Games Critics Awards Are In

A week ago we brought you news about the nominations for the Games Critics Awards for best of the show at E3. Well now the results are in and we can see how well Nintendo did.

Without further waiting, here are the winners:

Best of Show:
Wii (Nintendo)

Best Original Game:
Spore (Maxis/Electronic Arts for PC)

Best Hardware/Peripheral:
Wii (Nintendo)

Best Console Game:
Gears of War (Epic Games / Microsoft Games Studio for Xbox 360)

Best Handheld Game:
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo for Nintendo DS)

Best Action Game:
Gears of War (Epic Games / Microsoft Games Studio for Xbox 360)

Best Action/Adventure Game:
Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft Montreal / UbiSoft for PlayStation 3)

Best Role Playing Game:
Mass Effect (Bioware / Microsoft Games Studio for Xbox 360)

Best Racing Game:
Excite Truck (Monster Games / Nintendo for Wii)

Best Simulation Game:
Spore (Maxis/Electronic Arts for PC)

Best Sports Game:
Wii Sports (Nintendo for Wii)

Best Fighting Game:
Heavenly Sword (Ninja Theory / Sony for PlayStation 3)

Best Strategy Game:
Supreme Commander

Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor Game:
Guitar Hero 2 (Harmonix / Red Octane for PlayStation 2)

Well Nintendo sure did make a good impression! They bested both Sony and Microsoft for best of the show and Wii won the award for the best hardware.

It seems that the most innovative titles stole the show this year, with Nintendo's Excite Truck, Wii Sports and Phantom Hourglass all big winners. It goes to show how going against the flow is a good thing.

Wii winning Best of Show over PS3 and 360 is actually pretty impressive, shows that not everyone in the industry cares about gigaflops ;)
