Today marks the release of the reformed Nintendo DS dubbed DS Lite. Taking on its smaller form and Apple like good looks its unsurprising that the Japanese Nintendo faithful were out in force as the new unit sells out within hours of going on sale.

Nintendo originally expected to have 500,000 units available in the first two weeks of launch and over 1,000,000 by the end of the month. We suspect the earlier reported production issues will of significantly reduced these figures, but it seems they didn't put a dampener on the demand. It also seems that these production issues of the coloured DS' didn't make an impact on the sales. The two coloured versions are expected to be available from March 11th.

We're looking forward to getting our hands on the fresh design later in the year. In the mean time we'll try and hear from those fortunate enough to sneak one out of Japan.
