You can change the graphics and music at any time? I couldn't find an option for this in-game...far as I can tell, you have to go back to the main menu.

I don't know if anybody else has encountered this yet, since it's a good few hours into the game, but the game is starting to glitch.

i just got outside of the island, and twice in a row when i tried to go into a different room, the game completely frose up. you now, where the system won't even turn off anymore regularly and you have to hold the power button for like 5 seconds to manually shut it off. anybody else see this yet, or is maybe something wrong with my wii? my wii will freeze like this maybe a few times a year, but i just take that as one-time random occurrences.

@vonboysp: My brother said that happened to him once yesterday. I haven't gotten that far yet, though, so I can't speak from personal experience one way or the other.

The map have some problems in this version in big areas.
Don't open it on Outter Wall, you don't really need it anyway.
I hope that it get's fixed soon.

EDIT:Maybe i wasn't clear enough, but this is what causes the crash in Outter Wall.

Characters already look super-deformed, so I didn't see any issues running it widescreen myself...

i also had it set to wide and thought that it looked right, but if you switch to 4:3 you'll see that it's clearly that resolution. the wiimote safety diagrams at the start will be stretched in widescreen, too. it's a bummer, but i guess a retro game should be in 4:3 anyway.

one thing i've noticed about the new music is that it improves as the game goes on. a lot of the earlier songs which are really energetic and catchy didn't translate well to the higher-fi sound of the wiiware version, but once the more emotional songs come in later they seem to have a lot more impact. i've actually heard a few that i prefer to the originals by now.

Quick question. Does Balrog still say HUZZAH?
I heard he doesn't say it in this version.

He says "Oh yeaaah!" instead.
It was what Nicalis chosed for "Doryaaaa" that doesn't have any meaning in english.

I just realized it but cave story might be in metacritic soon next to SMG and World of Goo as one of Wii's best games. 1up already gave it 100.

So ends a saga older than time itself.
The World's oldest and fiercest army has been led to victory, and a lost generation
is delivered from its fear of extinction. As the sun sets over the
field of conflict the dinosaurs disperse, hoping never to set foot

So my question is, is the game any good on WiiWare?

So my answer is: Cave Story on WiiWare is mind-blowingly, groin-grabbingly awesome.

Yeah, you can change the graphics and music at any time you want...on the main menu
(I wish they had an in-game option, myself)

Why get rid of HAZZAH? That was cool.
I'll still get it though, because I can enjoy a game despite the tiniest setback.

Because he looks like the Kool-Aid Man and busts in. For bonus fun, when he appears read it aloud as Macho Man Randy Savage (for the two people who may not know who he is, Savage was one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and was Bonesaw McGraw in the first Spider-Man movie)

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

I thought he was a Toaster, until I learned he was made from a soap bar.
I wish there was voice acting, or Banjo-Kazooie mumbo jumbo so I could know what Balrog sounds like.

I just beat Curly a few minutes ago and am loving this game! I never played the PC version, but my brother did and he recommend the game as soon as he heard about it coming to the Wii.

I must say, the remixed tunes have really grown on me. Originally I just dismissed them as crap and switched back to the original. But since I'm reviewing the game I figured I had to give it another shot. I'm glad I did--they're not as good as the originals, but they're a nice bonus for fans of the original game. Like a remix album or something.

What's weird for me is that, although they made the graphics a bit more modern, the soundtrack strikes me as distictly more oldschool.

I never played the original game but I switched to the original because I thought it sounded better,

Okay how is the DLC suppose to work? Other games I see a spot to buy DLC this one I didn't see one in this game? unless I missed it,

Just submitted my review. I gave it a 100% but the site is like Gamespot when it comes to that sort of thing--they're sort of in love the fact that they rarely give them out (since the site is so young this might actually be the first). I agree that you have to be selective in what you give perfect scores to--give it to too many and you end up being like Peter Travers from Rolling Stone. But I'd put Cave Story at least in the same arena as Link to the Past and Super Metroid. And those are easily 10/10 games. We'll see how it goes...

i just beat it tonight, and after seeing the new version through i also think it deserves a perfect score. i can't say enough about how great the new visuals are, and in the end the new music winds up being pretty decent. i think the old soundtrack is the definitive one, but a few tunes have been improved by nicalis and it does have a noticeable lack of overall fidelity in comparison. the extra features are well designed and do add some replay value; boss rush has some newly created areas and definitely took a lot of extra programming to create. i can't agree with those who say the game is a cheap port, or isn't worth the money.

now, on to ending number two...

An interesting reading, good news for purists (no insult intended) and for those who aren't liking the quality of the release.

Until correction here an advice regarding the sound.
"As for issues with sound effects, Canabalt creator Adam “Atomic” Saltsman, who spruced up the new background tiles in Cave Story, offered this advice: “set the sound FX to one third volume!”
