The game which seems to be available for PC and Linux has also been published with its entire source code available for download. The creators claim that the game is in tribute to the great giant N in the sky, Nintendo.

"Super Mario War is a Super Mario multiplayer game. The goal is to stomp as many other Marios as possible to win the game. It's a tribute to Nintendo and the game Mario War by Samuele Poletto.

The game uses artwork and sounds from Nintendo games. We hope that this non-commercial fangame qualifies as fair use work. We just wanted to create this game to show how much we adore Nintendo's characters and games."

The game boasts upto 4 player action, CPU players and comes complete with a level editor, according to the website over 400 maps have already been created for the game.

We're not sure how Nintendo feels about such games, but it's still pretty impressive. Maybe Nintendo should let these guys develop Super Mario War as "New Content" for Wii's Virtual Console system... Viva la Fanboys!
