means against trying games I've never played before (some of my fav VC titles are things I had never really played/heard of before), but the trickle of mediocore titles we've been getting this year makes me long for 2007, when I actually looked forward to mondays. Now NoA isn't giving us many abominations, but they aren't exactly giving us too many true classics anymore either. I don't mind getting one game a week if it's a truly great game, but if they're going keep up with this slow trickle of average games, they should at least give them to us in bunches. That'd be a lot easier for me to swallow, instead of taking a month to release 3 or 4 titles that are only going to appeal to a certain group of gamers. And besides, aren't most of these Neo Geo releases part of the SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1? Much moreso than the total lack of VC releases, I find it rather insulting that the only things we've been getting are Neo Geo titles that cost $9 individually, when we can just go out and buy 16 of them for about $15-$30 total. For the exact same console!
Also, where's Mario's Super Picross!? : (
@RevolverLink I dont know where Picross is. Its been ESRB rated for a while now. But it IS Ninty we're dealing with.
EDIT: Somehow I got this wrong. it is not ESRB'd. I went there recently and thought I spotted it but was wrong.
In other news, there is a Doctor Mario Wii and Dr Mario Online RX ESRB'd. Do you think that's just reflecting the name change or is it another Dr Mario? If so, why is it still up on ESRB.org?
@Rexy
I'm sick of every week when America gets their garbage "game", you come onto this site with your holier than thou attitude and basically say that Americans have no right to complain over the trash that Nintendo has chosen to give us in 2008. You make it sound like every American are spoiled brats waiting for Earthbound and SMRPG. No, we are complaing because we get 1 lousy game a week!
Here is an idea. If you don't like how Americans complain every week, stay out of the topic that announces the VC releases for America each week.
For the record, I went ahead with the suggestion to write to NoA about VC release schedule (or lack of). Though I doubt I will receive a satisfying answer, at least I'll have the satisfaction of having done what I could (along with not buying VC until something decent is released). I suggest we all do the same, it cannot hurt to let NoA know how we feel. They'll know that some people do care about VC.
I LOVED this game when I was a kid, granted I had it for the Super Nintendo...
Again tho, I already own this on the SNK Arcade Classics for the PSP... This is an awesome game tho
But for reals Nintendo, no more NEO*GEO for awhile
@Objection_Blaster: Mario's Super Picross is not ESRB rated, I personally think the US isn't getting it.
First of all people, it has nothing to do with customer service. I almost guarantee you it's all licensing and contractual. I want SMRPG and all those others just as much as anyone else, but there are issues and other avenues that have to be explored for each region. Maybe Square hasn't licensed SMRPG for NA yet. You have to remember that some of the games we're asking for are from other publishers/developers. On the other hand, Nintendo DOES seem to be holding out on ITS stable of superb games like Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, Pro Wrestling, etc. I can't defend that... So they do seem to be stringing us out... Again
@Rexy
Most of our complaints here in NA stem from the fact that the VC is not doing what they promised us it would do. They change patterns, release games with questionable quality, and keep secrets. Sure there are great games, and I understand they can't all be the ones we want, but with so many that we are still looking forward to, the continual release of bad to mediocre games is getting tedious and frustrating. So many of the games released lately can be found on recent collections and rereleases. And the NEO*GEO appeals to so few to begin with (In my experience), so we are tired of the games. I agree that there are whiny, desperate, and annoying people on the boards, but their frustration is not without merit (Most of the time)
This monster fighting game is not too bad. I'd give it 3 stars.
Pardon me if this has been posted elsewhere, but have any of you considered that the reason the Virtual Console has been the way it is the past few weeks (in America) is that Nintendo is trying to release as many Neo Geo games BEFORE the release of SNK Arcade Classics, hoping that uninformed gamers might bite (and buy), and that they only release one a week so that gamers have no other option?
Tthat is the only way I can make sense of NOA's current "treatment" of the Virtual Console.
Not that I'm complaining; I own over 30 VC games, most of which I haven't even started playing, so it's nice to save a little money (especially considering the price of gas and milk!).
Nooooooooooooooo! Do not download King of Monsters -- you will HATE yourself for it after the first two minutes. It's one of the dullest games I've ever played. I remembered having some fun with it in the arcades until I picked up the SNK Arcade Classics disc for $20 on the PS2 (overall an excellent collection, and coming to the Wii soon: 16 Neo-Geo games, one of which is KoM). I played KoM for about five minutes until I realized it wasn't going to get any better or faster (walk over to other monster... punch other monster... wait while other monster punches you and you fall down... wait while your monster rolls around and gets back up... walk back over to other monster and punch them. repeat ad nauseam) and haven't been back to it since. Practically any Neo-Geo game is better than KoM (including Magician Lord).
I totally agree with Macfly... It's all contracts and strategy
My wii needs more SNES and N64 games, like freakin' EARTHBOUND! hey someone had to say it.
Ugh, yes, and someone ALWAYS does....
Well, I'll just say that I'm rather infuriated with this week's VC release. It's not the game itself that I'm mad at (although I've heard it wasn't too great) but once again the lack of releases we've been receiving. We didn't even get two, for Pete's sake...
I looked forward to the VC because it was supposed to be the answer to the drought of games that occurs every summer. While it still provides games, it doesn't reach the expectations I had anymore... I don't even want three games a week. I'm fine with two.
To the people that complain about "American whiners", you are proving yourselves to be just as bad as the whiners. I know I can flip over to one of the EU release pages where you guys got nothing and I'm sure I can spot more than a handful European's complaining. The fact of the matter is, you can say the whole "be thankful for what you are getting" argument all you want, but there is no denying the VC was better last year. I don't have much money lately so I don't really care what does and doesn't get released, but I can understand why some people are getting upset. If the American whiners bother you so much, just ignore it. You're superior attitude is not gonna make people stop whining.
And before you say that I spelled "whining" wrong, that's how it's spelled in NA, or America at least.
I know you're all angry because of the VC release scenario. And to be honest, you are right in saying that the Neo Geo library is currently lacking somewhat (except maybe Metal Slug). But I'm usually one to say never give up, and pretty much hope that something could turn up to some extent.
And I'm not at all saying you're all "spoilt brats" just by asking for the greatness that is Earthbound and the mediocrity (my opinion) of SMRPG. It's just that I've got it fixed in my head from the past few updates now that that's all you ever want. People shouldn't have their hopes up all the time, because if they do, feelings would crash down like barrels of thunder and that would actually be a painful sight. Assuming that the ratings are still there (or just about), they'll be there - just give them time.
Hey Will.... do you really "predict" those games are coming out or are you just hoping they come out? Why don't you take off your mask and face reality?
Thought this might interest a few people. Here is the answer I got from the email I sent to NoA saying I was disappointed with VC :
"I appreciate your taking the time to share your comments with us in regard to the number of Virtual Console games that are being released. I will forward your email on to the appropriate department for further review. While you won't be contacted further regarding this issue, please rest assured that your feedback will be taken into consideration when planning future releases."
I am surprised to see I didn't get the automated answer I was expecting. Sure I won't get a follow up on this, but I least I got the chance to say what I had to say to those concerned. I encourage those unhappy with what VC is turning into to write to NoA and tell them what they think of it. The more of us are heard, the more chances somebody will take notice.
"I will forward your email on to the appropriate department for further review."

@Drake. Mario's Super Picross isn't necessary anyway, given that we in America can just get picross DS.
There are dozens of games besides Earthbound and SMRPG that I missed out on but would try out on VC. Games like Castlevania III, Majora's Mask, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic SMS, Phantasy Star, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Blaster Master and dozens of others have yet to see the light of day. Yet Ninty insists on shoving crap down our throats. So no I don't consider myself a "Whiner".
Why, why, why? Why does every single game for the Neo-Geo have to be a fighting game? I suck at fighting games, grumble...
I also suck at sports games and shooters. But nearly every single Neo-Geo game to date has been a fighter. Why? Surely there's something else from that console that could possibly be good. The only Neo game I downloaded was "Blue's Adventure" and I don't like swapping out the component cable, grumble...
The greatest 2D console, and Nintendo has alienated a few of their fans (like me) by only releasing titles from within specific genres. I wish I could love this system - but I can't. Sorry, Nintendo failed me again...
When was the last time we got an N64 game? That is really the main reason I bought the wii was for the N64 games. I will admit that I did not understand the licensing system 2 years ago, and i will probably never be able to play my beloved turok, and SW:Shadows of the Empire, but come on, when will we get Majoras Mask?
King of the Monsters might just be cult enough for me to give it a download later this week, and the SPOGS racing sounds like Uniracers on the SNES, but instead of a unicycle you got a wheel, go figure...
Ooo. Blaster Master. I'd love to see that game released. That's not got any licensing issues, right?
I'm not gonna complain. I mean, I've been complaining, you heard them from everyone, so whatever. But I'm waiting here to spend some money. And I'll keep waiting for now.
Mario's Super Picross isn't necessary anyway, given that we in America can just get picross DS.
Er....Picross DS was released in Europe way before it was in America.
Also I have a new goal: To see a US VC Release News Post that doesnt immediately swerve into bickering and complaining and what have you.
When was the last time we got an N64 game?
Um....early May? I wonder if people like to forget Pokemon Puzzle League on purpose...and now that the Turbografx is coming back to US, SNES is now the longest gap in releases.
Also when you consider that Majora's Mask is the last VC-able Zelda game, I kinda figure Nintendo wants to savor the moment.
I wonder if people like to forget Pokemon Puzzle League on purpose...
Due to the footage displayed on the appropriate page, I put it all down to the licensing over the fact that in terms of gameplay, it is superior in comparison to Tetris Attack. Yet, there's something about the Pokemon franchise that tends to receive a lot of awkward stigma around here (possibly the heavy emphasis on the anime and store merchandise).
"I have a new goal: To see a US VC release post that doesn't immediately swerve into bickering and complaining and what have you."
Yeah. Good luck with that.
@Stardust. Not to be Nitpicky, but I think you mean Blue's Journey. Just sayin'. I sometimes make that mistake too.
@Rexy: I'm all for trying new games (many of the VC games I've bought are ones I'd never heard of before), but that doesn't mean every game is gonna be one that appeals to me. The fewer games released, the less likely I am to be interested in one, so this trend of only one game a week makes me sad. :<
I agree, i think i will pass again this week. to bad i have had 3,200 points saved for awhile now just waitin to spend them.
I intend to non-politely pass. Actually, I've gotten into playing actual classic console games instead of VC--why wait for them to appear on VC when I can just get them in pawn shops and ebay?
@stinssd
I agree. I got secret of evermore a few months ago on ebay for $10. I whipped out SMRPG, Illusion of Gaia, and Secret of mana the other day, and all those carts still works perfectly. What do I need VC for if all nintendo is going to give us is crap? I think I'll be boycotting the service until they stop screwing around with us. I can't stand the fluctuating # of releases per week, all the neo geo fighters, and most of all, the fact that they completely have disregarded the storage issue.
I wanted to give you my money, nintendo, I really did.
In comparison to last year around this time, we got Mach Rider, Yoshi, and Air Zonk. I used to think last year's releases sucked, but now when I look back on them, I don't feel the same... maybe those Brits are onto something about us being whiners...
NAH
Hey Ender your avatars Crazy Taxi Cool (In a very "Hey, I'm a gay chiropractor, so I know these things" sort of way)
Like, but really? Whats going on there? Is that like, pseudo real-Mario? Who puts butter on their iPod anyway?
@StarDust: "Why, why, why? Why does every single game for the Neo-Geo have to be a fighting game?"
That was the dominating genre in arcades at the time, and the Neo Geo is an arcade machine. Plus, we got plenty of non-fighters. Give Metal Slug, Top Hunter, Magician Lord and Baseball Stars 2 a try.
@Mr. Cheez: "There are dozens of games besides Earthbound and SMRPG that I missed out on but would try out on VC. "
Yet you seem to discredit a ton of great games because "they are on a console you have no interest in". No, sorry, not seeing the logic here. Good games are good games, regardless of where they were released.
The worst n saddest part is that NOA thinks they´re releasing excellent games ...
At least I got 100th comment ! (Way harder to achieve than 1st, and therefore better)
@WiiWare
... Wait... Are those Pogs? Like... 1996 Pogs? For real? Racing?
I hate WiiWare today
@Smoke39: I did express my feelings on how you are getting fewer and fewer games (or if I didn't, that's my memory gone down the drain) and like I said, I'm with you on that one. It's like going into a restaurant and finding out that all you can order is fish and chips - awkward as Hell, I tell you. I really hope NoA end up looking into it and give what the Americans truly want most importantly - diversity.
After a day of thinking about it, it's pointless for me or anyone of us to complain anymore. We make it seem as if Nintendo OWES us these games but as a company they are perfectly well within thier rights to offer us whatever they feel appropriate. Still it boggles my mind that Nintendo would throw something as lucrative as the Virtual Console on the back burner in the largest region, but that seems to be what's happening. Whether things will improve or not is completely up in the air at this point but sad to say, I personally think it won't happen for a while, if at all.
Back when Wii was announced and I had heard of the service for the first time, I had high hopes and up until May of this year I was fairly satisfied with the way it had been handled. Now that we have Wiiware, I guess NOA feels that should be enough. To be honest, if I had known this was going to happen I would've been against Wiiware from the beginning, as I'm sure many of you would have been as well.
I guess the only thing us North Americans can do is accept that this great idea will never reach its full potential for us and move on. It's a shame, though, as this is a big loss for BOTH Nintendo and it's fanbase.
Square, Konami, and Rare are the "License" issues because they actually want NOA to shell out some cash for the games...
@Rapadash6
"After a day of thinking about it, it's pointless for me or anyone of us to complain anymore. We make it seem as if Nintendo OWES us these games but as a company they are perfectly well within thier rights to offer us whatever they feel appropriate."
I think the reason a lot of us on this site feel Nintendo owes us is because Nintendo has had a very loyal fanbase in North America all these years. Part of the reason Nintendo survived during the rough times was because of the loyalty of its fans.
I've noticed a change over at Nintendo this past year. They outsourced the publication of Nintendo Power and no longer publish their own Player's Guides. They give us nothing for registering games and have stripped their website down to the bare essentials. I don't get the same sense of community from them that I used to.
For a lot of you, the Wii is your first Nintendo console in a long time so you may be puzzled or annoyed when we complain. You're right in the fact that Nintendo doesn't owe us anything. However, loyalty goes both ways and if Nintendo doesn't owe us anything then we don't owe Nintendo anything. If Nintendo is going to be a jerk company like Sony or Microsoft, what's stopping any of us from going over to the other side.
It's funny. I finally own a number one console, but it sure doesn't feel that way. It seems that all the big names keep coming out for the XBOX 360 and the PS3. The third party support on the Wii is worse than it was on the GameCube. The Wii is popular now, but that could change at anytime. Nintendo will need its core audience if that change happens. Nintendo shouldn't make its fans angry. Sega learned that lesson the hard way.
@firebrand
As a loyal Nintendo fan of twenty years or so, I am totally down with what you're saying. I stuck with Nintendo all that time and I think they really should reward people like me. Virtual Console would be a good outlet for them to do so, definately, but unfortunately for those of us in North America, our loyalty and dedication mean nothing to them, it seems. I don't know about you and any others who frequent this site, but I'm getting very close to giving up on Nintendo completely. They've broken promises before but this one really takes the cake for me, and I'm both tired of waiting for the situation to improve and moreso, I'm tired of complaining about it. There just isn't any excuse for this anymore, save MAYBE that they are slowing releases preparing for some kind of storage solution. That would probably just be wishful thinking on my part, though.
Well, most of my rash posting IS indeed based on the fact that this is my first Nintendo home console (though I have all the handhelds minus that dreaded Virtual Boy), so I have understanding on what people can be like when sticking with companies for a long time. The attitude there was very similar to my links with Sony - promising first console and game range, the PS2 was similarly worthy with the DVD and PS1 game playback, yet the PSP currently doesn't have any stellar games on it and the PS3 is currenlty way too screwed up to look into it at the moment (similarly with very few interesting games).
A similar thing can be said about Microsoft - the XBox360 was rushed, and even though it's stated that the Red Ring of Death problem will be resolved, it doesn't alter the fact that there still aren't that many interesting games for those that want to play stuff other than first person shooters, not to mention that it suffers similar backwards compatability problems with the PS3.
Considering that my prior console to the Wii - the PS2 - was starting to deprive of anything good to purchase through the whole of 2007, I wanted to make a move to a new console that would offer something rewarding. So far the Wii seemed to do that, as well as starting to get my extended family into gaming.
Even though Nintendo could be facing a moderate decline as you are stating, I'm actually convinced that they won't end up getting any worse than what Sony and Microsoft are doing right now. And as long as there's still stuff to keep me interested and keep up the customer service work over the years, then that's fine by me. I know what you're saying with the slower releases and lack of storage solution though, and even though space isn't an issue for me at the moment, I hope that something like that can come to light in the coming months.
@Rexy
That's awesome, dude, but the point everyone on this side of the pond was trying to make is that a lot of you European types (You and Adamant in paticular) don't seem to do anything but criticize us for our dismay at how badly Nintendo is handling the VC here right now. It's all good and well to insist we try new games but there AREN'T any new games. You European folks have your Hanabi festivals and all kinds of great games that we would LOVE to have a shot at but don't even get the option to try. You guys had some pretty slim pickings when VC first started but most of us Yanks and Canucks sympathized with you instead of insisting you suck it up and stop whining. Opinions are awesome but it seems like you and Adamant just enjoy baiting a bunch of people who are already pretty glum about their $300 investment sitting in the corner.
@Rexy

Yeah, the red ring of death is a huge problem for the 360. Lack of backwards compatibility on PS3 isn't good, but I don't really take advantage of backwards compatibility on my Wii so it's not a deciding factor for me. Also, the PS3 actually has some decent games this year. Maybe I wouldn't be so down on the Wii if I knew what was coming out, but Nintendo is so tight lipped lately.
@el carbato
Dude, they already stated that they do feel bad about our VC releases, don't be so defensive
And yeah, after a day of thinking about it I've realized that it doesn't matter, because the hardcore Nintendo fans will always be there... And I really do think that it all has a lot to do with licensing and contracts... It's not just Nintendo. Remember when they released all that Genesis stuff in rapid fire? Well that Genesis collection was getting ready to be released, so maybe they're just doin' the same thing with these SNK games...
I am disappointed that the games I want aren't out for the VC yet, but I am grateful for the ones I got a chance to play. Beyond Oasis, Wonder Boy, and the imports are all great games that I wouldn't have otherwise even known about, had it not been for the VC
@firebrand
Name more than three games coming out for PS3 that aren't going to be available on the 360 =P
@MaxPlastic
1. Buzz! Quiz TV
2. LittleBigPlanet
3. Resistance 2
4. WipEout HD
@firebrand
I meant more than three that people will care about =P lol Just kidding; Touche
@MaxPlastic
It was easy. I just looked for any game being published by Sony.
Dude, they already stated that they do feel bad about our VC releases, don't be so defensive
Thank you Max. As stated, the variety for the VC in America is really slim and it doesn't help that the audience there are being nitpicky over what they want. I too am among those that want the situation to improve concerning the number and so forth.
Concerning that PS3 list though, the only one that intrigued me from it is Little Big Planet. Likewise, Resistance 2 and Wipeout HD - in spite of looking most likely to be awesome for their respective genres - are among the many cluttering types of racing simulations and first person shooters that are dominating the PS3, and as much amusement as I had with some of the Buzz PS2 games at parties throughout much of 2006, it can't really be called a game for an actual gamer to pick up and play - that's like saying Singstar is some kind of triple-A title or something. If there's very poor variety, then I'm still not game as far as the PS3 is concerned.
Right I forgot about PPL in may, so i guess were due for a new N64 game soon then.
@Kazi777 This is a pic i got off of Nintendowiifanboy.com
they did an article on some photoshoped Nintendo characters that were really creepy, i think there was also a bowser, just google it.
I called NOA and I hope they do something about the decline of VC releases, I mean why must this continue? Seriously, I wish Nintendo would release like 5 or 6 games each week which would be like 25-30 games a month, that would be nice. If Nintendo did that, we would have like 300-360 games by the end of this year.
This is probably the game that inspired "War of the Monsters" for the PS2. If you want some good monster bashin' fun just play that game and leave this game in the garbage heap where they found it.
Yeah. Good luck with that.
You know at this point Id just settle for
"Ah well. Nothing for me this time but better luck next week!"
instead of the now common
"Nintendo, I will kill you and your entire families and everyone who still thinks youre cool if you keep releasing games that I dont want or never heard of or arent on a previous Nintendo console. Now give me your lunch money or Ill pound you!"
You all do realize there are more things in gaming than just the VC, like the actual Wii releases, and for that matter, ALL console releases? Also, if you don't like what's coming onto the Wii, why don't you get the original console or download an emulator
@WarioFa63
I'm really sick of this too. I don't mnd nothing this week, or meh week, but I do mind "Someone shoot me"
^ You guys have a point, but you see, there's not really much releasing for wii retail-wise, either (besides SM Sluggers and De blob IMO). At least I'm not like SOME people here who say things like "OMG nintendo keeps disappointing me with the VC ever week. RAAAAAAA I hate Nintendo now and I think they should burn in HEEEEELLLLLLL!!" Plus, the wii is the only console I have right now, since my sister took my PS2 for the DVD player (she lives in an apartment.)and I still don't have a Xbox 360 yet, which as you may have figured I want quite badly.
I've found myself a dedicated nintendo fan for most of my life, and I do love those people who say they are longtime fans of nintendo but aren't anymore because of crappy VC releases as of recent. Are they even aware of the success of the DS? Yea, the wii's not doing that great right now, but I think Ninty's doing pretty well w/ themselves handheld market-wise, as to be expected. And in conclusion, Yes I realize now that we shouldn't be expecting triple-A titles EVERY week, but I can't help but feel disgruntled every Monday when I go on the shop channel, only to be greeted with crap like king of the monsters and SPOGS racing, instead of something that I would actually download.
@Ender. I thought you got that pic from Uncyclopedia's Mario article. It's Mario in Ultrahyperreal3D technology!
Arcade conversions can be nasty, though. In a fighting game, the first match is so pansy you'll score a perfect match with ease, while the last fighters are about a jillion times harder, so you'll feel like you've made all kinds of progress, not wanting to lose it, and keep putting quarters in.
So personally, I'm mostly not too wild about unaltered arcade conversions, since they are innately designed to munch quarters and have that monster difficulty spiking.
. . . I'll never forget the last level of Ghouls 'n Ghosts, an otherwise awesome game with such a fantastically hard last level (I think I overheated my Xbox for trying it too many times over many hours on a collection).
@ firebrand and maxplastic
(I own all three conoles) Xbox 360 is losing Bioshock as an exclusive. I won't be surprised if more and more follow. But I can't believe you didn't mention: Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2 . . .
And I still say MGS4 is head-and-shoulders above ANYTHING on the 360 (not to mention graphics-wise).
Edit: Also: Disgaea 3, Infamous, the upcoming Castlevania . . .
@ Ender.
Damn, your avatar was much more pleasing on the eyes than the full-sized picture. Made me vomit on my dick hardcore.
@Cally. Bioshock wasn't XB 360 exclusive per se. It was also available for PC. Edit: Tho I want MGS4, FF XIII, God of War 3, Littlebigplanet, and Resistance 2 for PS3, I also want games like Dead Rising, Ninja Gaiden II, Fable 2, Pacman championship edition, Ikaruga, and Mass Effect on 360 more. Though I have been wanting a PS3 for that amazing blu-ray player, my mind is set on a 360.
@Cally
Yes yes, but we all know those don't come out until 2012 lmao =P
Seriously tho, as a gamer, I do want to own all three consoles (I have most retro consoles, except TG16, Virtual Boy, Dreamcast). The only one out of the three I have right now is Wii... But I want a 360 next. My girlfirend wants me to get the PS3 'cause it's a BluRay player tho... The only game currently for PS3 that I'm excited about is LittleBigPlanet
Edit: Oh and of course MGS4
@ 7th lutz: well, I'm just trying to make a point by saying that NoA should start releasing some nintendo classics on their own virtual console shop instead of giving us non-nintendo games for the last month.
@classicmike: Nintendo of America can do as they please. I have understood the argument concerning Nintendo's most loyal customers, but seriously - given that Sega/Hudson/SNK consoles are also among the lineup, not to mention the occasional import, I think they're aiming not strictly towards the faithful Nintendo supporters but also to pretty much every retro gamer that has owned a cartridge-based home console in the past.
Also, you made it sound as if the world receiving Metal Slug was a bad thing. o_O
It would be nice if Nintendo paid attention to the Nintendo Power VC polls. I don't think KOM made the top 5 list though
Also they should use the Everbody votes channel to let people have a say in upcoming VC games.
And yes this is one of the worst VC/Wiiware weeks in a long time
As ideal as it sounds, the Everybody Votes Channel only allows for two options per question. How can such a restricted system decide the fate of the next few games for the VC?
@ Rexy
They could modify it if they choose too.( I know this won't happen)
Here is my new theory for the wacky release schedule for the VC. Nintendo is building up the Neo-Geo library the same way they did the Turbo and Genesis. The Neo-Geo will get up to about 30-40 games and then Nintendo will focus on the SMS. Then Europe and the US will be flooded with SMS games until it reaches 30-40 games. After that hopefully Nintendo will balance things out and bring games for each system each month.
SMS means one thing for me - Phantasy Star 1
But I do see what you mean by balancing things out. However, it's a shame that they haven't even done that to the Nintendo 64 yet so I pretty much doubt that balance would be spread right across all platforms. It's a good theory though, but we don't even know what the release schedules would be like ultimately.
I hope they do balance it out more because I am such a fan of the 16-bit platforms. (SNES and Genesis)
They can release whatever they want, for all I care... after they release SMRPG. It's a crime, making us wait so long for that fantastic game.
@Madmanonfire
I'm personally not one of those who is expecting specific titles like SMRPG right away but more that the releases are steady. Obviously I'd LOVE to go to the shop channel right now and download that game, but my anger is more that Nintendo has flat out broken the promise of at least 10 games a month. If we do indeed only get 4 games this month, it'll mean a much longer wait for the games that we DO want, Super Mario RPG included. It's the lack of variety that's the real issue here.
I don't want Mario RPG, but that's not the point. What IS the point though, and it's been echoed throughout, is that we need more quantity. Those that are just hanging around the VC waiting for something in particular are just setting themselves up to be constantly disappointed, and that kind of attitude is disappointing me too.
@Rexy
"Those that are just hanging around the VC waiting for something in particular are just setting themselves up to be constantly disappointed, and that kind of attitude is disappointing me too."
QFT
The only thing that worries me a little is that, with all the people going from frustrated to complacent and burnt out, someone at Nintendo is going to think something like "well, almost nobody's downloading the one game we release every week anymore so maybe we should give up on the market." Like, minus feedback, some moron might conclude that people just don't care anymore and that it doesn't have something to do with the real reasons why they are losing interest.
Personally, therefore, I'm totally on the side of the complainers. I don't think Nintendo is going to get their feelings hurt so badly by all of it that they would punish their fan base at their own expense.
Somebody wrote NOA and I'm trying to figure out how to do it myself. Yes, there are better things to do in life, but I personally enjoy the exercise.
I had this game on the Megadrive back in the day and it was fun (albeit a button basher) so I might buy this version too.
@Cally

I've thought the same thing, but if that happens, so be it. I'm not buying games that I don't want to play just to keep the service going,
Oh well. At least we still have Captain Rainbow to look forward to.
"I'm not buying games that I don't want to play just to keep the service going,"
Certainly not. And of course, if someone actually did something like that it wouldn't exactly send the suppliers the right info about the demand, anyway.
Nintendo deserves credit where it's due, and after that, power to the complainers.
Maybe Nintendo's plan right now is to release a single game from the NeoGeo classics collection every week in order to get a leg up in sales on the VC before it releases (which many other people here think), If I'm right, It'll probably be a while before we see this trend change. There are still 5 games left on the collection not yet on VC. They are:
Sengoku
Neo Turf Masters
Shock Troopers
Last Resort
Super Sidekicks 3
If that IS Nintendo's plan, to catch up to the Collection, why don't they just release the games in 2s or 3s, and save us complainers the constant disappointment and`... complaining fuel?
After all, Rexy made a good point earlier. the problem is less a lack of GOOD games, but a lack of games period.
I think the games are to please people who just want one game but don't want to pay for the full collection - I've bought Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters '94 the day they were put up here despite knowing there would be the collection many months later; I just didn't want to wait. But then I got myself Metal Slug Collection on PS2 for £2 last week (was £4 but got a half price deal on it). Bargain. I think D4 decides what NeoGeo games they want to put up on VC - whereas Nintendo doesn't want to put up All Stars because of the NES games, D4 doesn't seem to mind putting up games that will soon be available on a collection.
Phantasy Star IV will be excellent, but I'm not holding my breath on it. Whichever, I'll be happy to wait patiently for tonight's releases.
Rexy has an excellent point about people waiting for certain games being constantly set up for failure... Actually, everyone has made excellent points... Time to kill the thread...
I am not biting. I will wait for the SNK collection. Actually I just picked up Metal Slug 3 for the Xbox. I don't know when the VC will get around to it.
The thread and rants and complaints will resume on Monday
Come on good games for Europe!
Just checking the time in europe... oooo past midnight GMT!! Is this the release time? Is england all one time zone?
@ Rexy: I guess I have to explain my point again being that you and 7th lutz can't understand me clear enough. I'm just saying that nintendo should start getting some more nintendo classics instead of non-nintendo classics.
@ Tony and Rapadash6: thank you for backing me up against Rexy.
