Dr Kawashima "Turned Down Brain Training Royalties"

Posted by Damien McFerran

And he doesn't feel stupid about it, amazingly

His name adorns one of the best selling games of 2007, but Dr Ryuta Kawashima hasn’t seen a single penny of profits.

Nintendo’s Brain Training range has sold millions worldwide and bagged the resurgent company healthy profits, but the Doctor who came up with the ideas on which Brain Training is essentially based has revealed that he turned down to opportunity to make cash off the back of the franchise.

Not a single yen has gone in my pocket. Everyone in my family is mad at me but I tell them that if they want money, go out and earn it.

To be perfecly honest, if we were one of Kawaskima’s blood relatives we’d be pretty fuming, too. Still, his views on videogaming in general may have something to do with this unusal move:

What is scary about games is that you can kill as many hours as you want. I don't think playing games is bad in itself but it makes children unable to do what they should do such as study and communication with the family.
