Persona 5 Strikers, otherwise known as Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers in Japan, finally blasts its way onto Switch consoles in the west and, if you were expecting this Atlus/Koei Tecmo crossover to be a straight-up Musou style spin-off, a Dynasty Warriors-esque effort with a fancy Persona skin hastily slapped on top, you're in for a bit of surprise. What we've actually got here is a slick and exciting action RPG that manages to keep plenty of the Persona series' signature conversations, characters and camaraderie intact while fusing it successfully with hack-and-slash combat that's a little more strategic and varied than we expected it would be.
Persona 5 Strikers is a direct sequel to the events that transpired in Persona 5 – although not those that occur in Persona 5 Royal, which it rather annoyingly chooses to fully ignore – that opens with Joker and Morgana on a return trip to Tokyo where they aim to catch up with the rest of the Phantom Thieves on a summer camping trip which the whole gang are thoroughly looking forward to. Of course, just as they go about laying out their vacation plans, our heroes are dragged into yet another life or death battle in the Metaverse, this time involving a popular new phone app, EMMA, that's somehow being used by a bunch of high-profile public figures in order to steal the desires of hapless citizens, imprisoning them in enemy-infested jails – this game's version of P5's palaces – which the thieves must now battle their way through in order to save the day.
Fans of the Persona series will likely feel much more at home here than they may have initially expected as, after the game's action-packed opening engagement in a shadow jail presided over by a power-mad fashion idol, the gang immediately get together at good old Café Leblanc where they mull over their options, formulate plans and indulge in the rather long-winded back-and-forths for which the series is well known. There really is far more in the way of character development and story squeezed in here than we imagined there would be, with the entire crew getting plenty of opportunities to shine in a well-written campaign that makes this spin-off feel not too far removed from a proper, fully-fledged entry in the franchise.
Of course, with developer Omega Force involved, once our heroes hit the Metaverse in order to take on the bosses of each of the jails they need to shut down as they campervan their way across Japan, Persona 5 Strikers reveals a combat style that feels radically different to the methodical turn-based action of its predecessors. However, as it turns out, the action on offer here isn't quite the mindless hack-and-slash affair you may have been expecting. Although there's certainly still plenty of Musou-style carnage on display in how you deal with the larger groups of cannon-fodder enemies you'll encounter, it's all given a nice little strategic lift by how it chooses to incorporate the series' sneaky thief tactics and Personas into the fray.
Whilst delving into the game's dungeons, your four chosen party members will engage in combat by coming into contact with foes in a number of ways. Being spotted by an enemy as you make your way through a jail here will see them engage your group first, giving them the upper-hand at the outset of a skirmish and enabling them to dish out some unavoidable damage to kickstart proceedings. However, by carefully approaching an enemy from behind – or by making use of special hiding spots such as lampposts or corners – you gain the opportunity to perform an ambush attack, getting the drop on foes and even taking out entire mobs without them having an opening to retaliate as a result.
Once actually engaged in combat proper, you'll employ the expected quick combos of light and heavy attacks as well as a dodge manoeuvre in order to dash through and around huge throngs of rank and file enemies, dishing out punishment that sees you slowly charge up a screen-shaking Showtime attack in return for your efforts. Holding in L allows you to use ranged gun attacks to give yourself space and X sees your currently selected character (you can switch between all four of your chosen party members as and when you please) pull off their own unique special skill. Of course, Personas also play a huge part in battles here, and by holding in the R button you'll freeze time and open up a menu highlighting your selected character's currently active Persona and the moves it has at its disposal. This opens up lots of tactical choices, giving you the ability to impair mobs with area-of-effect damage, heal teammates and cause all manner of elemental pain to the shadow fiends that surround you.
As expected, Joker is the only character in the game who can cycle between multiple Personas at any point in combat and, when combined with the Personas of the rest of your party members, this gives you a wealth of attacks to employ at any given time. These Persona powers really come into their own when you face off against any one of the stronger named enemies, mini-bosses or final boss encounters in a jail as every one of these larger foes is susceptible to a certain elemental attack type, as indicated on-screen as you battle them. This means you need to think about which character in your squad you choose to attack with first, hitting bosses with the right elemental damage to weaken them and leaving them exposed to follow-up attacks from the rest of your team. It's all suitably slick, flashy and fast-paced stuff that's further enhanced by the Phantom Thieves' ability to zip around the screen to specially marked points, such as lampposts or the tops of cars, in order to perform special spinning drop attacks or even flip off a vehicle before detonating it to take out all nearby mobs.
Of course, Persona attacks can't be used endlessly as they are tied to an SP meter that drains pretty quickly as you perform moves and, as a result, some early boss encounters – even on normal difficulty – can prove to be quite frustrating affairs as your team quickly runs out of SP. This is a problem that's knocked on the head in short order, however, as a few jails in, you'll learn how to cook and make items that restore SP and health, mitigating the need to save up yen to buy them in shops and enabling you to wail on enemies safe in the knowledge you've got a good supply of SP items tucked away in your inventory. Indeed, where early boss face-offs can be quite tense affairs that often require some trial and error to conquer, we found that later in the game our team were capable of cutting through most big battles without nearly as many problems.
With regards to the creation and upgrading of your various Personas, you'll nip off to the Velvet Room from the menu in the downtime between battles or through portals located in dungeons in order to spend Persona points (PP) on levelling-up and unlocking new types by combining those you already own. It's a much more streamlined and simplified take on proceedings than that found in main entries in the franchise but it also, unfortunately, raises the spectre of grinding, something you'll definitely have to do in this game in order to raise both PP and yen in order to afford fancy new weapons, protective gear, elemental rings and, of course, powerful and expensive late-game Persona types. We actually found ourselves grinding quite early on in Persona 5 Strikers – farming areas of jails which you can easily jump in and out of at checkpoints – in order to buy some new sword or gain enough PP to rank up our most useful Persona, and it's a shame that the game's various currencies weren't balanced in such a way that this re-treading of old ground could have been avoided entirely.
Further to the monotony of grinding here and there, we also felt as though the game's campaign could really have come to a close a little earlier than it did. There are perhaps a few too many jails here and, with each new one taking a good few hours to get through; the last couple did start to make the experience feel as though it was beginning to drag somewhat. We also took issue with the game's camera at points during battles, as it often became quite difficult to get a good handle on the situation when the screen really filled up with hordes of enemies. You can lock on to your main target with a quick press of the R3 button but still, when things really heat up, it can be a bit of a mess to find your bearings amidst all of the special effects and elemental explosions going off.
However, these relatively small problems really do feel less significant when held up against everything that this game manages to get right. This is a tricky balance of a thing to pull off, satisfying fans of the RPG series proper whilst giving those who are expecting an action-packed hack and slash Musou affair something to sink their teeth into at the same time but, for the most part, Persona 5 Strikers succeeds. There's a properly meaty story at the heart of proceedings here full of entertainingly screwball bosses to face off against, lots of well-written conversations between the Phantom Thieves that will delight fans of the franchise and even a couple of excellent new characters – most notably kick-ass AI Sophie and confused cop Hasegawa Zenkichi – to get to know as the narrative unfolds.
The action too, although it can be repetitive and we did find ourselves annoyed at the camera here and there when things got hectic, is slick and highly polished. Pulling off explosive special moves, zipping around the battlefield to launch into spins from perch points and blasting bosses with the combined powers of your Personas really does feel great here. There's a nice balance between cutting through huge swathes of mindless enemies in that almost therapeutic Musou style and employing clever tactics to get the upper hand against more troublesome foes, and this is all bolstered by unlockable master skills, team bonding buffs and characters who each have their own unique moves and skillsets to employ.
All of the action and drama here is also presented on Switch in a port that performs spectacularly well overall. This is a very good-looking game and, besides a pretty obvious lack of anti-aliasing, it's one that never stuttered or bugged out once during the fifty or so hours it took us to complete its main campaign. In both docked and handheld modes – when the camera is behaving itself – the action is clear and easy to read, cutscenes look excellent and the series' signature stylish menus swish on and off the screen satisfyingly as you flick around through your items, Personas and equipment.
Persona 5 Strikers isn't without its problems, then. You'll find yourself grinding here and there for yen and PP, the ability to make your own SP items can trivialise some later boss battles, the camera can be a pain at times during ferocious battles and the campaign puts you through a few too many dungeons in the end but, overall, this is a highly ambitious and successful spin-off entry in the series. With a strong story, some slick and flashy action, a handful of great new characters to get to know and all of your favourite thieves present, correct and sharing plenty of screen time together, Persona 5 Strikers is an easy recommendation for fans of the franchise, and action RPGs in general, that arrives on Switch in fine form. Can we have a Persona 5 Royal port now, please?
Conclusion
Persona 5 Strikers is a slick and stylish spin-off that manages to successfully combine a surprisingly strong story with some satisfying Musou-inspired hack-and-slash action. There are a few issues here and there, with some necessary grinding at points, slight difficulty imbalances and a camera that can be a bit of a pain during busy battles but, overall, this is a thoroughly entertaining action RPG that comes highly recommended.

Persona 5 on Switch at long last...oh, wait. ;p
8/10? I never saw that coming
Nice! I'll definitely get it once P5 is on Switch.
Still torn as whether to get this on Switch or PC. Switch is perfect for Persona, but the lack of antialiasing is a bit of a bummer and I'm stuck at home anyway, so...
Tbh, I'll probably end up double-dipping anyway so may not be that important a choice in the end!
Exciting! I've got this game pre-ordered for Switch, I have P5 on PS4 (which I loved), and recently completed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, so I'm really looking forward to playing this game. Now we just need some of the main series games on Switch please!
@christofilth By main series do you mean Shin Megami Tensei V, that Switch exclusive? Because this is a spin off of a spin off 😉
Nice. It's not p5r but i will tale what i can get
There's only one persona 5 game I want and they just won't give it to us...
I have been very eagerly waiting to play this. I think I have said before that I was more excited for this than I was for Age of Calamity!
@timleon It honestly still looks cracking even with a few jaggies!
The past week or so I've been busily playing through P5 on my PS3 in preparation for this Strikers game.
I'm enjoying P5 overall, very slowly changing the hearts of targets and collecting new Personas, but I would much rather play the game on my Switch, were that possible.
I'm actually happy to hear it directly follows the original P5 and not P5 Royal, as I do not own a PS4 and do not intend to get the Royal game.
I haven't read much of the review above for fear of spoilers, but I'm confident I'll enjoy playing through Strikers - I tend to like action RPGs more than turn-based ones.
Surprised the load times on Switch weren't brought up as a con honestly
They're like Wrath of Cortex on PS2 levels of bad. It takes like a full minute to get to the title screen from the Switch Home Menu, and like 45 seconds to transition from the real world to the Metaverse or entering and exiting the Velvet Room
Why do I always see the Nintendo community basically begging for Persona 5, yet they have mainline Shin Megami Tensi games as a exclusives, don't see PlayStation or Xbox fans who have neither go on about it.
@masofdas There are people who have begged for stuff like Shin Megami Tensei V on PS4 or for Sony to flat out buy Atlus but it's more them mocking how bitter and desperate the Nintendo people are for Persona ports if anything
This whole BreakFreePersona thing is just stupid if you ask me. It won't accomplish anything in the long term
I just don’t get Atlas’ approach to Which platform gets which Megaten/Persona. SMT on Switch, P5 on PS4, P4 on PC, PQ on 3DS- surely they should just choose 1 ecosystem to focus on, or better yet, make everything multi platform!
@nessisonett I didn't mean SMT as we already have some of that on the way, but really looking forward to playing those games when they eventually arrived. I've only played SMT IV but I really enjoyed it so looking forward to more!
@masofdas Probably because Persona is much closer to being a mainstream series, SMT is more niche.
@Munchlax Basically
SMT on Nintendo
Persona on PlayStation & PC
This is just how Atlus is. There doesn't seem to be a strong demand for Persona going multiplatform from the Japanese audience anyway. Most of the "portbegging" going around is purely from English speakers i.e. the Western Nintendo community if anything so Atlus JP just doesn't bat an eye in that direction
The only way I can see Persona coming to Nintendo is just if they start selling badly on PlayStation, because despite all this constant demand for these Switch ports or whatever, that doesn't really translate to sales considering P5 is Atlus' best selling game in their entire history as a company and that's only on PS3/PS4 including Royal. Same thing with P4G on PC. In the meantime stuff like Catherine Full Body on Switch kinda flew under the radar despite instantly outselling the Vita version in Japan and the PS4 version of Strikers sold considerably better than it did on Switch
So yeah just my two cents. Honestly I doubt half these people begging for this game right now would even play it if it did come to Switch and they're just seeking validation for Joker being in Smash Bros. PlayStation as the platform of choice worked for giving these games more exposure and as a result more people know of Persona than they do SMT, so it has paid off for Atlus, which means I think they're just comfortable with the way things are now
@doctorhino Actually no. The Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha games which came out in the mid-2000s for the PS2 are actually the first action RPGs in MegaTen. This is just Persona's first action RPG but it's not a genre they haven't explored before. Even P5's battle system has inklings of real time elements
Sounds awesome! I'm super excited to play it.
Tbh, the aliasing in the Switch demo was a little distracting and made screenshots less than ideal, but I'd rather have that freedom from the TV, and I also want to support more Atlus games coming to the system.
@TheFrenchiestFry I'm getting that with TW3 port on Switch atm. Playing Blood and Wine, and the load times are like launch day Bloodborne every time I die, lol.
But long load times don't matter that much if you're not seeing them a lot.
@TheFrenchiestFry Or Persona Q and Q2, exclusively on 3DS, and both great games. It's a weird situation, but hey, I'm hoping the series will come to Switch. Japanese market or not, there is quite some interest in it, it should be able to run smoothly, and it's already been translated and everything, so... Well, we can hope.
Anyway, still need to start on Age of Calamity. And still plenty of other games to play. But this one doesn't seem like it will be something easily dismissed as a "bad game", so it made the actual wishlist.
@Ralizah I guess the lack of the super intrusive ones does soften the blow a bit but personally I found them pretty pace breaking just due to their sheer length. Apparently they aren't even that much better on PS4 unless you're playing on PS5 through back-compat
But hey thank YHVH there's a Steam version since now I don't have to deal with that
@Shambo Actually PQ and Q2 did happen because of Japanese demand for a Persona game on the 3DS so that's another major example of how prioritized they are compared to the Western audience
SMT V getting a worldwide release sounds like they might be re-evaluating their stances on that stuff but I bet part of that is happening because Nintendo injected some money and manpower to ensure it got that treatment since that didn't even happen with Persona 5
How come Nintendo life got such late news about this? But l still don't care what they say, l still see it as a spinoff. I liked how P5 ended and it stops right there. Just like how P3 ends and stops right there.
Anyways l won't play this game and l'm just going to keep waiting for a real real Persona game like 6. Wonder how long that will take, but idc if it will take years. I'm always ready hehe
"Much More Than Your Average Musou Spin-Off"
Played the japanese one when it came out, and this is the most common mistake people make when they see this game.
"Another musou"
The point is that this game is by far not a regular musou, Age of Calamity is more a regular musou than Persona 5 Strikers is, yes P5S shares some of the musou aspects but where Age of Calamity IS a musou, this is mostly not.
Fun game, but I bought the english version on PC this time because 30fps is not enough for this on Switch.
@masofdas
SMT is not Nintendo exclusive though as SMT3 Nocturne clearly shows. Even the HD release is multiplat on both Sony and Nintendo platforms. So a port of P5 or Royal isn’t that far of a stretch. The demand is strong so Atlus are just poor business decision makers if it doesn’t happen.
@Mr_Persona Well today was when the review embargo lifted on this game. Reviewers have had this game in their hands for about a whole month and now they're actually allowed to talk in depth about it
Also honestly I understand where you're coming from but it's also really not that big of a deal. It may be a side game but games like Arena and Strikers are actually pretty lovingly crafted with actual respect towards the source material. Their stories aren't the greatest thing in the world and they don't reach the emotional highs of the numbered entries, but they're still great games and if you take them out of the equation you'll be waiting a long ass time for new main entries
@GameOtaku Nocturne was literally the only time a main SMT game debuted on a non-Nintendo system excluding the Japanese exclusive NINE on the Xbox
Now that Nocturne's on Switch every main SMT game has been on a Nintendo console at some point. All Sony gets by comparison these days is basically Persona, Catherine and nothing else. You won't find things like SMT IV, or Etrian Odyssey, or Trauma Center, or literally anything that isn't Persona from Atlus on PlayStation unless it's a Vanillaware game like 13 Sentinels or Dragon's Crown
At this point SMT is to Nintendo what Final Fantasy used to be. It's basically like a second party franchise
And also the demand is only really strong from English speakers. Not the audience Atlus actually cares to listen to lol. It's like a one sided relationship with your girlfriend basically
@GameOtaku I think, if anything, your argument from SMT III HD being multiplat would make a stronger case for ports of older Persona games to Switch.
I actually do think we'll end up seeing an older mainline game on Switch before Nintendo replaces it. But I think the newer games are going to remain Sony exclusive.
@TheFrenchiestFry SSDs are going to make it harder and harder to go back to playing on older systems. I have a cheap one in my PC, and it's lightning fast when loading games compared to any console I own.
So...is there no post-game content at all?! Because that'd be a first for the Warriors series. :/
@masofdas It’s because Joker got put in Smash even though Atlus does NOT deserve it after still refusing to put the game he’s in on Switch.
@Ralizah PC gaming has basically spoiled me at this point
I'll always love my PS4 and Switch for their exclusives but 9 times out of 10 all my multiplats are played through Steam unless PC just isn't an option like with Kingdom Hearts. SSDs have basically altered my patience in waiting for games to load and I bet the PS5 will be no exception
@TheFrenchiestFry I just can't take it anymore with P5 characters and their story because of how much they've been focusing on them. I think P5R was enough but they do another 1 again. One of the reasons I don't have Ren as my avatar anymore on any accounts. Its also hard to avoid the fandom about P5 games because l keep getting news and my friends only know P5 and nothing else. My brain just been melting. But somehow l've been staying excited for P6!
@gloom like how Square Enix didn't deserve to put Cloud in Smash Wii U?
like how Konami shouldn't have made their literal first third party character rep in Smash Snake from the predominantly PlayStation-based Metal Gear series, of which had a PS3-exclusive entry on the way by the time he got in that they blatantly advertised in Brawl?
As someone who's been playing the PC version, I can confirm it runs very smoothly if anyone was considering it there. I wouldn't be able to offer a direct Switch comparison though. In terms of story content and wider gameplay elements however, this review is spot on the money for me
Not buying until we get the actual P5 comes out on Switch. And I do not remotely agree that it's a proper sequel. It's not a JRPG. It's a spinoff. And maybe it's a good spinoff, with an actual story, but it's not a proper Persona game. And that's what I want on Switch.
And if this doesn't sell as well as they hope and they say some crap about Nintendo fans not wanting Persona games, I am gonna be livid! We don't want a Persona spinoff Musou crap, we want the full meat JRPG experience!
@the_beaver This game may be a sales test for the franchise. I wouldn't be surprised if Atlus waits to see how the dust settles on this game. If you want P5, perhaps consider supporting this? Who knows..
I only hope this sells well on Switch. It may be our only chance of getting the original P5 on the console...
@Ralizah
There is no exclusivity my friend. Atlus has said themselves they are wanting to port more games to more systems after the success of P4G on PC. The switch is selling like crazy outselling PS4 last year and is continuing to sell just as well. A port to switch would be a guaranteed money printing machine. I’d even be satisfied with vanilla P5 being ported since Catherine was ported using the same engine it would run flawlessly.
@Heavyarms55 hahaha Demi-fiend go Gaea Rage
@TheFrenchiestFry 100% on board with those statements. I think Cloud should have been introduced into Smash in Ultimate as a new fighter, with Sephiroth still going as the shocking dlc reveal. All this only because FF7 and others have been put on switch.
@gloom look at snake. he only had 4 games. And no newest ones in awhile. And there is a lot of metal gear solid games, but only 4 on Nintendo consoles. So anyways that's a normal thing to happen. Who knows there could be some games l missed that are on a Nintendo console. Have a nice day
@daisygurl I would rather to do it another way if l was you. Trust me you're missing out of a lot good music from P5 and P3. And this scramble game are going to have remix and l don't know if they sound all good or better than the original.
@GameOtaku We don't even know the full extent of what they mean by porting games to new platforms.
For all we know they could mean putting the rest of Persona on PC while Nintendo continues to get SMT stuff like ports of the other PS2 games
We know for a fact SEGA has an extreme bias towards PC given they've put a lot of their biggest franchises on Steam over actual console platforms so who's to say they won't do the same with Persona, especially since it's probable both PS4 and PC will outsell Switch when it comes to Strikers since one platform has Persona 5 while the other at least has a main Persona game which means there's already an audience for the games on there
P5S and how well it does on Switch is basically going to determine whether they actually go forward with Persona stuff on that console going forward outside just more spinoffs like Arena and maybe Dancing
@Nintendofan83 It's a sequel. I want to play the original without spoilers about the end lol. Without having played the original, no way I'm getting this. The test should be the other way around, you know... XD
@Kalmaro
I'm technically a shin meg ten fan, but nothing bo there me more than when a company creates a side game for Nintendo instead of the original, telling us its just as good. Then waits to see if we'll bite at the not main game before deciding to possibly port the main.
@daisygurl that was always in my head back then when l wasn't tired of P5, but now its P3 battle music xD I don't even know how that got stuck in my head, haven't played P3 in ages. But l also keep hearing P4 too...maybe my brain likes them better than P5 music..idk
@Monado_Dude hmm l don't know they might take a big step for next gen
@Monado_Dude They actually explored having P5 adopt a real time action system in early concepts during pre-production but feared it would alienate too many of the series' core fans
The plot also originally focused on a backpacking trip around the world before the Tohoku earthquake convinced Hashino that the game should be refocused on Japan and Japanese culture
In a way P5S is basically what Persona 5 was originally conceived as but fully realized
@TheFrenchiestFry
Strikers should not be the acid test for a port of 5 to switch. Strikers is a sequel to 5. A direct sequel so if you haven’t played 5 odds are you’re not going to be buying and playing Strikers. The surveys they sent out have shown the demand. The breakfreepersona movement shows the demand. The constant barrage of asking for a port show demand! With a Atlus rep saying to keep asking for it shows there are those in the company who see the writing on the wall and see a Royally Golden opportunity.
The world doesn’t encompass just Japan.
@TheFrenchiestFry it might be just because I don't see it compared to with Nintendo
@gloom he's in Q2 but personally think he's in tad like Cloud because of the popularity of P5, while it should be Jack Frost
@PJOReilly I want to get this for my Switch Lite rather than PS4 because I think playing in handheld will be perfect for the dialogue heavy segments.
Will the smaller screen size of the Lite be fine for the battles though?
@GameOtaku SMT V is and the 4's on 3DS. You've sort showing my point if I play 3HD on PS4, why aren't I getting SMTV on PS4/5?
@TheFrenciestFry
But then why have Persona spinoffs on Switch? If Persona is a PlayStation and PC series, why not have P5 on PC, and no P4 on current gen PS hardware? Their splitting the series between platforms way more than needed, and honestly, SMT and Persona don’t need to be exclusives at all.
@masofdas
Yes yes yes I agree whole heartedly. It should’ve been an SMT character or the mascot Jack Frost instead of a persona character since the history of smt is tied more to Nintendo and honestly the P5 switch port thing would never got off the ground if it wasn’t for jokers inclusion.
@GameOtaku I'm gonna be straight with you right now. BreakFreePersona is literally not going to do anything long term
Atlus West PR probably doesn't take the time to singe through their social media tweets and count out how many Switch-only folk are tagging them in their posts, posting fanmade box art or spam posting to get their attention. This "movement" has basically turned into an in joke for the Persona and SMT community with how abruptly the Nintendo folk just barged in acting like they were entitled to a port that never existed
Atlus Japan especially doesn't give one crap about all of y'all on Twitter constantly using that hashtag in posts that aren't even related to Persona. This is on top of some of y'all raiding consumer surveys intended for just Japanese speakers because you were that adamant on voicing your desire for a freaking Switch port when the actual demand for it never translated to P5R selling any worse than P5 already did as a PlayStation exclusive, or Catherine Full Body selling only modestly on Switch next ot PS4, or Strikers on PS4 easily outselling the Switch version
You wanna get into Atlus and show you're a true fan? Buy SMT III and SMT V when they come out if you only have a Switch. Wanna play Persona stuff? Get P4G on Steam, or save up and get a PS4 or PS5 to play the buttload of Persona games on there. Things aren't just handed to you because you made a ***** hashtag
@masofdas
It could happen. Both series should be multiplat rather than dividing the fan base.
Probably end up getting this on PS4.
@TheFrenchiestFry
They are a business and business operate on the acquisition of money. A port would equal money. Money which Sega needs badly after such poor earnings reported recently. Persona fans seem to think they are far superior to the SMT crowd and die hard Sony fan boys/girls that can’t stand their precious games being on anything else. Whenever I bring up smt 3 bring exclusive to PS2 their response is always that was ages ago. Well my friend lightning can in fact strike twice. And if it happened for smt then it’s also fair to think the same could happen for persona.
@Kiwi_Unlimited So there holding the game for ransom then. Nice.
@Munchlax Persona has actually been on PC before, it's just that P4G is the first one that got a worldwide launch. PC isn't a console like Xbox or Nintendo so they're definitely the go to platform for developers branching out of exclusivity with a particular franchise given that's what happened with series like Yakuza and Nioh. They came to PC first before other consoles, and it paid off for them as well
SEGA just has more of a bias towards the PC market this gen than they do consoles outside maybe PlayStation since that's where they put a lot of their new and legacy content. Hell P5S coming to PC is probably a last minute thing because of how well Golden did on PC and that's why it took longer to localize. There's even datamined evidence of the Nocturne remaster on PC as well that will probably come out when the game launches in English.
@Munchlax SMT is the main series even though Persona has over took it in popularity but that could be a lot been on 3DS or what not
@GameOtaku And it did strike twice for Persona. Why do you think Strikers is on PC in the first place? That was definitely something they only actively went into developing after Golden basically helped them all throughout the summer in the midst of them selling off their pachinko and arcade businesses to keep themselves financially afloat. SMT Nocturne is also coming to PC as well based on datamines so yeah, I'm pretty sure they got the hint
You want to financially support them? Don't bother waiting on a port as mythical as the unicorn. SMT V is literally their big game this year and it's a Switch exclusive. Why don't you buy that first, make it succeed and blow it up to the same level P5 did on PS3 and PS4, and then we can talk about Persona, because I guarantee you your hashtags are as effective as a Zio skill on Odin
@GameOtaku agree, just see it as SMT is Nintendo with odd few elsewhere and Persona PlayStation with odd few elsewhere
Why I've got all three systems that thing's like that isn't a issue
Musou games are all about grinding. That's not really a con but you could say it's something about the genre the reviewer hated. It's not specific to this musou game.
The gets less challenging once you can make your own healing and SP items.
Well duh? I never guessed that is a thing. If you don't want this, then don't make the items. That simple. Calling that a con is just silly.
Is the camera really that bad? Hard to know till I play the game but most who played the JP port didn't find that to be an issue.
Not sure the reviewer knows what a musou game even is.
That aside, this is a pretty good review. It sounds like someone who does not know what musou is and had not played Persona 5 and was told "this review is your job to write". They did a good job considering their limited knowledge of the subject matter.
@nimnio
Yes. I read all of the review content (for the reviews I read) and then the pros/cons to see if they match up with the body of the review.
I don't take much notice of the score because most of the time it's just an arbitary number that doesn't at all relate to the content in the review. This is an industry wide issue though.
@timleon I had the same dilemma over switch version or PS4. I even had it preordered at switch. But it seems from
Youtube videos that the switch version load times are atrocious. 30 seconds to get out of the velvet room vs. 6 on ps4. That kill it for me. Ended up canceling the preorder and pre ordering the ps4 one.
Musou crossovers have been getting better ever since OG Hyrule Warriors and I've been having a blast with all of them. I'm was already getting this one even if it was "yet another Musou with a skin"
@TheFrenchiestFry
I am buying SMT5 when it comes out. I’m also buying the SMT3HD when it comes stateside. I would also buy Persona 5......on the switch. I’m not going to own multiple consoles. Atlus was quite clear they were going to look into porting more games to PC and other platforms. Switch is a other platform and it’s selling hand over first. This division of the fandoms has got to stop. Sony doesn’t own the persona brand and Nintendo doesn’t own smt.
@nimnio
Also I never said it's a 10/10 game. That's your words not mine.
I'm just going off the whole review and my experiences with multiple musou games which I have played in the past.
I'm not a fan of arbitary scure numbers anyway. Bowever is the game good? it should be but I'll know more after I play it. I just spoke up regarding the reviwer's lack of knowledge of the subject matter that's all.
The review is pretty good as I said above considering the reviewer doesn't know much about musou games or Persona. I say this because any knowledge they might have is not at all shown in the review. One would assume if they had the knowledge it'd be in the review.
@AlienigenX
Patience is a virtue many lack these days.
I loved screwball scramble as a kid xxx
@Kalvort I played mostly in handheld and it works really well, easy to read and follow the action. There is the slight camera issue I mentioned but it's no worse in portable than docked!
@nimnio
Lame in your opinion.
We should be holding reviews to account. I guess it's just mny wishful thinking that holding reviews to account means the reviewers will take note and actually imprive the quality of their future reviews.
Very wishful thinking sadly. I reckon at most these comments will be ignored and the future reviews will not be improved.
For context - I'm here commenting because the standard of reviews on NL is beter than most. They have a long way to go before they are very good, but they are so much better than the garbage other sides put up and try to call a review.
I just want NL to improve their reviews from kinda good to really good. That's all.
Focus on a quality review, not a rushed first to release review.
@PJOReilly Thank you! Switch version it is
@Kalvort Enjoy!
Gawtdamnit! I need to get to finishing P5. Two weeks left.
For those who know they want this but haven't commited yet (and are in the US), Best Buy has a very pretty steelbook for preorders of the game. BB is the only place I've seen the steelbook confirmed.
@the8thark
Unless it’s a fanservicey game in which case it’s automatically guaranteed less than 5 because of prudes.
@GameOtaku Well if you're not buying a PlayStation for that questionable reason all you'll have to do is potentially miss out on some good ass games
P5 will probably come to PC, but I sincerely doubt Switch is going to be in the cards for Persona potentially ever with how much Sony loves championing it as their JRPG golden goose these days saying stuff like "it's a platform holder for our brand"
Shame too. P5R is a great game and it's ultimately your stubborness keeping you from playing it. This just goes to show the inherent advantage you gain from owning multiple consoles instead of just limiting yourself to a single one because then you beg for games that possibly never show up at all
@TheFrenchiestFry That does seem to make sense... But it did get translated, and porting is just a way of "translating" for another platform, so nothing is impossible, and as you pointed out, demand is an important factor. I think P5 (or 4, but I'd prefer 5 especially since P5S gets a Switch release) on Switch would be welcomed with open arms.
Anyway, speculating, hoping, opinions, all that... Voicing the wish might help, it might not. No one loses personally, but this game's publishers lose by skipping what would seem like an easy port to a very popular system, and its (potential) fans lose by not having it available. Maybe Sony wins, maybe that is indeed part of the point.
@TheFrenchiestFry
They could instead champion their own first party RPGs like Legend of Dragoon and Wild Arms instead. I see no problem with Persona and SMT being multiplat or timed exclusives. I just want to play third party games on my console that I own and not run out to buy a console that is never going to be used to its fullest because of lack of internet.
I'm not buying P5 Strikers because I find it really difficult to care about it since Persona 5 isn't on Switch or PC.
The pain is a little easier now that we know Shin Megami Tensei V is coming to Switch.
so excited to get this!!
@Shambo Well considering the Steam version is getting released worldwide alongside the Western launch they had to take into consideration, Koei Tecmo/Atlus porting the game to PC in addition to sending that version to the West branch for translation while stuff was coming together like the voice acting sessions which were done remotely and translating all the text
Apparently voice work for P5S in English didn't start in earnest until like February according to Erika Harlacher (Ann's VA) so they had to do that while the team in Japan was developing the PC version in tandem with the Western branch of Atlus localizing the PS4 and Switch versions alongside the PC port
This seems like one for the fans... Musou games have a very repetitive gameplay loop, which you either like or find tedious. Tbh a proper RPG persona game would have more longevity and be more interesting for those who don't like musou games.
@GameOtaku I mean if you're only eyeing a PS4 for stuff like Persona those aren't really games that require an internet connection. This even applies to the vast majority of Sony's own first party stuff
They're pure single player and have online that is only optional and not required for the experience unless there is actually a multiplayer component. Plus Switch isn't really that different in that regard. At its core it functions like a standard home console all the same so it's really not too different from the PS4 in that regard. Even physical media is basically just manually installed onto the console in the same fashion
@TheFrenchiestFry
Updates and the like. Last gen I had both vita and 3ds could update both and play anywhere. This constant splitting of fan bases has got to stop. KH has games spanning 2 systems and got rereleased on Sony but so far Nintendo has only gotten the side story sequels and not any main games although Sony through the collections has access to the complete story. The demand for Persona/SMT on other platforms is there they just need to provide the goods. Catherine used the same engine as P5 so we know without a doubt the game will work. I can buy a $60 game on switch without spending $300 plus for another console and game. I hardly have time to play my switch let alone adding another console to the list.
Well well well... an 8/10; same score as Gavin Lane 's review of Age of Calamity.
Despite not being considered a Warriors/Musou game by the developers, I believe this is an ultimate test to what is a more popular game mini-series: Persona 5/Persona 5 Royal and Persona 5 Strikers VS Breath of the Wild and Age of Calamity.
Nice review. Can't wait to play it. Looks like my kinda thang.
Shame the mainstream P5 looks unlikely to ever come to the console, but hey ho.
Still a meh game, why give us this when we couldn't even get the original Persona 5? It's suppose to be a sequel to Persona 5 but we couldn't get the first story? That's just lame. May as well just make this its own game and story instead. Age of Calamity at least connect to Breath of the Wild, this one just feel out of place here without the first Persona 5.
Hey bought royal for the PS4 even though I don't own one so can someone tell me if I have to play the original P5 or royal to get this one because I really wanna play it.
Things I like about P5: time management mechanics, persona fusion, story, style, turn-based battles.
Things P5S has: story, style.
P5S is just too different, and it's in a genre I usually don't like at all. I appreciate that they put decent effort into the story and characters, but it's not a game I want to PLAY. Guess I'll just watch a stream of it somewhere.
Not interested in a Musou-style spin-off of a series that we have yet to see (fully realised) on a Nintendo home console.
Can't wait to get it!
@SMUGSLOTH69 P5S mostly ignores the new Royal content. You only need to have played the vanilla Persona 5, which equates to about the first 9 months in Royal's story to understand what's happening in Strikers
@NoxAeturnus Actually there is Persona fusion to the game's credit. It just works somewhat differently from the numbered games since Personas are now acquired through random drops from defeated enemies as opposed to Shuffle Time or Negotiation
There are elements of time management there, like being able to free roam around the cities and visit various shops for specific items and gear but it doesn't have the same day to day feel. The aspect of stuff like working on side jobs or hanging out with Confidants probably had to be omitted given the game is like half the length of Persona 3-5 themselves. Stuff like taking side jobs to increase your social stats or to get more money probably wouldn't even work with the game's premise since it's basically a road trip story
@Kalmaro Atlus really wants to tease us just like how they teased us for an international release for strikers
@Kiwi_Unlimited Sounds like Kingdom Hearts
@nessisonett It's more specifically a spinoff of a spinoff of a spinoff of a novel adaption.
I’ll probably just get this on Steam to avoid frame rate issues.
“ Gets less challenging once you can make your own healing and SP items” that’s true in the main game too (well it’s an SP restorative).
Would love to see some performance comparisons to the PS5 version, as a not-graphically intense game like this may be something for which I’d choose portability.
All these “why didn’t I get to play this game on this system” questions would be solved by just buying the other system.
@TheFrenchiestFry I've never really owned a PlayStation so I haven't even played the original vanilla P5
the worse genre than musou is just Modern Military Shooter
@SMUGSLOTH69
Welp
Can't help you then
You should probably get onto saving that money and buying a PS4 or PS5 down the line
I'd recommend it anyway because they have pretty killer exclusives
@TheFrenchiestFry
I can’t recommend Sony anymore to anyone since they have become big censors.
There’s way to much suggesting Sony does not have exclusivity and Atlus themselves have said they want to port more games to more platforms and create games with multiplat in mind. It just makes sense to have the fandom grow. Not often do you strike gold with consumers asking for your products on a nearly daily basis. You can really offer no argument at all why it shouldn’t happen.
@GameOtaku The censors thing is frustrating, but for a lot of the big name games it typically doesn't apply. I'm pretty sure the biggest release that suffered from the censorship policies was Devil May Cry 5 on PS4 but I believe that was patched out in the future. Persona 5 in particular has not been altered in any way by Sony's imposing of their policies in the transition from Japan to the West. This also applies to Royal and Strikers as well
And yes I acknowledge there is a demand for the series to go multiplatform but I wouldn't equate "asking on a daily basis" to checking up and monitoring Atlus' social media every day to spam a tired hashtag and come off as insistent and desperate for ports of games that were never promised, especially if the person bringing up the prospect, like the Communications Manager at Atlus West, has literally no power over what does and doesn't happen in the future. This method of "demanding" is just not the move and its resulted in more people voicing how tired they are of the "portbegging". It only changes things for the worst and makes the Nintendo community members that came into the fandom with their entitled attitude look even more childish.
Maybe Atlus will follow on their promise. Maybe Persona 6 will be on everything under the sun when it gets announced, but if it doesn't happen it's really not the end of the world and Atlus aren't really any stupider than they were before since Persona games mostly being on Sony systems has not at all hurt the series' development history or their sales output. The PS4 still has a larger worldwide installbase than the Switch at present and P5 was in like the top 30 best selling games on the platform, in addition to being included in the PS Plus Collection on PS5 for people who missed out the first time. It's safe to say that there really aren't many people left who haven't played it that genuinely want to because most of them, including myself, have.
I'm not against the idea of Persona on Nintendo. The rest of MegaTen already is and what's left on PlayStation is few and far between, but considering SEGA's bias towards the PC market in conjunction with P5 selling incredibly well as strictly a PlayStation game, it's probably still unlikely. The 25th anniversary is coming up soon so they have time to announce things, but I honestly think it's a safer bet Persona ports will basically be completely directed towards Steam like what's happening with Golden, Nocturne and Strikers while Atlus fully commits to actually making sure SMT V gets off the ground since they know they have to sell that to the Switch audience first and foremost. Throwing in a Persona 5 port before SMTV comes out will probably take away all the attention from it considering that's exactly what happened with Catherine on Switch
@TheFrenchiestFry
An Atlus employee has a lot of power. If it was just a janitor with the cleaning service at Atlus saying this it wouldn’t have any pull. But this is a higher up administrative position. They should just pony up and port the game. I don’t really see it cutting in SMT5s turf because the nature of the games while similar is completely different. Is Mario 3d world cutting into the release of crash on switch?
My dealing with Sony fans they are always thinking they are superior and can only come up with its on Sony platforms now and is never going to happen ignoring completely the news articles clearly stating they are looking to bring more games to more platforms. Honestly most of them have a pretty selfish outlook.
@GameOtaku Comparing 3D World to Crash is not as suffficient of a comparison as SMT to Persona. SMT and Persona come from the same developer, are part of the same series and share largely the same mechanics, demons and settings. It's just that one also has social sim mechanics but take those away and it's every bit a MegaTen game, and the audiences overlap beyond them just occupying the same genre given SMT and Persona will permanently be intrinsically linked to one another. Without Shin Megami Tensei, Persona wouldn't even exist.
I still stand on the assumption that Atlus probably isn't considering Persona on Switch at present because SMT is already niche as is next to Persona and given their newfound establishment as a big name RPG developer thanks to Persona, it leaves them a great opportunity to actually push SMT way harder from a marketing perspective and put the same amount of budget and advertisment behind it that they have been doing with stuff like Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, especially given SMT is the main series of games that Persona deviates from in the first place, meaning there are a lot of new people expressing interest in mainline due to their experiences with Persona 5/Royal or even Persona 4 Golden after its Steam port. If they announced something like a P5R port when SMT V already isn't as big of a deal, they basically risk deviating any and all attention from it from the Nintendo audience given SMT is the series exclusive to their platforms, but clearly the less popular one overall
Also Sony elitists are fickle people but honestly at this point I understand the fatigue that people in general feel whenever they talk about how the Nintendo bunch just barged into the fandom. If anything this whole Persona Switch debate has furthered the split and ire between SMT and Persona's fanbases and added even more fuel for the Sony and Nintendo elitists due to how publicized the "portbegging" became. You should never listen to Sony elitists since they're clearly uninformed and just looking to bait, but the same holds true for the Switch people who say dumb crap like "Joker doesn't deserve a spot in Smash" who basically throw ire towards Nintendo and Atlus for not prefacing absolutely every new Smash character with a port of their game on whatever's current at the time. It goes both ways
Also, you severely overestimate how much power a communications manager has. Her job basically amounts to just being the face who relays information between the Japan and West branches and rarely the other way around. Atlus JP are still generally dense and reserved when it comes to actually taking Western feedback seriously to the point where P4G on PC almost didn't even happen until SEGA practically peer pressured them into doing it
@TheFrenchiestFry
I honestly don’t think having both being released this year is going to harm either franchise that much. I’d buy all 4 (SMT5, SMT3,P5S and P5/R) if they announced it. They are getting money either way it’s not like they have to worry about competition cutting in to the bottom line.
@GameOtaku Yeah YOU'D buy both of them, but like that's not really saying the majority will
From what I've heard Catherine Full Body on Switch flew well under the radar for a lot of people and I bet one of the big contributing factors to that is that the Nintendo folk were just bitter through their fixation on it not being Persona, despite coming from largely the same creative team as the Persona games. Catherine was even directed by the same guy who directed all the neo-Persona games (P3-P5)
They obviously drew in some people but clearly not nearly as many as they could've. It may be a smaller title in a different genre of game, but it also did extremely well on PS4 despite not reaching Persona numbers
SMT at this point has basically fallen into Persona's shadow with how much more popular the latter got overnight when P5 originally launched, and I think Atlus themselves are aware of that, especially given they used a Nintendo Direct to announce both the Switch port of Nocturne and the release window of SMT V, which implies they're probably starting to commit to giving SMT the push it needs to succeed in the West. Throwing a Persona port in there anywhere before then will probably be a bigger headline at that point because of how much more vocal the demand was for Persona on the Switch as opposed to something like Nocturne, which is a pretty niche game next to probably most of the Persona titles
It'd be smarter if Atlus just focused on trying to sell SMT to the Nintendo audience the same way they pushed Persona for the PlayStation folk, especially given this is their first game they're ever releasing worldwide at the same time, which probably only happened because of Nintendo themselves considering not even P5R got that treatment, and that's why I think Persona is just not in the conversation for any platform that isn't PC
@TheFrenchiestFry
To be fair Catherine isn’t an RPG it’s a puzzle game. The part that really gets me on that is Catherine was a test to get used to the new engine on PS3 before developing P5 so we know that the vanilla P5 can run well on Switch. Persona is more popular and I don’t think the mainline stands a chance in hell (heh because you know summoning demons and pagan entities) to overshadow it at this point. Thematically speaking Persona is much more lighthearted and fun than the grim dark world of SMT and represents hope while SMT is our world has died and you can only hope to survive by making deals with the devil himself. I personally think both are great but Persona is definitely the one for more fun times to be had. Money being made is money being made. A port of a highly demanded game is going to garner good sales. Again this is really Atlus at fault for splitting up the fandom to two different platforms for so long. But of course we HAVE had SMT exclusive to Sony by SMT3 and I’m a firm believer in turnabout being fair play.
@EmmatheBest So I looked it up because it's something I do when I'm interested in any rpg or warriors game. Anyway, there are a few post-game things to do then a new game +. But definitely do not expect an adventure mode this time sadly.
@GeneralGraveous Oof, sneaky of Nintendolife not to mention anything about that. Definitely lost some interest in this now then, unless it gets released down the line as DLC.
Apparently you need to play the original to understand the plot. but so far i am LOVING this game
@InkIdols update: DEAR GOD. this game is fantastic and more switch owners need to buy this!
@ShadowofTwilight22 No, I don't consider it a sequel because it's a totally different genre of game. And I dislike it because I don't care for musou/warriors games. They never hold my interest for more than a few hours.
