According to leading French website JeuxFrance.com, Nintendo France is looking to reduce the price of the Wii in that territory. This has sparked rumours that a European price cut in on the way, which of course would logically lead to a global reduction in the price of the console.

The current pack retails for 249 Euros in France. The new ‘Sports’ pack (which is essentially what is available at the moment) would cost 149 Euros, with a new Mario Kart Wii bundle being released for 199 Euros. A third bundle is also thought to be planned which will include two controllers and two games, but the price is not yet known. The site also claims that new console colours will be coming soon.

It’s hard to know what to make of all this; JeuxFrance.com claims that the source that provided this information is ‘close to Nintendo’, but we’d be surprised if France got a price cut before the rest of the world. Also, the Wii is still selling like hotcakes, so a price cut isn’t really needed – although it’s worth noting that the machine is no longer the cheapest next-gen hardware on the market, with the Xbox 360 Arcade pack retailing for £159.99 in the UK compared to the £179.99 of the Wii.

There has been no official word from Nintendo about these rumours as yet.
